Ramblings

Cheers to Friday, friends!! What’s on your holiday weekend agenda? We’ve got all kinds of family get-togethers planned, so I’ll definitely be pulling out my go-to long cardigan from yesterday’s Cute & Cozy style post. Along with whipping up a million calories in the Kitchen! But for now, all I can manage is a brain dump of what’s been rambling through my head lately.

ONE // I always feel so bad when I feature some darling new piece, only for it to sell out quickly. I try to keep an eye out for y’all, and am happy to report some of the more popular pieces of late are now back-in-stock…starting with these darling pajamas, so perfect for Christmas morning. For those of you who prefer to go sans-pants (no judgements here), you may want to know it also comes in a nightshirt.

My favorite relaxed tee (I love it so much I even created a 5 Ways around it!), now comes in a long-sleeved version with 12 color and pattern options! They’re cute worn alone with a scarf, or layered under jackets and cardigans for an extra hit of color or pattern.

You all went cuckoo for the wedge booties, but sadly my beet color sold out quickly. Well, now they’re back in a bunch of new colors, including beet! I’m always game for a little extra height, but the wedge makes these super comfy.

You know my first love is this circle cardigan, but this darling sweater robe comes in a pretty close second! It comes in several fun ‘Wintery’ patterns, but I loved the hearts best…and it’s back to fully-stocked.

This skirt always gets a lot of attention when I wear it, but I’ve had it for years and it’s long been gone. Until now…it’s back! And for a steal. As is the leopard clutch! #rundontwalk

I ‘winterized’ it last weekend with these tights and booties for the Symphony, and stayed warm and chic! These blingy earrings took it up a notch, too.

This cute contrasting cuff sweater is both back in stock (with more colors!), but also on sale! That’s what we call #winning. (Fit Tip: Sweater runs large, both Mama SP and I are wearing XS.)

TWO // I try to do most of my shopping online, especially this time of year, but I’ve found myself at the mall a few times. Which of course led to some Dressing Room Diaries…here are a few recent finds that would make great gifts.

Two darling scarves, both $25! The leopard is a neutral black and white, and the buffalo plaid a darling dark pink.

My favorite fleece cardi-wrap is still on sale, but now has some fun new colors. This one is called ‘red mars’, but it’s really more of a dark pink. I also love the new black and white stripe option. And this black tee is a great layering piece for leggings because it’s long enough to cover your business.

THREE // Without my awareness, or permission for that matter, our son has become a full-blown young man. First, he shot up taller than me over the Summer, and now he’s as tall as Mr. SP. It feels like almost overnight we went from talking about play dates and video games to drivers permits and Homecoming dates!!! My mama heart is still working through this, and I’m struggling to let him go, but I couldn’t be more proud of the person he is, and the choices he’s making! Aren’t these two just the absolute cutest?!?!?

FOUR // If you follow my InstaStories on Instagram (make sure your app is updated, and you can view them by clicking on my profile pic), then you saw I got a little hair makeover recently. Thanks to coloring and curling so frequently over the years, the sides of my hair are broken and wispy…leaving me with a sweet mullet-like hairdo.
You’ve likely never noticed because I usually wear the clip-in pieces from the Redbook cover shoot (read about that here), but I wasn’t very good at putting them in, which resulted in spending too much time on my freaking hair.
I always associated real extensions with celebrities or those who wanted all-over long hair…but turns out they’re also awesome at filling in spots where hair has broken off, or gone a little thin. I found the most amazing girl in Dallas (message me if you want her info!), and in an hour she ‘installed’ a few strands of extensions on either side of my head, just above my ears…and voila, no more mullet!!
They are so light I barely notice them, and I can wash, dry and style my hair as usual. They grow out with my hair, so I’ll see her every eight weeks to have them moved back up to my rootline. She also happens to be a master stylist, as I’ve yet to get my hair to look remotely close to this cool since!

FIVE // Can you believe Christmas is next week?! We actually have our first family get-together tomorrow, so I’ve been scouring Pinterest for new recipe ideas, but I’ll likely default to my Christmas Crack!

Christmas Crack (You’ve been warned!!)
SIX // Our crafty time has been spent in the Kitchen lately, but if you’re looking for some fun and simple ideas, these are favorite projects from past Christmases.

Gift cards are always popular gifts, but I still like to find a way to personalize them, or create fun packaging…like these felt stockings.

I’m using photo tags from Minted for our packages this year, but these felt ornaments were a big hit a few years ago.

SEVEN // Does your family have an Elf on the Shelf? You may be running low on ideas…here’s a few to finish out the season!

EIGHT // I’ve had two fun, and somewhat surprising, features lately! First up, Women’s World magazine included me in their ‘Christmas Shortcuts’ article. And Better Homes & Gardens produced a special ‘I Did It’ issue, featuring tons of great design tips and ideas to implement in your own home. It’s so fun to see our last house featured!

NINE // I’ve been at this blogging thing for almost seven years (7 years!?!?), but I’m continually amazed by the friendships and opportunities that come from it. A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of hosting a Mix & Mingle Event at our brand new J.Crew Mercantile, and I was blown away by the people that came out!! Everyone was so nice and darling, and it was such a joy to meet some of you in person! I wish I’d remembered to take pics with everyone!! #badblogger (Find my fair isle sweater here.)

TEN // As the season progresses, the sales start rolling in. Several of my key pieces are heavily discounted, starting with this great work to weekend blouse.

The leopard infinity scarf was already a steal at $25, and now it’s 33% off. My cut-out booties are even on sale!

This lovely lace dress, with a sassy cut-out back, is on sale for the first time I’ve ever seen! It comes in 11 great colors, and runs true to size.

Lace Dress | Leopard Heels (similar) |  Cuff  | Pearl Bracelet (similar)
Clutch (similar) | Ring
Both these sweaters were recent finds, and now on sale for 50% off!
This southwestern scarf has made several appearances on the blog in the last few months, including my How To Tie a Blanket Scarf post, and you guessed it…it’s on sale, too!

This classy color blocked dress, featured in a recent Work It post, is marked down under $100 now!

And finally, obviously I can’t bring home everything I find in Dressing Room Diaries, and this fair isle was hard to leave behind. But now that it’s on sale for $38, I feel like the universe is telling me it’s meant to be mine?! (Fit tip: size down…we’re both wearing XXS)

What’s rambling through your head this busy holiday season? I’d love to hear what’s going on in your world! Happy weekend, lovebugs!

  1. Lots of cute ideas here! I think that long t-shirt needs to be in my rotation to go with leggings. Hoping the big snowstorm headed our way doesn't de-rail our Christmas party plans this weekend! Thanks for all of the style inspiration!

  3. Cassie – I'm always amazed by how great clothes look on a REAL PERSON vs. the models that retailers use for their product images. I wouldn't have looked twice at that contrast cuff sweater on the site but on YOU it's so cute!! I think you need to give Nordstrom some pointers on how to style their images. #justsayin 🙂

Is there a way to create a link from the picture of your favorite item in Sugar Plum Picks back to one of the entries or pictures you used it in. I bought a plaid scarf that I love and am wearing a lot but wanted to get some ideas on color combinations you used it with. I was able to search "scarf" and was able to find some of what I was looking for. But it would be really helpful if it was possible to create that link back to your post.
I do most of my shopping and fashion finds through your blog and also "a thoughtful place." I just don't have time to shop and put together outfits anymore working full time and with 2 busy kids. You have been a life saver and reading your blog actually makes me look like I am at least keeping up with some current trends and often even ahead of trends ;).
    Thanks again for your posts!

    • That would be the coolest invention ever!!! I'm working on re-organizing the blog, so hopefully it gets easier soon. As for now, I'd click the 'Fall Style' category for most of the scarf options. xo

Ramblings

Good morning from northern California! And I do mean northern! We spent the weekend about four hours up the coast from San Francisco, and it’s absolutely stunning. I can’t wait to share this area, teaming with great food, jaw-dropping views, and an abundance of peace-and-quiet, with you! But for now, all I can manage is a brain dump of what’s been rambling through my head lately.

ONE // I always feel so bad when I feature some darling new piece, only for it to sell out quickly. I try to keep an eye out for y’all, and am happy to report some of the more popular pieces of late are now back-in-stock…starting with this oversized sweater, that’s under $40!

They’ve even added new colors…which pretty much all look great with the soft southwestern scarf. These are also my fave black jeans, which are on sale for $35!!

Mama Sugarplum is a fan of the sweater, too!

On Mama SP: Sweater | Scarf | Dark Jeans | Booties

The floral print in this swing dress is restocked, as is, my overworked utility jacket. I don’t know what it is about this dress, but it’s Mr. SP’s favorite on me these days.

Fit Tip: Size up in the dress (I’m wearing a small), and down in the jacket (I’m wearing an XXS).

I loved this classic combo of black and white, but the v-neck of the sweater was a bit low for my liking. This new one is a much better option, but still has the great relaxed fit.

This is hands-down one of my favorite outfits from the past few months, and the cardigan is always in heavy rotation. The gray is still sold-out, but this fun marled pink one just popped up!

TWO // I absolutely love hearing from y’all, and your emails and comments are always the highlight of my day. I’m thrilled when you find inspiration here, and love it even more when you send me pics of your interpretation. This one from a darling reader (hi, Ashley!), who was inspired by our Back-to-School Style post, is probably my favorite ever! How cute is her daughter?!

The outtakes from this shoot make me laugh every time, too. My family is so supportive, and such good sports!!

THREE // Not only do the OG home bloggers, John & Sherry of Young House Love, have two home decor books, but they’ve added a really fun coloring book to their impressive list of accomplishments! Wouldn’t it be a great gift for your decor-loving friends?!

FOUR // I’ve had Crane & Canopy duvets and shams on our bed for the last several years (see them here & here), and absolutely adore them. I was thrilled to see they added a Bath category to their collection…and wowza are they luxurious!! The towels are so plush and large, but somehow still dry quickly! I hate when towels don’t fully dry between baths!

FIVE // You guys were so kind about our One Room Challenge reveal last week, and I so appreciate all the comments and shares around the internet! House Beautiful wrote a lovely article about each of the 20 rooms, and I’m just so flattered to be part of it! They even posted my room on Instagram and called it their home dreams come true.’

Have you checked out all the rooms yet?! I couldn’t even begin to choose a favorite…they are all simply amazing. I’ll have a full Source List and Breakdown of our room later this week.

SIX // Last month was our family’s 11th annual trip to the State Fair of Texas, and it was just as fun as the first time! I sneak the kids out of school a little early on a Friday, and we spend the afternoon watching pig races, feeding the farm animals, sitting in all the new cars, and hanging with Big Tex.

But once nighttime hits, it’s all about the food and rides. Growing up, I always went to the Fair with my grandfather, and I can’t help but think of him the whole time we’re there. I know he’d love that I’m carrying on the tradition with my own kids.

SEVEN // I love these (not so) little people!!! #halloween2016

EIGHT // A little while ago, I told you about stumbling across the Instagram account of these darling newlyweds, which led me to their blog, The Lavender’s Longshot, and now I’m glued to their every post. One day LeAnn was blogging about renovating their home, and the next, she’s telling the story of her husband’s motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed from the armpits down. (Read their story from the beginning here.)

Her honest accounts of what they are going through (five months in the hospital, selling their home, moving near a rehab facility, putting their family-planning on indefinite hold), along with her unwavering faith and positive attitude, humble me beyond words, and even though we’ve never met, I find myself thinking about them and praying for them regularly. They adopted the word ‘Moxie’ while in the hospital because day-after-day, Derek faces each difficult hurdle with strength and courage.

Their friends at MudLove created these beautiful handmade mugs (bracelets, too!) in their honor, and the sales of them go towards helping the Lavenders with their astounding medical bills, and overwhelming monthly costs (for things no young man should have to endure). Which means everyone I know is getting one for Christmas. 😉 The mug not only reminds me to pray for them, but what true moxie looks like. You can get your own mugs and bracelets here, or give directly here.

NINE // Can you believe Thanksgiving is next week?! We actually have our first feast this Saturday, so I’ve started scouring Pinterest for new recipe twists on the stand-bys. Here are a few of my favorite Thanksgiving-themed posts from year’s past.

Project: DIY Scented Pinecone Wreath

Tablescape: Natural & Glam Fall Table

Kid Craft: Paper Pumpkin Placecards

Food: 2-Ingredient Pumpkin Cake

TEN // As the season starts to move on, the sales have been rolling in. These are a few of my key pieces, now heavily discounted.

This high-neck swing dress, which has been my go-to for many nights out, is not only back-in-stock in all sizes, but marked down under $50! Add some statement earrings, and you’ve got a great holiday party outfit with this one!

I featured this pencil skirt in a Day to Night post earlier this week, and while the sweet bird print is still sold-out, they did restock a fun jungle print. The skirt, blouse and pumps (my go-tos for work!), are all on sale!

This blouse is still available in several colors, and on super-sale. It’s great tucked in, or worn long with leggings. And you know I adore the bootcut jeans.

You may recall this look from my 30 Days of Fall Outfit Ideas post, but I can’t talk about sales without mentioning this fabulous peacoat…on sale for only $38. Just be sure to size up one. Oh, and the leopard scarf is back-in-stock, too.

I’ve yet to wear these booties when someone doesn’t stop me to comment…and those of you that have them agree, they are as comfy as they are darling. And also on sale. (Size down half-size!)

This fleece-cardi isn’t new, and I’m pretty convinced most of us have it by now! I’d feel embarrassed about how many I own, except every time I post it, y’all chime in with just how big your own collection is! It’s definitely one of my favorite things to wear, and with so many colors now on sale, it’s hard not to grab more!

What’s rambling through your head this Monday? I’d love to hear what’s going on in your world!

The story of this young couple is so touching. Doesn`t that give you perspective… Funny enough, I thought of you a few times over the weekend, wondering if you were bothered by the (few) negative nellies that commented on your dining room. I hope you were able to let those comments bounce off of you, and focus on the positive. It`s funny how I feel defensive for you, although we have never met! Ramblings

Happy new week, friends, I hope your weekend was grand! Ours was a good mix of lazy and busy, which was exactly what I needed after camping with a gaggle of fifth graders last week! I had big plans for a post today, but just couldn’t get my act together, so it will have to wait for another day…and instead, you get a brain dump of the ramblings currently going through my head, and latest happenings around here.

ONE // I always feel so bad when I feature some darling new piece, only for it to sell out quickly. I try to keep an eye out for y’all, and am happy to report some of the more popular pieces of late are now back-in-stock…starting with this circle cardigan. It’s hands-down the softest thing in my closet, I even snuggle-up in it every night with my pajamas! I can hardly wait for cooler weather so I can wear it all day, too.

These cut-out booties are back, as well, in all colors and sizes. I’ll be wearing them with both jeans and dresses all Fall.

Fit Tip: I sized down half-size, and wear them sans socks so the cutouts show. If you prefer to wear socks, these booties are a cute and comfy similar option.

Another great bootie, that’s perfect for most seasons, and easily dressed up or down, are these peep-toes. They sell out quickly every time, so if you’ve had your eye on them, I wouldn’t wait. See them styled for Now & Later here.
You likely recognize this leopard clutch since I carry it more often than not (see it here, here and here for starters)…it was in stock when I hit publish on this post, so fingers crossed it stays that way!
This military jacket was a favorite when I shared it on my darling mom, but it sold out in a hot-second. It’s back in two great neutral greens, and the gray pops in and out, too.
Fit Tip: It runs true-to-size…my mom is wearing a medium.

TWO // I almost fell out of my chair when Traditional Home contacted me about being featured in their new digital magazine, Simply Perfect Kitchens & Baths. And to see my face in it is almost too much! It’s a gorgeous read, with tons of great inspiration…check out the full issue here.

THREE // I’m so excited to be headed back to New York City later this month to attend the Better Homes & Gardens Stylemaker’s Event. It’s incredibly flattering to be included among such a stellar line-up of talented bloggers, and I can’t wait to soak up all that creative inspiration again. See my recap of last year’s event here.

FOUR // If you followed my InstaStory last week, then you saw some of the fun we had at Little Miss’s Outdoor Education Camp. It’s actually part of the school curriculum for fifth graders in our district, and something the kids look forward to since the first day of Kindergarten.

I didn’t initially sign up to chaperone…in fact, I ducked my head big-time when the call for volunteers for the 3-day camp went out! (Read more about my shortcomings here.) But someone dropped out at the last minute, and I somehow found myself as the new counselor of these darling girls. And as miraculous as it seems…I didn’t misplace a single girl, nor was a single tear shed! #bythemorme

Custom monogram hats and sunglasses from Blush & Bashful

It was a steamy three days, and we logged almost 10-miles of walking each day, so I lived in my favorite athletic wear and caps! #camphairdontcare

If I’m being totally honest, I was actually dreading the whole thing a little. I mean, I’m not ‘that mom’ who loves all things kid, nor am I the ‘fun parent’ of our family. But I let go of any expectations, along with my guard, and ended up having such an amazing time with all the girls, moms and teachers…and especially this precious girl.

I loved watching her with her peers, and work through obstacles in a way I don’t see at home. She surprises me everyday with her spirit and kindness, and I’m humbled to be her mama. The whole camp experience taught me I can be the fun parent, too! Sometimes. 😉

FIVE // While we were at camp, my other baby girl was bitten by a copperhead snake! I spent the evening sneaking outside the cabin to get updates from Mr. SP, and crying in my sleeping bag with worry.

She spent the night in the emergency animal hospital and received the insanely-priced anti-venom, but the good news is she’s going to be just fine! Reading all the encouraging messages on my social media definitely lifted me up, and I was reminded of how much I love this online community of ours!

SIX // I shared some fun back-to-school style with you guys last month, but I can’t let a year go by without the official first day of school pic! #lovethesetwo

SEVEN // Okay, on a recent Ramblings post, I professed my love and horror over a newfound product, Baby Feet. (Read the review and my cringe-worthy experience here.) And from the response I received, many of you are just as in love, and completely mesmerized, by your experience with it, too.

But what I find really funny, and completely horrifying, is how many of you shared pics of your peeling shedding feet with me!! Even posting them on social media!! For the sake of my gag reflex, I’m going to have to ask for no more! Or at least give me a warning in the subject line. 😉 That said, I think I’m ready for Round 2! #obsessed #cantstopwontstop

EIGHT // I somehow stumbled across the Instagram account of these darling newlyweds, which led me to their blog, The Lavender’s Longshot, and I’m glued to their every post. One day she’s blogging about renovating their home, and the next, she’s telling the story of her husband’s motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed from the armpits down.

Her honest accounts of what they are going through, along with her unwavering faith and positive attitude, humbles me beyond words. (Check here for how you can help.)

NINE // Stefanie’s safari-inspired boy nursery is nothing short of perfection. But of course we’ve come to expect nothing less from her!

TEN // As the season comes to an end, the sales have been rolling in. These are a few of my key pieces, now heavily discounted. My go-to tee is on sale in several colors…find the sale one here, and more colors (only $25) here.

The the blazer from this Blazers & Bootcuts post has the cutest pleated back, and awesome sale price. Those jeans are pretty much perfection, too…you’ll be seeing more of those later this week.

Both Mama Sugarplum and I fell for this cashmere hoodie pullover thingie…but one of us might actually spring for it now that it’s on sale!

As is this entire classic workwear outfit. The pants were a little long on me, but fit like a dream. And the sweater would add a touch of class to everything from skirts to jeans.

I love all the emails from those of you with upcoming cruises…do yourself a favor, and just grab this dress now that it’s on sale. You’ll thank me when you feel like the belle of the ball on formal nights.

A girl can never have too much plaid…I particularly like the smaller scale of this one. And it’s 40% off, so there’s that.

What’s rambling through your head this Monday? I’d love to hear what’s going on in your world! SaveSaveSaveSave

  1. Congrats on the feature! Loved following along with your camp outing and so glad sweet Maggie is okay! Seems like your two are just about the same as mine and the difference between height really grew this year.

  2. I love these kinds of posts. My 5th grade daughter is going on the same trip next month, and like you, I'm ducking the call for chaperones. I'm so thankful for the mamas (and dads) who step up for these things. How wonderful that you ended up enjoying it, while getting to spend time with your girl!

I was wondering if you've finished your kitchen dining area?

    • Hi Kate!!! We've done a few things in the Breakfast Room (see a peek of the palm drapes in last week's Fall Home Tour), but not a lot!! Hopefully that will pick back up soon and I'll share updates here!! xo

  4. So happy to hear Maggie is on the mend! After we had a similar scare with our newly adopted pup a few years ago, I vowed to get pet insurance. It's not cheap, but covers a lot of the basics (wellness, vaccines, etc) as well as those emergencies you never hope happen.

So jealous of your trip to NYC! We're heading to Chicago mid-December for our annual cold weather holiday shopping trip. Hope to get to NYC for Valentines Day, though! Have fun!!

Ramblings

Cheers to Friday!! I hope you have a fun, relaxing weekend ahead. We’ve spent the week lazing around the beach, eating too many fried grouper sandwiches, and dolphin-spotting. Have you updated your Instagram app? If so, you can follow along on my Instagram Story. I’d only recently joined Snap Chat, so I’ve pretty much abandoned that in favor of Instagram’s version. What about you? Do you have a preference between the two?

But as for today’s post, you get my monthly brain dump of the ramblings currently going through my head, and latest happenings around here.

ONE // I always feel so bad when I feature some darling new piece, only for it to sell out quickly. I try to keep an eye out for y’all, and am happy to report some of the more popular pieces of late are now restocked! Starting with the off-the-shoulder top and cute scalloped shorts from a recent Date Night Style post.

Fit Tip: The top is true-to-size, but I did size up one in the shorts for more drape. I’m wearing an XS and small, respectively.

As is this cowlneck dress…it’s no longer on sale, but still a good deal at $38.

Fit Tip: It runs true-to-size for me, and I’m wearing an XS.

Same goes for these booties featured in last week’s Now & Later post.

When I shared 3 Ways Black & White Work Wear, the patterned version of this skirt was already sold out, but it looks to be back, and fully stocked. It’s such a flattering fit, and sturdy enough to pair with tights in Winter months, too.

I don’t wear a lot of maxi dresses, mostly because I don’t want the hassle of having them hemmed for my vertically-challenged frame, and the few that come in petite sizing always seem to sell out immediately. This gorgeous floral number fit me like a glove, and is now fully restocked in petite sizes! (And this geo-print version is 40% off!)

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 2P.

And finally, I’ve had these strappy wedge sandals for several years, and they look good with just about everything…and now back-in-stock in the flattering nude shade. (And you already know this is my go-to dress…especially considering I have it in three colors.)

TWO // My jaw is still on the ground that Real Simple featured me as their spotlight blogger in last month’s issue, and called me ‘the best friend you always wanted.’ I’m pretty sure that’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said about me.

THREE // As if it weren’t cool enough to work with Target to create a study space for Little Miss, they featured it on their
