Cute & Cozy for Christmas

Can you even believe Christmas Eve is in 10 days?! The next few weekends are chock-full of holiday parties, but also a lot of casual family and friend gatherings, that call for relaxed, cozy styles. Today I’m sharing two Cute & Cozy outfits I wore last month at the sublime Inn at Newport Ranch, that are perfect for a cozy Christmas afternoon. And eating. #keepingitreal

We’ll kick it off with what’s become my daily uniform lately…cardigan + boots + scarf. Seriously, where have long cardigans been my whole life?! They are so effortlessly chic, yet manage to cover the parts that tend to expand this time of year. #oops

Fit Tip: I find that most of these long cardigans run large, so I size down to keep it from completely overwhelming my frame. Remember, we’re not trying to bring the duster back.

The Inn at Newport Ranch is truly one of the most majestic places we’ve ever visited. Located on a 2,000-acre coastal cattle ranch, the seven-room Inn sits overlooking a mile of breathtaking rugged cliffs and ocean views, with plateaus of mighty redwoods at it’s back, and wide-open coastal plains on either side.
The entire property was built with natural and local materials, showcasing the bounty and romance of the Mendocino Coast. It’s a quiet and peaceful retreat that feels far away from the hustle of real life, and we were completely captivated by the setting and hospitality of the innkeepers.

This scarf is a favorite not only for the beautiful Fall colors, but because it’s already a triangle shape, so it cuts down on the usual bulk of a blanket scarf. Check out my How To Tie Blanket Scarves post to see how I styled it.

There should be no surprise the second look includes my all-time favorite leggings…because hello, room for seconds! I love that they are super opaque so no skin shows through, and the wide waistband is comfortable without rolling down.

Some people think leggings are pants, and will wear them with any length top. I am of the opposite opinion, and strongly believe that leggings are not pants, and only longer, tunic-style tops should be worn with them. #coveryourladybitsladies

Fit Tip: The leggings are true to size, and I’m wearing an XS. I’ve had this exact pair for over a year, and have washed and dried them countless times with no shrinking or fading. They are also a great length for shorter boots, or tucking in knee-boots.

We started each day with a hearty breakfast provided by the Inn, then explored the miles of trails along the coastal bluffs, without a person in site. Afternoons were usually spent lounging by the fire, before the nightly happy hour hosted by the Inn. Sunset was the most magical time of day, where everything seemed to pause as the warm glow blanketed every inch of the property.

The Inn at Newport Ranch is still new and feels very much undiscovered, but I guarantee that will change! It’s already on virtually every hot list from Travel + Leisure to Conde Nast, so I’d add it to your short list.

I’ll have more on our trip to the Mendocino Coast, including the full itinerary soon, but first Christmas! What do you like wearing for casual family gatherings this time of year? Do you stick with cute and cozy? See more cozy styles here and here.

Hello! I purchased this same sweater along with a BP version and they are both pilling (sp?) terribly. Can you share how you deal with that? THANK YOU!

    • Yikes! I haven't seen much of that, maybe a little under the arms. I usually pull off the little balls with a lint roller or a piece of packing tape. See if that helps! Unfortunately, these aren't expensive sweaters, so some of that is going to happen. :/

You can buy little, inexpensive, electric depillers. They do a great job of keeping your sweaters looking new.

What a beautiful Inn and location! If we head down the coast this winter, I'll have to check it out.
I was thinking a tartan blouse/shirt would be pretty and festive without being in your face Christmas. Any ideas, Cassie?

    • Love that!! In fact, I wore a tartan plaid shirt with a black skirt, tights and booties…and a blingy necklace, of course…to the symphony last weekend! It was festive, but still warm! xo

You say you sized down in the burgundy sweater, does that mean XXS?

    Posted 12.14.16 Reply
    • I'm in an XS. If you're in between sizes, def err on the side of going smaller with these type of sweaters! xo

Do you wear your booties with any kind of no show socks or do you wear them barefoot? I just bought that pair and the cut outs dig in a little to the side of my foot.

    • I did wear little ankle socks with them when I flew, but usually I go sockless. They don't rub or bother me, but I did size down half…maybe that impacts it?
