Hi Sugarplum!

Port of Call | Berlin, Germany

berlin germany

Welcome back, friends! Our kids made it safely home from camp…exhausted, full of joy, and lots of stories! We had some great family time this weekend, along with a lot of grungy laundry, and then headed to the beach yesterday! It will be just the kids and me for a bit, then Mr. SP will join us (along with one of our favorite families) next week.

I’m looking forward to some one-on-one time with them before the crazy pace of school resumes. I’ll be posting snaps over on Instagram and Facebook, so follow me there if you like palm trees and blue water.

Today I’m excited to share the final stop from our Scandinavian Trip with Princess Cruises….the port of Warnemunde, about 165-miles from Berlin.

The Regal Princess docked early, and we boarded the train (we lucked out with the cutest pink train car) for the three-hour trip to Berlin. Which equated to 6-hours of train time, and 6-hours of city exploration. We knew it was going to be a long day, but just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see the historical city.

If I were to do it again, I’d save Berlin for another time, and enjoy a slower-paced day in nearby Rostock. My list of must-see sites in Berlin was so long that we left feeling like we hadn’t even scratched the surface. Obviously the country as a whole requires a trip all its own.

We spent the first few hours scurrying from historical marker to marker…then finally gave in and boarded a double-decker bus that circled the city, and just took in what we could. Even still, we managed to see many of the biggest highlights…the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Holocaust Memorial, plus enjoy a great lunch at the cutest cafe, House of Small Wonder.

Though the city is bustling, it’s impossible not to feel the deep sadness once rooted here.

Love all of the photos, but especially the one of the store filled with green plants. Looks like the best place to walk through!

From just a few pictures I can see why you want to spend more time there. Even just from looking at a picture I can imagine what sad times were once happening.

I hope you aren’t at AMI…Emily is really dumping on us this week. If you are, stay dry and out of the water. The rip currents are awful.

My daughter and I spent several days in Berlin last summer. You are correct, you need to go back and spend more time there. Take a train out of the city for a day to see even more great sites. So much history.

I have been retired for 10 years, but before that I worked for a DoD contractor and had the privilege of doing business in Berlin and a few other cities in Germany. It was fascinating to be in the middle of so much history, albeit sad history; I was actually in Frankfort, Germany when the wall came down. To this day, I am totally obsessed with reading historical novels about WWII. Plus my Dad was in the Army, stationed in France, during the war.

It warms my heart for your generation to want to visit places like Berlin so we will never forget all the tragedies that have occurred, and honor those who gave so much for our freedom! Fabulous photos, as usual!

Beautiful pictures as always! I have never bee to Berlin but would love to go for sure. I have been on two Princess Cruise now, one to Europe last summer and one to Greece earlier this month and I understand how you feel about deciding what to see and where to go in with the time given on land. Its tough especially when you want to see so many things in one trip but also want to make sure to get some r and r. It looks like you had a great time, have a great Monday!

Absolutely beautiful photos and my curiosity has been piqued. I have a question about the type of cruise you took was it with just port excursions or the more in-depth land and sea (cruisetour) with hotel package? Any strong opinions on either option?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

I was in Berlin last year for about 4 days. You could spend a week there easily. It’s a fascinating city; quite small but a full fledged city with so much history. Much of the history is quite modern compared to other European cities with their history happening hundreds of years ago.
Definitely worth another trip. Maybe a river cruise next time?

These pics are unbelievable. The colors are just gorgeous. And we love Princess cruise lines also.
