Dressing Room Diaries

Cheers to Friday, friends, and the weekend ahead! I can hardly believe we’re once again watching helplessly as a hurricane barrels towards our coastline! We are praying for all our dear friends in Florida and the eastern coast, and our hearts go out to the Caribbean Islands that have already been devastated. Mr. SP and I have traveled to several over the years, and we’re anxiously hoping they are okay.

Today I’m excited to bring you another Dressing Room Diaries, this time with my darling Mama Sugarplum. I’ve had so many requests to make this a weekly series, and while I don’t know that I can manage that, I will try to increase the frequency!

You know the drill with Dressing Room Diaries…I hunt down some of the cutest items from my favorite retailers, and review them for you. As usual, the shots aren’t good, the lighting is bad, and I’m in desperate need of a hairbrush. Many of the items aren’t a good fit for me…but it’s real life, real girl, real clothes…and hopefully helpful for you to see them this way, instead of perfectly styled on a model. So let’s get started!

Fit Note: I’m 5’4″-ish, 120 pounds-ish (depending on the week’s taco count), with a slight pear shape. Mama Sugarplum is 5’1″, with an hourglass figure. Our usual size is XS/0.

Let’s start with my number one pick of the week…this crepe sheath dress! You saw it styled for Work to Weekend in yesterdays post, but I had to try it in more colors! This is a gorgeous deep blue, and I love the maroon, as well. There’s also a dark mustard that would be gorgeous on those of you with dark hair. This dress is so versatile depending on the shoe choice, and will transition beautifully with the addition of a jacket.

Fit Tip: It’s true to size, I’m in an XS.

Crepe Sheath Dress

Mama Sugarplum was a fan, too! She’d pair it with a pendant necklace (like this one) and heels for work, and flat sandals (like these) for weekend.

Fit Tip: She’s wearing an XS.

Crepe Sheath Dress

I never met a stripe I didn’t love, and these two long-sleeve tees are no exception. Mine is a more traditional basic tee, with a fitted body and hip-length, while Mom’s is relaxed and tunic-length. Both are soft and not too sheer, making them a great base layer for jackets and cardigans, or worn alone. My jeans are labeled as ‘boyfriend’, but they’re really just a bit relaxed, so if skinny jeans aren’t your jam, you’ll likely love these!

Fit Tip: We’re both wearing XS tops, and jeans are true to size.

More stripes! This one in a darling sweatshirt with ties on the arms. It’s fitted through the arms and body, and slightly cropped on my long torso. The sleeves are three quarter, as well. It comes in a several solid colors with contrasting cuffs, but note that this stripe is actually ivory, not white.

Fit Tip: True to size, I’m wearing an XS.

Tie-Sleeve Sweatshirt | White Jeans | Booties

Fun sweatshirts are the thing this Fall, and this one has a darling detachable ruffle collar. I love these styles for pairing casually with jeans, but also as an unexpected top with skirts and slacks. It’s not bulky, so you could even tuck it in a pencil skirt.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Ruffle Collar Sweatshirt | White Jeans | Booties

You can see the striped sweatshirt is longer on my mom.

As for the polka dots, she has a larger chest and decided to size up one. She also likes it with the little bowtie showing (I tucked it in). #colonelsanderscalled

Ruffle Collar Sweatshirt | White Jeans | Booties | Tie-Sleeve Sweatshirt | Dark Rinse Jeans | Booties

I’ve shared this sleeveless sweater before, but was anxious to try the blush pink shade, too. The waffle knit material is soft and thick enough to wear alone, but also cute layered over a long-sleeve tee. The collar would also be fun paired with a fitted blazer, making this a super-versatile piece for several seasons.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS, but petite sizing is available. You could also size up if you prefer a relaxed, tunic-style fit.

Waffle Knit Cowlneck Sweater | White Jeans | Booties

I’m embracing my inner Flashdance with this relaxed off-the-shoulder sweatshirt. It’s just sassy enough without showing too much skin, and easy to wear with both jeans and workout pants. The banded waist keeps it from being too sloppy.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Off-the-Shoulder Sweatshirt | White Jeans | Booties

Mama SP prefers the sweatshirt worn as a deep crewneck.

This top feels like fleecy pajamas, but the half-tuck gives it a lot of style. It comes in a slew of colors, and I wear it with both jeans and workout leggings.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS.

Half-Tuck Shirt | White Jeans | Booties

Mama SP is wearing the regular size, too, and loves the longer length. Petite sizing is available if you prefer it shorter.

Blush pink and oxblood is a favorite color combination right now…it’s just so fresh and unexpected for Fall…and this striped short-sleeve sweater has me swooning. It’s soft and stretchy and I love the slightly longer sleeve length.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Striped Short Sleeve Sweater | Dark Rinse Jeans | Sandals | Earrings

This silky blouse combines a flutter sleeve and smocking to create a super feminine top that’s great for work or weekends. The sleeveless is great for now, but the deep blue makes it perfect for Fall, as well.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a reg XS.

Flutter Sleeve Blouse | Dark Rinse Jeans | Sandals

I thought this top was a little odd, but was drawn to the plaid…and then I fell in love once I got it on!! The colors are so Fall, and the mix of materials makes it special. The lace is a sturdy cotton, and the body is a flowy rayon…so pretty with jeans or dressed up.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a reg XS.

Plaid Crochet Blouse | Dark Rinse Jeans | Sandals

I tend to stick with tops in these try-on sessions…mostly because I’m too lazy to take my pants off, but the pattern of these was worth the effort! They’re a flowy material that hang and drape beautifully, and the wide cropped length is perfect for sandals, heels and even tall boots. I paired them with a vibrant color sweater, but they’re easily dialed down with a solid black or white top.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a reg XS sweater, and a 2P pant. I’d actually recommend sizing up one in the pants (in the petite sizing anyway).

Short-Sleeve Sweater | Patterned Pants | Sandals

The ruffle trend is going strong for another season, and I couldn’t be happier! This sweater looked a little ‘pirate’ on the hanger, but wasn’t too overwhelming at all. The ruffles aren’t overly exaggerated, and the placement is right on. It comes in a soft pink that reminds me of this look from last Fall.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS sweater.

Ruffle Sleeve Sweater | White Jeans | Booties

Mom opted for another ruffle collar sweatshirt (I shared this one last week), and I couldn’t agree more!!

Ruffle Sleeve Sweater | White Jeans | Booties | Ruffle Collar Sweatshirt | Dark Rinse Jeans | Sandals

Let’s get sassy for a minute with some dresses that pack an unexpected punch! I was shocked by how well this dress fit (pretend I’m wearing these heels)…and the high quality for the price! It’s a thick jersey cotton, so there’s a fair amount of stretch, but it also smooths over the lumps and bumps. It has a slight halter neckline, so a racerback or strapless bra is necessary, but the keyhole doesn’t reveal too much.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a reg XS. Petite sizing is available, but I like the knee-length for keeping it classy.

Keyhole Shift Dress | Sandals | Earrings

I’m still rolling through dresses for a Fall wedding (see my other options thus far here), and I’m cuckoo for this deep plum shade. This lace option has a lot of stretch, so it really forms to your shape, and the three-quarter sleeves keep you modestly covered. The back is the real showstopper though!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a reg 0.

Lace Dress

Mama Sugarplum works in a casual, yet conservative office, so she’s always on the lookout for workwear tops to pair with her favorite black pants and skirts. She loved the vibrant color and little cap sleeves of this jersey rayon top, and the side-tie creates a flattering waistline.

Fit Tip: She’s wearing an XS top and 4p pants.

Side-Tie Blouse | Black Pants

A-line and fit-and-flare silhouettes are my wheelhouse, but J.Crew Factory knows how to make an irresistible pencil skirt! This style is my favorite…it’s a thick cotton with a lot of stretch, so it molds to your shape and really elongates. And how can you resist their fun prints!? This one is lovely now with a sleeveless blouse, and later with a chambray shirt, jean jacket, or even a striped sweater! (The tee is just what I had on that day at the store.)

Fit Tip: I size down to fit my waist, and the lycra stretches to accommodate my hips and bum…I’m wearing a 00.

Scoopneck Favorite Tee | Floral Skirt

Another classic they know how to do perfectly, is the fitted schoolboy blazer! I mean, just look at this color and fun herringbone pattern! I’d pair it with a tee and jeans, over a turtleneck as a light jacket, with skirts and dresses…basically I wear it just as I would a jean jacket (here’s 5 Ways to inspire you)…except it’s pink! #swoon.

Herringbone Blazer | Favorite Tee | Cargo Pants

Okay, switching gears…let’s chat activewear. Mr. SP and I attended our first Orange Theory class this week, and I’m hoping it’s something we’ll stick with. And not just so I can buy cute new workout clothes. #okaymaybe But look how cute!!?? I sized up one in the top, and almost had a panic attack getting it on, but everything is tucked in nice and tight!! And the pants are soft, stretchy, and perfectly thick.

Fit Tip: Size up one in the top, maybe even 2 if you’re busty…the pants are true to size. I’m wearing a S and XS, respectively.

Ladderback Tank | Striped Leggings

Mom needed in on the action, but prefers longer sleeves, so she paired the leggings with a pullover.

Fit Tip: She’s wearing a small jacket and small pants.

Hoodie Sweatshirt | Striped Leggings

She’s also a fan of these high-waisted leggings for keeping everything tucked in.

Ladderback Tank | Striped Leggings| Hoodie Sweatshirt | High-Rise Leggings

Let’s talk surprising finds…first up, this camo utility jacket! It comes in a slew of colors, but I jumped on this fun camo print. The jacket is a thick cotton twill with banding at the wrists, and an adjustable drawstring at the waist to create an hourglass shape. This jacket is serious bang for your buck, friends!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS, but if you’re in-between sizes, I’d go up one.

Camo Utility Jacket | Half-Tuck Black Tee | White Jeans | Sandals

Shocker #2 is this faux-leather moto jacket…which fits like a glove and looks anything but faux! I’d pair it with jeans and a camisole for date night (like this look), or even over a feminine dress.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Finally…obviously we’re both fans of this peplum tee…since we each showed up wearing it!! And with our coordinating bags, no less! I’m so grateful for this woman in my life, and I pray my daughter wants to stay this close to me as she grows!

Fit Tip: We’re both wearing XS in the tees. As for the jeans we’re wearing throughout the post..I’m in my go-to white jeans (I had them hemmed), and she swears by these mid-rise dark jeans.

Okay, I think that’s enough for today! I do hope you found this post helpful, and maybe discovered some new goodies. What’s your favorite from this round of Dressing Room Diaries? Be sure to check my last one for tons more Fall transitional pieces! Happy weekend, lovebugs, and if you’re in the path of Irma, please stay safe!!! xoxo C.

  1. It’s not just Mama Sugarplum who has taken a liking for the Crepe Sheath Dress. I have too! It looks really cute and perfect as a fall dress.

I love these posts! You look amazing in that lace dress (I wish I had a wedding coming up so I could buy it!). I love all of those peplum tees you find but every time I try them on, I feel like I look pregnant in them. Maybe I’m just too long waisted for them. I have a Nordstrom note burning a hole in my pocket and think I’m headed there today to find that cozy Gibson top!

I totally get that pregnant thing…I feel the same in some of them, too! I think bc I have a long torso, the peplum needs to break below my natural waist. This tee (and the long sleeve version) are good for my frame! xo

Fun post as always. The link to the lace dress sends you to another sleeveless dress instead of the one you show. Might want to edit that.
I need to clean out my closet then maybe I’ll have room for some of the cute looks you featured.

  13. Your mom is tooo cute!!! How fun to try on everything together. I also appreciate how you each try on what the other had so if my shape is more like your mom’s (which it is) I can see better how it would look on me.
My fave? That pink blazer is the perfect color 🙂

Is the black dress too short for work? I’m so picky about length of my dresses that I can’t seem to find any just long enough, like just above the knee.

I’m so glad I stumbled across your blog. I too love the posts with you and your mom — I wish mine lived closer. Regarding the pictures with the white jeans…. does this mean I can keep on wearing them even though it is after Labor Day? 😉 White jeans are perfect for college football game day and my daughter’s high school sporting events (team colors!). Thank you for all that you do. You keep this mid-forty-something mama from looking frumpy. 😉

I liked the pleated lace dress in the last batch, although see what you mean about the colouring, but the lace dress here is definitely my pick for the wedding. It looks fantastic on you and the exposed zip adds some modernity.
Also that pink herringbone jacket is great.
