Hi Sugarplum!

Friday Fashion

January 16, 2015

Hey there, friends, and happy Friday! Thank you so much for all your feedback and enthusiasm over our Kitchen renovation this week…your excitement and confidence is fueling me to keep pushing forward to create a space perfect for us. Julia nailed it when she commented, “I’d rather be someone’s shot of whiskey, than everyone’s cup of tea!” And that girl has mad style and taste, so I think I’ll adopt her motto!

Between work and home life, this week has been full of paint swatches, tile orders, home inspections, lost title policies, and an endless list of house loose-ends. I’m ready to take a break from all that, and have a little fun with fashion.

I haven’t given my outfit selection much attention this month (and never mind that my hair’s been in a ponytail for three straight weeks), so I thought I’d create a few using items in my closet, in hopes of kick-starting my desire.

I can’t get enough fair isle, so I jumped at this sweater dress when it was marked down 50%. It’s super cute, but a tad long on me (I’m just under 5’4″). I always get asked about my crossbody bag when we travel…I’ve had mine for ages, but this one is perfection, and the price can’t be beat.

For the love of Fair Isle
Fair Isle Sweater Dress | Military Vest (black one on sale!) | Booties | Crossbody Bag

I’ve been wearing my puffer vests non-stop with jeans (as evidenced in my Sugarplum Style posts), but love the idea of pairing it with a casual dress and boots, too.

Stripes + Puffer
Striped Dress (more options) | Pink Puffer Vest  | Leopard Bag
Black Rainboots (see my Look-for-Less here)

One of my favorite things about Winter style, is how a structured coat can transform even the most basic and casual outfit. My favorite is a swing shape with a good collar…it’s both flattering and fun. These are such classic pieces that can elevate any outfit…and all of them are on super sale! Well, except the leopard heels, but I couldn’t deny them.

sexy jeans
Swing Coat | Polka Dot Infinity Scarf | Flap-Pocket Jeans (love these in a skinny version)
Pink Bag | Leopard Heels

.
It may be intervention time…my kitten cardi-wrap count now stands at three. I started with the striped one (see the outfit here), and loved it with all my heart, so decided to add a solid. But the problem is, choosing a color is like trying to pick a favorite kid…it’s virtually impossible most days. If you’re new around here, the cardi-wrap gets it’s nickname because it feels like being snuggled by kittens. Declawed kittens. Serious.

Cozy Cardi Wrap
Snuggle Cardi Wrap | Striped Turtleneck | Black Boots | Cognac Bag

Do you have a kitten-cardi yet?! You know you’re going to cave and get one eventually…2500 people can’t be wrong…so you might as well do yourself a favor, and cave while it’s still cold out. If you wait to give in to it’s snuggly power in March, you’ll only be kicking yourself for lost time you could have been wearing it. Just sayin.’

Okay, my fashion break is over…back to the construction zone. Follow me on InstaGram and Facebook if you want to see reno updates. And wish us luck…there may or may not be a closing in our future this afternoon. But I’m not allowed to speak of it yet, for fear of The Jinx. Happy weekend, lovebugs!

I love your fashion posts, your style is so fun! If it were a little cooler here in Florida I'd buy everything you post but alas, with above average highs this year I am missing out on all the fun! Keep doing what you do because I look forward to your posts every single day!!!!!

Always enjoy Fashion Friday. Lucky you (and smart) getting the kitchen reno done before you move it! We cooked and ate in the basement workshop during ours. Let's just say paper plates were very popular!
I loved your cross body bag (you're not kidding about great price!). I'm on the hunt for a cross body bag in black with built in wallet. I'd like to find a good quality one that will last me for years (I only change out bags seasonally or for travel). I'm trying to buy better quality once rather than several cheap ones. #tryingtochange.

We still have a fully operational kitchen, but sadly, we're already doing a lot of the paper plate thing!! As busy as we've been, there's a lot of take out happening. :/ Good luck on the bag hunt! xo

The cardi-wrap….I'm about the same height. Did you get a regular or petite size?

I've tried both on and didn't see much difference. I have monkey arms, so I went with the regular so I'd have enough length. 🙂 xo

I need to know more about that reversible tote! I've got bigger arms, so sometimes straps drive me crazy. Is there anyone out there with the same problem that can give me an idea of how the straps work? Thanks!

    • hisugarplum says: January 16, 2015 at 7:20 pm

Sometimes the description will say how long the straps are, so you can measure on yourself. Or check out the pic of the model holding it…that will give you an idea of how long the drop is on the strap. xo

oh Cassie, I tried so hard to love the kitten cardi-wrap…but it made my boobs look like a heavyset prison matron's. Soooooo sad b/c it was amazingly soft. So I returned it (my mom gave it to me for Christmas) and I got this from Nordstrom – loooove it: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/dogeared-karma-boxed-charm-necklace/3623728?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=2375500&fashionColor=&resultback=453&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-searchresults-_-1_2_B. 🙂

Friday Fashion

May 23, 2014

Whoop-whoop, it’s Friday! I know I’m ready for a time-out this weekend…how about you? I had other plans for today’s post, but when I caught word that Nordstrom was having their Half-Yearly Sale for Women and Children, I had to abort mission and check it out. This really is the mother of all good sales…the only thing that tops it is their Anniversary Sale later this Summer.

I scoured everything, and picked out my favorites…actual things that I’d buy and wear. And because I can’t help myself, I made some fashion moodboards….every last item in this post is on sale!! If that doesn’t make it a good Friday, then I don’t know what does! The downside is, everything sells out fast! I had items in my shopping cart last night, that are already sold out this morning. So don’t dilly-dally.

Chevron Tie Dress
Printed Shirt Dress | Sandals | Crossbody Bag
Hammered Hoop Earrings | Sunglasses
Stripes & Hot Pink
Striped Dress | Pink Pumps | Aqua Clutch
Beaded Necklace | Watch | Chain Bracelet | Sunglasses
weekend cool
Split-Neck Blouse | Twill Bomber Jacket | Distressed Jeans | Graphic Tote
Wedge Sandals | Aviators | Watch | Bib Necklace

And here are a few other items worth checking out because of their extreme discount…

Floral Halter Maxi Dress
Gathered Sheath Dress
Striped Organza Skirt
Kaliope Sandal

And since the sale is Women and Kids….let’s not forget them. I shop everywhere for my kids, but I’ve found over the years, that Nordstrom sale prices are as good as Target and Gap…but the quality is better, and the clothes don’t wear out before they outgrow them. Now’s the time when I’ll shop for next year’s sizes, too…especially shoes!

playful girl
Ruffle Dress | Zebra Toms | Hair Ties | Madame Alexander Plush Horse
Stripe Dress
Ruffle Wrap Dress
Sequin Ballerina Dress
North Face Jacket
Bailey Bow Uggs

Summer Boy
Striped Shirt | Cotton Shorts | Nike Free Runs
Watch | Drawstring Bag
North Face Fleece Jacket
Mini Boden Gingham Shirt
Chuck Taylor All-Stars
Tucker + Tate Straight Leg Jean

See anything you like? Don’t forget they have free shipping and returns (why don’t all the retailers do that?!?!). And if you haven’t yet, make sure you’ve entered to win the Swag Bag from my Style Blogger Conference. Unless you can’t be bothered with $1200 worth of awesome. Happy long weekend, lovebugs!

Friday Fashion

April 18, 2014

FRIDAY!!! Hoodie-Hoo! Let’s talk fashion and Mother’s Day gifts today, shall we?

1) I found this beyond cute dress online a few weeks ago, and had to try it for myself. I’m a sucker for a flirty, fit & flare dress (fitted on top, flared below the waist), and the $50 price tag can’t be beat. I’ve got some blog conferences and parties coming up, and hoped this would be a good option. Since the shipping and returns are free, I ordered both white and black. But now I can’t choose which to keep!

Hi Sugarplum | Nordstrom Dresses

Here’s an idea of how I’d style it….

White + Color
White Racerback Dress (similar & similar) | Turquoise Pumps | Yellow Clutch/Crossbody
Necklace | Watch | Bow Bracelet

2) And now the same dress in black….

Hi Sugarplum | Nordstrom Dresses
The pose on the right is awkward…have you ever tried to take a selfie of your back in the mirror?! There are so many ways to style a little black dress, but of course I love to throw in some color. What say you…white, black, neither? Or both?! Ha!
little black dress
Black Racerback Dress (similar & similar & similar) | Floral Sandals | Brushstroke Clutch
Pink Bangle | Gold Bangle | Teal Earrings

3) I created a moodboard around this floral number a few weeks ago (another $50 gem), so I added it to my shipment (free shipping and returns…holla!). I can’t decide if I’m horrified or if I love it. It’s a tad on the too-short side, but I’m crazy for the print. Never mind the shoes I’m wearing in the pics, and let’s pretend I brushed my hair. Yay or hay-ell no?

Hi Sugarplum | Nordstrom Dresses

And here it is all styled up….

Floral Fun
Floral Dress | Fuchsia Patent Pumps | Yellow Statement Necklace
Striped Bangle | Brushstroke Clutch
4) Clearly I love a good dress, but sometimes an extra layer is needed…for warmth and style. I scooped up this adorable cotton twill bomber jacket for only $23! Available in black, white and faded green. Cardigans are great for layering over dresses and skirts, but I like the bit of edge this jacket adds to an otherwise prissy outfit.
Hi Sugarplum | Nordstrom Dresses

5) Further proof this year is flying by….Mother’s Day is weeks away! I’ll pause while you panic and check your calendar. Yep, just around the corner. I usually get so busy scheming up what I want, that I almost forget my own sweet mom! She’s so easy and fun to shop for, but at the same time, I love to find her special and unique items that you can’t find just anywhere.
Uncommon Goods has become my go-to for creative and unique gifts…I can always find the best gift ideas for moms, dads and kids. They
carry thousands of cool gifts, from fun jewelry and accessories to
creative home decor and kitchen items. I love that they find and feature artists
and handmade items, and a portion of every order goes to your charity
of choice. My mom hates when I spend money on her, but I know she’ll love knowing her gift also did some good in the world. Here’s a few fun ideas for the special moms in your life…
Hi Sugarplum | Uncommon Goods Mother's Day Gifts
Agate Coasters | State Dishtowel | Butterfly World Map
Birdie Yarn Bowl | Succulent Living Wall Art Kit | Rainbow Nesting Bowls

Neat stuff, right? Have you started thinking about Mother’s Day? Help this mutha mother out and give me your feedback on the dresses! White, black, floral….what say you? Happy weekend, and Easter, lovebugs!

Your stylings are spot on. Consider one an early Mother's Day present to yourself? The too cute possibly too short floral print; ever consider adding a hot pink (or favorite other color) lace band inside the dress along the hem. Looks deliberate and another flirty detail. And you look wonderful with flirty detaisl…

Friday Fashion

October 25, 2013

Hoodie-hooooo, it’s Friday, friends! Granted I had a great week, but it was a whirlwind, and I’m ready to be still for a few days. It was amazing to experience New York City in the Fall, and their crisp temperatures allowed me to finally pull out my favorite cozy clothes. Several people asked about the different outfits in my InstaGram posts, so I thought I’d share the Fall outfits I packed for exploring the city.

We walked everywhere, so being comfortable was almost as important as looking cute. *I kid* This was my travel outfit…minimal jewelry so I could easily pass through security, boots that slip off quickly, and a large tote that doubles as my purse and carry-on. I added bold earrings and more bracelets for dinner that night.

Day 2 was walking, walking, and more walking….with cooler temps and the threat of rain. So I layered up, and wore tall boots to keep my jeans from getting wet. We lucked out and it stayed dry, but I did add a wool coat to the mix. I love layering pattern and bright color under sweaters for more interest around the face, and more often than not, my collar is popped. I guess it’s my inner-Molly Ringwald, but I just love the look.

Our last day was spent traveling home, so I went with a soft and comfy striped shirt and light jacket. I’m pretty crazy about these camo jeans, and the booties are super affordable, while still being really comfortable.

Since we were only gone three days, I didn’t need to follow my own packing tips about mixing and matching too much, but I kept it light for simpler travel. Unlike some people. *wink*

Can you guess which bag was mine?

Are you pulling out the boots and jeans yet? Happy weekend, lovebugs!

I absolutely love the camo jeans. I might have to get me a pair (if my booty fits into them). The pictures of the suitcases cracked me up! I would have been like Megan..just bring whatever and decide when I get there. I need to be more like you when I pack! Have a great weekend my friend! xoxo

Cracking up at Megan and her giant suitcase 🙂 And you rocked that camo like soldier! Glad you got to experience northeast fall – there's a reason boots and scarves are so "in" up here. And that is because we are all freezing.

I was one of those drooling over/nose pressed to my phone inspecting your outfits on IG. So glad you posted these, I don't think my phone can handle any more drool/nose smudges. I never thought I'd need camo pants in my life but I'm about to wake Quinn up from her nap just so we can go get some.

Also, I like the way Megan packs 😉

I loved all the IG pics from your trip. I'm so jealous and can't wait to read all about it. Love the outfits too. I'm a small town city girl who grew up in the country and to me, camo means hunting. I just can't bring myself to wear camo but you, Sheaffer and Shay make strong arguments for it.

I have to travel for work sometimes and I am definitely Megan. My coworker is you with the small suitcase while mine is enormous. 🙂

Hi ~ I have a question about the camo pants ~ I tried on the RockStar skinnies last night, Usually I'm a 4 or 6 but eww I couldn't like the way they fit. Did you have to go up a size in them? And are the Camo's the same fit? I've seen your comments before about your 'body type', mine is similar – skinny waist and more junk in the trunk – lol. So I'm curious about how you felt in them? Thanks!

Hi Susie!! Those camo pants are actually from the Gap, so they fit different from the Old Navy Rockstars. I took my regular size in them, but could have easily sized up one for some room. 🙂

As for the Rock Stars…I have 3 pairs and they are size 2, 4, and 8!!! Some have just 2% stretch, some have a large percentage of something else. The ones that are 98% cotton I have to size way way up. Hate when they aren't consistent!!!

      Hope this helps!

Dang! I waited too long and the camo pants are gone in the green color. 🙁 Any other places that might have them? Oh, and a question about the pink scarf, the link goes to a Waffle Knit Infinity scarf at gap, the picture doesn't look like a knit scarf or an infinity. Is the link wrong? Thanks!
