Embracing the Cold

First up, thanks so much for your love on our new GxHSP top yesterday! I can’t wait to see y’all styling your new spring style… and for more spring fun that’s just around the corner (#hinthint).

Dallas likes to say we enjoy all four seasons, but in reality, our winters typically only last a couple of months… and even those are peppered with sunny, 60-degree days.

So winter blues aren’t usually something we deal with (summer is a whole other story!). But after the last week of sub-zero temps, I can see how that would start to wear on you. Not to mention, the many months of working and schooling from home before the cold weather set in!

A real snowfall is rare around here, so we did what every Texan did… raced outside to enjoy it while it lasted! And never have I been more grateful for our collection of cold weather gear from Backcountry, much of it we grabbed during their Winter Yard Sale, going on now, with gear and apparel up to 50% off!

Puffer Coat (under $40!) | Zip-Up Fleece Jacket (39% off!) | High Waisted Leggings | Lace-Up Boots (25% off!) | Beanie (up to 25% off!) | Backpack (up to 39% off!) | Water Bottle

Growing up, it wasn’t uncommon to see kids playing in the snow with socks on their hands, three layers of coats, and soaking wet sneakers! We had a ball, but we never lasted long, with frequent trips inside to get warm and dry.

The Scandinavians actually have a saying that I can now vouch for!

‘There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!’

I’ve gathered some great cold-weather gear in recent years (like this coat and these pullovers), but these boots were a new addition just before the storm, and WOWZA did they make a difference!

They’re not only comfy and warm (thanks to a furry lining), but water-resistant with serious tread that kept me from slipping! Definitely an upgrade from my old canvas sneakers, ha!

Fit Tip: I sized up half.

This puffer is perfect for mild Texas winters, with its lightweight and tall neck. But what it lacks in warmth, it more than makes up for in style and cuteness! And can you believe it’s under $40?!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small, but I don’t think it’s necessary to size up

These high-waisted leggings are thick and warm, with an airbrush finish that smooths all the lumps and provides great support.

Fit Tip: True to size, I’m wearing an XS

We thought it was cold the day we took these photos, but we had no idea what was coming!

It’s hard to believe this was just one week later! In head-to-toe Backcountry, no less!

How are you weathering this winter? Hanging in there, or ready for warmer days? What are your cold-weather must haves? We aren’t exactly experts in it down here, but fortunately Backcountry’s Gearheads are, and we turn to their free service every time we embark on a new outdoor adventure.

Now is a great time to stock up, with gear and apparel up to 50% off in their huge annual Winter Yard Sale! And as always, code SUGARPLUM15 saves you 15% off your first full price order (exclusions apply). And now through February 25th, take an additional 20% off during checkout on select Backcountry and Stoic casual fleeces, insulation, and snow outerwear!

In Ottawa, Canada, winters are not easy (cold, humid, lots of snow (about 7 feet worth a year). I personally hate the cold (I know, bad Canadian) and am a summer girl through and through (our summers are actually really warm (we’re in a valley near a large river so humid and hot generally and I love every minute of it)). So for me, I’ve long given up on the cute and stylish in favour of the sturdy, heavy winter gear. We often get sudden and rapid changes in weather (might be -6C one day and then the next, -37C (couldn’t bother converting to F but let’s just say that water freezes at 0 C) so it’s very important to look up the weather report every morning before you head out the door. So we have a mix of heavy winter parkas (I have a Marmotte brand parka, Canada Goose and Point Zero (all Canadian brands I think)) and some light more dressy coats for work. I have high calf snow boots (Merrell brand) that are very warm and waterproof. And you’re right…….when you get snow dumps several days or weeks in a row and your winter lasts 5 months…..it gets old, real fast!

That’s why we retired to the West Coast. Our winters are temperate, we rarely get snow and our temps are usually Above 0 c or 32F. We learned very quickly that in order to get out and enjoy winter we needed good rain gear. I agree with the Scandinavian saying There is no bad weather just bad clothes.

I usually love your posts and I am older than your mother, but apparently, according to your Dallas didn’t have the disaster than we in Houston experienced with the tremendous property damage, deaths, disruption of medical services, etc. etc. I have seen you do very heartfelt posts. I am not sure “Embracing the Cold” (?) was one of them?
    Stay safe.

Thanks for your feedback, Holly. I think it’s safe to say that the entire state of Texas experienced this weather disaster pretty equally, and no one I know came out unscathed. We were without power for several days, and a week later we’re still waiting for water throughout the house. Definitely all manageable compared to so many others, but staying positive helps me navigate hard times, and that’s exactly what I’m doing, and what my intention was with this post (plus to share the great sale!). Prayers for you and your family as you navigate this aftermath. xo, Cassie

Living in Pennsylvania, our winters have ranged from feet and feet of snow some years to mid-50’s some years. This year has been particularly rough. I’m not a fan of winter on a good year, but being forced to stay home and not do some of my winter-blues-busters (going to the theater, visiting friends, even just shopping at the outlets on a nice day) has been really challenging. We’ve been getting hit with snow and ice nearly every few days. Living in an urban area, they never take care of the roads well which means it’s truly dangerous. I’m so ready for spring and summer!
