Ramblings

Cheers to Friday, friends and the fun weekend ahead! I finally got my act together and added some pumpkins and a few paper spiders to the porch, and the kids have their costumes all sorted out! But I don’t dare buy the candy until Halloween morning, my willpower is not strong enough to have it in the house all weekend! Do you buy your candy early, or wait?

Today it’s time for a big ole brain dump of what’s been rambling around my head, and life lately! And it’s kind of a doozy…I really should try to do these posts more often!!

ONE // With the new season, comes tons of new arrivals…but even more exciting, is the return of favorites from year’s past! I was excited to see so many of my closet staples back-in-stock…starting with this soft turtleneck tunic! It’s such a fave, I went to town styling it in this One Outfit | Three Ways post. Update: It’s now 40% off!! The leggings are the hands-down best I’ve ever tried…super thick and opaque, with a wide, comfy waistband that doesn’t roll or fall down.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS in both.

There’s no question I’m a military jacket junkie, they go with absolutely everything! I’ve had this vest for ages, in fact I wore it in this oooooold Date Night Style post, and it’s finally back! Maybe vests took a break, but I never stopped wearing it!

I never tire of the sporty vibe or super-soft cotton of this tee, and I’ve worn it all over. Literally from Horseshoe Bend to St. Petersburg, Russia! It’s back in a whole slew of new color combos.

This plaid infinity scarf from last year’s NYC in 36 Hours post was a big reader-favorite, but of course sold out in a hot second. Which is to be expected when it’s the perfect weight and size, and under $25! So happy to see it back!

I get a lot of questions about this pink ruffle sweater from this Plum Booties | Two Ways post, and while my exact one is no longer available, I did find a really good duplicate!

This great cashmere crewneck sweater (under $100!) from another One Outfit | Three Ways post is back in a ton of great Fall colors!

And lastly, this cowlneck tunic sweater (from last year’s holiday post) is back, and perfect for leggings!

TWO // Okay, now that Summer is over, my reading has slowed way down, and I want to get back to it! (A girl needs something to do on Football Sunday, #amiright). The last book I read was The Woman in Cabin 10, and wowza it was good and creepy. Do tell…what have you read and loved lately?!

THREE // I have a big, fancy-pants camera (this one), but I find myself using my iPhone more and more exclusively! In fact, this post and this post were taken entirely with my phone! Did you know Apple has tons of short how-to videos for everything from how to shoot a great portrait, to how to shoot action. Even if you aren’t an Apple user, the (free) videos are super helpful.

FOUR // Our weekend in Colorado was amazing, but much too short! We got a taste of both Fall and Winter weather, too, so I was grateful I’d brought several options for all the outdoor adventures.

FIVE // Now that our kids are older, we don’t do much in the Halloween decorating and crafting department, but I know many of you have excited young ones. You can find some of my favorite projects like Skull Bookends and Treat Boxes, and decor around the home, in this roundup post.

SIX // I live for Hunted Interior makeovers, and am always amazed by Kristin’s insane talent! Since I’ve known her, this little room has been a Dining Room, her daughter’s bedroom, and now a knock-out library!! You don’t to miss it and all the amazing details. She’s about to build an add-on to her home, and I think I’m more excited than her!

SEVEN // Have you heard of dermaplaning? It’s the process of scraping away the dead skin cells and peach fuzz from your face, leaving your skin brighter and smoother. Removing the peach fuzz is beneficial because it traps dirt and oil, giving your skin a duller appearance, and leading to more break-outs. Without the fuzz, our skincare products are more easily absorbed, and makeup applies more evenly. According to everything I’ve read, anyway!

I was anxious to try it for myself, but it seemed kind of silly to pay someone to run a small blade over my face. So I turned to Amazon, and found these little babies! Disclaimer: I am not an aesthetician, nor do I have any authority in this matter.

I can only speak to my own experience, and I’m hooked! My face is so much smoother and brighter, and my makeup has never looked better! I’ve been doing it about twice a week for several weeks, and so far, I don’t have any weird hair re-growth, and definitely no stubble! I will say, be careful around your brows, because these blades are sharp. #oops

EIGHT // I can hardly believe it, but it’s almost the holiday season, and family photos are right around the corner! We’ve got ours scheduled for next month, but I haven’t started outfit planning yet. I did find this skirt, and seriously might plan the entire family around it! I shared some of my tips for dressing the family in this post.

NINE // We had our first road-trip to visit a college campus (can you believe we’re already at this stage?!), and spent a night in Eureka Spring, Arkansas. It’s the cutest, quirkiest little town we’ve visited in awhile…full of winding streets, gorgeous countryside, and kookie shops. The entire town is on the National Historic Register!

TEN // Finally, several pieces I’ve featured lately are now on sale…including this fun puffer vest. It’s on sale for $25, plus an additional 20% off! I’m styling it for a fun post next week, so you might want to grab it!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Striped Swing Dress | Camo Vest | Sandals

I’m officially hooked on this twill jacket (I have it in both green and camo), and now it’s an extra 20% off with code SWEET.

Fit Tip: I size up to a small.

This sweater vest is re-stocked and on sale for $40.

And I know you’re probably sick of hearing me rave about this peacoat, but they keep adding new colors! And it’s still under $40!

Fit Tip: I size up one to a small.

And finally, I’ve had this faux-leather moto jacket for years, and could not love it more. Problem is, every time I wear it, this shade of caramel is sold out…leading to unhappy Sugarplum readers! So obviously I’m so excited to tell you that not only is this color BACK, but it’s on sale!!! The color is perfect since it pairs so well with blacks and browns, and every color in between. It will sell out fast, but don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Fit Tip: I sized up to a small (see the full outfit post here)

Also, I’ve been on the hunt for some longer tunics to wear with leggings (cover the lady bits, ladies!), and this one and this one caught my eye, plus they’re on sale! What’s rambling through your head these days? I’d love to hear what’s going on in your world! Happy weekend, lovebugs!

P.S. I saw your instastory the other day about hair extensions. Have you ever thought of doing long hair extensions just for the fun of it? I think you would look beautiful!

I have!! But it would require a full head of them, and A) I’m cheap, and B) I’m not sure I’d like how that feels!!! I’ve been trying to grow my own hair out for YEARS and it’s not budging!!

Your extensions look great, I never would have known! I recently had my third child, and after losing a lot of hair after the first two pregnancies, I decided to supplement with collagen this time around. I’ve been putting a scoop of marine collagen ( I use the Vital Proteins brand) in my morning tea every day for about a year. It has no impact on taste or texture of the drink, and my skin, hair, and nails have never looked better! Definitely worth a shot if you’re still trying to grow out your own hair.

  11. OMG- this is one jam packed post! James picked out M&M’s for our Halloween candy this year, and it’s a good thing, because I can easily resist those! The chocolate covered toffee from Trader Joe’s – not so much!

If you have not already, you must read Louise Penny’s Inspector Armand Gamache series! Set in Montreal and a small town near the Vermont border, her writing is superb. You really get to care about her characters. I think you read Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale? If not, you need to read that and her Winter Garden.

  16. LOVE your faux leather moto jacket! Such a great way to style it too! I can hardly believe it’s already time to start thinking about Christmas photos! The one you shared is great. We’re expecting a new addition in the next couple of weeks and have our photographer on standby for the last week in November/early December for a few quick family snaps to put on a card. Bring on the holidays!

  17. If you liked The Girl in Cabin 10, you’ll really like Ruth Ware’s third book out called “The Lying Game”. Could not put it down. I have three small boys and a full time career and read it in 3 days.

I loved “Born a Crime” by Trevor Noah (from the daily show) – I think it is one of the best books I’ve read this year! It is a funny (yet serious too) look at his childhood in South Africa during Apartheid.
