The Bonus Room Makeover

A giant welcome to new friends visiting from the darling and talented Claire Brody! Today, I’m participating in the Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours, Work & Play edition, hosted by Lindsay of White Buffalo Styling, Co. I’m so honored to be included in such an awesome group of bloggers (see the full list at the end of the post), and thrilled to share a new space with ya’ll today…our re-vamped Bonus Room!

Hi Sugarplum | Gameroom Makeover

Earlier this year, I told you about one of my coolest opportunities to date…working and filming with the Ikea Home Tour Squad! (See the full post and video here.) For three days, we worked tirelessly to breathe some life in to our upstairs Bonus Room. When we were done, we had a great space for our family to hang and play in…and revealing it to the kids was one of the best parts!

There’s no question it was an amazing transformation (see the Befores here), but by swapping out the lamps and pillows, and adding more color, it feels more like ‘us’ now.

Hi Sugarplum | Gameroom Makeover

This space really fits the true definition of a Bonus Room…it’s the upstairs landing zone between the kids rooms, and where they lounge, watch movies, play video games, play music, create, and spend time with friends. It’s also the place for our family game nights and dance parties. That’s a lot of function to squeeze out of one room!

My office (that houses the craft closet of my dreams) is through that door, but often times I work from the sofa to be closer to the kids. And let’s be honest, to play referee!

Even though Mr. SP is no longer a professional musician, his love of creating music is still strong. Carving out a permanent music area allows him and the kids to play together anytime they want. #kumbaya

I’m completely smitten with these pillows (I first shared them with you in this post), and can’t believe what a huge impact they made on the room! They are impeccably made from amazing and vibrant fabrics, and shipped really quickly! I’ve already ordered a few more to fill in the large sectional sofa.

And you know I’ve been clipping my elephant charm tassel to bags for years, but now I’m obsessed with using them in home decor. You may remember them from our Christmas Home Tour, and apparently I’m compelled to clip them on every lamp in the house! (See it in our One Room Challenge Bedroom Reveal and One Console | Three Ways posts.)

Does your family play Bop It? It’s so fun, and completely maddening!

This picture is one of my favorite things in the room…it’s from this fun shoot, and I used this method to blow it up and frame.

My son is trying to snag this huge map for his room, so we’ll see where it ends up! I might add cork to the back, and pin flags or mini-pics for each of the places we’ve traveled (see them here).

Hi Sugarplum | Gameroom Makeover

The coffee table is actually two benches pushed together…sturdy enough for feet and drinks (why do kids not understand the concept of coasters?!?!), and extra seating when needed. #geniusideaIkeapeeps

How about some memory lane…here’s the room before we moved in (read that story here)

Then after painting the walls SW ‘Repose Gray’ and moving some existing furniture in….

And after Ikea came and worked some magic with a combination of their products and stuff we already owned.

And finally now…a space we all love and can relax and enjoy!

My goal was to create a laid-back space the kids would enjoy, but also have it fit with the rest of the house and our design style. It’s been a fun progression, and I’m thrilled with how the room turned out! Now it’s time to turn our attention to the other side of the room…but we’ll get to that later!

Next stop on the Work & Play tour is Heather at Decor Fix! She’s up tomorrow, but be sure to check out all these talented gals for more inspiration…and thanks again to Lindsay for inviting me to join in!

It looked great when Ikea left, but after you've put your personal touches on the space it's PERFECT! The pillows you added seem like the perfect fit for your family. And I love that there's a little something for everyone in the space.

  21. I LOVE this room – great job! My favorite is that map – anything with old wood totally blows my skirt up. Quick (and maybe silly) question – is it really wood or a graphic on a canvas?

    Posted 4.21.16 Reply
    • Thank you! The map is a canvas with a wood frame. xo

I love the tweaks you've made to make the room more "your family". It looks great! I'm a sucker for indigo pillows anytime so I'll have to check your sources. Also for family and their coaster blindness, polyurethane table tops and water rings are a thing of the past.

  29. Such a cool space Cassie! The room definitely feels more like you after you injected those fun pops of color! I still cannot get over how much your kiddos have grown since I first met them, they seemed like babies then compared to now!
