Spring Ski Essentials for On & Off the Mountain

*This post created in collaboration with Backcountry and ShopStyle Collective, but all product selections, opinions, and aversion to cold are my own. Thank you for supporting Hi Sugarplum sponsors!*

Hello, March!! I know we still have several weeks of cold and fickle temps, but we’re definitely on the downslope of winter, and spring is coming, baby!! And with it comes Spring Break, Daylight Savings Time, Mother’s Day, and the homestretch of school! Just thinking about it all gives me an extra pep in my step!

We usually alternate between mountains and beach for Spring Break… and this year we’re headed somewhere warm. Any guesses where?

If we were headed for the slopes, the first thing I’d do is call the Gearheads at Backcountry for advice (it’s free, after all!). It’s always my first call for all things outdoor adventure. You just tell them where you’re going, the predicted weather conditions, and pieces you already own… from there, they make recommendations for everything else, in several price points (because ski stuff isn’t cheap!!)… saving you so much time and stress.

I know many of you are headed to the mountains for Spring Break this year, so I thought I’d share my ski essentials for both on and off the mountain, and hope it’s helpful for your own trip planning! I even included an easy packing checklist. And thanks to Backcountry’s huge Season Send-Off Sale, many of the big brands are up to 50% off!

We always rent our gear, but if you’re a serious skier and want to invest in your own, Backcountry has literally everything you need for the slopes…from skis and boots, to helmets and poles.

For me, it’s all about good base layers like thermal leggings and a top, comfortable pants, and a non-bulky shell jacket. I prefer longer jackets, too, that cover the bum when you’re sitting on the lift!

I found this jacket, which is perfect for Spring skiing, that’s not only super functional and cute, but on sale, too! It’s nice and warm without being bulky, has a large hood for fitting over your helmet, and lots of pockets for snacks, hand warmers, and more. It’s also waterproof and has extra security to keep cold and snow out.

Add a fleece layer and you’re covered no matter the temps!

Fit Tip: I size up in ski gear for layering… the jacket and fleece are both smalls.

Off the mountain, I typically wear fleece lined leggings or my ski pants to stay warm and dry… but pairing them with a cute and colorful pullover gives it all a bit more style. I found several new options at Backcountry, and all under $80! I’m wearing a small in each, and they’re as warm and soft as they are cute!

Here’s a handy checklist to make sure you pack the essentials for everyone! The one place I never skimp is wool socks (get the tall ones so they add comfort and protection from your boots) and gloves! I prefer mittens so I can wiggle my fingers, and like them to come up over my jacket sleeves.

what to wear on a ski holiday
Base Layer: Thermal Top // Thermal Leggings // Wool Socks // Fleece Pullover
Outer Layer: Insulated Jacket // Waterproof Pants // Wool Skull Cap // Mittens
Extras: Snow Boots (More HERE) // Gaiter // Helmet // UV Goggles

No matter how gorgeous the mountain or perfect the snow, how much fun you have is completely dependent on being warm and dry! I can’t recommend Backcountry and their Gearheads enough for dressing for any and all outdoor activities… especially skiing!

Now is a great time to get the gear you need for less, thanks to their huge Winter Clearance Sale, with up to 60% off the biggest brands! And don’t forget, save 15% on your first order with code SUGARPLUM15 (some exclusions apply).

Do you have any dressing or packing tips to add for snow and ski days? What’s your winning layering formula? And even more fun, what are your Spring Break plans?
