Beauty Files | Winter’s Heavy Hitters

Hello, friends, and happy weekend!! Or at least, I think it’s the weekend, the last few days have been a blur!

As you know, a record-breaking winter storm hit every single county in Texas this week, and fractured our power grid. We started having rolling outages Sunday night, and by Monday morning the power was off for good. With sub-zero temps, it only took a few hours for the house to drop below 50-degrees.

By Tuesday morning, the pipes were frozen and we woke up to a 38-degree house. It was a bitterly cold, nerve-wracking few days, but it was also beautiful to see how friends and neighbors came together to help any way they could.

The power finally came back on Wednesday, just in time for a pipe to burst! Fortunately it’s over our garage, so there’s no damage to our home. We still don’t have any running water, and won’t know the full extent of the damage until we thaw out, so today feels a little like the calm before the next storm.

We’re confident several pipes have been compromised, and our pool is probably toast, but that’s all just ‘stuff’ that can be repaired. Our friends and families are all safe, and we’re grateful!

I am surprised at how resourceful we became so quickly! We cooked food using headlamps, boiled snow to flush toilets, and insulated ourselves with sleeping bags and down comforters. Not that I want to live like that, but it was nice to know we have a ‘survival’ mode, ha!

Now our focus is on our neighbors and community, and finding ways to continue conserving power and helping others. This article is a great resource if you’re looking to help, too.

Texas may have compacted its winter in one crazy week, but I shifted my skin and haircare routine a few months ago. The dry air outside, and in, is not conducive to good hair days, so I’m constantly looking to add more hydration. I’ve come to rely on a handful of products that restore moisture to my skin and hair!

Face //

I love peels and retinol, but during the coldest months of the year, I focus more on hydration. The best product for my skin is hands-down this Intense Hydrating Mask! I apply it liberally at night, and my skin is plump and hydrated by morning. I’ll add a little No. 9 Face Oil on particularly dry days, and the combo is like a gallon of water for my skin.

I recently discovered these affordable sheet masks, and can not believe how much hydration it delivers!! It’s chock-full of hyaluronic acid, and when used before the Intense Hydrating Mask, my skin positively glows!! (Don’t forget this crazy silicone mask cover to get more out of your sheet masks!)

Sugarplum Tip: Colleen Rothschild is having a Customer Appreciation Sale, with up to $50 off your order. But as always, code SUGARPLUM20 saves you 20%… so try both codes at checkout and see which saves you the most!

I don’t know about you, but my lips are always the first to show the effects of cold! Nothing fights off dry, chapped lips quite like Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask!! I apply every night before bed, and even as a gloss over my lipstick during the day, and my lips are never chapped!

If you do get some rough spots, Fenty Beauty Scrub Stick will clear them up with a single use!

Hair //

Between the cold air outside and the heat blowing inside, my hair quickly turns brittle and staticky without proper care. My dream team of hydration is the Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3 plus Argan Oil Hair Mask! I use them at least once a week, typically twice, and the difference in my hair is dramatic!

I apply Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3 to damp hair for several hours (or even overnight) to repair damage and strengthen my fragile, color-treated hair. After shampooing it out, I follow it up by saturating my hair with the Argan Oil Hair Mask while I shower.

It’s light enough to use on your roots, and doesn’t weigh my hair down or make it oily in the least. My strands are left silky soft and smooth, tangle free, and so much healthier and more manageable. I promise you’ll see a difference after just one use!!

Body //

For everyday use, I adore this body lotion… but when I need to bring out the big guns, Necessaire The Body Lotion wipes out dry, flaky, itchy skin with one application! It absorbs quickly, with absolutely no scent, and leaves no residue on your skin. It really is like a vitamin treatment that leaves my skin feeling hydrated, not just covered in product.

As for hands, nothing I’ve found compares to the actual healing that Kiehl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve provides!! My hands look 10 years younger, and actually feel protected from cold and dryness when I use it. It’s great on feet and heels, too, and I’m obsessed with the scent (it’s a little medicinal with notes of eucalyptus).

These magic products are keeping me from turning full-blown reptilian this winter… plus, they’re a nice self-care treat when I need it most! What products do you swear by for cold, dry winter air? Happy weekend, lovebugs, and continued love and prayers for those impacted by these incredible storms!

Well, SPs, I’m sure there will be questions from others. So very sorry about your – I don’t even know what to call it! Is the Sugar Shack ok? Is the pool a loss? The IG post of your waterfall in the garage was horrific!
Maybe we should all store water & food, just like the govt. recommended years ago. Please keep us posted. Very sorry. : (
I do have to say, when this happens, I always say-could have been worse (piano, kitchen, etc.) And when I lose or break something-oh well, it’s only a material thing, replaceable.
    Ok, back to beauty.

Why is everything you say you use is so expensive that people on a set budget cannot afford?
Why don’t you recommend products that are affordable for those people?

Hey! Just clarifying when you say you add No. 9 oil, you mix it with the intense hydration mask? Thanks Lady!

I’ll just layer it on top of the intense mask on super dry days!! I also like to rub the leftover oil on the ends of my hair. Mr. SP uses the No 9 as his everyday moisturizer, and he HATES moisturizers!

I feel for communities like yours who don’t have the infrastructure for such weather events.
Here in Ottawa, Canada we’re no stranger to harsh winters (we typically get about 7 feet of snow a winter and temperatures as low as -35/-40 C (-31/-40 F?). Our houses are made to withstand such low temperatures and we have snow plows organized by the city to remove excess snow. Honestly the last really bad winter storm that crippled both the provinces of Ontario and Québec was the ice storm of 1998 (I was 11 years old, it was pretty intense, we lost power at our Montreal home and had to go to our “cottage” (a condo) in the mountains down south near the border to Vermont where we had a wood burning fireplace. We got snowed in for two weeks there and ate nothing but peanut butter toast in the mornings and spaghetti and apple pie for the other meals………I still can’t eat both together as a meal to this day ;p But honestly we were pretty lucky over all but it took weeks to get the power back in most households (I mean power lines and power towers literally fell down because of the built up of ice from the freezing rain) Some measures were taken and I believe most of our newer power lines are built below ground to avoid such a catastrophe again). So hopefully you guys get out of this soon and your state puts down measures to avoid such a disaster in the future. Best wishes from up north.

Texas is no Canada, that is for sure! We have lots to learn. Buried power lines… that is brilliant!! Thank you for your thoughts <3 xo,Cassie
