Dressing Room Diaries

Cheers to Friday, friends, and the weekend ahead! I can’t even wrap my head around the events of this week…between the earthquake in Mexico, and yet another hurricane, it’s so overwhelming and heartbreaking. It was less than a week ago that I reported our beloved Vieques had weathered Irma unscathed, and now it looks like total devastation.

We have so many amazing memories of Puerto Rico (see our Trip Reports here, here, here & here), and the people are literally the nicest of any we’ve encountered on our travels. I have no doubt they’ll prevail, but I’m heartbroken for them in the meantime. We’re on the lookout for ways we can help directly, so please let me know if you know of any causes directly related to Puerto Rico.

Today I’m excited to bring you another Dressing Room Diaries, and this one is a beast. I kept trying to whittle it down, but I found too many cute things not to share! I’ve had so many requests to make this a weekly series, and while I don’t know that I can manage that, I am trying to increase the frequency!

You know the drill with Dressing Room Diaries…I hunt down some of the cutest items from my favorite retailers, and review them for you. As usual, the shots aren’t good, the lighting is bad, and I’m in desperate need of a hairbrush. Many of the items aren’t a good fit for me…but it’s real life, real girl, real clothes…and hopefully helpful for you to see them this way, instead of perfectly styled on a model. So let’s get started!

Fit Note: I’m 5’4″-ish, 120 pounds-ish (depending on the week’s taco count), with a slight pear shape. Mama Sugarplum is 5’1″, with an hourglass figure. Our usual size is XS/0.

Let’s start with my number one pick of the week…this fuzzy soft cowlneck tunic-style top. It’s that perfect weight between ‘not too hot’ and ‘not sheer’…you know what I mean? It’s got a high-low hem, covering the bum (great for leggings), and a fun deep cowlneck. The website shows it worn off one shoulder and even both shoulders, but it doesn’t stay put very well when worn like that. It comes in a slew of colors, but I’m partial to this charcoal.

Fit Tip: It’s true to size, I’m wearing regular XS.

Cowlneck Tunic | Distressed Jeans | Sandals | Earrings

My other favorite find this week is this v-neck sweater (featured in this week’s Faves Under $50!)…it’s a soft, ribbed knit…again, the perfect weight to wear alone (not scratchy) or layered over a collared shirt. The v-neck is just deep enough to be sassy, but not show the goods. It also has ribbing at the arms, so the sleeves stay put when you pull them up! (Random, I know, but a plus for me!)

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS. Sizing up would make it long enough for leggings, but you’d probably need to layer a cami under.

V-Neck Pullover Sweater | Distressed Jeans | Sandals | Earrings

This plaid peplum top fits more like a drop-waist, so it’s suitable for most body types. The material is this and all-seasonal, and the plaid print a combo of navy and oxblood. It also has a cute tie at the back to give it a little some extra.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS, but petite sizing is available, too.

Plaid Peplum Top (50% off!) | White Jeans | Booties

Mama SP loved it, and preferred the longer length of the regular, as opposed to the peplum style a petite would have given her.

White Jeans | Booties | Plaid Peplum Top | Dark Jeans | Booties

Fancy sweatshirts are kind of my jam this season (and they’re everywhere!!). I featured this ruffle collar sweatshirt in gray already, but had to try the navy and seersucker combo, too! The collar is removable, but the I don’t know why you’d ever want to take it out!?

Fit Tip: It runs true, and my usual XS has a relaxed fit.

Ruffle Collar Sweatshirt (50% off!) | White Jeans (30% off!) | Booties

This top wears like a shirt or light jacket, depending on whether or not you zip it, and the seams and print create a flattering hourglass shape. It’s a thick cotton with a decent amount of stretch, and comes in a few great Fall colors, but of course I’m partial to the stripes.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a reg XS

Peplum Zip-Up Top | White Jeans (30% off!) | Booties

Mama SP was looking super cute in it, too! I’d love it with jeans and knee boots, or with slacks and pumps for work.

Twist Front Shirt | White Jeans | Booties | Peplum Zip-Up Top | Dark Jeans | Booties

My other Fall obsession is cozy, oversized cardigans, and this one checks off all the boxes! It has a thick, plush feel, but the shawl color and slight bloused sleeve keep it stylish. It’s perfect for traveling, or cozying up at outdoor sporting events!

Fit Tip: It runs large, so I sized down to an XXS

Oversized Shawl Collar Cardigan | Fave Tee | White Jeans (30% off) | Booties

This pullover hoodies is dangerously soft and cozy…the kind you put on Friday night, and don’t take off until Monday morning. So if you’re not okay with staying in sweats all weekend, maybe steer clear of this one!

Fit Tip: True to size, I’m in XS

Boucle Funnel Neck Sweatshirt | Distressed Jeans

This speckled knit top has a v-shape in the front and back, with a tie closure. It’s fairly bell-shaped through the body, and a little cropped in the front. They refer to it as a sweater, but it’s more like a thick knit top.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS, but think it’s too short for my long torso

Tie Back Sweater | Dark Jeans | Sandals

Another great oversized cardigan option, this one is more traditional sweater material, but still with the great shawl color. It’s also the perfect length for jeans and leggings, and comes in a few great colors. This is the charcoal.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS

Shawl Collar Cardigan | Distressed Jeans | Fave Tee

Plaid shirts set my preppy-loving heart aflutter, but it’s tricky to find prints that are more feminine and less lumberjack. This navy and green combo does just that, and has a close fit through the shoulders and body, making it easy to dress up or down. I’ll wear it with dark and white jeans, and even with this pleated skirt and a statement necklace.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 0, but I’d size up one if you’re busty.

Plaid Shirt | Frayed Hem Jeans

I’m already smitten with this tee in white (see it styled here), but wanted to show you the darker stripes, too. Except I couldn’t seem to put this one back, so now I’m the proud owner of two of these tees. #mybad The peplum falls at the right spot for my longer torso, so it doesn’t look maternity.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing XS

Striped Peplum Tee | Sandals | Frayed Hem Jeans

Mom and I are both suckers for Peter Pan collars, so couldn’t wait to try this crepe blouse. It’s made even cuter by the pleated sleeve trim! You could dress it down for Date Night with jeans and heels, or pair it with pants or a skirt for work. She swears by these pants, and wears them on repeat!

Fit Tip: She’s wearing an XS

Contrasting Collar Blouse | Ponte Ankle Pants

Let’s move on to a few outerwear styles…staring with this feminine denim jacket! The puff sleeves are darling and create a fun silhouette, but I wouldn’t recommend if you have broad shoulders.

Fit Tip: I prefer my jean jackets fitted, so I sized down one.

Puff Sleeve Jean Jacket | Distressed Jeans | Sandals | Earrings

My favorite outerwear score of the week is hands-down this pink bomber! It’s the perfect shade of blush (not too sweet!), and has an edgy gold zipper. You could wear it as a blazer for work, or pair it with booties or over the knee boots for a sassy look.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small in this pic, but ended up grabbing my usual XS for a closer fit.

Pink Bomber Jacket | Striped Tee | Frayed Hem Jeans | Sandals

Moving right along to dresses…always my favorite category, especially since we’re attending a Fall wedding next month. I’ve found so many awesome options, but I’ll probably end up wearing this stunner…it’s my favorite and the biggest bang for your buck! But this tweed dress is a great Work Wear option…the print is subtle with a slight cap sleeve and extra kick at the hem. The material is thick and fully-lined…and of course the best feature, pockets!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a reg 2

Tweed Fit-and-Flare Dress

I can never resist trying any fit-and-flare dress, especially when it has flutter sleeves and fun lace detail. This lace is substantial (rather than delicate), and the sturdy material keeps everything tucked in. Which is good, considering you can’t wear a bra with it! I wish it were a tad longer, but it’s a great length for petite ladies, or the younger crowd.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 0

Lace Fit-and-Flare Dress

The lace dress was too short for mom’s comfort zone, but she loved the tweed option. And the cotton stretched just enough to accommodate her larger chest. Doesn’t she have such a pretty shape?!

Lace Fit-and-Flare Dress | Tweed Fit-and-Flare Dress

This deep purple is everywhere this season, and it’s so gorgeous for Fall! This sheath is fully-lined with a delicate lace overlay, and definitely body-conscious! I love the cap sleeves, and you have to see the back!

Fit Tip: It runs small…I couldn’t get this 0 fully-zipped, so I’d recommend sizing up one.

Lace Sheeth Dress | Nude Sandals

This thick cotton-knit, however, fit like a glove and had me swooning and twirling in the dressing room. (Always my indicator it’s a keeper!) The ruffle trim at the neck and sleeves is just enough to make the classic fit-and-flare special. It’s thick enough to be all-seasonal, and it’d be darling with a thin belt and heels.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a reg XS, but petite sizing is available.

Ruffle Collar Fit-and-Flare Dress (40% off!) | Sandals

I actually own this dress from several years ago (see it styled 2 Ways here), but wanted to try this newer version to see if it’s just as good. And I’m happy to report YES! It feels like a thick t-shirt, but has the ability to transform your body into full sass! I layer all kinds of jackets over it, and transition it with sandals or booties.

Fit Tip: I size up to a small for a slightly less body-con fit.

Rushed Tank Dress

I’m quite positive this jersey knit swing dress is the deal of the day!! I loved the sleeveless version of it this Summer (see it here), and this long-sleeve is just as good! It’s fitted through the arms and upper body so as not to overwhelm your frame, and for such a comfy dress (it honestly feels like a nightie!), it’s surprisingly flattering!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS

Striped Swing Dress | Sandals

How could I not try this a-line skirt with ruffle hem?! It’s a pull-on with elastic waist, so it’s very forgiving, but a tad on the short side for my comfort level.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing 0, but prob.ably need to size down one

Ruffle Dot Shirt | Tiered Ruffle Skirt

Okay, we’re almost done…are you still with me?! These cropped joggers were also featured in this week’s Faves Under $50, and even though it’s hard to get a real feel for them in this pic, I’m completely hooked! I spend a fair amount of time in lounge wear (I have this thing about being comfy every moment I’m home), but still want to look good! These are super soft and thick, and the crop falls at just the right spot on my leg to be flattering. I’d even wear them for travel, paired with a jean jacket!

Fit Tip: I sized up for more relaxed fit through the hips and bum. I’m wearing a small

Cropped Jogger Pants | Fave Tee | Tennis Shoes

Mr. SP has a big birthday coming up, and we’ve decided to celebrate with a trip to Sedona next weekend! I think it will be right up his hippie, outdoor-loving alley! We’re planning on lots of hiking and eating, so I’ll be bringing all my fave workout wear. I love this twisty top…it’s jersey knit and a great weight for hiking.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS in both.

Twisty Tee Top | Athletic Leggings | Tennis Shoes

And finally, let’s end with my favorite find of late…this crepe sheath dress! You saw it styled for Work to Weekend here, but I had to try it in more colors! And now I also own it in navy (shown here) and wine!! I’m not even embarrassed, the dress is just too good. It’s so versatile depending on the shoe choice, and will transition beautifully with the addition of a jacket.

Sheath Crepe Shirtdress | Leopard Scarf (similar) | Peep Toe Booties

Okay, I think that’s enough for today! I do hope you found this post helpful, and maybe discovered some new goodies. What’s your favorite from this round of Dressing Room Diaries? Be sure to check my last one for tons more Fall transitional pieces! Happy weekend, lovebugs, and all my love to the people of Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Dear Real Girl/Real Clothes-all the great sweaters say ” perfect for a football game”.
How brave of you to wear horizontal stripes, but you can pull it off brilliantly.
The purple lace dress-as if it was made just for you. Lovely perfection. Try not to outdo the bride at a wedding w/this one. They may ask you to leave-ha,ha. Great job, Cassie!

Love this round of “the diaries”! You are going to love Sedona. We just came back from a week in Scottsdale and took a side trip to Sedona. It’s a beautiful little town. Take a jeep tour if you can. They are super fun, we laughed so hard through the whole thing…had to put my organs back in their normal places afterward.

  9. Love all the fall touches! I can’t wait for cooler weather- it’s so hot in West Michigan this week! The forecast is calling for a high of 94 today! I’m ready for sweaters, but I’d rather not put the ‘sweat’ in sweater at the moment. 😉 Also loving those athletic leggings. Great finds!

    Hi Cassie-
I live in Prescott which is about an hour from Sedona. I think you guys would love a little side trip to the wineries in the Verde Valley and recommend Page Springs Cellars. It is an adorable place to sit and have a glass (or two). They even have a picnic window where you can grab food and wine and sit out by the water. Have fun 🙂

Hey Cassie, I can’t recall if it was on Fox4 or NBC5 recently but nevertheless Pudge Rodriguez is doing a collection drive for the residents of Puerto Rico. I just looked for the link to share with you and it was on NBC: http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/Rodriguez-Helping-Puerto-Rico-With-Hurricane-Relief-Drive-446981473.html. This one might be a good one if you want to get your kiddos involved which is hard to do with organizations that say they just need the financial contributions.

Hi! I live in AZ and I saw that you’re making a trip to Sedona.. one of my all time favorite places! You might know this already, but I highly recommend the West Fork Trail for hiking.. so incredibly beautiful. Devil’s Bridge is also a great hike.
Now on to the more important details.. food. 😉 There is an ice cream place on the Main Street that runs through Sedona called The Black Cow Cafe. Delicious ice cream!! The Pink Java Cafe has good coffee, and if you are flying into Phoenix and driving to Sedona, I highly recommend stopping at Rock Springs for the most delicious pie! Seriously amazing. There Tennessee Lemon is out of this world, along with the Strawberrry Rhubarb. But you really cannot go wrong! 😉 Hope this helps!
