Dressing Room Diaries

Hey friends, and happy Monday. How was your weekend? It was my first home in a month, so I really soaked up the downtime and family time. We did have a little ‘incident’ with the teenager who’s learning to drive and the garage fridge…and as a result, we have no internet. Or a sprinkler system. #oops But no one was hurt, and hopefully a lesson was learned…so there’s that.

Today it’s time for another round of Dressing Room Diaries, where I hunt down some of the cutest new arrivals from my favorite retailers, and review them for you.

You know the drill with Dressing Room Diaries, the shots aren’t good, the lighting is bad, my hair is usually past it’s expiration, and many of the items aren’t a good fit for me…but it’s real life, real girl, real clothes…and hopefully helpful for you to see them this way, instead of perfectly styled on a model.

Fit Note: I’m 5’4″-ish, 120 pounds-ish, with a slight pear shape.

This time around, I tried to create more head-to-toe looks, to give you an idea of how I’d style the different pieces (instead of just the top, or just a bottom). I’ve also organized this round of DRD a little differently, so you’ll have to let me know if you have a preference…this time I’ve grouped things by category to make it easier when you’re looking for something in particular. And since they’re my favorite, of course we’ll start with dresses!

I love the fit and color of this dress, that somehow manages work for both casual occasions and special events. The cold shoulder is very on-trend, but the graceful drape of the sleeve has a timeless feel. It’s a thick, textured knit, fully lined, and even has pockets!

Fit Tip: The fabric has some stretch and give, so if you’re in between sizes, I’d go down. I’m in a size 2.

Cold Shoulder Dress | Striped Version

How could I not love this striped cutie with bell sleeves!? It’s a thick, stretchy cotton knit, that feels like a t-shirt. It’s just below the knee, so a very conservative length for church and work.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS, but would prefer the shorter length of a petite.

Striped Bell Sleeve Dress

This rayon dress has beautiful drape and flow, with the cutest flutter sleeve trim. The tie-waist gives it the look of a chic shirtdress, and allows for a more custom (flattering!) fit. The colors are deep navy and plum.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS and like the length.

Floral Tie-Waist Dress

The SignatureSoft line is pure genius because everything feels like pajamas…so I always gravitate to it. This racerback tank dress is sporty, comfy perfection, and available in a few fun colors. Imagine your favorite t-shirt turned into a stretchy tank dress…this is it.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS and it’s too long, so I’d prefer the length of a petite XS.

T-Shirt Swing Dress | Sneakers

If you’ve been reading this blog for longer than a minute, then this dress is more than familiar…I’ve been raving about it for years. And, it seems, I add a new color to my collection every year! I’m thrilled to see it back again, and in this deep plum shade. It’s so versatile, I’m thinking it should be the next {5 Ways}. Also, for all of you who already own it…I finally found the best bra option!! This thing is genius, but size up one.

Also, let’s just gaze on these sandals for a moment! The perfect neutral, not too high, really comfortable…and the cutest lace-up with tassels!!

Fit Tip: The dress is true, and I’m wearing an XS. The bra runs small, and the shoes are true.

Racerback Dress | Tassel Tie Shoes | Genius Bra Solution

It’s difficult to see the cute details of this skirt, but it’s a good one. The style you’d have for years to come, and reach for time and again. The a-line fit is so flattering, and the sash-tie defines (and creates) a slender waist. The color is a cross between navy and denim, and there’s just enough fit to help it skim over your figure.

As for the sweater top, it’s a really thick, stretchy cotton knit with the cutest grosgrain ribbon tie at the neck. The color is vibrant, but there’s several other options.

Fit Tip: The skirt runs a tad big, and I’m wearing a regular 0…I’d prefer the length of a petite 0. I’m wearing a small in the sweater, but needed an XS, so it’s true to size.

Grosgrain Tie-Neck Sweater | A-Line Skirt | Tassel Earrings

Okay, next up we’re talking tops…starting with this embroidered number. It has a Seinfeld/pirate shirt feel, but the embroidery is lovely and the sleeves so dramatic. I was, however, surprised by the darling and comfortable wedge espadrilles! So cute with jeans, skirts, and shorts, and a great neutral color.

Fit Tip: The shirt runs large…I’m wearing an XS and the neckline is too revealing. But the shoes are true.

Embroidered Pirate Shirt | Dark Jeans | Wedge Platform Sandals | Tassel Earrings

This tee is jersey soft with good drape, and the crochet top makes it special. It somehow manages to hide the bra straps, so no strapless bra necessary.

Fit Tip: The tee runs a tad big, so size down if you’re in-between. I’m wearing an XS.

Crochet Top Tee | Dark Jeans | Wedge Platform SandalsTassel Earrings

Two things about this top that caught my eye…the flirty peplum, and the brand. It just so happens to be Ivanka Trump, and I just so happened to find it at Nordstrom. I keep politics away from the blog, but I’m not oblivious to the hubbub surrounding these two brands. So even though this darling top isn’t available on-line yet, I thought you’d find it interesting that there’s a large collection of new Spring items by Ivanka Trump in-store.

Now let’s talk about the jeans…they’re hugely popular online with great reviews, but I found them to be on the thin side. The fit is great, and I liked the mid-rise and distressing, but my legs require a thicker material to hide lumps and bumps. So if you’re slender and in-shape, you’ll love them! 😉

Fit Tip: This sizing does seem to be a little inconsistent in the Ivanka brand…this top is an XS and feels a tad big, but I tried another top, and the XS fit like a glove. As for the jeans, they are true and I’m wearing a 26.

Mock-Neck Peplum Top (not online) | Distressed White Jeans | Tassel Earrings

I don’t typically gravitate to boho looks, but this series encourages me to try new things like this top. The embroidery and tie-sleeves are darling, and it drapes perfectly to wear out or half-tucked. It’s a tad sheer, so would need a cami.

Fit Tip: The top runs a tad big, and I’m wearing an XS.

Embroidered Top | Raw Hem Jeans | Sneakers | Tassel Earrings

Hello preppy and flirty peplum!! The combo of stripes and peplum waist had me positively swooning in the dressing room, and this top would be darling with everything from pencil skirts to shorts.

As for the jeans, they fit curvy figures beautifully with a mid-rise and nipped waist. There’s a comfortable amount of stretch, and squatting doesn’t create wardrobe malfunctions. #ifyouknowwhatImsayin They are a slightly cropped length, with a frayed hem…so perfect for sandals and wedges.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS in the top, but the jeans run a little big…I’m wearing a 0 and still had some room.

Chambray shirts are incredibly versatile and a true wardrobe must…they go with everything, and the color coordinates with virtually anything. This one has a really soft washed cotton feel, so there’s some drape and movement to it. It’s also really lightweight, so if you’re hot-natured, you’d likely prefer it over the traditional denim material.

Fit Tip: It’s true to size, but a more relaxed fit, so size down if you prefer it fitted. I’m wearing an XS.

Washed Chambray ShirtRaw Hem Jeans | Tassel Earrings

This might be the cutest top I’ve found this season…it makes me positively giddy. It doesn’t feel too exposed, and the one-shoulder sleeve keeps in in place. I love off-the-shoulder tops, but they do leave you feeling pretty exposed, and aren’t appropriate for some occasions…this top counters all that. It’s a crisp cotton, and the ruffle lays flat against the chest. I wear it with this bra.

Also, these jeans were fan-faves last year and sold out in a hot second. Well heeeey, they’re back! I love the cropped length and exposed hem, and healthy dose of stretch! They are thinner, like a jegging material, so a great option for hot days.

Fit Tip: The top runs a little big, so size down. I’m wearing the XS and it’s a little loose around the elastic (but not enough that I’m willing to return it! Or rather, I’ll overlook it bc I love the top so much!) Because of the stretch, the jeans do run large, so size down.

One-Shoulder Ruffle Top | Distressed Raw Hem Jeans | Similar Wedges

SignatureSoft material in a flattering racerback tank? I’ll take one in every color! I know what will end up happening with this tee…it’s so soft I’ll wear it to bed with my pjs, then throw on jeans or shorts for the next day. It’s a little thin, but not to the point of being sheer, and it has a slightly longer length.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS and it fits perfectly around the neck and armpits, but if you’re large chested, you may want to size up one.

Racerback Signaturesoft Tank | Distressed Raw Hem Jeans | Sneakers

I drug my mirror out to the Dining Room for better light, and I’m digging the new selfie background! (See the full Dining Room here.) Lots to talk about in this outfit…let’s start with the top. It’s a soft lilac color with ruffles and lace details, and a silky meets cotton material. I thought the color was so lovely for Spring, but it is a tad sheer, and I would have preferred it to be a little longer.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS, so perhaps sizing up would give more length, but I think would also make too big in the neckline.

Ruffle Trim Blouse | Distressed Jeans | Platform Espadrilles

The jeans are my go-to brand, and my favorite fit they offer. They have a slight mid-rise, and sit comfortably right above the hip bone…almost anchoring them in place! They are also thick, with just a touch of stretch, so they hold everything in (and keeps it in place!). Also, the distressing is minimal, and the length not too long.

I’ve seen this style of sandal everywhere, and I was a little on the fence with them. But I wanted to try them out for y’all, especially when I spotted this affordable version (the ‘originals’ are quite pricey). And actually, they’re really cute! And so fun with jeans. It took me a second to get used to walking in them, since they’re essentially like a flat, yet you’re up taller.

As for the bag, I included it in my last Faves Under $50 and just had to see if it was as cute in person as it is online. Verdict: it’s cuter.

Fit Tips: The jeans and shoes run true…I’m wearing a 26 in the jeans. They fit snug, but do give a little throughout the day.

Ruffle Trim Blouse | Distressed Jeans | Platform Espadrilles | Straw Bag

This top has so much going for it…the darling shade of blue, the fun tassels, flattering racerback neckline, and embroidery. But as you can see, it is a tad sheer…so definitely one for casual Summer days.

As for the jeans, I’ve shared them before, and I’m still trying to decide if they’re for me…they have a high-waist that’s so comfortable, yet they don’t look like ‘mom jeans.’ They’re extra-thick, but have enough stretch to keep them comfortable.

And the sandals…oh the sandals! I fell for this brand with this post, and loved the cushy insoles and cute styles. These are a great flat, neutral sandal, but come in fun colors, as well. They lace-up for a custom fit, but aren’t tall on the ankle (those of us with ‘athletic legs’ don’t do tall gladiator styles!). They look cute with jeans and shorts.

Fit Tips: The top is true, I’m wearing an XS, as are the jeans. My usual size 26 is snug, but they do give. And the sandals are true to size, as well.

Tassel-Trim Top | High-Waist White Jeans | Lace-Up Tie Sandals

I don’t typically do big-patterned pants, so I was surprised by how much I loved these. And not just for the flattering and comfy fit, but the floral, too! They do come in a ton of great solids, as well as a few other patterns. They are a thick, stretchy cotton and fit just at the hip bone. Back slit pockets are flattering across the bum, and the cropped length has a cute little flare.

The darling, go-with-everything, top is soft cotton with a subtle eyelet pattern. I love the shorter sleeve and little collar. It fits a little boxy, but they didn’t have my usual size in store, so I’m wearing a small.

Fit Tips: The pants run true and I’m wearing a regular 2. Petite sizing is available, and a good option even if you’re taller, but prefer more of a pronounced cropped length. I think the top runs true, and I’d prefer my usual XS (I ordered it to be sure).

Eyelet Top | Patterned PantsTassel Earrings

Here’s the same pant, but in a fun gingham pattern. For some reason, they are quite a bit thinner than the pair above, and don’t have the same amount of stretch…but so cute, right!? It’s the same top, as well, but shown untucked. And don’t get me started on the otomi clutch…see what an impact it gives the outfit!!??

Eyelet Top | Gingham Pants | Sneakers | Otomi Clutch | Tassel Earrings

So many good qualities about this top…subtle peplum, slight bell shape (great for disguising a tummy), adorable pattern options, and so versatile! I do wish it were a tad longer (I have a long torso), but it’s perfect for mid-rise jeans, pencil skirts and slacks.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS. It does have petite sizing available, but watch the length unless you want it dramatically cropped.

Peplum Top | White JeansSneakers

I’m always on the hunt for a good jean short…they’re just the easiest to throw on all Summer long, both over a swimsuit or styled for day. This pair is a little pricer, but a really great option. They have a slight boyfriend fit, so they aren’t too tight, but not overly slouchy either.

Fit Tip: They run true and I’m wearing my usual jean size, 26.

Striped Popover Top | Distressed Denim Shorts | Sneakers | Tassel Earrings

Summer may be a few months away, but it’s never too early to start looking for cute cover-ups. This pull-on dress is perfect for your bandeau style swimsuits. It’s a soft, lightweight cotton, but not sheer. My pic is a little yellow…it’s more of a true black and white.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS and it’s plenty roomie for a relaxed fit.

Striped Bandeau Cover-Up

And finally!!! I’m a sucker for a cute pajama pant, and these had me at stripes and crisp cotton. You can wear them long, or cuffed with a little snap, and the drawstring waist gives a custom fit. They come in a ton of colors and fun patterns, too.

Hi Cassie! So, as an annoying person on the internet I just wanted to point out the supply chain for clothing orders. Nordstrom’s announced in January (I think?) they were dropping Ivanka’s line, which means clothing for spring had already been ordered (back in September) and would be stocked in stores. The January announcement was about the upcoming orders for Fall 2017, and presumably beyond, typically placed in February.
Or, read something else into it, that’s fine too.

Love the Sam Edelman sandals! Are they an orange, brick red or more of a blue undertone true red?
Also, those Ivanka tops are super cute. I’m not a Trump supporter, but I thought it was interesting timing what with the boycott spreadsheet & all, and thought it was pretty tasteless on Nordstrom’s part to alienate potential & loyal customers based on political beliefs. Even though the announcement was most likely about Fall 2017 orders, this stuff is super cute & will fly off the shelves, which may have them reconsidering their decision for future seasons.

    Thanks for sharing!

I love your blog, and you’re such a cute model!!, but probably better to leave anything Trump related off your blog. He scares the s***t out of me and most of the rest of the world with his lies and inconsistencies (we need the citizenry and the rest of the world to believe our President for security reasons, and he has lost that 2 months in) so just seeing that name literally gives me a tightness in my chest. I mostly assume people from Texas are that man’s supporters, but try to hide my head in the sand about it as much as possible when reading blogs 🙂 Just my two cents, but you do you!

I’m such a big fan of yours, but was truly disappointed by your inclusion of the Ivanka line. The Trump family is causing heartache and pain all over this country, and Ivanka is an active participant in it. My goal by including the top was not to condone or condemn her or her brand, but only to inform those boycotting Nordstrom for political reasons. I’ve received so many emails from supporters who are disappointed that I continue to promote Nordstrom, so my goal was only to quiet that argument by stating it’s now a moot point. This blog will remain a joyful place, with no inclusion of politics! Cute clothes is one place we can all agree, right!? 😉 xoxoxo

I will add my disappointment in any mention of Ivanka. If you want to encourage women to shop at Nordstrom’s, I think telling them Nordstrom’s is dropping her brand would lead to far more patronizing the store for that reason than the few who would actually stop shopping there. I was so shocked to read any apparent approval of anything associated with her as I was enjoying your blog. The Trumps are the worst thing to happen to this country in decades if not forever.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment, Patty, but my intent was not to approve or condemn her products…only to serve as a PSA that they’re still available. I’ve actually received far more comments and emails from his supporters than non-supporters, so unfortunately, it really is a no-win situation and a complete divide.

I will continue to stay out of the political arena, and work hard to keep this a place of joy and fun style! xoxo

Hi! I like how you do so many fittings!! Thank you for making these posts so chock-full- of- pictures and items! It also is so helpful to see the items worn by a healthy and slim and realistically shaped person! Also, thanks for smiling for all your fittings. Lifts everyones moods don’t you think? Also, I think it is fine to relay cute items. Like you said, it is equally divided who likes whom, so I think it is fine to include pieces that are relevant to the season and style. Mentioning a relevant piece of clothing and clarifying facts is not making a political statement!!
