Hey, hey, hey!! I hope you guys had a fabulous weekend. I spent a lot of time in my pajamas since my real clothes are still a little snug from a gluttonous holiday. (I blame these!) Oh yay, back to the Lean Cuisines. That was sarcasm…fortunately I didn’t eat that.
How about we get back to projects and original posts?! As nice as breaks are, I start to get a little twitchy after too much down time. So when Home Depot contacted me about participating in another Style Challenge…this time involving their new line of Chalky Paint…I jumped at the chance. I’ve never used the medium before, but was excited to see if it really sticks like ‘they’ say it does.
My victim? This banged-up, no-character, laminate-coated, too-orange, old nightstand. How’s that for an introduction?!

If it looks familiar, that’s because virtually every bedroom set in the ’90s came with one. We’ve been using it as a little hall storage chest….but really, it was just a space-filler until I could find something better. Hence why I’d never taken the time to sand, prime, paint and seal it. Why bother when I knew it was destined for the curb?!

But with chalk paint…there’s no need to sand or prime…even on laminate surfaces like this sweet baby. And since the paint is latex with virtually no smell, I was able to paint it in the Living Room with no prepping. Which is a bonus considering the frigid temps outside.

Switching out the hardware is always a simple way to upgrade a piece, so I added these inexpensive ring pulls, then got busy styling (my favorite part).

So much for curbside-destiny….this pretty little chest has found a forever home with us now!

To create the vignette on top, I followed my formula for styling coffee tables.

And now the nook makeover is complete (see the transformation here and here)! How’s that for starting the new year off right?!

Let’s bask in the Before & Afters…

My Gift Wrap Station lives on the back of that door. |

I’m especially fond of the view from our bedroom.

Yep, the power of paint (and paper, and a little bit of styling) strikes again!

For my tutorial and more details on the paint, check out my post on the Home Depot’s blog, The Apron. Did you even know they had a blog?? It’s a great source for inspiration and tips.
And just like that, another one bites the dust!!

Beautiful color choice! Also, I didn't realize that using this type of paint allows you to skip the sanding and priming steps. I have a coffee table sitting in my basement that I'll try this method on. Thanks for sharing!
Love! Glad to know Home Depot has chalk paint. I have wanted to try it but could only find it listed at specilaty stores across town. Do they have a good color selection?
It looks beautiful! I love the color combination!
what a fun pop of color! love it. xo jillian – cornflake dreams
Obsessed with the color!! I need to use chalk paint again .. love the lack of prep!!
Painting in the house with no dropcloths – you're brave lady! Love the colour you chose. I didn't know HD had chalk paint. I'll have to give it a try.
Great change–perfect color!
Love that color! You would never know this was upcycled. Great job!
Love the bright color!! I've been itching to chalkboard paint something, this is great inspiration!
I'm going to try their new line of chalk paint…I have a few laminate pieces that could be DIYed into awesomeness! This turned out great, love the bright pop of color and your styling is en pointe.

What a fun space! I would just want to hang out in that hallway it looks so good!
Love the pop of blue!! Just want that space needed!
That color just makes me happy. In fact, whenever I have a bad day, I'm just going to refer back to this post and look at that color :).
What a fun color! Really adds so much to the space!
So much more "you" now! Love how it picks up the bits of blue in the living room.
That color looks so great Cassie 🙂 xo Kristin
Wow! Awesome transformation!!! I love how the blue pops against the dragonfly wallpaper.
I have zero balls to add color that bright to my space so I thoroughly enjoy living with bright colors through your home!! HA!
Ha! Well, a small side table is a good and safe place to start! 😉
It looks great! I want to try chalk paint on my dining room table but have had a hard time finding the Annie Sloan stuff. That's so good to know Home Depot makes it. Would you mind doing a post in the future about how the finish has held up? Ooh and what is the color selection like?? Nicely done!!
Thanks Shanna! It's been painted a month, and it's still pristine…however, it doesn't really see much action since it's a side chest. But I'll keep and eye on it and let you know!
You've done it again! Love the difference paint can make!
Love it! Katie wants me to paint her bed and another dresser she has. I might have to check out this paint. Haven't used it before, but would be willing to give it a go…I hate all the prep work that goes with traditional finishes!!
yo girl, you're the only person painting in this cold weather and look at that!! so fab♥ love the color cassie!
how many layers of paint until you got the finish that you want?
huggies♥

It looks especially good against that wallpaper and the view from the bedroom. And you are a gorgeous bride!
You are a gorgeous friend!
Love the blue great color choice! and the wallpaper love it!
I'm curious about the painting on the wall of the little girl. Is that a vintage find, or something someone in your family painted?
Good eye, girlie! That painting was done by my grandmother…no one in my family wanted it because she creeped them out…but I love it!! 🙂
I love the pop of color. Great choice!
that smacks of style. love all the pics and instructions.
Cassie,
My Home Depot didn't carry this paint — and I tried two different stores. Did you have to order it online? I LOVE skipping the sanding and priming. Thanks! It looks great!
Hi Tracy! They actually sent me samples to try, but I think it's only available online right now…go to their site and look up DecoArt Chalky Paint. It's @ $10 for a small container…and I used half of the container on this piece.
Hope this helps!
Absolutely stunning, Cassie! What a beautiful piece! I love how your little nook has been totally transformed. Amazing, amazing job, girl! Hope you're having a wonderful week!
~Abby =)
That punch of color is so you. And those simple pulls make such a difference too!
This is fabulous. I love the wallpaper, the blue color for the dresser and the way you accessorized the contents on the table. What could be viewed as a non-space – you created a nook with wow factor! I chose this post as one of My Friday Favorites – you can check it out here: http://wp.me/p2hp9V-YA
Hi Cassie, I loved your makeover so much that I immediately ordered the same color and am in the process of painting my children's wooden play chairs that were all knicked up. I've already put 2 coats of the treasure color on the chairs and love them. I have the wax but am contemplating not using it as I think the matte finish is kind of fun. How did you apply the wax? Thanks!!
What a fun idea for the kid's chairs! I just applied the wax with my regular paintbrush…it goes on wet, not like a paste. Hope this helps!
That makeover is too awesome!! Does this paint come in any other colors? I'd love to do the same thing once I purchase my nightstands!! You did a great job!!!
Thanks Alisa! Yes, the paint comes in about 20 colors…check the Home Depot website for options!
Obsessed with that color! And so exciting to see that HD now has chalk paint! It is so great to work with! Great job girly!
xoxoxo!
Boom…..she is now ready for a lose up! Looks so damn good! Love the paper too. And the styling:)
Cassie, I love your makeover in this little nook, now I know what to try on the 2 pieces that I have that need re-painting! I am obsessed with dragonflies and would love to use this wallpaper. Can I ask where you purchased it?!
Cassie- thank you for the awesome drawer pull recommendation! We have the IKEA hemes in our bedroom (black/brown) and purchased 12 new pulls for our dresser. It looks amazing and makes the $300 dresser look custom made!
I'm so glad you liked the pulls!! I'm crazy for them…and you can't beat the price! I bet they look amazing on your Ikea piece!
Cassie, I am about to try the Home Depot chalky paint for the first time, and a I have a question about the waxing and buffing process. Did you use the special round waxing brush that they sell, or did you use some other brush for the wax? For the buffing step, did you just use a white cloth? Thanks for any tips!
Wow, what a difference! I never heard of chalk paint in vibrant colors like this before, I love it!
