Spring Style | Statement Skirt 3 Ways

Happy hump day, friends! Does anyone still say that? We’re on the tail end of our family trip to Exuma, and I’m already regretting not booking the full week! However, this is the kind of place where no amount of time is ever enough anyway. I can not wait to share all the details of our Spring Break with you soon…it’s been an amazing family adventure! (See the full story saved in my Instagram profile.)

It may not officially be Spring yet, but it’s time to start talking Spring fashion! Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing a ton of new warmer weather styles, and hope they inspire you for the new season. And we’re kicking it off today with a punchy statement skirt!

Statement pieces don’t have to sit in your closet waiting for the ‘perfect’ occasion, they can absolutely be mixed in to your everyday wardrobe! After all, why save the most fun pieces for only special occasions!? Especially if it’s something that makes you feel good and happy. #fashionisfun

Look One // Graphic Tee & Jean Jacket

The easiest way to tone down the impact of a statement piece or pattern is a jean jacket! It instantly grounds the pattern and adds a neutral, solid balance. I adore the fit and wash of this jean jacket…tons of stretch and a slight cropped length, perfect for skirts and dresses.

I layered a graphic tee under the jacket for a bit of extra personality, but you could easily with with solid white (or a number of solid colors!).

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS jacket and tee.

A neutral shoe elongates the leg, and the flat sandal makes the outfit feel more casual. It also makes it comfy…who says you can’t run mom duty in a palm print pencil skirt!?

You know I’m a fan of palm (as evidenced by our Gibson x Hi Sugarplum Resort Collection!), so this skirt was instant attraction for me. The colors and pattern are perfection, and I love the slim pencil fit, with fun (removable) belt.

Fit Tip: This skirt is a sturdy cotton that gives a stretches a little over time, so I’d recommend sizing down. I’m wearing a regular 0, but need to size down.

Look Two // Gingham & Palm

Probably the most ‘extra’ of the three combos…I adore the gingham and palm print together! The addition of the second print makes the entire outfit shine, not just the skirt.

It works because the scale of the two prints are completely varying sizes. For instance, I wouldn’t pair a large buffalo check gingham with this skirt, but the smaller gingham balances the large palm.

You could keep the accessories neutral, but I took it one step further with a tortoise earring and fun bag.

Look Three  // Stripes & Palm

And finally, stripes are always a good idea and easy to pattern mix! But just as with the gingham, these patterns work together because the stripe is smaller (closer together). A wide stripe might be a trickier combo with the large palm (I’d have to see it to be sure!)

I treat stripes like a solid in most cases, and love this bold green with pink, green, navy, white, gray and even yellow. Pink and green is one of my favorite preppy combos, and I took it all the way with pink earrings and lips.

This skirt can be worn with and without the belt, and tied any number of ways. It’s an amazing piece for Spring that makes a statement, but is also incredibly versatile. Wear it to work, weekends, and parties!

P.S. It comes in two great solid colors, if palm isn’t your jam!

So which combination is more your style…one, two, or three? Do you save statement pieces, or wear them for every day? I hope I’ve encouraged you to look at them a little differently!

#1 is my favorite. I like #2 on you but I’m not that adventurous with pattern mixing. Not loving #3, nothing pulls it together, but you look great in all three.

Oh, this palm skirt!!! So incredibly fresh w/the pink striped T. Would love to see Mama SP in that look. I want! Thinking a navy or even a black simple short sleeve T (w/a statement necklace?) would work too. This skirt has some high mileage appeal! Perfect – bucket – tote. Cassie=best dressed mom on errands. : )
Who hasn’t regretted booking a few extra nights on a trip like this? Just hang on the beach before leaving, ok? Ha,ha.
    Stay zen-like.

I love the skirt, I asked you for a reference the other day in IG. Now I’m almost certain it’s just what I need for spring – as in look n.3, my favourite – but I need size advice. I’m a UK 8, French 38 size. Would you go for the 4 ? I’ve never ordered clothes in the Us before and could use your help if you know. Thanks

Hi Emilie! I’m not good at converting sizes, but this skirt does run a little big (the cotton gives a little over time), so I’d recommend sizing down one from your usual.
