Look for Less

Happy February, friends! We had a freak heat-wave blow through this weekend, and it was a gorgeous 75-degrees everyday! Needless to say, we spent the better part of it outside, so that makes being back at a desk particularly hard today! I actually want the cold to return (Winter should be Winter!), but the warm days do have me excited for Spring. Hopefully not for a few more months though!

Today I’m excited to bring you a big ole Look for Less roundup! You guys have made it pretty clear you love these posts, and I’m more than happy to troll the internet looking for deals…so it’s a win-win for us both! It’s like a challenge to find lower-priced items that give the same impact as their higher-priced counterparts…and obviously I love a good challenge!

That doesn’t mean that I always endorse the lower priced item, but it’s good to know your options. In some instances it’s worth it to pay a little more…that’s when I stalk and wait for a good sale!

This latest installment is a doozy…Mr. SP and I were watching the strangest movie the other night (Birdman, have you seen it?!), and I wasn’t really feeling it, so I turned my attention to my laptop instead.

Sidenote: I goofed the placement of a few items because the Low version looked so much better than the High! But ain’t nobody got time for new graphics!

We’ll start with booties, because they are my shoe-obsession this season. I’m pretty hard on my shoes, so while I do invest a little more for good quality, I don’t completely splurge because I know they’ll only last me a few years anyway. And since I’m now addicted to my rain boots (these pink ones are $50 off!!), I’m intrigued by the shorter version I show below. Anyone have experience with them?

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less

Strappy Booties : High  //  Low
Low Ankle Bootie : High  //  Low
Low Ankle Bootie : High  //  Low
Short Rainboot : High  //  Low

Every woman should own at least one pair of leopard heels…they just make an outfit! Even if it’s a simple little black dress, leopard heels make it ‘wow’!

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Ankle Strap Sandals : High  //  Low
High-Heel Pumps : High  //  Low
Low-Heel Pumps : High  //  Low

Peacoats and trench coats are wardrobe staples and never go out of style…you know I love this peacoat…in fact I already own it it two colors (size up!). I’ve seen this low-option trench and it’s fabulous…I haven’t seen this one, but it’s an amazing price, too.

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Camel Peacoat : High  //  Low
Khaki Trench : High  //  Low

Trendy pieces are usually fairly easy to find Look for Less options, but the classics can be a little harder. These are all great options.
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Chambray Dress : High  //  Low
Tunic Blouse : High  //  Low
Pleated Leather Skirt : High  //  Low
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Illusion Top Dress: High  //  Low
Halter Trapeze Dress:  High  //  Low

We’re headed to the snow for Spring Break, so I’ve still got cozy tops and sweaters on my mind. I just picked up the low-option cashmere sweater in both crew neck and v-neck, and love them!

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Funnel Neck Pullover : High  //  Low
Ivory Turtleneck : High  //  Low
Crewneck Cashmere Sweater : High  //  Low
Accessories are the easiest way to change up an outfit, and also another area I prefer not to splurge! Lucky for my penny-pinching ways, there are always plenty of Look for Less options! I actually own every single one of these low-options. #sorrynotsorry

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Crystal Collar : High  //  Low
Horn Pendant : High  //  Low
Pearl Cluster : High  //  Low
Bar Pendant : High  //  Low

And this isn’t really a Look for Less, but such a great sale it’s worth mentioning…we’re headed to the snow next month, and I don’t think my peacoat is going to cut it, so I’ve been scoping out this huge selection of Winter parkas for up to 60% off! What do you Northern girls think…see any winners? Mr. SP keeps telling me it’s about being warm, not a fashion show. But obviously he’s wrong…it’s both! 😉

What’s your favorite Look for Less this go-round? Have you spotted any good ones lately? Send them my way so I can share with the class. See more posts in this series here or clicking on this graphic in the sidebar. Happy Monday, love bugs!

P.S….My darling friend Shay, is releasing not one, but two, great cookbooks today! #canyoueven I’m just so so excited and proud of her! To celebrate, several of us are hosting a fab giveaway on Instagram. So hop over a little later today (no posting before coffee!), and enter to win 1 of 10 sets of books, plus a stand-up mixer!! #icanteven

  2. I own the low option pearl cluster necklace and wear it with so many different outfits. I love it! From a northern girl- you can't go wrong with a faux fur hooded parka-always keeps your face cozy in the wind.

I also should add that I found the most perfect chambray button down at Nordstrom. It's Topshop and on sale for $30. It's drapey and loose but not baggy and just perfect. 🙂 I wore it out for dinner this weekend on an 80 degree day and was completely comfortable.

Also from a Northern (and Rockies) girl-skip the fashion brands on coats and go for true classics: Patagonia, North Face, Pendleton-they're proven and will keep you MUCH warmer.

  7. Coming from the north, you can't go wrong with a down, thigh-length parka from a reputable brand. Black or dark colors and waist cinching or a belt help keep you from looking like a marshmallow stick. Functionality tends to overrule style when you live in the north. Parkas can all tend to look alike to me. I do love a cozy, furry hood! A packable down coat might also work and would be more slimming. Add style with a fun hat, scarf, and gloves.

  8. I have the Sam Edelman low rain boots in leopard, and I scored them for even "less" over the holidays on sale. They are super comfy, and great for when I don't want to commit to my knee high rainboots, or to wear for school drop off and the drive to work, and then change into different shoes. Plus I get compliments EVERY time I wear them!

    Posted 2.1.16 Reply
  9. I just got the urban navy north face parka, my last north face has lasted for up to 10 Iowa winters! I will be wearing my new parks in the blizzard to the IA caucus tonight 😉 along with my sorel boots

    Posted 2.1.16 Reply
  10. I completely agree with Amy – skip all those fashion brands and stick to North Face or Patagonia! PLUS (faux) fur hoods are worth their weight in gold. When you wear your hood, they keep your face and neck so much warmer

Look for Less

The best thing about this Monday, is the floor guys have finally left my house! After a day spent chipping away with crowbars, they decided jackhammers were needed. Needless to say, we made ourselves scarce the last few days! But they’ve almost got everything back together, so now I can get back on track with the {One Room Challenge}! #wishmeluck

This first graphic is a little different than usual…the tall boots were giving me grief, so the low priced options are below them. And are those over-the-knee boots really fourteen hundred dollars?! Maybe they make you skinny and bring you untold wealth?? They must be magic of some kind!!?? I’ve got my eye on these low-priced rain boots…they have the cutest colors and patterns! After getting constant wear out of my other Look for Less boots last year, I’m now a full rain boot convert!
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Riding Boot:  High  //  Low
Over the Knee Wedge Boot:  High  //  Low
Rubber Rain Boot:  High  //  Low
Remember I tried this Low asymmetrical dress in the last {Dressing Room Diaries}? I love it even more now that I know there’s a $365 counterpart!
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Asymmetrical Hem Dress:  High  //  Low
V-Neck Shirtdress:  High  //  Low
I actually prefer the Low versions of both these sweaters! Well done, retailers!
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Plaid Blanket Poncho:  High  //  Low
Colorblock Sweater:  High  //  Low
Accessories are always a place I go for the Low version…I love mixing them up too much to invest in pricey pieces! I actually have all three of these Low options…and all have the power to elevate an outfit!
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Leopard Foldover Clutch:  High  //  Low
Statement Bib Necklace:  High  //  Low
Beaded Tassel Earrings:  High  //  Low
Boots, on the other hand, are an area I’m willing to pay a bit more…especially considering how often I wear them. I think you can get away with really inexpensive Summer shoes, like sandals, but for comfort and durability, Fall and Winter shoes should be more high-quality. But that doesn’t mean I break the bank…all of these Low options are great choices that will last for years! I own and adore the Low ankle booties, and came thisclose to keeping the Low fringe booties. If only I could justify two pair of taupe booties.
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Fringe Bootie:  High  //  Low
Peep-Toe Bootie:  High  //  Low
Low-Ankle Bootie:  High  //  Low
Lace-Up Pumps:  High  //  Low

Another good one…an actual High, but priced for Less, is all Kate Spade on super sale! That means my favorite watch, worn 1087 times on this blog, is marked down to an all-time low! And how cute is this ‘heart of gold’ bangle (hello, teacher gift!) and this handbag! You know, Mr. SP…my birthday is around the corner! #notsosubtlehint

Look for Less

First up…thank you for all the friendly comments on our full Kitchen Breakdown post yesterday! I love this community and appreciate your kindness more than you know! If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to check out all the homely befores, and bubba-hubba afters!

You guys have made it pretty clear you love these Look for Less posts, and I’m more than happy to troll the internet looking for deals…so it’s a win-win for us both! It’s like a challenge to find lower-priced items that give the same impact as their higher-priced counterparts…and I love a good challenge!

That doesn’t mean that I always endorse the lower priced item, but it’s good to know your options. In some instances it’s worth it to pay a little more…that’s when I stalk and wait for a good sale!
This latest installment is a doozy…I just kept finding more and more great deals. I thought about saving some of them for a future post, but couldn’t stand not sharing all the golden tickets nuggets…so enjoy! And remember, to be fair, I don’t list sale prices in the graphics.
So, I own all three of these Low option bags…guess I’m a sucker for a good cross body. You may recognize the saddle bag from last week’s {Now & Later} post…it sold out pretty quickly, but looks like they’re adding new stock regularly.
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Small Crossbody Bag:  High    Low
Crossbody Saddle Bag:  High    Low
Striped Clutch:  High    Low
I’m a fan of these Low option riding boots, too! They are soft leather, but look like they’ll only get better with age. They also happen to be on sale, and come in wide-calf…so there’s that. The plaid scarf comparison is a bit of a stretch, but you get the gist.
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Plaid Scarf:  High    Low
Knee-High Riding Boots:  High    Low (on sale!)
Strappy Boots:  High    Low
Wow, this is getting embarrassing…I have this Low option striped cardi, too! How could I not though?!?! Black and white stripes, soft, stretchy, and on sale for $28?! I was powerless.
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Striped Open-Front Cardigan:  High    Low (on sale for $28!)
Solid Draped Cardigan:  High    Low
I may or may not have this buffalo checked Low option vest. #ido And maybe I plan on wearing it with everything from striped tees to chambray shirts. #ido And maybe if you use code SAVEBIG you’ll get it for 30% off. #youwill I actually don’t own either of these plaid shirts, but mainly because my closet is stuffed with other plaid shirts!
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Buffalo Check Puffer Vest:  High    Low
Plaid Shirt:  High    Low
These are excellent Look for Less options for everyday jewels. It’s safe to say I have one of each. #houstonwehaveaproblem
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Hammered Hoop Earrings:  High    Low
Stone Drop Earrings:  High    Low
Pave Link Bracelet:  High    Low
Crystal Statement Necklace:  High    Low
I’m fickle when it comes to my handbags…I love to switch them up too much to invest in anything budget-breaking. I don’t want to feel obligated to carry a bag long after I tire of it just because I spent a small fortune, you know?
I’m especially smitten with Barrington’s new Fall Collection…including the black watch plaid (which you’ll see more of later this week!), and these two Look for Less patterns. Oh, and how about an additional 10% off?!!? Yes ma’am…just use code SUGARPLUM10 in the discount code box. #yourewelcome
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Fringe Bag:  High    Low (on sale!)
Camo Tote Bag:  High    Low
Checkered Tote Bag:  High    Low (add your monogram for $5!)

Look for Less

I can’t even express my gratitude and joy for all your amazing comments, emails, texts, and posts regarding the Redbook cover. Your genuine joy knocked me over, and I’ve been choked-up and teary-eyed for the last few days. I realize how lucky I am to be given these opportunities, and also how completely obnoxious they can be to hear about…so thank you for your enthusiasm and support!
It’s been awhile since I rounded-up some of my favorite Looks for Less, so I thought I’d share a few with you today. Fall will be here before we know it, so soon it’ll be all about the transition pieces (see my formula for transitioning to Fall here). I trolled the internet looking for deals on great, classic pieces…I love finding lower-priced items that give the same impact as their higher-priced counterparts! Remember, to be fair, I don’t list sale prices.
If you’ve been following my blog for more than a minute, or ever seen a Sugarplum Style post, you know I’m addicted to my utility and jean jackets. I challenge you to find an outfit that doesn’t benefit from one of them! I have, and adore, the Low version shown below of both. Do we need a {5 Ways} post on each, just to demonstrate my point!?

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Classic Trench:  High    Low
Utility Jacket:  High    Low
Jean Jacket:  High    Low
Nude wedges are both comfortable and flattering, and I have a sudden urge for the peep-toe bootie! I’ve had a similar pearl cluster necklace for years, and love it paired with both dressy and casual outfits…remember this one?
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Nude Wedge Sandal:  High    Low
Nude Peep-Toe Bootie:  High    Low
Pearl Cluster Necklace:  High    Low

Two more Low version tops I own and love…the cami (available in 14 gorgeous colors and worn here), and gingham shirt.

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Cami Blouse:  High    Low
Geo-Embroidered Tote Bag:  High (on sale for $64 right now!)    Low

I love the look of the nude sandals (and on sale!) and the Toms peep toe booties. Peep toe booties are on my show wish list. Might have to give those a try! Old Navy also has a cute gingham (pull over). I don't have it but have been eyeing it.

I went with then linen blend field jacket from Old Navy. I tried both and ultimately decided I liked the linen blend for the tad bit of stretch across the back. Fits my season of life better with little ones. (For anyone trying to decide!)

I can only imagine the excitement seeing yourself on the cover of a magazine in the airport! So exciting!

  2. Those sandals- seriously?! I haven't walked into an AE since college, but I'm apparently missing out! And always love a good floppy hat, especially for that price. Great picks!

    Hi Cassie,

I found this maxi dress similar to your jade one 🙂 I'm pretty sure in store there was a jade/teal colored one 🙂 I think it's even more similar to your high than the low you have 🙂 irina from bozeman 🙂

  7. What is interesting about these look a-likes, to me anyway, I really like the items that cost less than the high end items, and would choose to buy the, not because they are cheaper, but because they "ALL" look "better" than the more expensive

Look for Less

Monday came quick and early, didn’t it?! I guess that’s the downside of a girls-only weekend…but I’d say it’s a pretty fair trade considering how much fun we had. I’ll share some pics, along with outfits I packed, later this week…but today it’s another round of Look for Less.

These posts have quickly become one of your favorites, so I hope this round-up gives you some new inspiration. Remember, to be fair, I don’t list sale prices.

I’ve been a fan of this Low-option dress for awhile. In fact, it was one of my first {5 Ways} post, and even appeared in this {Date Night Style} post. I wore it again this weekend (see the outfit here), and it didn’t disappoint. I also have it in black (seen here in my {Travel Tips} 1 Dress 3 Ways post), and now I’m considering adding the new green to my collection. #yesitsthatgood

For sizing reference…I wear the XS, but if you’re taller, you may want to size up for a longer length.

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less

Racerback Shift Dress:  High  |  Low
Sleeveless Dress:  High  |  Low
Strappy Sandal:  High  |  Low

I’ve recently discovered, and fallen for, Accessory Concierge. Not only do they have great Look for Less pieces, but the quality is on par with higher priced options. I just got these earrings and have worn them every day for a week.

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Statement Fan Necklace:  High  |  Low
Long Necklace:  High  |  Low
Pearl Cluster Necklace:  High  |  Low

There have been some requests that home items be included in these round-ups, and I’m nothing if not a people-pleaser. 😉

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Shoreline Large Art:  High  |  Low
Glass Decorative Box:  High  |  Low
Modern Giraffe Figurine:  High  |  Low

Fossil is a great source for Look for Less…but did you know they are actually owned by the same company as Michael Kors? Yes, ma’am! And virtually every Michael Kors design has a lower priced Fossil counterpart. I have this one and adore it.

However, if you’ve really been dying for a Michael Kors watch, now might just be the time, seeing as how almost all of them are 25-40% off…and some, like this one, are even 50% off! (Hey Mr. SP, if you’re reading, I’d love the pink one, currently on sale for $86, for Mother’s Day!) #notsosubtlehint

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Tortoise Watch:  High  |  Low
Pink Face Watch:  High  |  Low (currently 40% off for $86!)
Gold Crystal Face Watch:  High  |  Low

And Kate Spade isn’t necessarily a Look for Less, but tons of her bags and jewels are on a rare super sale, so I thought I’d let you know (including the watch I’m wearing in most every Sugarplum Style shot!). Talk about good Mother’s Day gifts! What’s your favorite Look for Less this go-round? Have you spotted any good ones lately? Let me know the types of items you like seeing most in these posts!

These post are always fun. This weekend I grabbed a pair of cognac sandals at target- Sam and Libby that have a touch of gold and snake skin and they are my favorite already. I was eyeing the same style at Nordroms but they were out of my size. My last target sandals are 2 years old ($15) and have been the best. That's my high low 🙂

    • I love those Sam & Libby sandals…sounds like I need to make a Target run!! xo

  2. I have had the gold/pink Fossil watch for about a year or two now, and I always get compliments on it. 🙂 It's a lot of fun. They also have a turquoise version I'd like at some point.

By the way, FYI – the pink on the Fossil watch is much more vibrant in real life than the pink on the Michael Kors watch. That's why I personally chose the Fossil one. I love some hot pink. 🙂

    • SOLD!!! I need more hot pink in my life! 😉 xo

Thanks for the High Low posts – love them! Question about the Tildon racer back dress – wear a bra with it? The armholes look low and I'm curious if finding the right bra is hard. Also I'm debating between a xs or small. I'm 5'4", 125, and 34C.

    Posted 4.27.15 Reply
    • The armholes are a tad low…not really an issue with the black one because a black bra blends seamlessly. With the pink one (when I wear a bra, bc let's face it, I don't really 'need' to), I wear a bright colored bandeau for a peek of color, or a lacey bralette that adds a feminine touch. Click over to my IG page and you'll see how the bralette looks peeking out. I wear an XS and am 32A, so you might want to consider a Small. But the good thing with Nordstrom, is you can order both and send back the one that doesn't fit well. Free shipping and returns!! Hope this helps!

Look for Less

Thank you guys so much for your opinions and feedback (wow, there were a lot, you guys blow me away!!) regarding painting the new Kitchen! I think I know which option we’ll go with, and hopefully I can tackle it after Spring Break. (So obviously you know I didn’t choose Option #4!)

I posted this pic to InstaGram last weekend and apparently this combo was a big hit! This is seriously the best field jacket that ever was…especially for the price! It’s quite possible I’ve worn it three times since it arrived Friday. I feel a {5 Ways} post coming on with it!!

Field Jacket | Gray Tee (similar) | Distressed Jeans | Booties (similar)

I’ve wanted one for awhile, but wasn’t willing to pay a lot for it…this one gives me the same look, but for one-third the cost of others I’ve seen. I love a good Look-for-Less, so I rounded up some of the better ones I’ve seen lately. To be fair, I listed full price for each item, even though a good sale can sometimes knock down the higher priced item to a more competitive level.
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Field Jacket // High  | Low
Jean Jacket // High  |  Low

I have this exact jean jacket too….I would have to say it’s one of my top 5 wardrobe staples. I actually have two…one sized larger for layering over sweaters, and a smaller one for a fitted look with tanks, tees and sundresses. But even buying two was a bargain compared to the high-dollar ones!
Jean JacketJewel Collar Sweater | White Jeans | Polka Dot Scarf (similar)
Booties | Watch | Bag (similar)
Jean Jacket White Tee | Patterned Shorts | Pom Pom Scarf (similar)
Striped Bag | Bag Charm (it’s almost time to bring that baby back out!)

Here’s a few more Looks-for-Less to consider, some of which I already have…
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Floral Shorts // High  |  Low
Floral Shift Dress // High  |  Low
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Striped Pullover Top // High  |  Low
Plaid Shirt // High  |  Low

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Cord Necklace // High  |  Low
Crystal Statement Necklace // High  |  Low

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Mirrored Aviators // High  |  Low
Leather Tote // High  |  Low
Now granted the quality isn’t always going to be comparable on the Low items, but I’ve had many of them for years, and they’ve held up great. Plus, I’m much more forgiving when a $25 jacket wears out than a $100 one. And I always scratch and lose my sunglasses…so better a $12 pair than $170! Besides, I’m usually ready for new styles after a few years, and don’t necessarily want everything in my closet to last a decade! #fickle
Update: I just noticed Old Navy has 30% off your entire order, today only, no code necessary! That makes the Low, even Lower! #howlowcanyougo
What’s your favorite Look-for-Less? Have you seen any other good ones? Happy Hump Day, lovebugs!

I tracked down the khaki versrion of the field jacket. Really loved the color and the open collar at the top. Did not love the cinch at the bottom or the way the hem rose up in back … not level from front to back. So I regretfully put it back. I'm trying to only buy the things that make be feel totally fabulous.
