Hey Hey, friends! Happy almost-officially-Fall! Even though Dallas is back in the 90s, tomorrow marks the official first day of Autumn, and I’m ready for changing leaves, pumpkins on my porch, and every single cliched thing Fall has to offer!
Between the cozy fabrics, textured layers, and warm tones, Fall is always a favorite time for fashion, and today I’m sharing the essential seven your closet needs for a stylish season. It wasn’t easy to narrow down the options… because let’s face it, Fall is a bounty of cute clothes! #punny
But I stuck with seven, mostly because I liked the almost-alliteration of ‘Essential Seven’… but also because if I drill it down, these are my staples for a stylish, easy to mix, Fall wardrobe.

one // the denim
In the warmer months, I’m all about skirts and dresses, but as soon as the temps drop, I wear jeans more than anything else. My top three styles to wear for everything from casual weekends to work are a dark-rinse jean with no fading or distressing, a pair of white jeans, and a distressed pair (I love these).
Straight leg, and even wider leg jeans, are more on-trend now, but there are no rules when it comes to dressing for yourself, so if you’re a skinny-jean girl… go for it!
Fit Tip: These straight leg jeans are true to size, I’m in a 26.

two // the booties
This is another obvious choice, but wearing boots with everything from jeans to dresses is a darling Fall transition. I tend to stick with neutral shades, like taupe and cognac, that wear with everything from black to brown.
If I could only own two pairs, I’d start with a taupe ankle bootie, and a cognac or medium brown boot that’s either knee-high or slim around the ankle. I’ve done several posts over the years styling booties, like this Five Ways HERE, and this post has good tips for how to roll your denim with boots.
three // the winter white sweater
Crewneck, v-neck, or turtleneck, a pullover sweater in a creamy winter white is always a great closet addition. Of course I love sweaters of all colors, but if I had to choose just one, I’d choose ivory. I love it layered over a colorful plaid shirt, the crispness of it paired with denim, and the chicness of wearing it with white.
Fit Tip: Both these booties and the pullover are true-to-size. I’m in an XS sweater.

four // the cardigan
Throw it on with jeans or leggings, layer it over your favorite dress or skirt… cardigans are the quintessential Fall classic! This cardigan is as soft and cozy as it is cute and stylish. I love the longer length and front pockets, and it comes in these fun stripes, plus great fall solids HERE.
Fit Tip: This cardigan is an oversized fit, I’m in an XS.

five // the plaid
Nothing says Fall quite like plaid, and whether it comes in the form of a shirt, scarf, blazer, or trousers… every closet needs a little pop of this quintessential pattern. These trousers are a fun find, with a surprisingly easy fit thanks to the elastic waist in the back!
I love the full leg, and shades of black, brown and blue for a range of combinations.
Fit Tip: These pants run large, so size down if in-between. I’m in an XXS.

six // the handbag
No Fall outfit is complete without a handbag, and I love the richness of a cognac bag this time of year. Crossbody, hobo, or tote, everything goes. Add a pop of color with one of these fun scarves!

seven // the utility jacket
A rugged utility-style jacket like this adds the perfect finishing layer for all kinds of outfits. Obviously it looks great thrown on with jeans, but also lends a masculine, edgy touch to dressier outfits of skirts or dresses.
Utility (or military) jackets come in a variety of colors, but I stick with a neutral olive or light khaki to go with just about every color, including brown or black.
Fit Tip: I love the nipped waist of this jacket for a more feminine and flattering fit. It’s true to size, I’m in an XS.

Bottom line, Fall is all about the layers… for warmth, but also to create varying colors, patterns, and textures in an outfit. These seven classic styles are a great foundation for mixing and matching, and building countless Fall outfits.
What items do you agree on, and what would you add to your list of Fall Essentials? Happy almost-Fall, y’all!
