{Review & Giveaway} Honeywell Voice-Activated Wifi Thermostat

I can’t thank you guys enough for all your kind and thoughtful comments on yesterday’s sap-fest! You are the reason I love this blog and community so much.  It’s amazing, and a little sad, that so many of us share similar stories. Thank you for welcoming me outside my comfort zone. Let’s get back to home stuff now, shall we?!

There were a lot of fun presents opened at our house last month, but the one that’s getting the most on-going attention is the talking box on the wall. That probably demands a little more explanation, right?

Honeywell contacted me several months ago to tell me about their smart little wizard…aka, their new Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat with Voice Control. I’m always interested in new technology, especially if it’s going to lower my bills and reduce the bickering over who who forgot to adjust the thermostat.

But while we were excited to receive the new gadget, I was nervous about the ‘Simple Setup.’ Our existing unit wasn’t exactly cutting-edge. I was also concerned that all the fancy bells and whistles would make it too complicated for us to actually use! (We’re simple folk.)

Hi Sugarplum | Honeywell Wifi Thermostat

When it arrived, I actually tucked it away for a few days, waiting for the right time to sweet-talk Mr. Sugarplum into helping me install it…aka, install it for me. Turns out all my anxieties were unfounded…it really was quite simple to install! The old box pops off, then you re-attach the new panel to the existing wires.

Hi Sugarplum | Honeywell Wifi Thermostat

We had a bit of a hiccup (and mini-panic attack) since our system is so dated, but the Honeywell website walked us through the steps that matched our scenario in easy-to-follow videos.

Hi Sugarplum | Honeywell Wifi Thermostat

Once we powered it back on, the Honeywell did all the work for us! The touch-screen display asks you a series of questions like,

“What time does the first person wake up?”
“What time does the last person leave in the morning?”
“What time does the first person come home?”
“Are there days when someone is home all day?”

Based on your answers to these and other questions, the Honeywell programs the thermostat for you! If you want to stray from the programming, you can do that manually, or just tell it! That seems to be everyone’s favorite part…once you say, ‘Hello, Thermostat,’ she starts talking to you and asking what you need.

You can be vague like, ‘make it cooler’ or specific like ‘warm the house 2-degrees.’ She’s quite lovely and agreeable. However, I haven’t convinced her to start cooking dinner for us, too. My son already downloaded the free app to my phone, so we can also make adjustments from anywhere in the world! I guess there’s a reason The Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat with Voice Control was named Best New Product of 2013

You can also adjust the background color…so of course ours is currently pink.

Hi Sugarplum | Honeywell Wifi Thermostat
Our old unit was larger, let’s pretend we patched and painted the wall for this review, shall we?!

Okay, how about we get to the good stuff for you?! Want to win your own wi-fi thermostat that listens, learns, saves. The Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat with Voice Control?!

Just hop on the Rafflecopter and do your thing, and one of you lucky ducks will be bossing the box on your wall in no time!

  10. Is it just me, or with all the NSA spying and Google/Facebook/credit-card data-gathering going on today, adding another gadget that somebody else can (and let's be honest, probably is) gather all the data and target me and my family in all kinds of new and invasive ways just not what I'm looking for? I am becoming that which I made fun of for so many years, time to go put on my tinfoil cloche (beanies are SO 2000).

Our family just got the Nest for Christmas. Similar to the Honeywell, but no voice command. I do love that the thermostat has an app. Now I can adjust the thermostat without getting off the couch or out of bed. I would love to get one of these for my parents or my mother-in-law. If the Nest has treated me so well, I would imagine the Honeywell if just as cool.
