Dressing Room Diaries

Happy Friday, friends, and cheers to the holiday weekend! I’m particularly excited because our son surprised us with a last-minute visit over the break! Apparently he ‘needs a few things,’ but I think he was craving a night in his own bed! And maybe a few hugs!

Hopefully goodbyes aren’t too hard after these mini-visits…I don’t think my heart is ready for that emotion again! But I miss his sweet face so much, it’s worth it just to see him. Exquisite pain. Devastating joy. This transitioning to college experience has been chock-full of oxymorons!

Today I’m excited to share a new Dressing Room Diaries with Mama Sugarplum, and it’s a GOOD one. New seasonal pieces are really rolling in now, and the retailers are bringing their A-games! Plus, thanks to the holiday, there’s also a lot on sale. (See the end of this post for my sale round-up.) I looked for pieces suitable for the transitional season ahead.

You know the drill with Dressing Room Diaries…I hunt down some of the cutest items from my favorite retailers, and review them for you. As usual, the shots aren’t good, the lighting is bad, and I’m in desperate need of a hairbrush. But it’s real life, real girl, real clothes…and hopefully helpful for you to see them this way, instead of perfectly styled on a model. So let’s get started!

Fit Note: I’m 5’4″-ish, 120 pounds-ish (depending on the week’s taco count), with a slight pear shape. My usual size is XS/0. Mama Sugarplum is 5’1″, with an hourglass figure, and her usual size is XS/2p.

 

TOPS & TEES //

Mama Sugarplum and I both walked immediately to this fun tank…the embroidery and poms were calling our name! It’s soft cotton with a slightly a-line shape and longer length.

Oh, and you’ll likely notice I’m wearing the same jeans in virtually every picture…I’m obsessed! They are soft and super stretchy with a mid-rise, no distressing, and the cutest little kick at the hem. They’re perfect for sandals and flats for transitional season. And they’re on sale…find them here!! I’m wearing a regular 2, and they’re a little loose.

I love a good graphic tee for wearing by itself and especially layered under blazers. But I’m very picky about them…they can’t be cheesy or too busy, and must have the perfect fit. And I hit the jackpot with them this month! This was my fave, not only do I love the saying, but I love how it’s discreetly tucked on the pocket. The tee is crazy soft and stretchy, too.

This softer-than-soft pullover top is in my Top Faves of all time, and I’m thrilled to see they brought it back! It feels like your favorite loungewear, but has a relaxed sexy style about it. It’s a brushed fleece with good drape, and a medium weight. The curved hem makes it cute worn out or tucked.

SHIRTS & BLOUSES //

My mom visibly swooned at these tops…she looooves a Peter Pan collar! I have to admit, it made me cringe as a kid, but I love them now. Especially paired with a graphic black and white. These are beautiful with trousers or pencil skirts, and darling peeking out from under a blazer.

Little Miss Preppy!! So cute in this gingham top with side button detail. She picked up this lightweight cotton cardigan for an extra layer over her sleeveless styles.

Leopard is absolutely everywhere this season, and I couldn’t be happier. It’s been my favorite neutral for years, and I love it in big or small doses for most any outfit. This leopard shell is silky with the perfect shades of brown and black, and sassy worn alone for date night, or classic with trousers or under a blazer for work. Definitely a classic piece you’ll wear for years!

More leopard, but this one with shades of black and gray. This shell is lightweight with a longer length, and completely bra-friendly. It comes in tons of colors and patterns, and is cute worn alone, or the perfect layer under blazers and jackets.

I told you leopard was everywhere! So smitten with this long-sleeve version…it’s classic, yet sassy. A lightweight silky top with roll-tab sleeves, you can button it up for work, or let a little loose for a night out.

CARDIGANS & BLAZERS //

Lightweight cardigans and jackets are the perfect transitional pieces, and so easy to throw over our fave Summer tees and tops once the weather starts to cool. This cardigan has a relaxed boyfriend fit, and is super-soft and stretchy. It’s a shorter length, and would be cute with pencils skirts and trousers, too. It’s on sale, plus an extra 20% off!

This blazer is hands-down my favorite! I adore the fit and notch collar, and since it’s a cotton knit, it’s also super comfortable. It’s really thick with a cute contrasting liner, that’s a fun peek of pattern if you cuff the sleeves. I have it in white and wear it non-stop. I want to add another color, but can’t choose between the gray or black!

PANTS //

I put these sassy pants on the moment they arrived, and didn’t take them off all day! They’re crazy cute, and so comfy! A lightweight crepe material that moves and flows, with a belted waist and wide legs. They come in several fun colors and patterns, but these green leopard called to me.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a petite XS, but they’re almost too short in the stride.

I love a good denim skirt, but finding a good one is not easy! Most are too short, or too wide in the waist, so I was thrilled to find this one fit like a glove! There are darts on the back that allow for a better fit at the waist, and it falls just above the knee. The back pockets are perfectly-placed to avoid that ‘flat butt’ effect.

These pants are another great option, but in a longer length, with a slightly wider leg. They’re made of a stretchy crepe, so they fit comfortably. The high waist creates a longer leg, too! I paired it with this fun floral and leopard halter top, that’s perfect for work to date night.

I shared these camo pants during the NSale, but needed a different size. I was thrilled to scoop them up, and know I’ll wear them all Fall. I love camo with chambray, black, gray and pink…and of course graphic tees. I like the message of this one, don’t you? Oh, and the pants are 40% off!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular 2 in the pants (they are already cropped, so the petite were too short), and XS tee.

DRESSES //

Okay, clearly I’m having a leopard moment, too! I had no idea I’d selected so much until this post! The dress is thick and stretchy, and hugs the body without being too body-con. It’s less mustardy in person than this image depicts, and has an unexpected touch of pink in it. It would be so chic with a black blazer and pumps.

If you’re looking for something a little sweeter, this polka dot fit-and-flare is a fun option. It has a cute grosgrain ribbon belt attached, and is fully-lined. And 40% off!

I love the navy and green combo of this stretchy shift dress. Wear it with nude heels for work, or keep it casual with sandals. The dark colors make it great for transitional season, too.
