Hey guys, happy Tuesday! I hope your week is off to a great start. Yesterday I shared our plans for updating the upstairs Bonus Room, aka the kid’s hangout… and today I’m excited to share this quick and easy makeover!
Thanks to Prime shipping, everything arrived so fast, and the room went from blah to bam in just a few days. Plus, I didn’t spend a fortune!
Lamps | Succulent Planter | His Sweatshirt (on sale!)
Let me give you a little backstory first… we actually gave this room a makeover several years ago (see that HERE), but over time, things got moved around. The giant IKEA map and keyboard moved to Mr. College Guy’s room, the benches to the patio, and the rug encountered a few too many dog ‘visits.’
And after 15 years of wear-and-tear, the IKEA sectional was on its last leg, too (see its original home HERE).
So when we gave the downstairs Family Room a makeover last year (see that HERE), we moved the older sectional sofa upstairs. Of course it was a completely different size, so that meant the console table we’d DIYed (see that HERE) no longer fit either.
The room sat half-empty until the pandemic and news of online classes hit. I wanted the kids to be able to use the room quickly, so I turned to the best online source I know right now… Amazon! It took some digging and I read a ton of reviews, but I found everything I needed to make this a stylish, comfortable space in just a few days. #IheartPrime
Sofa | Coffee Table | Rug | Lamps | Succulent Planter | Embroidered Pillows | Indigo Pillows | Planter | Mini Plant
I chose this rug for the flat weave and soft texture, and the 8-foot square option is perfect for our 12×15-foot room. The colors are neutral and allow us to mix up pillows and more.
I wanted a round coffee table to break up the squareness of the sectional and rug, and this one is a great smaller size. It’s lightweight with a faux-marble laminate top, but still sturdy enough to prop your feet. It’s so chic, you’d never know it’s super affordable!
Coffee Table | Rug | Planter
The ceramic lamps are an Amazon find, too… and the streamlined shape perfect for the narrow space behind the sofa. They are incredible quality and style!
The photo is actually one from our trip to Cinque Terre we had printed large-scale at Staples and popped in an inexpensive IKEA frame. (More details on the IKEA frame hack HERE!)
Coffee Table | Rug | Lamps
Similar Pouf | Rug | Faux Plant | Sneakers
The pillows are a mix of those we already had, and a few new ones I found on Amazon, too.
Coffee Table | Mini Faux Plant | Planter | Rubiks Cube
We used two of these console tables aligned end-to-end for lamps and other things behind the sofa. The quality of these is definitely lacking, but the sofa provides extra stability, and the size and color was right for the space and what we needed. I wouldn’t recommend them as a stand-alone piece.

Similar Pouf | Rug | Sneakers
I grabbed a few other accessories from Amazon, like the planters, faux succulents, basket and these super-cute wood beads. Would you believe they’re under $15!?
The console table and art are pieces left over from the downstairs makeover.
Blanket Ladder | Leopard Throw
And because I’m having all the feels lately… here’s a peek at how the occupants of this room have changed!
Can you believe the change… of both the people and the room!?! And yes, that’s a quarantine buzz done by Little Miss! It was a quick and easy makeover, and I’m really impressed with all the things we found.
The kids use this space every day for homework, movies, video games, and more. And I’ve discovered it’s a great sunny spot for curling up with a book, too (it’s right outside my office). Honestly, without this space I don’t know if either of them would ever leave their rooms! Are your kids like that?
Are you working on any house projects or design updates right now? This room is the perfect example that great style isn’t determined solely on the price.
Simply marvelous! I really enjoy before and after photos of rooms with makeovers. These cute siblings are going to enjoy their new surroundings and bond in a very special, memorable way.
I’m just not surprised one bit it’s perfect!!
Thanks so much, friend!! xo. C
Ok, I’m confused!!!! Yesterday’s preview you showed a sofa from Amazon and today in the actual room reveal its a West Elm sofa? What ‘s up????
So sorry about the confusion! Yesterday’s post was the design board for visual purposes, and I wanted to give all affordable options on Prime! I did extensive research and that sofa was the highest rated, so it’s a great option. We’ve had our West Elm sofa for over 5 years and it’s still in good shape, so we just recycled it for our own space.
What’s the color of the west elm sofa? Thanks!
Hi Nicole, I’m so sorry but I am not sure! It’s pretty old. My best guess looking at their website is Frost Gray or Anchor Gray, and not sure of the fabric finish. I’m sorry, that isn’t very helpful, is it?! xo, C
I love the colors especially the pink, it really pops out. Nice job!
Thanks so much! xo. C
It looks great! How comfortable is the new sectional?
Hi Kristin! The sectional is our old one from the downstairs Family Room… I linked it in the post! It’s still great, we just got a new sofa downstairs back in the Fall. xo, Cassie
I love this!! Especially the coffee table! Could you give details on the Staples print? Did you order online? What settings did you choose? Is it photo paper? Would love to do this with photos from our travels!
Hi Carolyn! I actually wrote an entire post about this Ikea frame, linked below! All the info I have and remember is included! xo, Cassie

Wow! And luv the throwback pic at the end.
(The IKEA sofa lasted 15 years? W/kids and dogs?, ha,ha.)
I’m glad I could find the throwbacks in my archives! The IKEA couch was great, but it was definitely time for another one! xo, Cassie
I remember that make-over and was shocked when I went back and saw the original date!!! And then to see how young the kids looked! How does time go by so fast?!!
I loved it then, and I love it now! They are so different, but both so beautiful!
Thank you so much, Crystal! I kind of can’t believe it either! I’m just glad they posed for another photo! xo, Cassie
I love the way you shot it last time (the old picture) when you can really see the entire room and layout. I can’t stand the new blogger way to show only pinterest worthy snapshots so close up you can’t get a sense of exactly what the room looks like and how it has come together.
Hi Emily! I tried to include a photo (the third one in the post) showcasing the majority of the space. With the big window off to the right letting in light, it was hard to get a good “all-encompassing” shot! xo, Cassie
I am curious about the Amazon sofa and how/ where you used it. But I don’t see it in your room reveal. Please let me know. Thank you.
So sorry for the confusion, Candice! That sofa was just part of the design board to show the ‘look’ of the room I was going for. I didn’t actually use all the items in the collage, but rather, used it for inspiration. I did however, do extensive research on the sofa before selecting that one to share! It has incredible reviews.
Looks lovely. I am curious about the West Elm Henry sectional? Does it hold up well? Curious with kids and pets.
We’ve had this one for a little over five years, and considering the use, it’s held up great! It doesn’t stay connected as well on wood floors, but works great on this carpet.
Beautiful room as always. How do you like your Veja sneakers? I’ve been debating getting some but havent heard reviews from many people of how comfortable they are. Would appreciate your thoughts!
I love them!!! They are so cute with jeans, and I love the little lift. I did have to size down an entire size though.
Hi. Great makeover! Didn’t you have problems with marks from the big old map? In my house you can always see where there was hanging a picture.
Thanks Nicole! We didn’t have any issues with marks, but I’ve found Mr. Clean Magic Eraser sponges are great for walls, too!
Love it all! You do everything to perfection! Wish I had your eye! Thx for sharing! Which IKEA bookcases do you have? Are those the Billy one? Apologizes if I overlooked the reference /link.
Thanks so much, Kristy! This specific TV wall unit is a few years old and sold out, but the Hemnes piece on the Ikea site is very similar! I can’t link to it! xo, Cassie
Will you link to your ikea wall unit? I didn’t see it in the post.
Hi Kelly! This specific TV wall unit is a few years old and sold out, but the Hemnes piece on the Ikea site is very similar! I can’t link to it! xo, Cassie
Love the paint colors in your home. Is there a spot on your blog that they are listed?
Hi Melissa! The majority of them are listed in this recent blog post! xo, Cassie

How do you like the round table from Amazon? I was going to order it and then I read the reviews and they seem to be really mixed – some people loved it and others thought it seemed so cheap. What did you think?
We are really liking it! Haven’t had it in the space for too too long, but so far, very impressed! xo, Cassie
I just love this new space so much. Very cheerful and the pictures of your kids before and now are so sweet.
Hi, is this rug the white and gray option? thanks!
Yes, the grey/off white! xo, C
Have you been happy with the West Elm couch? I have been eying a couch from there, but concerned that they don’t allow any customer feedback on the website. Would love an honest option on quality and how it has held up to typical family use.
Hi Jill! the sofa is been pretty good, and has def taken a beating. The only negatives we’ve found is it has a hard time staying clicked in together, unless it’s on carpet (then the pieces stay better connected). Also, the back cushions lose their shape after extended use, but I’ve discovered I can just flip them around and refluff! If you grab one on sale, I think it’s a good deal for the quality! Hope that helps!
