In My 50s…What’s Actually Working for Me

Hi friends 💛

I recently shared a post on Instagram about being in my 50s (see it HERE) and the response was overwhelming — in the best way. The messages, the comments, the “saaaaame!” replies… clearly this season of life is resonating with a lot of us.

Whether you saw that post or not, I wanted to bring the conversation here and expand on it a bit.

There was a stretch where I didn’t quite feel like myself — tired, foggy, a little off in my own skin. Not dramatic. Not crisis-level. Just not me. And pretending nothing was changing didn’t work. White-knuckling through it didn’t either.

So instead of fighting this chapter, I started supporting it. I found a functional doctor educated on women’s health and invested in helping me balance mine. I started listening to every single wellness doctor and implemented strength training in my regular routine. I took a look at everything I was putting in and on my body with new eyes…because while it may have worked before, it certainly wasn’t working any longer.

Today I’m sharing what’s genuinely helping me look and feel my best in my 50s — from strength training and hormone support to the jeans, matching sets, and beauty favorites that make everyday life feel a little easier and a lot more confident.

It’s not about turning back time. It’s about feeling strong, clear, and like myself again. I’m not there yet, but I’m feeling more me than I have in years!

This chapter doesn’t look like my 30s or 40s — and I’m learning that it’s not supposed to.

What’s working now is different: more intention, more strength, more support (and yes, better skincare and higher-rise denim definitely help 😉).

If you’re in this season too, I hope this feels encouraging. You’re not behind. You’re not doing it wrong. Your body isn’t betraying you — it’s evolving. And we get to evolve with it. I read something the other day that in Japan they call menopause ‘Konenki‘, which means the ‘renewal years.‘ Women are celebrated for entering their wise phase, and symptoms are simply a sign of the transition.

So look out world, I’m entering my Wise Era, and you know what?! I’m here for it!

I’d love to hear what’s working for you in this chapter. We’re all figuring it out together — and there’s something really comforting about that. 💛

Oh, I red flagged this post! The comments should be pouring in. Hate looking back ,but pre/menopause could be tough, never knowing if I’d wake up feeling ok, good/bad/or ugly! Then still having to go to work. Felt 100% better, more energetic than ever once it all passed. : ) Love your tips, and Mr. SP w/a suntan! xoxo.

I’m just at the beginning of adapting to the changes my mind and body are going through. So far, here’s what is working for me:

Making quality sleep a priority. Since I do not wish to use any form of medication, I’m trying other options. Melatonin gave me weird dreams and left me feeling wonky. Currently I’m trying a little tart cherry juice before bedtime. This seems to be working so far. *hopeful grin*

Trying to be better about hydration. I have a very healthy diet, and supplement with collagen, creatine, and vitamin D, but I am terrible about drinking water. I got these “True Lemon” packets to add for some flavor. Hoping that helps.

Intentional strength training in addition to my normal fitness activities. Been doing assisted pull ups at the fitness center! *strong like bull* LOL!!!

Following my dermatologist’s skin care recommendations, since I have very sensitive skin. This includes Jane Iredale makeup, which gives me a very natural look. Once I run out of my current body lotion, I want to try the Kiehl’s Crème de Corps lotion you recommended. My skin needs extra love these days.

Blending the grays. Rather than coloring my hair, I’m using strategically placed lowlights (not highlights, I’m a brunette) to blend my color more naturally. Unless I tell people, no one even can tell I do any color whatsoever. #silverfoxette

Dialing out the unnecessary. Letting go of the burdensome. Slowing down. Less running around like a headless chicken and more self-care time. Enjoying the daily blessings of life.

I like that word Konenki. I’m learning to embrace my wise years. So I’ll be growing through this, right with you!

PS: that pink gingham looks gorgeous on you!

Haha — I just do short, quick jumps barefoot…supposedly it kickstarts your lymphatic system, wakes up your muscles, etc. Plus, the impact on ground is good for bone density, and it strengthens core and leg muscles. It’s funny how quickly I became hooked on doing it! I can literally feel the puffiness draining from my eyes as I jump now!
