Pack It | What’s In My Travel Beauty Bag

Oh thank you, thank you for your feedback on the dresses! I loved hearing what you thought of each of them, and I can’t wait to get dolled-up on the ship. You know I’ll make ask Mr. SP to take pictures so I can share the winning dress (or shall I say, dresses??) with y’all when I get back! #oversharer

So now that I’ve got most of my wardrobe worked out, it’s time to focus on packing my hair and beauty essentials.

Hi Sugarplum | In My Travel Beauty Bag

I’ve got a pretty basic routine at home, but it’s even more simplified when I travel…especially if I’m traveling with Mr. SP. He actually prefers me au natural. (Except the lips…I’ve always got my lips on!)

Hi Sugarplum | Sugarplum Style

You know I’m pretty firm with sticking to a single (preferably carry-on sized) bag, so I pare down my daily makeup, skincare, and hair products to fit in one toiletry bag. You may recognize several of them from my Favorite Beauty Products post.

Hi Sugarplum | In My Travel Beauty Bag

Hi Sugarplum | In My Travel Beauty Bag

I discovered this product last year, and it’s hands-down my can’t-live-without makeup. It doubles as my foundation and sunscreen…one little pump color-corrects and brightens (dare I say, illuminates!) my entire face. I even skip concealer on vacation, and add a little more of this under my eyes.
It’s a 10 Miracle Styling Serum
I don’t wash my hair daily, but it does take a lot of abuse from styling tools (see my hair tutorial here), so I keep the product I use on it to a minimal. I add a few pumps of this to damp hair, and it works as a mild de-tangler and heat protector, then another pump seals the ends once my hair is dry and styled. I also pack a sample size of my favorite hairspray, but I forgot to include it in the pic!

Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara
I’m a drugstore mascara junkie, but I keep going back to this one. I’ve even had friends ask if I have lash extensions when I’m wearing it (I don’t). But if you follow me on Snapchat (cassiesugarplum), then you saw me getting my lashes dyed last week. It’s my favorite Summer beauty indulgence because it allows me to skip eyeliner and mascara, which is great for days at the pool or beach. Or even just waking up next to your Sugarplum!

Lash Curler
No particular brand preference, I just always use one!

Nars Blush in ‘Amour’
The makeup artist used this color on me for the Redbook photoshoot, so I’ve stuck with it ever since. It looks like a natural flush, and lasts all day.

Revlon Colorstay Eyeliner in ‘Charcoal’
Another drugstore favorite, mostly because it’s cheap and stays on all day. I skip eyeshadow
when I travel, and just use more eyeliner for a nighttime smoky eye.

Nars Satin Lip Pencil in ‘Yu’
Another one from the Redbook photoshoot and it’s the perfect bright pink…not too blue or yellow, and softer than a red. If I’m going to be wearing sunglasses all day, I’ll just stick with the CC Cream, and use this on my cheeks and lips.

Hi Sugarplum | In My Travel Beauty Bag

One thing I don’t change when I travel, is my skincare routine. Flying, sleep disruptions, and overindulging are hard enough on my skin, so I don’t want to add to it by changing cleanser and moisturizer, too.

I was introduced to this product last year (by Colleen herself, who happens to be a Dallas-girl!), and quickly fell for the amazing smell, and how silky it made my skin feel. At first, I was apprehensive about an oil (because aren’t we trying to avoid oily skin??!!), but it’s very light, and absorbs quickly. And actually retrains your skin to not over-produce it’s own oil!
Even Mr. SP, the moisturizer-phobe, reaches for it now. I use it in the morning under the CC Cream, and it makes a flawless base. It’s also great for travel, because it multi-purposes as my cuticle oil, chapstick, and even calms frizzy hair.
Tip: I think I wasted half of my first bottle because I was squirting it on my fingertips, and it would run down my hands and require several pumps to cover my entire face. When actually, a single pump in the palm of your hand is all it takes! #blonde
I have crazy dry skin, so I need serious moisturizer. I coat my face with this every night, and when I fly. Sometimes I’ll double-down and add a squirt of the Face Oil No. 9 to it, too, for a serious moisturizing cocktail.
Once I fell in love with the Face Oil, I started trying more and more of Colleen’s products, until now they make up most of my skincare routine. This cleansing balm is like nothing I’ve used before…you rub in on your face dry, then wipe it clean with a damp cloth. My skin is left makeup-free and completely clean, but not feeling tight. I had my first facial in over a year this past weekend, and the aesthetician actually commented on how clear my skin was! #thatsneverhappened
All these products, plus my toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, hair ties, and mini bottles of shampoo and conditioner, pack away in my single cosmetic case. (You’re not really surprised it’s monogrammed, are you?!) This compact case packs easily in my suitcase, and helps keep the bathroom tidy…which is key for small European or ship bathrooms!

Sugarplum Tip: To be safe, I put liquid products and serums (like the face oil, samples of perfume, etc) in individual small ziploc bags within the cosmetic case. That way if one leaks or explodes, it’s contained and not destroying everything, including my cute bag.

Hi Sugarplum | In My Travel Beauty Bag

In order to save even more precious suitcase space, I ordered Colleen’s Discovery Collection set…the small sizes are perfect for travel, but also a great introduction to her best-selling products (that’s how I found and fell in love with the detox mask I featured in my latest Five Under $50).

Hi Sugarplum | In My Travel Beauty Bag

We should have been packing, but instead Mr. SP and I decided to have a little spa night. Or rather, I decided, and made him do it, too. But I wanted to prep our skin for the long flights ahead, so we started with the Detox Mask, then a cocktail of the Extreme Recovery Cream and Face Oil No. 9.  You can bet I’ll have the cream with me on the plane, too!

So that’s pretty much it for my travel beauty routine…very few products, many playing double-duty…but all I need for any length trip. What are must-haves in your beauty bag when traveling? Have you tried Colleen Rothschild’s products before?

She saw my post last week, and graciously offered 20% off for Hi Sugarplum readers until June 23! #luckyducks Just use code HISUGAR20 at check-out for 20% off your total order (plus free shipping!). Just check out all the stellar reviews of her products. I can’t decide which to try next.

    All great ideas!

How do you handle TSA's *one see through quart sized bag* rule?

    Posted 5.25.16 Reply
    • I like to pack small and in a small bag, but mostly so it's easier to get around during travel. I still check my bag on most flights (free checked bags with my credit card program). And in my experience, the TSA rules are just 3ozs, but not necessarily in a clear container. Or else how would we take toothpaste? 😉 xo

  6. do you have oily skin? i'm scared of putting more oil on my already oily face…

    Posted 5.25.16 Reply
    • I have combo skin…but actually, that's the myth about oils! When we over-clean and strip our skin, it panics and makes more oil. When we keep it clean and properly moisturized, it produces less of it's own oil. So using this face has actually balanced out my face more! xo

    Hey Cassie,

Which pink are you wearing in the racerback dress? I'm thinking I may order the pink and the green to try.

    Posted 5.25.16 Reply
    • Hmmmmm, I can't really tell a difference between the two!? I've had my pink one for 2-3 years, and when I ordered it, there was only 1 pink?? Sorry I can't be of more help, but both pinks look great. xo

I just ordered the detox mask and used the promotion code (which worked!) However there was no free shipping as indicated in your post. Thought you would like to know. Looking forward to trying this product.

    • Really??? That's a bummer. Maybe the code overrides the free ship? It didn't show a ship charge for me, but I wasn't using a code. Sorry about that!!

What do you go about your hair? I always have to bring my full size hair dryer because hotel ones don't cut it, plus my round brush and flat iron. Can't deal with the frizz if I don't!!!

      Ugh. Do.

      Posted 5.26.16 Reply
    • If I have room in my suitcase, I'll bring my hair dryer, but I usually just wing it with the one from the hotel. I do a lot of hats and ponytails when I travel. 😉 I do bring either a curling iron or a flat iron, so that helps control things.. xo

I received my order from CR today w/new skin care products~I’M THRILLED!! I do have what seems like a silly question tho. I’ve never used anything under my eyes directly but Neutrogena sensitive face lotion, I order the eye cream your Mama uses & put on as directed. My question is, after I put on the Retinal Supreme Eye Serum, (your Mama’s) & other products she uses just said products went “all over the face”…do you put it over the eye cream also? & she uses another eye cream, would that go other the Serum also? I’m a Newbie so please, please help me!!! Also, b/c I’m new to iT, is the Illuminating CC Cream a big difference than the one w/out Illumination? Please help w/this also, Newbie again!! I really appreciate your help & answer! I used my first skin care tonight, got it quicker than they said I would~YAY!!! But I do need to know what is the right way to do it, adding other products over the Retinal Supreme Eye Supreme or just over the other parts of my face? This Newbie needs your help please Cassie! Thank you!!!!

Yay, I’m thrilled you love the CR products, too! We tap the eye creams and serums on the top of the cheekbone (never right under your eye), then apply everything else. It’s okay if there’s product overlap. As for the illuminating, it just adds a bit of glow, but you can get that with bronzer, too!
