Hello, hello, friends! We wrapped yesterday and have another Gibson x Hi Sugarplum photoshoot in the books! Can you believe this is our eighth Collection!? Like, what?! The pieces are absolutely divine, and not only can I not wait to share them, but I can’t wait to wear them! Hurry up, spring!
Today is a fun post for my decor-loving friends out there, because we have made serious progress on The Sugar Shack! As you recall, we closed on our little family lake house on Christmas Eve Eve, then spent a month or so hammering out the punch list.
Now that most of that is complete, it’s time to start the fun stuff… decorating!! My goal was to make it just livable and comfortable enough for our parents to start using right away, then take our time with all the details.
And things are moving right along. Here’s the latest on our darling Sugar Shack…

Once it’s a little warmer, we’ll start the landscaping and front porch. The goal is to stick with native plants that require very little water and maintenance. I’m open to suggestions!

I think the kitchen is my favorite space in the house. It’s the backsplash for me! I’ve always wanted an open kitchen with a big island… I’m envisioning mornings with these stools full of kids, and me flipping pancakes.

I couldn’t resist having a little fun with the laundry room, so we installed a colorful tile and accented the window wall with a dark cabinet. The cabinets on the left are stair-stepped, so I kept them white to blend in with the walls.
Sugarplum Tip: Double-check the building plans to be sure they accommodate enough space for appliances. Our full-size washer/dryer actually overlaps part of the sink and the left cabinet, so had we caught that before framing, we would simply slide the window and sink to the right.

I shared the bedroom design boards HERE, and I love how these rooms are coming together! Many of the pieces are on backorder, so our mattress is on the floor for now.

Now that the weather is warming up, I’m anxious to get some patio furniture so we can be outside. I’ve got my eye on this set and this swing. I just need to double check the dimensions.

The dock is complete, and will be a fun place to hang out in the summer. Little Miss has already been fishing several times. We’ll likely add lights to some of the steps for more safety at night.
I’ve got some fun ideas for decorating it, too!

We weren’t able to see it in person, but how gorgeous is The Sugar Shack blanketed by snow!? I love the dusting of snow on the garage doors. Good thing we didn’t start the landscaping yet, right?!

I’m still pinching myself, I just can’t believe she’s ours! Do you like seeing these regular updates, or would you rather I wait until it’s done? Well, that could be a few years the way I work, ha!
PS. I started a Sugar Shack list in my Amazon Shop, with all the house essentials we’ve added so far. You can find that HERE.

Lake House Updates, Vol. 2
Lake House Updates, Vol. 1
We’re Building a Lake House!
Cassie, it’s beautiful! So many great memories will be made here! I noticed the kitchen has all drawers for lowers- was that personal preference or the new standard?
Hi Jodi!!! It was a personal preference… drawers hold so much more, and I wanted the back wall to be a statement/focal point with all tile! xo, C
Cassie, your lake house is beautiful! I hope you enjoy making years of memories there.
Do you have a source for your wine frig?
Thanks so much, Denise! And no I’m sorry but I don’t have links for any of the appliances… the builder handled all of that! xo, C
I have loved following your updates on The Sugar Shack! We are in the process of building a lake cabin that will hopefully be ready in early May. I am stealing lots of your great ideas!
Can’t wait to see the finished project. I know that your family is going to make lots of wonderful memories there!
“Lake Cabin” sounds much dreamier than lake house, ha!!! Sounds fantastic!! xo, C
Love everything about it! The perfect lake house-so bright and happy!!❤️ Enjoy following all the updates…keep them coming!
So thrilled you’re enjoying the updates, I’ll keep ’em coming! xo, C
Man, Ms. Cassie! What have -you- been up to?!!
We (the royal we, ha,ha!) love to see updates!
I don’t see the lower laundry room cabinet an issue, really. You just have to organize it so you can reach back there for seldom used stuff. : ) Good place to hide stuff, ha,ha.
I will be back w/plant ideas, yes! Two good sources tho, are your neighbors know what works/what doesn’t, and the local nurseries will know.
Love all this, thanks!!!
So smart, Sandy!!!! xo, C
Love it – everything looks so great! I love the little wine bar nook!
I maintain that a wine bar nook at the lake house was a necessity!! Xo, C
Love seeing these updates! How many stems in your kitchen vase…trying to decide on one set or two? Thanks for sharing!
Hi Lorie! I would get two packs of the stems… it does depend on what vase you’re using, but you don’t want it to look sparse! xo, C
I’d rather see it as it goes along. It’s a great learning process. Rooms aren’t put together in a day … except on TV shows.
Do you have a Pinterest board of ideas that caught your interest? That would be fun to look at and compare to what actually winds up in your lake house.
Duly noted, Patricia!! And I don’t have a dedicated lake house Pin board… but I regularly Pin items to my boards here: https://www.pinterest.com/hisugarplum/
xo, Cassie
Absolutely Wonderful!!!
Quick note about the guest room bed frame…. we own two (in my kids’ rooms) and have had MANY stubbed toes. For us, somehow they are a toe magnet. After time, it happens less, but just a warning for the little piggies! I have considered wrapping them somehow, as ours have a simple, straight lined “dust ruffle” cover, but have yet to do that.
Ahhh… good to know!! Thank you for the heads up! xo, C
Well, I helped my 14 year old make her bed last night. She mentioned the toe thing again. ; )
haha, oh no!! Stubbed toes are the worst, too!
Love the layout of the house! Would you mind sharing how many square feet it has? Does your builder sell the houseplans? So sorry for all the questions but I would love to just move your house to my land….including how you are decorating it! hahaha
Hi Donna! It’s about 2,300 square feet! I don’t believe the builder sells plans, but it’s CR Thurman Homes if you want to check! xo, C
What a gorgeous home! I love these regular updates. Since we can’t travel far, it’s fun to live vicariously through you and the Sugar Shack!
Thanks so much, Lana! We’re so excited to get it all put together! xo, C
Curious, did you hard plumb your coffee maker?
Hi there! It’s a Keurig machine that plugs into the wall, and we just fill the water reservoir at the sink! xo. C
This is just so lovely!! Quick question…are there two bedrooms downstairs? Trying to get the layout set in my head. I love the covered porch area with the fireplace and painted ceiling. Perfect area for storm watching with a good book!!!
Yes! It’s one and half stories…so a full downstairs of 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, dining, living and kitchen. The upstairs is half the width of the downstairs (hence how the ceilings are so tall in the living area)…and consists of 2 beds/baths directly across from each other. There’s also a small den area upstairs. You can see the ‘half floor’ from the exterior view of the front of the house. I hope that helps, and makes sense, ha! xo. C
It’s fabulous. I see that you have a curbless shower. We are just starting a bathroom renovation and I am thinking of doing a curbless shower but wondering if there is clearance for a bathmat if you open the door out.
It’s best for pushing the door in, rather than out. If we pull the door out, we have to slide the rug over.
So beautiful. You have such a flair for decorating. Your living room (and blue sofa) from your other home are my all-time favorite. Where is this sofa from?
Thank you,
Kim 🙂
Thank you so much, Kim! This sofa is sourced via A Well Dressed Home! It’s a beautiful soft blue! xo. C
It is such a cool house. I love each and every update. We bought our lake house five years ago, and I still get giddy each time we get to go there. It is truly a treasure for my family.
I love hearing that, Kim!!! I’m so excited for the years to come!
Sooo gorgeous and soooo jealous! Everything looks lovely. I could see a sleeping porch bed on the back patio, that is only my list for my beach house of my dreams.
Oh yes, I’d love a porch swing of some kind!!!
What brand is that stove and frig?
The appliance package was included in the house and selected by the builder…the fridge is Bosch and the stove/range is Bertazzoni
