Dressing Room Diaries

Happy Friday, friends, and cheers to the weekend! We’ve got a volleyball tournament and track meet on the agenda, so it’s going to be a busy one. With lots of whistles. Is it just me, or do the whistles get louder as I get older? I even started wearing my beloved Sleep Buds as earplugs to the courts (without the sound machine function!)

Thanks so much for the love on this week’s post, especially the Five Elements of My Fitness Routine yesterday! Clearly it’s a topic we’re all passionate about, so I’m hoping to bring more to the blog soon! Be sure to read all the comments, too…so much great insight! We also talked about Spring dresses for Easter, graduation and more, plus a round-up of my outfits lately. It’s hard to sit on opposite sides of the computer sometimes, so I always love hearing from you!

Today I’m excited to share a new Dressing Room Diaries, and it’s a good one with so many great finds for the upcoming season! Plus, Mama Sugarplum is along for the fun!

You know the drill with Dressing Room Diaries…I hunt down some of the cutest items from my favorite retailers, and review them for you. As usual, the shots aren’t good, the lighting is bad, and I’m in desperate need of a hairbrush. But it’s real life, real girl, real clothes…and hopefully helpful for you to see them this way, instead of perfectly styled on a model. So let’s get started!

Sidenote: I’m 5’4″ and 120-ish pounds, and usually wear a 0/XS. Mama Sugarplum is 5’1″ with an hourglass figure, and usually wears an XS/2p.

 

Let’s start with Mama SP’s fave…this striped top! I think she has half the colors available now, but it’s just so easy and darling, with a sturdy cotton and ballet neckline. The sleeves are three-quarter, perfect for Spring!

Fit Tip: We both size up to a small for relaxed fit.

Let’s pause on the jeans a moment…we’re both wearing the same style and LOVE them. Kut From the Kloth has quickly become one of our go-to denim brands (you know we love the jean jacket!). The fit is great for a woman’s body, with room for hips and thighs, but no gaping at the waistband. These are a thick, stretchy denim with no see-thru pockets, and a comfy mid-rise. They’re also ankle-length, perfect for sandals and wedges.

Fit Tip: We’re both wearing a regular 2, but if you’re in-between, I’d go down one. They do give a little over time.

This split-neck blouse makes a great Work to Weekend top…gorgeous with trousers or a pencil skirt, and chic with jeans and heels or even flat sandals. Super versatile, it comes in several bold colors. I love the little gathers on the front and slight cap sleeve.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS, but it’s a little low, so size down if you’re not busty.

This isn’t normally the type of blouse I’d gravitate towards, but Mom was swooning so hard I had to try! Adore the colors and neckline, plus the roll-tab sleeves. It looks super sheer on the hanger, but not so much once it’s on. You could easily layer a cami though. It comes in tons of pattern options, and the colors of each are spot-on!

Fit Tip: We’re both wearing XS, and it’s true to size.

I love an embroidered top, especially in the Summer time! They’re just so festive and colorful! This one is so soft and billowy, with gorgeous embroidery. So cute with white jeans or shorts, too. The jean shorts are a fun distressed option that fit great through the waist, and are stretchy through the hips and bum.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small, but it is oversized, so I’d size down one. The shorts are a 26, but I’d prefer a 27, so size up one.

This shrunken polo shirt makes my preppy-loving heart sing!! I love the close fit through the shoulders, and smaller collar…all give it a feminine fit, perfect for everything from jeans to skirts. It comes in a slew of colors and is 50% off, too!

Fit Tip: It’s true to size if you like the shrunken fit, I’m wearing an XS. Size down one in the short though, I’m in a 25.

Oh hey, gorgeous! How cute is this tunic top with the fringe trim? It falls to the mid hip with a slight bell in the sleeve. The material is light and crisp, but doesn’t wrinkle easily.

Fit Tip: It’s true to size, she’s wearing an XS

You know if it’s pink and striped, I’m going to try it, right?! This pullover knit is super soft and the perfect light weight for Spring. It comes in a ton of solids and stripes, and easily dresses up for work, but so cute for weekends, too.

The pleated ruffles of this top are so sweet, and beautifully made. It’s silky soft and fitted through the body and shoulders. I’d love it paired with a patterned skirt, too.

Fit Tip: This brand is European sizing, so go up one. I’m in a 4.

I love a good graphic tee layered under jackets and blazers for Spring, and alone with shorts in the Summer. These two are colorful and fun, plus soft.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing XS in both.

Graphic tees give blazers a fun touch of personality…I love them under this linen-blend Spring blazer. It’s structured, but still soft and slightly relaxed. The length is a little long for my style (I prefer shrunken blazers), but Mama Sugarplum loved it.

Fit Tip: We’re both wearing size 2 jackets.

Another darling embroidered option, this one in a tunic-style top. The pinks and greens are so fun and unexpected, and beautifully sewn. There’s even a little embroidered cuff at the wrist. The body is a dotted that’s lightweight and a tad sheer on the arms.

Fit Tip: This is a European brand, so I size up one. This is a 4.

Someone is quite pleased with her new top! So cute with varying color stripes and lace-up tie on the back. It’s a sturdy linen-blend  with longer sleeves and a little bit of a boxy fit.

Gingham plus peplum? Count me in! A crisp, lightweight cotton with a slim fit through the shoulders and a peplum kick.This top is darling, and so cute with shorts or jeans. Sadly, the white is too sheer for my taste.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small in the gingham and XS in the white…I prefer the XS, so true to size.

These crochet shorts are so fun and unexpected! Fully lined with a back zip, they fit smooth against your waist, but are fuller through the thigh. I like the wider leg for slimming effects! The top is a nice woven material with v-neck and fun polka dots.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS in both pieces.

Obviously I have a thing for wide-leg beach pants (did you see we just released new colors in our Gibson x Hi Sugarplum cabana pants?), and these are silky soft, so lightweight, and super flowy. The wide elastic waistband is super comfy and creates a slimming effect.

Fit Tip: The pants are oversized, so you may want to size down. I’m wearing an XS (with wedges so they won’t drag the ground). The tank is a fave too, I’m in an XS

Let’s move on to jumpsuits…a favorite category of y’alls lately! I wore this drapey wide leg jumpsuit to the theater in NYC (see it here), and it was perfect! So light and flowy, with the cutest cap sleeves and cut-out back (but still bra-friendly!). I’d wear this year-round, and love it with flat sandals or heels.

Fit Tip: True to size, I’m in a size 0

Another fun option, this one would be darling for showers and graduations. A linen-blend with ruffle sleeves and pockets, it’s chic and flirty. I’d add colorful shoes and wear it for Easter, too!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular 0, but petite sizing available, too.

Last jumpsuit for the week, this woven material drapes well and has fun varying stripes. Dress it up with heels and statement jewels, or throw on a jean jacket and flat sandals.

More wide leg pants, because I can’t get enough of them lately! There’s so much freedom in the flowy pants! These are a darling bold floral with pockets and a removable tie. I love the pattern mix with the spots, or you could go with the matching top for a set.

Fit Tip: The pants run a tad small through the bum, so size up one if you’re fuller through the hips. The top is true, I’m in an XS

Lastly…some gorgeous dresses for all your Spring occasions! You saw this one in this week’s Spring Florals post, but I wanted to share the pink version, as well. Such a classic dress, perfect for church and work. It would be darling with a little cardigan, too.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 4, but would prefer my usual 2…so true to size.

Can we just pause and appreciate the beauty of this bold ruffle?! I adore everything about this dress, from the one shoulder to the fit-and-flare shape. Plus the color is stunning. I’d likely hem it a little for my frame, but that’s an easy adjustment.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a size 2, but need my stick-on bra to fill out the top a little better.

This dress is absolutely precious, but without being too sweet. It’s a thick and sturdy cotton blend, that’s fully-lined, but still moves well. I love the square neck and little cap sleeve. There’s also a little bow tie on the back (that holds the belt flat).

Fit Tip: Im wearing a 0, but need a 2 for a little easier breathing.

Have you ever seen a Springier dress?! Linen-blend and multi-colored gingham, this dress is perfect for everything from church to brunch to showers. It’s fully-lined with pockets, and sweet puff sleeves.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 0, but would prefer a 2 for more room in the upper arms.

The last dress, and probably my fave of the bunch…this striped sheath a thick, super-stretchy ribbed sweater knit, with an exposed back zipper. It magically hugs the body without being body-con, and has the perfect deep-V.
