The Guest Room | Makeover Plans

Last week I shared our latest makeover…Little Miss’s room…which was definitely a labor of love! And patience. But now that she’s thrilled with her new space, it’s time to move on to the last bedroom in the house…the guest room! (See the other finished bedrooms here.)

Which has been, until last week, the second saddest room in the house! (My office is the saddest…the place I spend most my time. #insertfaceslap) For three years (THREE YEARS!!), the guest room has been a collection of leftover furniture, piles of boxes, and discarded items that didn’t work elsewhere. And to make it even worse, we’ve had a fair number of guests actually stay in the room!! #insertcringeface

And of course every time someone stayed over I was apologizing profusely for the sad state of the room. I mean, we’re fortunate enough to have a dedicated guest room, it’s time to make something of it!

So the first thing we did was empty it out completely…and now we’re slowly adding things back in.

Iron Beds | Starburst Mirror | Similar Lamp | Similar Coverlets | Similar Shams

I always knew I wanted double twin beds…I just love that style in a room, plus it allows the most flexibility for house guests (non-couples, etc). So when I spotted these iron beds for such an amazing price at The Home Depot (yep, The Home Depot sells furniture! Tons of it!), I scooped them up!

They’re lightweight, but super well-made and easy-to-assemble. They come in four finishes (these are black), and have a nice, tall headboard and footboard, so they’re visually substantial in the room. Perfect considering the small room won’t fit much furniture!

For now, I placed an existing tray table, lamp, and mirror to make it more functional, and the white bedding makes a great base for any design direction.

Striped Ruffle Tee | Frayed Hem Jeans | Ring Set

I’m still playing with the design, but after a summer of beach trips, I’ve got ‘Coastal Vibes’ on my mind! They’re soothing and gender-neutral, too, which is perfect for guest rooms. This moodboard shows the feeling I’m going for in the guest room.

It’s just the beginning, but I think we’re off to a great start! Obviously we need drapes, lighting (did you notice the ceiling light?!?), paint, rug, bedding…I’ll be sure to keep you updated as we add new things!

Do you have a neglected room in your house? This is our first dedicated guest room…do you have any tips?

  1. This is beyond gorgeous, Cassie! Any guest would be lucky to stay in this room. It’s so much nicer than a lot of hotels I’ve stayed at! 🙂 ❤️

Love the room! Where did you get the striped blankets at the foot of the beds? They look like Egyptian towels. Could they be? Thank you.

Love everything you picked out for this bedroom. If you had to add curtains, what would you go with? I am redoing my MBR right now and am having issues tiding in the curtains, for color and style. Any help would be appreciated.

I think it depends on the bedding…and possible wallpaper!!! 🙂 I’ll decide on all three together so they’re cohesive.

I enjoy having overnight guests too! I’ve added a full-length mirror attached behind the door, a small bookshelf, and a pouf where I leave a tray with sparkling water, snacks, cocktail napkins, etc. Oh how much fun you will have decorating this guest room. Looking forward to the results. You have the best taste!

One thing I like to do in a guest room is to put two pillows on every bed–one feather and one foam. I also think it is nice to have a bench or a luggage rack for their bag in case they don’t want to totally unpack. Finally, I try to provide several hangers in the closet. Both regular and skirt/pant hangers. All of this, and things like extra toothpaste and a hairdryer, etc. are nice to provide as well.

I’m currently writing this in my guest room / office … wishing I had an extra bedroom just for guests. I’d suggest dark out curtains. I just finally added a set to our bedroom (the blinds alone just weren’t doing the job) and am amazed at the difference. Plus they dress up the room. I bought neutral color curtains and hung them about 6 ” above the window just to draw the eye up a bit. With your love of color and tassels, you could add a fun trim along the inner edge (I’m picturing blue tassels).

Will you just push the beds together if you do have a couple staying? Or is it the plan to just leave the beds separate?

I was just stopping by to ask the same question! I love the idea for guests that aren’t a couple but was curious about what you do for couples. Gorgeous room / mood board!

No, I’ll leave them separated…I figure couples can sleep in separate beds for a night or two. Heck, some might enjoy their own space! 😉

This room is so serene and peaceful. I’d leave it as it is. The total black out curtains would be the best tip. You could even use them as liners and add a layer of fabric/pattern of your choice over them.
And does Home Depot ever have furniture! Great site.
Thanks for all the fun this summer, C!

Oh, and if you see a bed linen color/pattern you really love, a flat sheet makes a great curtain panel over the dark out panels. All edges are finished so it’s easy!

Even better- use dark out roller blinds (inside mount) behind the blinds you have now. Then put up your rod and curtain panels, dark out lining or not. This should give you a nice dark room.

I love your guest room as is but also love the coastal direction you are taking it in too! Excited to see the transformation.

One question….is that a black box spring cover? I love how cleanlined it is. Where did you purchase it?

    Thanks

I am scrolling comments for the same question! This room is gorgeous and love that it looks so clean with the box springs covered with no need for a dust ruffle or bed skirt! Looks so classy! Where did you get them or how did you cover them??

The box springs themselves are actually black! I bought covers for them, but kind of like the black! At least for now anyway, we’ll see once the design starts to come together! Here’s the link to the mattress/box springs set: http://bit.ly/2w1Lmzc

You should sleep a night in there to see what works and what’s missing. That’s always the best tip for figuring out a guest room.
I love twin beds in a room too. I’d recommend lights that can be angled so each person can use a bedside light independently of the other. Wifi password (I see tons on Pinterest in a cute frame). Instructions for things like the shower or coffee maker. Perhaps a coffee machine so they can make an early morning cup without disturbing anyone. Books, blankets, pillow mix as another person said.

This will be a great guest room when you are finished. Everyone will want to see which tips you incorporate. I had a guest room which didn’t have it’s own bath so I put 2 towel racks on the back of the door. I coordinated the towels with the rest of the room. After my sister-in-law stayed with us she did the same thing at their summer cottage. Have fun with the rest of the decorating.

It looks beautiful! I am a light sleeper, and most houses have their own unique “noises” that keep me awake. I really appreciate it when there is a small fan available to plug in for some white noise. And blackout curtains are a necessity in every bedroom 🙂
