Happy Monday, friends, and welcome back to a new week! I hope you had a wonderful weekend and your spring fever isn’t derailing your productivity too much, ha! I know I’m ready for long days of sunshine. And maybe hot water. (Yep, we still have no hot water except in one bathroom!)
Y’all asked for all the Lake house updates and posts, so today I’m sharing the basic essentials we’ve used in The Sugar Shack kitchen and bathrooms. Obviously outfitting a second house is no inexpensive task, so we’ve stuck with the basics first and looked for the best budget buys.
Our main home is an accumulation of everything we’ve gathered over the last 25 years together… from family hand-me-downs and college-life leftovers, to pieces we bought together. The Lake house gives us the chance to start fresh and mindfully choose each and every little thing we bring in. My goal is to have no superfluous items!
I found pieces that didn’t break the bank, but are also incredible quality to last for years! Let’s start with the Kitchen…
Backsplash Tile | Dishes | Bowls | Toaster | Sconces
Cutting Board | Dishes | Bowls
Backsplash Tile | Knife Block | Cutting Board | Vase | Stems
All great basics, like plates, bowls and flatware…but my hands-down favorite find are the glasses! I’m obsessed with the shape and size, plus they stack for easier storage. They are seriously so chic and could easily pass for high-end glassware. The mugs are darling too, and the large size I love for coffee.
I also love the silicone utensil set, the light khaki color looks good sitting out, too.
one. Paper Towel Holder // two. Soap Dispensers Set
three. Utensil Set // four. Water Glasses
five. Coffee Mugs // six. Dishes Set
seven. Flatware Set // eight. Knife Block
nine. Colorful Bowl Set // ten. Drawer Organizer
Moving on to the bathrooms, we stuck with the same great basics we love at home, too. (You can find the design boards and sources HERE.) I love these little baskets for all sorts of uses, but they’re great for holding extra paper, and they look cute on the back of the toilet.
Shower Curtain | Drawer Pulls | Cabinet Pulls | Basket | Towel Hooks | Floor Tile: AUC 1″ Penny Round 3060 BRPÂ | Cabinet Color: SW ‘Pure White‘ | Countertops: White Quartz
Rectangular Basket | Waste Basket | Toilet Roll Holder | Floor Tile: AUC 1″ Penny Round 3060 BRP | Cabinet Color: SW ‘Pure White‘
We used these towels throughout the house, and are really happy with the softness and quality (but they don’t take forever to dry!). The towel hooks will hopefully encourage actual hanging, and add some warmth to the rooms.
one. Apothecary Jars // two. Wooden Towel Rack
three. Faux Fern // four. Soap Dispenser
five. Bath Towel Set // six. Waste Basket
seven. Coordinating Hardware Set // eight. Bath Mat
nine. Small Basket
As for the beds (we have seven in this house, including the bunks!), we used the same mattresses, sheets, and pads throughout, and could not be happier!! (See the bedroom design boards and sources HERE.)
Mattress | Bed Frame | Lamps | Striped Rug
Duvet Cover | Duvet Insert | Sheet Set | Mattress | Bed Frame | Headboard | Indigo Pillow Covers | Nightstands | Lamps | Striped Rug
I shared these bed essentials already, but thought it might be helpful to have them all in a single post for your easy reference. I highly recommend dressing your bed in any of these!!
one. Duvet Cover & Shams // two. Duvet Insert
three. Euro Sham + Insert // four. Throw Pillow Inserts
five. Sleeping Pillows // six. Hybrid Mattress in a Box
seven. Mattress Topper (also this one) // eight. Bed Frame
nine. Favorite Sheets // ten. Bed Skirt
Okay, that’s it for essentials. I’m sure the list will grow as we spend more time here… but we’ll continue to thoughtfully add new things only as we need them. Of course I’ve already ordered the egg cooker, because I can’t live without it! (See all my essential kitchen gadgets HERE.)
Do you have kitchen, bath, or bed essentials we should know about?
PS. I started a Sugar Shack list in my Amazon Shop, with all the house essentials we’ve added so far. You can find that HERE.

We’re Building a Lake House!
Looks absolutely beautiful and I love the color scheme you’ve chosen! many new memories will be made … so fun!
Thanks so much, Karen! We can’t wait for the summer now! xo, C
Love it all and have purchased most of your choices for our new beach house here in Va. They have been perfect. I am struggling with window/door coverings for 6 sets of sliding doors. We need blackout and would prefer something that does not have to be dry-cleaned. Each bedroom has it’s own set of sliding doors. Any suggestions would be much appreciated…and enjoy your beautiful new home.
So happy to hear that! I don’t have any specific drapes links for the lake house yet, but my go-to has always been JCPenney for blackout curtains! xo, C

We love all of this. So easy on the eyes.
Still hearing about the disaster in TX, via news, radio, internet. Heartbreaking damage and Texans left out in the cold. Cannot imagine being so cold like this, in this century. Heard from a contractor that plumbing parts for TX are very hard to come by because of this.
Hang tough, Texans!
Thank you, Sandy! We still only have hot water in one bathroom, but have fared better than so many others. It’s a truly awful situation! xo, C
I recently bought the mattress topper of wonder. Tips for washing it? Does it get lumpy at all?
Hi Jayne! The care instructions say machine-washable and then tumble dry low, which is what we do! No problems! xo, C
It’s BEAUTIFUL, congratulations! The Linenspa mattress is awesome, thanks so much! Two of my little kiddos needed a new mattress and we bought them on your rec. 💕
Thanks so much, Jill! We have been impressed with those mattresses, too! xo, C
Your kitchen is simply wonderful, and I love how classy the open shelving is! I just moved into a new home, and am getting the cabinets redone by a local cabinet refinisher. I’m debating on doing open shelving on one side of the wall, but am worried about the dust. Have you found that to be an issue with your kitchen or do you have any tips on keeping open shelves clean?
Hi Sarah! We haven’t been in the house long enough to think about dust, ha! So far, so good! Maybe once we are there more in the summer, I’ll have an update! xo, c
Thank you for giving us a peak into your vacation home and sharing your essentials. We are building one as well. It is SO expensive trying to fill it with just the basic necessities. I’ve been scouring HomeGoods, TJ Maxx & Marshalls for months trying to find some good deals.
Yes it definitely takes a lot of work!!! We just wanted to get the basics set up so family could start using it. I’m excited to more fully decorate with intentional pieces down the road! xo, C
So many great pieces here! We have a small condo in Mammoth, CA, and it was fun to overhaul it with similar basics to what you have here, but in a mountainy-outdoorsy style (lots of navy and dark green with orange accents). Blessings on the wonderful memories you will make with friends and family for years to come!
Thanks so much, Lisa! Your color scheme sounds perfect for a little mountain escape!! xo, C
Hi, where did you buy the brass quarter trim for the mirrors? Everything you chose is so fun, clean and amazing! Love it!
Thanks so much, Nicole. Im not sure where our contractor sourced it, but I think you can buy long strips of it online.
