Dressing Room Diaries

Cheers to Friday, friends! We’re officially on Spring Break as of this afternoon, and I couldn’t be more excited! We’re packing up on a family adventure, so be sure to follow on Instagram to see where we land, and peeks of our week. Of course I’ll share full recaps here on the blog in the coming weeks, too. You can check out my Travel tab for previous reports and trip ideas.

Thanks so much for the love on this week’s posts! Spring style played a big role with my Spring Fever favorites, a darling yellow rain jacket several ways, and a recap of February’s top posts. I always love hearing your feedback and comments! (You can sign up for my daily posts and weekly newsletter here…so you never miss a post!)

Today I’ve got a new Dressing Room Diaries with my cute Mama Sugarplum…and you know the drill, I hunt down some of the cutest new arrivals from my favorite retailers, and review them for you. The shots aren’t good, the lighting is bad, my hair is usually past it’s expiration, and many of the items aren’t a good fit for me…but it’s real life, real girl, real clothes…and hopefully helpful for you to see them this way, instead of perfectly styled on a model.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries

Fit Note: I’m 5’4″-ish, 120 pounds-isa (depending on the week’s taco count), with a slight pear shape. My usual size is an XS/0. Mama Sugarplum is 5’1″, with an hourglass figure. We typically wear the same size, but she sometimes goes with petite.

Let’s start with tops this week, and get ready for cuteness overload! This peplum top has the cutest built-in bow with a small seersucker stripe and polka dot pattern. It’s a lightweight, crisp cotton poplin with perfect cap sleeves that aren’t too tight.

Fit Tip: It runs true to size, but if you’re in-between I’d size down. I’m wearing an XS.

Peplum Bow Top | Distressed White Skinnies | Flat Sandals | Earrings

I love feminine details on a top, and this one oozes girlie! The pink gingham, puff shoulders and ruffle trim on both the shoulders and wrists. It’s also lightweight and a crisp cotton, but doesn’t wrinkle easily. It’s cute with white jeans, and tucked into skirts and cropped pants.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Gingham Ruffle Trim Top (40% off!)| Distressed White Skinnies | Flat Sandals | Earrings

Here’s my cutie mom in both tops, she’s wearing XS, as well.

This top has Spring and girlie written all over it! The front is a lightweight sweatshirt material with an eyelet trim, and the back full eyelet! #swoon The shoulders are dropped a bit, giving it a relaxed, almost swing fit. It comes in black and white, but I’m partial to the crisp white…so cute with dark jeans, colored pants, and even white!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Eyelet Trim Sweatshirt |  Distressed White Skinnies | Flat Sandals | Earrings

I shared this layered top last week, but Mom wanted to try it, too…so I’m sharing a close-up again. It’s a light sweatshirt with a built-in layered shirt under that peeks out at the bottom and cute ties at the cuff.

Fit Tip: It’s true to size, I’m in an XS.

Eyelet Trim Sweatshirt  | Layered Look Sweatshirt |  Distressed White Skinnies | Flat Sandals | Earrings | Dark Skinnies | Espadrilles

This silky blouse has a beautiful tall neck, with sash tie in the back, and flattering racerback-style neckline. It’s long enough for full-tucking into skirts and pants, and this blush pink is fully-lined.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a size 2.

Tie Back Blouse | Dark Skinnies | Peep Toe Booties

This peplum tee is pajama-soft and perfectly swingy. It comes in a ton of solid colors and stripes, and looks darling layered under jackets. (See that here.)

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Striped Peplum Tee | Distressed Jeans | Sneakers

Peplum Tee | Distressed White Skinnies | Earrings | Espadrilles | Embroidered JeansWedge Sandal

We’re obviously both smitten for peplum this season!! This sweatshirt top is a little thicker, with an eyelet hem that goes all the way around. Grab it 40% off thanks to a Friends & Family Sale, too (code BRFAMILY).

Fit Tip: We’re both wearing XS, but I’d size up if you’re busty or in-between.

Eyelet Peplum Sweatshirt | Distressed White Skinnies | Wedge Sandal | Earrings | Dark Skinnies | Espadrilles

Stripes and bows…this striped pullover is a cozy winner! It’s super-soft and lightweight, and can be worn out or tucked.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Striped Pullover with Tie Cuffs | JeansPeep Toe Booties

Can you see in her face how much Mama SP loves this tunic shirt? It’s a linen blend with a cute tie-back…and pockets! It’d be cute with white jeans and sandals, too.

Fit Tip: It’s true to size, she’s wearing an XS.

Striped Linen Tunic Top | Dark Skinnies | Espadrilles

More darling pink gingham, this one buttons up the back and has the sweetest little bow on the sleeves. You can roll the tulip-hem sleeves, or wear them down (like the website pic). It’s a lightweight, crisp cotton poplin, and long enough for tucking.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Gingham Button-Back Top | Distressed White Skinnies | Wedge Sandal | Earrings

The gingham pattern is small and subtle on this poplin top with wide, elbow-length sleeves. The built-in tie wrap allows for a custom fit at the waist.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Gingham Bow Front Top | Distressed White Skinnies | Wedge Sandal | Earrings

Mom is wearing an XS in both, as well.

Gingham Button-Back Top | Gingham Bow Front Top | Distressed White Skinnies | Wedge Sandal | Earrings | Dark Skinnies | Espadrilles

I don’t forgo all sweaters and long-sleeves when the weather warms up, I just switch to lighter fabrics like this lightweight cotton blend. It’s soft and super stretchy, and comes in several solid colors…but I’m partial to the stripes with contrasting cuffs.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing XS.

V-Neck PulloverDistressed White Skinnies | Wedge Sandal | Earrings

This ruffle collar sweater is another lightweight favorite for this time of year! The ruffle is what drew me in, but the texture, softness and perfect pink are make me reach for it all the time! (Yep, I kept it and have worn it multiple times already!)

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS, but if you’re in-between or busty, I’d go up one size.

Ruffle Collar Pullover | White Jeans | Leopard Flats

Mom is wearing it in a small…doesn’t she look adorable!? She LOVED these embroidered jeans, too! The colors are so easy to pair this time of year, and the denim is soft and stretchy with a comfortable mid-rise fit.

Fit Tip: She sized up on in the sweater, and is wearing a regular 2 in the jeans (size down if you’re in-between for those).

Ruffle Collar Pullover (30% off!) | Embroidered Jeans | Wedge Sandal

Now let’s move on to dresses…always my favorites! This off-the-shoulder is a thick, chambray material, with a wide elastic band that keeps it both comfortable and in place! The waist is a wide elastic, as well, and the a-line skirt has fun movement. And do I need to mention the pockets and tassel trim?!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 2, but needed a 0…so I’d say it runs a little big for this brand.

Off-the-Shoulder Striped Dress | Wedge Sandal | Shell Tassel Earrings

My go-to racerback dress for last several years is back in a slew of new colors…including this blush with a lavender undertone. It wears great with wedges, heels or flat sandals.

Fit Tip: It’s true to size, I’m in an XS.

Racerback Dress | Colorblock Platform Espadrilles

Okay, next up are some striped dresses I’ve shown you in previous DRDs, but I wanted you to see how versatile they are for all generations. Seriously, my mom looks so chic! Her dress is short-sleeve and a soft jersey knit, perfect for throwing on with sneakers or over a swimsuit. She preferred it with a jacket for an extra layer.

Fit Tip: Size up one in the dress (or two if you’re busty), but the jacket is true. She’s wearing a Medium dress and XS jacket.

Twill Utility Jacket | Striped Long Sleeve Dress | Striped T-Shirt Dress

The red dress is a much thicker cotton, with three-quarter sleeves and longer length. She’d wear it alone with sneakers or wedges, but loves it with the jacket, too. And yep, she loves the camo!

Fit Tip: Size up one in the dress for a less body-con fit, she’s wearing a small.

Twill Utility Jacket | Striped Long Sleeve Dress | Striped T-Shirt Dress

This dress is no stranger to the blog, I’ve been wearing it for years! I consider it the ‘Sisterhood of Travel Pants’ of dresses…it just has a way of looking good on all body types! The ruching conceals through the midsection, the hemline creates a longer silhouette, and it’s just darn sassy! I’ve worn it with heels, sandals and even sneakers. I wear it alone, with a jean jacket, or in the Fall with a long cardigan. See? So versatile!

Fit Tip: I size up for a less body con fit, I’m wearing a small.

Ruched Tank Dress | Earrings

I was surprised by how lovely (and how much I loved!!) this romper! It’s a flowy crepe material, so it hangs and moves beautifully. The flutter sleeves are elbow-length, and the hemline long enough for heels. The lace on the back and large peep-hole opening is unexpected and dresses it up even more. It definitely needs a strapless or stick-on bra. The v-neck does dip quite a bit, so it’s going to be a little revealing if you’re busty.

Fit Tip: I sized up to a small for a flowy fit through the shorts.

Romper

Mama Sugarplum was a little busty for the romper, but loved the ruched dress. She’s wearing a small.

Romper | Ruched Tank Dress

I’ve been on a jumpsuit hunt for some upcoming events, and this one is definitely my favorite find so far. I adore the racerback shape of the arms, and flattering tie belt. The wide legs move beautifully when you walk, and it easily dresses up for work or parties, but looks equally cute with sandals. And it’s 40% off with code BRFAMILY!

Fit Tip: It runs large (and long), I’m wearing a 0P.

Cropped Pantsuit (use code BRFAMILY for 40% off!) | Wedge Sandal | Earrings

These linen pants aren’t typically my style, so I was shocked by how much I loved them!! So soft and easy to wear…darling thrown on with a swimsuit, or a t-shirt and sandals. They have a relaxed crinkled linen feel with adjustable drawstring waist and pockets. And of course you’re no stranger to the scoop neck tee…this is just one of the new colors available this year!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS, but petite sizing is available. The tee is XS.

Striped Scoopneck Tee | Linen Drawstring Pants | Sandals | Earrings

More striped goodness, this one in a darling muscle-style, with v-neck and a front pocket. It’s fitted under the arms, so covers my bra completely. And these jean shorts are the best I’ve found so far this season, especially for the price! If you prefer a longer inseam, I love these, as well.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS tank, but like with this coordinating t-shirt, I prefer to size up one. The shorts are a little relaxed, but I like them like that, so I stick with my usual size, 26.

Striped V-Neck Tank | Cut-offs | Sandals | Earrings

Speaking of cut-offs with a longer inseam, these are definite winners! They’re a soft, opaque denim with a lot of stretch, and a comfy mid-rise. I usually veer away from cuffed shorts, but these are just a single cuff and don’t add any bulk. The t-shirt is super soft, and not all sheer. I like the slightly longer length of it, too. And can we pause to swoon over the striped slides!? (Remember them from yesterday’s Spring Fever post?) They are so stinking cute and have every fun color of Summer, so they’ll go with everything!

Fit Tip: I sized up to a small in the tee, the shorts and slides are true…I’m wearing a 26.

V-Neck T-Shirt | White Cutoff Shorts | Striped Slides | Woven Bag

And finally, I’ll end it with this darling, crisp pajama set. A classic fit with pink piping, and the cutest heart print. I love the little peter pan collar, too!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS, but I’d probably size up. Especially since they’re 100% cotton.
