Dressing Room Diaries

Cheers to almost Friday, friends! We’re getting a jump on the long weekend and heading out for more college tours! I’m pretty excited about uninterrupted car time with the family…and the road trip snacks! #obviously I always grab sunflower seeds, original Sprees, and some sort of chocolate. What’s your road trip weakness?

Thanks so much for the love on this week’s posts! It was a big dose of home decor, with an all new gallery wall in our Family Room, and updates in Little Miss’s room, along some Spring Dreaming in my Vacation Mode round-up. I always love hearing your feedback, and it sounds like we’re all ready for some warmer weather! (You can sign up for my daily posts and weekly newsletter here…so you never miss a post!)

Today I’ve got the second half of my recent shopping trip with Mama Sugarplum, along with a bunch of new things I found on my own. You know the drill with Dressing Room Diaries…I hunt down some of the cutest new arrivals from my favorite retailers, and review them for you. The shots aren’t good, the lighting is bad, my hair is usually past it’s expiration, and many of the items aren’t a good fit for me…but it’s real life, real girl, real clothes…and hopefully helpful for you to see them this way, instead of perfectly styled on a model.

Fit Note: I’m 5’4″-ish, 120 pounds-isa (depending on the week’s taco count), with a slight pear shape. My usual size is an XS/0. Mama Sugarplum is 5’1″, with an hourglass figure. We typically wear the same size, but she sometimes goes with petite.

Let’s start with the top that has me pining for Spring…this darling eyelet peplum! It’s a really sturdy cotton with ruffle sleeves and flowing hem. The eyelet is fairly large, but the top is lined in all the right areas. If you aren’t comfortable with any skin showing through, you could easily layer a cami or tank under. It’d be so cute with colored or white denim and flat sandals or wedges. Since it is voluminous, I’d pair it with slim bottoms though.

Fit Tip: It runs large, I’m wearing an XS, but could easily size down one.

I live in tees in Spring and Summer, so I love when I find one with a special detail. This thick cotton tee has a tiered ruffle hem giving it a peplum shape. The sleeves have a cute little roll (it’s tacked down), and it comes in gray and black. And get this…it’s $25!

Fit Tip: It’s true to size, I’m wearing XS.

This striped tee is crazy soft with a relaxed dropped shoulder and longer length. I thought it was just oversized, until I realized I grabbed a medium! But I kind of like it!!

Fit Tip: Go with your usual size if you want it fitted, but I’d size up at least one for a more relaxed tee fit.

I shared this tee and jeans combo last week, but since Mama Sugarplum is trying it this week, I figured I’d show it again. I adore this v-neck pocket tee (the stripes are navy), and the high-waist jeans are crazy comfy!

Fit Tip: Size up one in the tee, and the jeans are true to size.

I’m not usually one for novelty prints, but I was smitten with these lemons!! Maybe it’s the navy and yellow combo, or the soft cotton sweater fit! It would be darling layered with a chambray shirt!

Fit Tip: I sized up one to a small for more shoulder room.

This cotton sweater is a great transition piece…the weave is closer to a cable knit, and the weight is perfect for chilly nights and warm days. Of course I loved the pink and navy stripes.

Fit Tip: It’s true to size, but I preferred the relaxed fit from sizing up one.

I was ridiculously excited to try this sweatshirt…seersucker stripes, crisp bows, and super soft sweatshirt…what’s not to love!!?? But it felt too cropped for my long torso, and the sleeve hit my arms in a strange spot. I think sizing up would help, and having a shorter torso or more petite frame.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS.

This tunic-style top is silky soft jersey knit, and the slight diagonal of the stripe creates a flattering shape. It has a sheer peplum hem for a fun touch, as well. The neckline is wider than a crewneck, but not quite a boatneck.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small, but an XS would fit better, so I’d say it’s true to size.

First let’s talk about Mama SP’s cute outfit, then we’ll talk about how stinking cute she is!! The embroidered jeans are thick and stretchy, and fit comfortably at the natural waist. The length is a perfect ankle crop. And the gingham top is a sturdy cotton with ruffled cuffs, and ruffles up one sleeve. It fits a little boxy, so it’s best worn untucked. As for styling the jeans, I’d treat them as a floral and pair them with solids, stripes and gingham.

Fit Tip: She’s wearing an XS top and 2p jeans.

I’ve been a long-time fan of this fleecy soft cowlneck pullover, and was excited to see it back in fresh, new colors like this blush pink. It’s lightweight and drapey, and so cute with jeans, shorts, and even workout wear.

Fit Tip: I normally wear a regular XS (long enough for leggings), so tried this in a petite XS for comparison.

Jean jackets are my go-tos in transitional seasons, they are just such a cute layer for so many outfits! I love the fresh take of it in white (great for pairing with traditional denim), and this one is light and so stretchy. It has a close, feminine fit I love, too.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

I wore this exact jacket all over Scandinavia, and it was the best top layer for cold, damp (or rainy!) days. It’s fully-lined, so surprisingly warm, with a thick, water-resistant outer layer. Plus, the cheery color is darling! I was excited to see it back, and available in new colors.

Fit Tip: I sized up one to a 4.

I have a weakness for long sleeve striped tees, and whenever I see a new color, I’m compelled to add it to my closet. They are incredibly versatile layering pieces, and darling on their own. This one is thick cotton, super soft, and some really fun color combos.

Fit Tip: I sized up to a small so I can dry it without worry.

One of my favorite utility jackets is back in a slew of new colors, plus this muted camo print. It’s a sturdy cotton twill with drawstrings at the waist (inside) to create a slight hourglass, more feminine shape.

Fit Tip: It’s true to size, I’m wearing an XS.

Moving on to dresses…I know many of you have weddings, events, etc coming up, and I found some really pretty options. This crepe shift dress is a classic shape, with pleated ruffles on the dropped sleeve that move beautifully when you walk. This pink is really vivid in person, almost neon, but it also comes in black and white.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 2.

Ruffle Sleeve Dress | Nude Pumps

This off-the-shoulder dress has a flirty ruffle across the chest, and body-skimming fit. It falls just above the knee and has elastic sleeves for a comfortable fit that stays put on your arms. It comes in a ton of colors and could work for so many occasions…dressed up with statement jewels and heels, or paired with wedges or flat sandals for more a casual style.

Fit Tip: It runs a little big, so especially if you’re small-chested, I’d size down. I’m wearing an XS and was having a hard time keeping it up on the chest.

Off the Shoulder Dress | Nude Pumps

This sweet dress blends several textures for a feminine style…crochet collar, floral lace panels at the shoulder, and tight pleats through the body. I think I like it better without the tie, which is easily removed.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 2.

Pleated Dress

One of my favorite dresses this session…this figure-hugging dress has a playful tiered ruffle hem and super-flattering racerback arm. It has a touch of stretch to fit your curves comfortably, and a long exposed zipper in the back for a touch of edge. I’d wear it with killer heels or flat sandals.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 2, but if you’re busty, I’d size up.

I love the soft lilac color of this dress, and the ruffled details, but it was a bit thin for my comfort zone. It’s not sheer, but I’d definitely want to wear some sort of shape wear for extra coverage and support.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Drop Waist Ruffle Dress | Nude Pumps

I adore this chambray shirtdress with little ruffle sleeves, but do wish the material were a bit thicker! It’s a great casual Summer dress, but the poplin cotton will probably wrinkle easily.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small.

This fit-and-flare is super flattering with a pleated skirt and fun bell sleeves. The cut-out details give the classic shape a chic edge, and the thick material skims the body comfortably. It’s sturdy and thick, but the skirt has nice movement.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular 2.

Finally, we’re wrapping it up with some fun workout wear…starting with this zip-up jacket. It’s long and thick, and a really structured (almost stiff) construction. I love the mock collar and contrasting edge, plus it’s soft and warm! The leggings are a fun pattern with the perfect amount of stretch and cropped length (and on sale!).

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small jacket and XS leggings.

This pullover is super soft, with a warm funnel neck and slightly fitted body shape, and the leggings are high waist and cropped (on sale!).

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS in the top, but would prefer the size up for more shoulder room. The leggings are true to size, I’m wearing an XS.
