Ramblings

Cheers to Friday, friends!! What’s on your holiday weekend agenda? We’ve got all kinds of family get-togethers planned, so I’ll definitely be pulling out my go-to long cardigan from yesterday’s Cute & Cozy style post. Along with whipping up a million calories in the Kitchen! But for now, all I can manage is a brain dump of what’s been rambling through my head lately.

ONE // I always feel so bad when I feature some darling new piece, only for it to sell out quickly. I try to keep an eye out for y’all, and am happy to report some of the more popular pieces of late are now back-in-stock…starting with these darling pajamas, so perfect for Christmas morning. For those of you who prefer to go sans-pants (no judgements here), you may want to know it also comes in a nightshirt.

My favorite relaxed tee (I love it so much I even created a 5 Ways around it!), now comes in a long-sleeved version with 12 color and pattern options! They’re cute worn alone with a scarf, or layered under jackets and cardigans for an extra hit of color or pattern.

You all went cuckoo for the wedge booties, but sadly my beet color sold out quickly. Well, now they’re back in a bunch of new colors, including beet! I’m always game for a little extra height, but the wedge makes these super comfy.

You know my first love is this circle cardigan, but this darling sweater robe comes in a pretty close second! It comes in several fun ‘Wintery’ patterns, but I loved the hearts best…and it’s back to fully-stocked.

This skirt always gets a lot of attention when I wear it, but I’ve had it for years and it’s long been gone. Until now…it’s back! And for a steal. As is the leopard clutch! #rundontwalk

I ‘winterized’ it last weekend with these tights and booties for the Symphony, and stayed warm and chic! These blingy earrings took it up a notch, too.

This cute contrasting cuff sweater is both back in stock (with more colors!), but also on sale! That’s what we call #winning. (Fit Tip: Sweater runs large, both Mama SP and I are wearing XS.)

TWO // I try to do most of my shopping online, especially this time of year, but I’ve found myself at the mall a few times. Which of course led to some Dressing Room Diaries…here are a few recent finds that would make great gifts.

Two darling scarves, both $25! The leopard is a neutral black and white, and the buffalo plaid a darling dark pink.

My favorite fleece cardi-wrap is still on sale, but now has some fun new colors. This one is called ‘red mars’, but it’s really more of a dark pink. I also love the new black and white stripe option. And this black tee is a great layering piece for leggings because it’s long enough to cover your business.

THREE // Without my awareness, or permission for that matter, our son has become a full-blown young man. First, he shot up taller than me over the Summer, and now he’s as tall as Mr. SP. It feels like almost overnight we went from talking about play dates and video games to drivers permits and Homecoming dates!!! My mama heart is still working through this, and I’m struggling to let him go, but I couldn’t be more proud of the person he is, and the choices he’s making! Aren’t these two just the absolute cutest?!?!?

FOUR // If you follow my InstaStories on Instagram (make sure your app is updated, and you can view them by clicking on my profile pic), then you saw I got a little hair makeover recently. Thanks to coloring and curling so frequently over the years, the sides of my hair are broken and wispy…leaving me with a sweet mullet-like hairdo.
You’ve likely never noticed because I usually wear the clip-in pieces from the Redbook cover shoot (read about that here), but I wasn’t very good at putting them in, which resulted in spending too much time on my freaking hair.
I always associated real extensions with celebrities or those who wanted all-over long hair…but turns out they’re also awesome at filling in spots where hair has broken off, or gone a little thin. I found the most amazing girl in Dallas (message me if you want her info!), and in an hour she ‘installed’ a few strands of extensions on either side of my head, just above my ears…and voila, no more mullet!!
They are so light I barely notice them, and I can wash, dry and style my hair as usual. They grow out with my hair, so I’ll see her every eight weeks to have them moved back up to my rootline. She also happens to be a master stylist, as I’ve yet to get my hair to look remotely close to this cool since!

FIVE // Can you believe Christmas is next week?! We actually have our first family get-together tomorrow, so I’ve been scouring Pinterest for new recipe ideas, but I’ll likely default to my Christmas Crack!

Christmas Crack (You’ve been warned!!)
SIX // Our crafty time has been spent in the Kitchen lately, but if you’re looking for some fun and simple ideas, these are favorite projects from past Christmases.

Gift cards are always popular gifts, but I still like to find a way to personalize them, or create fun packaging…like these felt stockings.

I’m using photo tags from Minted for our packages this year, but these felt ornaments were a big hit a few years ago.

SEVEN // Does your family have an Elf on the Shelf? You may be running low on ideas…here’s a few to finish out the season!

EIGHT // I’ve had two fun, and somewhat surprising, features lately! First up, Women’s World magazine included me in their ‘Christmas Shortcuts’ article. And Better Homes & Gardens produced a special ‘I Did It’ issue, featuring tons of great design tips and ideas to implement in your own home. It’s so fun to see our last house featured!

NINE // I’ve been at this blogging thing for almost seven years (7 years!?!?), but I’m continually amazed by the friendships and opportunities that come from it. A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of hosting a Mix & Mingle Event at our brand new J.Crew Mercantile, and I was blown away by the people that came out!! Everyone was so nice and darling, and it was such a joy to meet some of you in person! I wish I’d remembered to take pics with everyone!! #badblogger (Find my fair isle sweater here.)

TEN // As the season progresses, the sales start rolling in. Several of my key pieces are heavily discounted, starting with this great work to weekend blouse.

The leopard infinity scarf was already a steal at $25, and now it’s 33% off. My cut-out booties are even on sale!

This lovely lace dress, with a sassy cut-out back, is on sale for the first time I’ve ever seen! It comes in 11 great colors, and runs true to size.

Lace Dress | Leopard Heels (similar) |  Cuff  | Pearl Bracelet (similar)
Clutch (similar) | Ring
Both these sweaters were recent finds, and now on sale for 50% off!
This southwestern scarf has made several appearances on the blog in the last few months, including my How To Tie a Blanket Scarf post, and you guessed it…it’s on sale, too!

This classy color blocked dress, featured in a recent Work It post, is marked down under $100 now!

And finally, obviously I can’t bring home everything I find in Dressing Room Diaries, and this fair isle was hard to leave behind. But now that it’s on sale for $38, I feel like the universe is telling me it’s meant to be mine?! (Fit tip: size down…we’re both wearing XXS)

What’s rambling through your head this busy holiday season? I’d love to hear what’s going on in your world! Happy weekend, lovebugs!

Cassie – I'm always amazed by how great clothes look on a REAL PERSON vs. the models that retailers use for their product images. I wouldn't have looked twice at that contrast cuff sweater on the site but on YOU it's so cute!! I think you need to give Nordstrom some pointers on how to style their images. #justsayin 🙂

Is there a way to create a link from the picture of your favorite item in Sugar Plum Picks back to one of the entries or pictures you used it in. I bought a plaid scarf that I love and am wearing a lot but wanted to get some ideas on color combinations you used it with. I was able to search "scarf" and was able to find some of what I was looking for. But it would be really helpful if it was possible to create that link back to your post.
I do most of my shopping and fashion finds through your blog and also "a thoughtful place." I just don't have time to shop and put together outfits anymore working full time and with 2 busy kids. You have been a life saver and reading your blog actually makes me look like I am at least keeping up with some current trends and often even ahead of trends ;).
    Thanks again for your posts!

Ramblings

Good morning from northern California! And I do mean northern! We spent the weekend about four hours up the coast from San Francisco, and it’s absolutely stunning. I can’t wait to share this area, teaming with great food, jaw-dropping views, and an abundance of peace-and-quiet, with you! But for now, all I can manage is a brain dump of what’s been rambling through my head lately.

ONE // I always feel so bad when I feature some darling new piece, only for it to sell out quickly. I try to keep an eye out for y’all, and am happy to report some of the more popular pieces of late are now back-in-stock…starting with this oversized sweater, that’s under $40!

They’ve even added new colors…which pretty much all look great with the soft southwestern scarf. These are also my fave black jeans, which are on sale for $35!!

Mama Sugarplum is a fan of the sweater, too!

On Mama SP: Sweater | Scarf | Dark Jeans | Booties

The floral print in this swing dress is restocked, as is, my overworked utility jacket. I don’t know what it is about this dress, but it’s Mr. SP’s favorite on me these days.

Fit Tip: Size up in the dress (I’m wearing a small), and down in the jacket (I’m wearing an XXS).

I loved this classic combo of black and white, but the v-neck of the sweater was a bit low for my liking. This new one is a much better option, but still has the great relaxed fit.

This is hands-down one of my favorite outfits from the past few months, and the cardigan is always in heavy rotation. The gray is still sold-out, but this fun marled pink one just popped up!

TWO // I absolutely love hearing from y’all, and your emails and comments are always the highlight of my day. I’m thrilled when you find inspiration here, and love it even more when you send me pics of your interpretation. This one from a darling reader (hi, Ashley!), who was inspired by our Back-to-School Style post, is probably my favorite ever! How cute is her daughter?!

The outtakes from this shoot make me laugh every time, too. My family is so supportive, and such good sports!!

THREE // Not only do the OG home bloggers, John & Sherry of Young House Love, have two home decor books, but they’ve added a really fun coloring book to their impressive list of accomplishments! Wouldn’t it be a great gift for your decor-loving friends?!

FOUR // I’ve had Crane & Canopy duvets and shams on our bed for the last several years (see them here & here), and absolutely adore them. I was thrilled to see they added a Bath category to their collection…and wowza are they luxurious!! The towels are so plush and large, but somehow still dry quickly! I hate when towels don’t fully dry between baths!

FIVE // You guys were so kind about our One Room Challenge reveal last week, and I so appreciate all the comments and shares around the internet! House Beautiful wrote a lovely article about each of the 20 rooms, and I’m just so flattered to be part of it! They even posted my room on Instagram and called it their home dreams come true.’

Have you checked out all the rooms yet?! I couldn’t even begin to choose a favorite…they are all simply amazing. I’ll have a full Source List and Breakdown of our room later this week.

SIX // Last month was our family’s 11th annual trip to the State Fair of Texas, and it was just as fun as the first time! I sneak the kids out of school a little early on a Friday, and we spend the afternoon watching pig races, feeding the farm animals, sitting in all the new cars, and hanging with Big Tex.

But once nighttime hits, it’s all about the food and rides. Growing up, I always went to the Fair with my grandfather, and I can’t help but think of him the whole time we’re there. I know he’d love that I’m carrying on the tradition with my own kids.

SEVEN // I love these (not so) little people!!! #halloween2016

EIGHT // A little while ago, I told you about stumbling across the Instagram account of these darling newlyweds, which led me to their blog, The Lavender’s Longshot, and now I’m glued to their every post. One day LeAnn was blogging about renovating their home, and the next, she’s telling the story of her husband’s motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed from the armpits down. (Read their story from the beginning here.)

Her honest accounts of what they are going through (five months in the hospital, selling their home, moving near a rehab facility, putting their family-planning on indefinite hold), along with her unwavering faith and positive attitude, humble me beyond words, and even though we’ve never met, I find myself thinking about them and praying for them regularly. They adopted the word ‘Moxie’ while in the hospital because day-after-day, Derek faces each difficult hurdle with strength and courage.

Their friends at MudLove created these beautiful handmade mugs (bracelets, too!) in their honor, and the sales of them go towards helping the Lavenders with their astounding medical bills, and overwhelming monthly costs (for things no young man should have to endure). Which means everyone I know is getting one for Christmas. 😉 The mug not only reminds me to pray for them, but what true moxie looks like. You can get your own mugs and bracelets here, or give directly here.

NINE // Can you believe Thanksgiving is next week?! We actually have our first feast this Saturday, so I’ve started scouring Pinterest for new recipe twists on the stand-bys. Here are a few of my favorite Thanksgiving-themed posts from year’s past.

Project: DIY Scented Pinecone Wreath

Tablescape: Natural & Glam Fall Table

Kid Craft: Paper Pumpkin Placecards

Food: 2-Ingredient Pumpkin Cake

TEN // As the season starts to move on, the sales have been rolling in. These are a few of my key pieces, now heavily discounted.

This high-neck swing dress, which has been my go-to for many nights out, is not only back-in-stock in all sizes, but marked down under $50! Add some statement earrings, and you’ve got a great holiday party outfit with this one!

I featured this pencil skirt in a Day to Night post earlier this week, and while the sweet bird print is still sold-out, they did restock a fun jungle print. The skirt, blouse and pumps (my go-tos for work!), are all on sale!

This blouse is still available in several colors, and on super-sale. It’s great tucked in, or worn long with leggings. And you know I adore the bootcut jeans.

You may recall this look from my 30 Days of Fall Outfit Ideas post, but I can’t talk about sales without mentioning this fabulous peacoat…on sale for only $38. Just be sure to size up one. Oh, and the leopard scarf is back-in-stock, too.

I’ve yet to wear these booties when someone doesn’t stop me to comment…and those of you that have them agree, they are as comfy as they are darling. And also on sale. (Size down half-size!)

This fleece-cardi isn’t new, and I’m pretty convinced most of us have it by now! I’d feel embarrassed about how many I own, except every time I post it, y’all chime in with just how big your own collection is! It’s definitely one of my favorite things to wear, and with so many colors now on sale, it’s hard not to grab more!

What’s rambling through your head this Monday? I’d love to hear what’s going on in your world!

The story of this young couple is so touching. Doesn`t that give you perspective… Funny enough, I thought of you a few times over the weekend, wondering if you were bothered by the (few) negative nellies that commented on your dining room. I hope you were able to let those comments bounce off of you, and focus on the positive. It`s funny how I feel defensive for you, although we have never met! Ramblings

Happy new week, friends, I hope your weekend was grand! Ours was a good mix of lazy and busy, which was exactly what I needed after camping with a gaggle of fifth graders last week! I had big plans for a post today, but just couldn’t get my act together, so it will have to wait for another day…and instead, you get a brain dump of the ramblings currently going through my head, and latest happenings around here.

ONE // I always feel so bad when I feature some darling new piece, only for it to sell out quickly. I try to keep an eye out for y’all, and am happy to report some of the more popular pieces of late are now back-in-stock…starting with this circle cardigan. It’s hands-down the softest thing in my closet, I even snuggle-up in it every night with my pajamas! I can hardly wait for cooler weather so I can wear it all day, too.

These cut-out booties are back, as well, in all colors and sizes. I’ll be wearing them with both jeans and dresses all Fall.

Fit Tip: I sized down half-size, and wear them sans socks so the cutouts show. If you prefer to wear socks, these booties are a cute and comfy similar option.

Another great bootie, that’s perfect for most seasons, and easily dressed up or down, are these peep-toes. They sell out quickly every time, so if you’ve had your eye on them, I wouldn’t wait. See them styled for Now & Later here.
You likely recognize this leopard clutch since I carry it more often than not (see it here, here and here for starters)…it was in stock when I hit publish on this post, so fingers crossed it stays that way!
This military jacket was a favorite when I shared it on my darling mom, but it sold out in a hot-second. It’s back in two great neutral greens, and the gray pops in and out, too.
Fit Tip: It runs true-to-size…my mom is wearing a medium.

TWO // I almost fell out of my chair when Traditional Home contacted me about being featured in their new digital magazine, Simply Perfect Kitchens & Baths. And to see my face in it is almost too much! It’s a gorgeous read, with tons of great inspiration…check out the full issue here.

THREE // I’m so excited to be headed back to New York City later this month to attend the Better Homes & Gardens Stylemaker’s Event. It’s incredibly flattering to be included among such a stellar line-up of talented bloggers, and I can’t wait to soak up all that creative inspiration again. See my recap of last year’s event here.

FOUR // If you followed my InstaStory last week, then you saw some of the fun we had at Little Miss’s Outdoor Education Camp. It’s actually part of the school curriculum for fifth graders in our district, and something the kids look forward to since the first day of Kindergarten.

I didn’t initially sign up to chaperone…in fact, I ducked my head big-time when the call for volunteers for the 3-day camp went out! (Read more about my shortcomings here.) But someone dropped out at the last minute, and I somehow found myself as the new counselor of these darling girls. And as miraculous as it seems…I didn’t misplace a single girl, nor was a single tear shed! #bythemorme

Custom monogram hats and sunglasses from Blush & Bashful

It was a steamy three days, and we logged almost 10-miles of walking each day, so I lived in my favorite athletic wear and caps! #camphairdontcare

If I’m being totally honest, I was actually dreading the whole thing a little. I mean, I’m not ‘that mom’ who loves all things kid, nor am I the ‘fun parent’ of our family. But I let go of any expectations, along with my guard, and ended up having such an amazing time with all the girls, moms and teachers…and especially this precious girl.

I loved watching her with her peers, and work through obstacles in a way I don’t see at home. She surprises me everyday with her spirit and kindness, and I’m humbled to be her mama. The whole camp experience taught me I can be the fun parent, too! Sometimes. 😉

FIVE // While we were at camp, my other baby girl was bitten by a copperhead snake! I spent the evening sneaking outside the cabin to get updates from Mr. SP, and crying in my sleeping bag with worry.

She spent the night in the emergency animal hospital and received the insanely-priced anti-venom, but the good news is she’s going to be just fine! Reading all the encouraging messages on my social media definitely lifted me up, and I was reminded of how much I love this online community of ours!

SIX // I shared some fun back-to-school style with you guys last month, but I can’t let a year go by without the official first day of school pic! #lovethesetwo

SEVEN // Okay, on a recent Ramblings post, I professed my love and horror over a newfound product, Baby Feet. (Read the review and my cringe-worthy experience here.) And from the response I received, many of you are just as in love, and completely mesmerized, by your experience with it, too.

But what I find really funny, and completely horrifying, is how many of you shared pics of your peeling shedding feet with me!! Even posting them on social media!! For the sake of my gag reflex, I’m going to have to ask for no more! Or at least give me a warning in the subject line. 😉 That said, I think I’m ready for Round 2! #obsessed #cantstopwontstop

EIGHT // I somehow stumbled across the Instagram account of these darling newlyweds, which led me to their blog, The Lavender’s Longshot, and I’m glued to their every post. One day she’s blogging about renovating their home, and the next, she’s telling the story of her husband’s motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed from the armpits down.

Her honest accounts of what they are going through, along with her unwavering faith and positive attitude, humbles me beyond words. (Check here for how you can help.)

NINE // Stefanie’s safari-inspired boy nursery is nothing short of perfection. But of course we’ve come to expect nothing less from her!

TEN // As the season comes to an end, the sales have been rolling in. These are a few of my key pieces, now heavily discounted. My go-to tee is on sale in several colors…find the sale one here, and more colors (only $25) here.

The the blazer from this Blazers & Bootcuts post has the cutest pleated back, and awesome sale price. Those jeans are pretty much perfection, too…you’ll be seeing more of those later this week.

Both Mama Sugarplum and I fell for this cashmere hoodie pullover thingie…but one of us might actually spring for it now that it’s on sale!

As is this entire classic workwear outfit. The pants were a little long on me, but fit like a dream. And the sweater would add a touch of class to everything from skirts to jeans.

I love all the emails from those of you with upcoming cruises…do yourself a favor, and just grab this dress now that it’s on sale. You’ll thank me when you feel like the belle of the ball on formal nights.

A girl can never have too much plaid…I particularly like the smaller scale of this one. And it’s 40% off, so there’s that.

What’s rambling through your head this Monday? I’d love to hear what’s going on in your world! SaveSaveSaveSave

Ramblings

Cheers to Friday!! I hope you have a fun, relaxing weekend ahead. We’ve spent the week lazing around the beach, eating too many fried grouper sandwiches, and dolphin-spotting. Have you updated your Instagram app? If so, you can follow along on my Instagram Story. I’d only recently joined Snap Chat, so I’ve pretty much abandoned that in favor of Instagram’s version. What about you? Do you have a preference between the two?

But as for today’s post, you get my monthly brain dump of the ramblings currently going through my head, and latest happenings around here.

ONE // I always feel so bad when I feature some darling new piece, only for it to sell out quickly. I try to keep an eye out for y’all, and am happy to report some of the more popular pieces of late are now restocked! Starting with the off-the-shoulder top and cute scalloped shorts from a recent Date Night Style post.

Fit Tip: The top is true-to-size, but I did size up one in the shorts for more drape. I’m wearing an XS and small, respectively.

As is this cowlneck dress…it’s no longer on sale, but still a good deal at $38.

Fit Tip: It runs true-to-size for me, and I’m wearing an XS.

Same goes for these booties featured in last week’s Now & Later post.

When I shared 3 Ways Black & White Work Wear, the patterned version of this skirt was already sold out, but it looks to be back, and fully stocked. It’s such a flattering fit, and sturdy enough to pair with tights in Winter months, too.

I don’t wear a lot of maxi dresses, mostly because I don’t want the hassle of having them hemmed for my vertically-challenged frame, and the few that come in petite sizing always seem to sell out immediately. This gorgeous floral number fit me like a glove, and is now fully restocked in petite sizes! (And this geo-print version is 40% off!)

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 2P.

And finally, I’ve had these strappy wedge sandals for several years, and they look good with just about everything…and now back-in-stock in the flattering nude shade. (And you already know this is my go-to dress…especially considering I have it in three colors.)

TWO // My jaw is still on the ground that Real Simple featured me as their spotlight blogger in last month’s issue, and called me ‘the best friend you always wanted.’ I’m pretty sure that’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said about me.

THREE // As if it weren’t cool enough to work with Target to create a study space for Little Miss, they featured it on their Bullseye Blog, as did Good Housekeeping and Emily Henderson!! #saywhat? The features were thrilling, but even better, was the chance to do it with two of my favorite blogger friends, Kristin Jackson and Emily Clark. You’ll definitely want to check out their reveals, too!

FOUR // I’ve made a conscious effort to stay off my phone and computer most evenings this Summer, which shockingly, leaves lots of time to read! It’s been so long since I allowed myself the luxury of getting lost in a good book, and fell in love with reading all over again.

Of course my books of choice aren’t particularly strenuous…especially in the Summer! #givemeallthechiclit Elin Hildebrand is one of my favorite Summer authors, and her books always give me Nantucket-wanderlust…I’ve cranked these three out recently.

The Blue Bistro
This story grabbed me from the first page, and kept me glued throughout. It’s set in a magical little dinner spot, on the beach of Nantucket, and I loved the intricacies of the restaurant business, along with the food and romances behind-the-scenes.
Barefoot
I prefer focusing on a few key characters in stories, so when they hop between several, it takes me awhile to get hooked. This book was a slow start for me, but once the background was finally laid on everyone, I really enjoyed it.
The Matchmaker
I adored the quirky lead character and desperate love story in this book, but it took a shocking turn that left me really sad in the end.

FIVE // We might still be at the beach, but I’ve been busy filling out all the necessary forms, and shopping for supplies in order for the kids to return to school. I love to create a small gift for Little Miss’s teachers the first week, but this year I’m making it easier on myself, and ordering from this darling little Etsy shop, Blush & Bashful.

The owner is a former teacher, so I know everything she makes is teacher-approved…and its all monogrammed, so hello, perfect! I haven’t decided if I’ll order one of these inexpensive monogrammed decals to create the gift myself (like a monogrammed notebook or coffee mug), or let her do all the work with a full custom gift. Either way, I know it will be darling, and so appreciated! You can find some of my DIY Gift Ideas here.

Custom Monogram Decals (only $1.50!)

SIX // My supermodel friend (and mama-to-be!), Gwen of The Makerista, revealed her Kitchen renovation and it is straight out of the pages of Architectural Digest! I love a good white kitchen as much as the next person, but love the drama of painted cabinets and graphic tile even more. You won’t believe the look she created on a budget, using big-box store products!

SEVEN // We have Olympic Fever bad, and can’t seem to pry ourselves away from the TV this week! Which is okay considering we’ve been in the middle of some crazy tropical storms for days! #hurryupsun But ohemgee…can you even believe that Simone Biles?!

EIGHT // As the season comes to an end (even though we’ll have Summer weather for another 2-3 months!), the sales will start rolling in. These are a few of my key pieces, now heavily discounted.

My white Converse sneakers have been on constant repeat, and now they are on sale in gray and black. Some of you have expressed concern about keeping the white ones clean, so you may prefer the darker colors.

Fit Tip: The Shoreline Converse run half-size big, so size down.

This striped swing top is not only back-in-stock in several colors, but on sale for $23!

Fit Tip: I sized up one to a Small for more length on my long torso.

I’ve had this knit maxi for years, and now it’s available in 24 colors and patterns, and on sale!

And lastly, this color-blocked clutch isn’t actually on sale, but for $25, it might as well be!! It’s definitely my favorite purchase of late.

What’s rambling through your head this Friday? Have you found any great deals or read a good book lately? What are your thoughts on Snapchat vs. Instagram Stories? (I’m @cassiesugarplum on both) I’d love to hear what’s going on in your world! Happy weekend, lovebugs!

Ramblings

Cheers to Friday!! Thanks for all your kind comments and messages this week! I’m thrilled you loved the posts, and can hardly wait to share more with you. But today you get a brain dump of the ramblings currently going through my head, and latest happenings around here.

ONE // It’s been a good week for re-stocks…several of my recent favorite items are finally (as of now!!) back in stock in all sizes! Starting with the colorful romper from this 3 Ways post. You guys went kind of cuckoo for it, but it sold out in a day. The colors are just stunning, the elastic waist is flattering and comfy, and don’t forget the pockets! It has a cute racerback, so I wear this bra with it. And I love that it’s just as cute with espadrilles, wedges, or my favorite sneakers!

They’ve add a few more sizes and colors to my go-to dress…I currently own it in black, pink, and purple…I’m trying to tell myself that I don’t need the green. But I kind of do. I mean, I wear the heck out of them, and take them on every trip. These strappy wedges I’ve been wearing for years finally restocked in my nude color, too!
I think I wear this dress to almost every dinner…the neckline is super flattering, but the flowy body allows for all the desserts. I have it in black and pink, but now that it’s finally back, there’s two new colors, too!

Black Swing Dress (similar for $48) | Clutch | Similar Sandals | Earrings

Black Swing Dress | Clutch | Similar Bracelet

You guys were big fans of this striped swing top, and it’s back in new color combos.

TWO // I’ve had two fun features recently…starting with this one in Relish Magazine (it’s a Sunday insert in major market newspapers). The story was how to throw a Texas-style party/cookout…and I had the pleasure of being the resident Texan! #yall

And a sweet reader was nice enough to let me know our previous Dining Room was in the current issue of Family Circle! How can magazines use pictures of my house without my knowing, you ask? Well, since it’s a shot taken from the BHG shoot, they own all the images and rights to those pics, and can use them in all of their publications and websites.

Even though there’s no mention of me, it’s still flattering that they used my design as one of ‘3 Trends to Try’ (the brightly colored ceiling). Plus, it makes me so nostalgic to see our old house!! I miss her! (See the full House Tour here.)

THREE // How cute are these sandals, and would you even believe they’re from Target?

FOUR // Okay, I’ve been hesitant to share this next thing with you, well, because it’s pretty disgusting. But I think of ya’ll as my good friends, and I can’t seem to stop telling all my other friends about it…so here goes. It’s called Baby Feet, and it’s the most amazing, horrifying, genius, mystifying, shocking product I’ve ever tried.

Here’s the scoop….first you soak your feet in water to soften the skin, then you put these little plastic booties on and settle in for a couple hours of Netflix. It just feels cold and slimy, and smells a little citrusy, but that’s all. Then you wash your feet and wait a few days.

At first, you’ll think it didn’t work, and maybe you didn’t do it right. I mean, nothing is happening…your feet are just as dry and cracked as they were before.

But keep soaking your feet in water every night (I would actually just plug the drain while I was showering, and considered that my soak). Towards the end of the first week, you’ll start noticing the pads of your toes getting a little peely, then in between your toes and little sections of your heels. You’ll get really excited and text pics to your mom, and together you’ll be gleefully disgusted.

Then large sheets of skin will start coming off the bottom of your feet, and you’ll use it as a party trick to disgust your family.

A few days after that, you can no longer wear sandals, and you start wearing socks to hide the horror. But you’re secretly so mesmerized, you spend countless time alone in the bathroom peeling and inspecting.

And then, just when you think you can’t take it another day (because seriously, even the cuticles of your toes are peeling!!), the last piece of loose, dead skin rubs off…and you are left with the feet of a baby. No more calluses, no cracked heels, no scaly spots. The bottom of my feet and heels straight up look just like my 10-year-old’s!!!

I have no idea how or why, but it’s been over two months since I did it, and my feet look and feel just as new and smooth. The only downside is the week of foot disgrace. But considering the caldera-sized cracks in my heels before (thanks to years of going barefoot), it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make! Find it here.

FIVE // I know I’m a few years behind the times, but my brother and sister introduced me to How I Met Your Mother last Summer, and I was instantly hooked. It quickly became my evening de-stresser…every few nights, I’d climb into bed with my laptop, and watch an episode before bed. Each time, laughing out loud. Literally.

Now I’ve come to the final season, and have only about six episodes left…I know who the mom is, but don’t know how they’re going to wrap it all up, or if Barney and Robin actually get married. And the thing is, I just can’t bring myself to finish it! I’m not ready to say goodbye to those characters, or lose my evening laugh! Am I alone in getting that attached to a show? Are you a fan of it, too?

SIX // Now that Summer is full-blown here (we’re supposed to hit 100-degrees this weekend!!), I’m looking for easy, refreshing outdoor treats. These watermelon pops (from this party post) are always a hit around here, and really couldn’t be simpler.  We’re big on easy homemade ice cream, too…find all my recipes here.

SEVEN // Finally, I noticed several items from recent style posts are now on sale, so I thought I’d share in case you had your eye on them. This handkerchief hem dress is 40% off, and fully stocked. The colors and strappy back just scream SUMMER to me.

Sunglasses | Watch | Ring

These ankle-length, frayed-hem jeans have been really popular (and in almost-daily rotation!)…the sizing availably is hit and miss, but now 40% off only $40! And this non-distressed version are only $29! I’ve had several of you say you stalked them, and grabbed a pair as soon as your size popped up…and all agree they are fab!
Fit Tip: Size down one! I mean it!
Striped Straw Tote (also available here) | Striped Linen Scarf | Watch | Bracelet

Limited sizing in this one, too, but this lace dress is also 40% off!

Lace Dress | Nude Sandals (on sale!) | Similar Clutch | Watch | Ring

And finally, the fun dress from this post is finally on sale…for a whopping 40% off!

What’s rambling through your head this Friday? Have you tried Baby Feet? If you don’t believe my hype, just check out the almost 5,000 near-perfect reviews! But whatever you do, don’t image search it! Unless you’re trying to lose weight, then go ahead. 😉 Happy weekend, lovebugs, and happy Father’s day to my most amazing, witty, empathic, passionate, clever baby daddy!!!

I've tried Baby Feet twice and it didn't really work for me. I tried all the tricks, like soaking in water before use, and then soaking in water again each day. Ramblings

Mondays always start a little bleary-eyed for me, especially after a weekend of spoiling. Too bad every weekend can’t be Mother’s Day…I could get used all the pampering and attention! But funny enough, when Mr. SP asked what I wanted, I handed him a mini project list. Not that he wouldn’t help me anytime I asked, but it was nice to get a few things done without grumbling! 😉

One of the projects was in Little Miss’s Room…I had hoped to share it with you today, but just couldn’t get my act together in time…so instead, you get a brain dump of the ramblings currently going through my head, and latest happenings around here.

ONE // I somehow swung invitations to some pretty delicious events lately…first was a brunch at Sissy’s Southern Kitchen, hosted by Hush Puppies (maker of my fave tassel booties!). The sun porch at this popular Dallas spot, was hosed down with all sorts of darling Spring decor, and topped off with grapefruit juleps and chicken and waffles!

Hi Sugarplum | Ramblings

Hi Sugarplum | Ramblings

The second was the most amazing dinner hosted by The Everygirl and Kendall Jackson…with food prepared by Top Chef Season 12 winner, Mei Lin!!! I definitely had a #fangirl moment with her, as I’m a huge fan of the show. And even though I love to eat, I don’t do foo-foo food, so I was a little leery as to what she’d serve.

Um, it was only the best meal I’ve ever had (next to tacos)! I was trying to make polite conversation with the people around me, but really I wanted to lick the bowl after every single course! It was all Thai inspired, and can you believe she prepared it in the William Sonoma store!?! (Hello, no oven or stove?!?)

Hi Sugarplum | Ramblings

Hi Sugarplum | Ramblings

Hi Sugarplum | Ramblings

I was especially happy with my outfit choice that night, as the tent dress allowed ample room for five courses! #oink

Tonight's look for the #KJxTEGwinenights dinner with @meilin21 @kjwines & @theeverygirl_  Feeling full, happy & unbelievably grateful for the opportunity to experience such food, wine & friendship! #sugarplumstyle // @liketoknow.it www.liketk.it/2jFSw #li

TWO // Did you see Joanna Gaines of Magnolia Market and Fixer Upper fame has a line of home decor at Nordstrom now? And can you believe I’ve actually never seen that show? I’ve seen pictures of their makeovers though, and love several pieces from the new line…especially the stools.

THREE // Consider my mind blown when Oprah’s people contacted me not once, but twice, to feature my post about hiding cords, and include our previous Living Room in their ‘How to Decorate with Pantone’s Color of the Year‘, on her website! It makes me laugh thinking about Oprah attaching Command hooks to the backs of her tables, so the lamp cords don’t show. She probably doesn’t even notice her cords with all the fresh flowers scattered about!

FOUR // A few weekends ago, Dara Burriss, our favorite artist, was showing at a local Art Fair, so we stopped in to say Hi, and see her latest works. There’s no question her piece just made our Living Room One Room Challenge, and our entire family has become her biggest fans. Both kids immediately spotted pieces they wanted in their rooms.

Hi Sugarplum | Ramblings
Hi Sugarplum | Ramblings

It’s no surprise my son prefers white space, and Little Miss loves full saturation. Kind of funny that their taste in art mirrors their personalities. I’ve got my eye on this piece…are you dying over the pinks and golds?! And Dara really couldn’t be any nicer…or cuter…and I’m thrilled for all her success!

Hi Sugarplum | Ramblings

I told you about the more affordable canvas prints she offers now, but there’s been so much demand that she started selling paper prints, as well. They look great in person, and it’s an inexpensive way to add a little Dara Burriss to your home.

Hi Sugarplum | Ramblings
FIVE // I shared our favorite Mother’s Day tradition, along with tips for throwing your own Tea Party, on Martha Stewart last week. (You like how I said ‘Martha’ all casual-like? You know that’s a facade…I totally squealed!) 😉

SIX // The countdown to Summer break has begun around here, so I’ve been on the look-out for fun teacher gift ideas. I love this little pampering kit, paired with a pedicure gift certificate! Click here to see of the Teacher Gift projects I’ve done in the past.

via

SEVEN // We just finished the latest season of House of Cards. We actually started watching it the week it was released, it just took us this long to get through them all…I wasn’t that impressed. Did you watch it?

EIGHT // I was thrilled to see one of my favorite Summer staple dresses was brought back, and in fun new colors. It’s such a steal, and you can see I wore it for everything from Date Night to days at the lake and pool. (The maxi version is here, and this one and this one are similar options.)

NINE // I came across these pics this weekend, and realized I never shared the dress with you. It was a back-up for the blogger conference, and actually my first-choice for the all-white party. You all convinced me to try something different, so I wore this dress instead, but I still adore the lacy little number!

What’s rambling through your head this Monday? I hope your day is a peaceful one, lovebugs!
P.S…Happy birthday to my best girl, and the fittest person I know! And thank you to Nordstrom for sponsoring a portion of today’s post.

Ramblings

Mondays always start a little bleary-eyed for me, and especially the Monday after a fun girls weekend! It was much-needed facetime with some of my favorite girls, with lots of laughing, talking, eating…and not a lot of sleeping! But as I told you in this raw post, girl’s night out isn’t something I make time for often enough, so it’s always so good to step away from my wife/mom responsibilites  for a few days. Hopefully I managed to get some usable pics, and I’ll share it with you soon!

I had big plans for a post today, but just couldn’t get my act together, so it will have to wait for another day…and instead, you get a brain dump of the ramblings currently going through my head.

ONE //  Domino has always been my favorite shelter publication, and no one was happier when they brought it back (except for that ridiculous price tag they charge for each issue!!??)…so I had a sort-of fangirl moment when they recently featured my How to Hide Lamp Cords and Organized Bathroom Cabinets tips in their Command Hook Hacks story!

TWO //  The Spring edition of One Room Challenge started last week, and there’s a stellar line-up of bloggers participating…many of whom are my real-life friends! Including my #girlcrush, Kristin Jackson. It’s no surprise she’s my favorite designer…afterall, she was the secret sauce behind my Living Room! I can’t wait for each week’s update from her, and the other 19 rockstar bloggers (including my love, Megan!!). You can check out my past ORC here and here.

THREE //  Remember when BH&G came to shoot our last home? It was amazing and so special to have that keepsake of our home, but apparently they file all those images away in their database to use for future stories! #whoknew So it was a fun surprise to see our last Living Room pop up in the ‘Pillow Talk’ story of their new special interest publication, Makeovers. Thanks to Jen for letting me know!!

And funny enough…another shot of our Living Room appears in the March issue of BH&G…but this time, so unrecognizable, even I didn’t notice when I read my copy!! Thankfully, my friend Jennifer has an eagle-eye and texted me the pic! So funny to see how they changed it up to fit the color story, but I think I prefer the sofa in blue! I also love that even though Jennifer has never seen my house in person, she instantly recognized the room as mine!! I would know her rooms anywhere, too, though!

FOUR // I’m beyond excited to be invited to speak at the Bloom Workshop in Florida next month! I’ve long-admired their beautiful locations, classes, and images, and am so flattered to be included in the next one held at the stunning Lange Farms in Dade City. I’ll be sitting in on Q&A sessions, answering all your questions about blogging, style, and design.

If you’re in the area, I’d love to see you there…but only a few spots remain! But for you lucky ducks, code SUGARPLUM600 gets you $600 off your ticket!! #hello #thatsbig

FIVE // We’ve had some pretty delightful weather lately, so I’ve finally had the chance to bust out my  perfect wear-anywhere, take-everywhere dress…which is back for the season! Still priced under $50, but now in seven great colors. To say I wear this dress a lot is like saying Trump needs a new hairdresser. #captainobviouscalled

Fit Tip: It’s true to size for me, and I wear an XS.

Racerback Dress in ‘Blue Spectrum’ | Panama Hat | Sunglasses | Earrings

SIX //  One of the coolest shops in Dallas, Scout Design Studio, dubbed me as their ‘designer’ of the month…which basically meant I got to play room-dress-up in their unbelievable inventory! Using only what they had in store, I designed this living area for their showroom.

Considering it takes me ages to complete a room in my own house, I was nervous about pulling this off…but can you believe I did it in an hour!? #itsokaytosayno As soon as I spotted this huge piece by Dara Burriss, I knew it would be the focal point, and the rest of the room just fell in to place.

SEVEN //  Several of you asked about my nail polish color in the recent 1 Cardi | 4 Ways and Three Ways | Pink Jacket posts…which is funny because I had no idea anyone even looked that closely at my pictures! But I guess it makes sense since I always notice great polish colors on others…especially at the change of new seasons.

I have about five colors I rotate through regularly, most of which are in the red or pink family #shocker, but this particular shade is Estee Lauder’s ‘Hot Coral.‘ I also love their ‘Ballerina Pink’ for a softer nail. Good news, too, not only is the polish on sale, but it’s Gift With Purchase time, and it’s a good one (a $130 value with just a $35 purchase)!! I’m really curious about this Bronzed Whipped Body Creme and may take this opportunity to try it.

{Top Picks for Gift with Purchase}

Are you a sucker for gifts with purchase?? I have a hard time resisting them, but also figure it’s a good opportunity to try new products. What’s rambling through your head this Monday?

*Thank you to Nordstrom for sponsoring a portion of this post!*

One more thing… Do you feel like more expensive polish last longer? I usually just grab Essie. I will say my last bottle of Essie from nordstroms stays chip free longer than grocery store bottles of Essie. Different formulas maybe?!

    • MelissaG wrote:

Christina…I normally by Smith and Cult polish. It's $18… And I love it! There aren't a lot of color options, but great polish. I do think it's better than Essie. However, I often find the amount of chipping is directly related to how long my nails are at the time. If I let them get a little longer, they chip more easily. But Essie, for me is about a 3 day max. My more expensive polish can get me 5-7 days. It's worth it to me! I'm going to try this EL!

    • hisugarplum wrote:

Hi girls!!! I agree with Melissa…the shorter my nails, the less chipping. And I'm all over the place with my nail polishes…literally have $25 bottles, and $2 bottles! The biggest difference I see is the intensity of color (less coats with the pricier brands), and the amount of shine.

And that GWP is supposed to start today…hopefully they'll have that good one on the site soon!!

Ramblings

Whoa Nelly, this Monday snuck up on me, and quite frankly, is kicking my bootie a little! Between traveling across time zones, and the time change, we’re all a little bleary-eyed this morning. Not to mention, I’m suffering from Spring Break withdrawals. I went from 24-hour family time, to everyone going their separate ways…I miss my people and no schedules! I wish we could live in our Spring Break bubble forever!!

I had big plans for a post today, but just couldn’t get my act together, so it will have to wait for another day…and instead, you get a brain dump of the ramblings currently going through my head.

ONE // Remember this sassy little black dress from a {Date Night Style} post? The perfect date night/girls night/ happy hour dress? It sold out in a hot-second last year, but it’s back…and priced to sell! I’m wearing an XS and find the fit to be generous. This one is really similar, and under $50.

I liked the silhouette so much, I picked it up in pink last year, too, and styled it {Day to Night}.

TWO // Speaking of back-in-stock…my strappy wedge sandals from last year popped back up, and in four great neutral colors. I wore them from everything to dresses and skirts, to shorts and jeans. The neutral tone is leg-lengthening, and the wedge just high enough to give you a lift without being uncomfortable.

THREE // I continue to be overwhelmed by the response to our Living Room from last year’s One Room Challenge. As if it’s not treat enough to enjoy my morning coffee in this room, House Beautiful just named it one of their favorites from all 10 seasons of the ORC! #Icanteven I’m humbled to be included among their stellar top picks. Since I participated in two back-to-back challenges, I’ll be sitting out the next one starting in April, but I can’t wait to see who Linda selected, and watch them work their magic!

FOUR // If you’re a dog-person, then it’s likely your house revolves around your fur-baby as much as ours, and you’ll stop at nothing to make them comfortable and happy. If that’s the case, then you’ll want to check out these waterproof dog beds from Shop Janery! Miss Maggie Sugarplum has been sleeping like a princess on the navy herringbone for several months, and I’m thrilled with how well it’s held up! The insert is just as full and fluffy as the day it arrived, and the cover launders beautifully.

FIVE // One of my favorite people on the planet just had the most precious little girl, and I can hardly stand the sweetness. I can’t wait to get my hands on her baby, and breathe-in all that yummy babyness! I couldn’t be happier for Megan, who’s honestly the sweetest, most endearing person I know. Hard to believe we’re friends, right?! 😉

SIX // Another of my darling friends, Sheaffer, who’s as funny as Megan is nice (that’s not to say Sheaffer isn’t nice, she’s just really, really funny…and I’d know, because I know funny), just relaunched her blog with a new, more appropriate name…Sheaffer Told Me To. Because not only is she funny, but the girl’s bossy! But dang-it if she isn’t alway right!

SEVEN // Another of my favorites just launched her own shop! Danielle Oakey is known for her use of color and decorating on a budget, and now her collection of pillows will elevate any space. I’m adding a few to our new Bonus Room and can’t believe the difference they make!

Babies, websites, shops…clearly I hang with some amazing girls! What’s rambling through your head today? I’m also thinking about this scarf, perfect for Spring-time temps and currently on clearance. #asyouwere
