{Living Room} Finally a New Rug!

Wowza, that was a fast weekend! We had a baseball game, and an afternoon at the lake…then BAM, weekend over! I meant to work on a few projects, but ended up baking for hours. Not sure where that urge came from, but it was very comforting. I am excited about today, because I’m finally showing you the new rug in our Living Room!

Hi Sugarplum | Moroccan Rug

Remember when we had the big conversation about keeping things in our home that aren’t our style, either out of obligation or because they had sentimental value? That’s where I was with the large floral rug that used to live in our Living Room. I inherited it from my grandparents, and since I love(d) them, I had a hard time admitting I didn’t love their rug. But I
kept it…because who tosses a perfectly good, free rug that comes with
sentimental value?! And worse, who replaces a really expensive rug with a
much cheaper rug?

Well, turns out…this girl. You guys encouraged me to embrace their memories, not their stuff…so I finally rolled that baby up and replaced it with something much more my style.
I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t hem and haw, and then hem some more, about
the kind of rug I wanted to put in it’s place. In the end, though, I
went with the one I’ve been drawn to for years.

Hi Sugarplum | Moroccan Rug

Hi Sugarplum | Moroccan Rug

I think I looked at every Moroccan rug available online, but since this room requires a whooping 9’x12′, I waited for a Rugs USA mega-sale, then ordered the Tuscan Moroccan Shag in ivory. Free shipping and no tax is always a selling point for me, too!

Hi Sugarplum | Moroccan Rug

We’ve had the rug well over a month, and could not be happier with it. Not only did it completely transform the room by brightening the space and neutralizing the floor, but it is beyond soft and cozy to walk and lounge on. This rug is so thick, you could seriously lose small children in the pile. It’s definitely more of a shag carpet than a flat-woven rug.

Hi Sugarplum | Moroccan Rug

There were a fair amount of fuzz balls floating around the first few weeks, but after several vacuums, the shedding has almost stopped.

The rug adds just a touch of texture and pattern, but is no longer the focus of the room. It makes the perfect neutral backdrop for our colorful decor.

How about some Before & After action?

Hi Sugarplum | Moroccan Rug

Hi Sugarplum | Moroccan Rug

Before storing away the floral rug, we tried it out in our Pink Dining Room (Mr. Sugarplum was thrilled with that exercise #sarcasmfont), but it was too big. I’m going to hang on to it for now though, because it really is a lovely rug. But without it, the room finally feels like us, and we’re so much happier with the space.

I can’t believe it took me four years to let go of the unnecessary pressure I was putting on myself to make the rug work. Now if I could just have the same clarity about my grandfather’s 5-foot ship currently perched on top of the piano. What are you needlessly hanging on to? Are you a fan of the Moroccan rug?

  6. Just beautiful Cassie! How does Maggie do with the rug? I have a hutch the my grandpa built. I will never let that thing go!

    Posted 6.2.14 Reply
    • She loved on it for the first few weeks, now she's indifferent to it. She has her own bed and space, and mostly sticks with that!

  7. This looks so, so super great! I just want to sink my toes into that rug. 🙂 I'm on a Moroccan kick because we just got back from Morocco last month. I wanted to buy just about everything I saw, but quickly realized that I could get many of the same items here in the states for much cheaper! The one thing I did stock up on was argon oil! 🙂

I have been eyeing that rug on RugsUSA , too, and LOVE it in your room!! I am also curious how Maggie does with it – I have a Chocolate Labrador Retriever, which is why I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on a mostly white rug. Does she shed? Is she allowed in the living room? Thanks for always giving us great ideas 🙂

    Posted 6.2.14 Reply
    • Maggie doesn't shed much, and I've yet to see any evidence of it on the rug. It vacuums pretty easily, so that's a bonus. She's allowed in every room, but not on the furniture. 😉

  27. Oh, I Love the new rug and I think it looks fabulous in your living room! Quick question, do you notice it gets matted at all? I had a really soft fluffy rug like that in my son's room and it got so matted I had to trash it after a year or so. I've always loved this rug, but have been hesitant to purchase it after my previous rug issue.

    Posted 6.2.14 Reply
    • Hi Katie! We've had the rug a little over a month, and we've seen no signs of matting. It's not in a room with real heavy traffic, so hopefully that will help. I'll be devastated if I have to give this one up! xo

  29. I get having to hang on to something because it was passed down, but the new rug seems so much more like "you":)

This style rug has become one of my favorites. I had a client buy one similar for her den. It's going to become a new classic I'm predicting.

  30. I love it! I suspect if I got a rug like this in my house I would roll around on it like a puppy. Pretty much all the time. Seriously though – looks wonderful. So "you" and just perfect with all your other beautiful things!

That rug is made for your room! It really looks beautiful in there Cassie. Your home has so much personality. I love that is truly reflects you. I am the same way with sentimental things. I have a chair of my Grandmothers that I cannot part with. It doesn't quite fit the style of our house but I love it.

  37. Good choice on moving the rug and keeping the memories. The room looks so calm and peaceful. Its a classic rug and I bet it'll look even better in the winter time and make things feel cozier.

  40. I have been eyeing a very similar rug for some time. Seeing how AMAZING it looks in your living room may just give me the push I need to order it. My only concern is keeping it clean! We have a white rug in my daughters room and you can see it's starting to get dirty. How do you clean a rug that large?!

  41. I do love the floral rug, but the new rug is perfect in there. It's crazy how much I notice in that room now. Stuff that's even in the before pictures that I just didn't see until now. Such a beautiful room!

    • It is a bright pillow party!! The black and white are from Ikea, and basically the best pillows ever. I challenge you to find a spot they don't look good in! The suzani I ordered from OKL last year, the pink and citrine are from Target's Liberty of London collection ages ago…I just flipped the pillows to show the back side, and finally, the needlepoint is from PB Teen! xo

  45. Ok, this is the first time I've commented. I've browsed your blog for a couple of years and, well, I never could figure out that floral rug! It just didn't seem to fit with the rest of your style (which I love!). What a difference that new rug makes!! It's the one I'd love for my front room 🙂

  48. I bought this same rug in early December and it is still shedding like crazy. It travels all over the house. Is there an end? Or do I have a defective rug? You can't even sit on the rug without it getting all over you. So disappointed.

    Posted 2.29.16 Reply
    • Okay — so I've had this rug for awhile…and never had any problems with it! Barely any shedding. Then we moved, and we put the rug in our main area…it started shedding so bad it almost made me crazy!! I was sweeping twice a day!? I have no idea why the change, but I finally had to move the rug upstairs (so it doesn't get as much traffic, and I can't see the shedding on the carpet!) I'm sorry you're having similar problems, but since you haven't had it long, I'd def take it up with the vendor!! Good luck!

    • I'm so happy you wrote me back. Good and bad to know you are in a similar situation. My husband keeps threatening to take it to the curb:)
I called rugs USA and they said I should contact a professional rug cleaner to help, check my vaccum settings, and know that it could take 3 months for it to stop. An interesting conversation…Anyway, I love your blog and style! You have such a passion for what you do:)
