{Before & After} Zero Forethought Coat Closet

This post will, unfortunately, give you a glimpse of what it’s like inside my head. I worked from home several days this week because my sweet boy had strep throat. I love working from home…it’s a real luxury, but I get cabin fever after just one day.

Here’s where my mutant gene kicks in….after I’d finished work the first day, I went to the coat closet by the front door to stash put something away. This is what I saw:

before

In my restlessness, I decided right there to organize that hot-mess. Out came everything:

empty

Apparently my painters didn’t think to include inside the closets….nice trim! Well, of course I had to fix that! So I trotted out to the garage for the trim paint, but came across another color first.

why not pink

Who decides to paint their coat closet at 6pm on a Wednesday with a sick kid and no dinner prepared?! And paint it pink no less?! When Mr. Sugarplum came home, he found the two pink walls….oh, and all the contents of the closet.

floor mess

How in the world did all this fit in there?!?!?! But sadly, he’s so accustomed to my OCD outbreaks, he just said, “Cool.” I left things like this and ran to make dinner. “Who wants breakfast for dinner?!?” (Better known as B4D in our house.)

Twenty minutes later I was back, finishing the walls and trim. Do you know how hard it is to get a ladder in a hall closet?!

almost

Meanwhile, I had a cutie-pie having a ball in the mess of Winter Wonderland:

I liked the shelf white, but have a metallic silver paint I’ve been wanting to try out…so I thought this was a good spot. After all, it’s only the coat closet…who will see it?! (Which is what I kept telling myself as I was painting it!!!)

silver shelf

Of course I didn’t sand it down first, it’s just the coat closet, duh! And here it is with everything put back:

coat closet after

I’m no fool, I know it will only look like this until fall hits and we’re actually using the coats and scarves. And yes, we do live in Texas…so yes, we do have an disproportionate number of coats. We discovered in this clean-out that Mr. Sugarplum has an unnatural addiction to windbreakers, and I, apparently, to pea coats!

So while I could have been snuggled up with my DVR, I somehow went from this:

before

to this:

coat closet after

And maybe I actually burned a few calories!!! Was this closet makeover on my extensive list of projects I have planned around the house? Of course not!! But it’s pretty cute. And I only painted it this color because it’s the first one I saw in the garage. It’s Sherwin Williams ‘Bougainvillea’ with a splash of white mixed in. I was going for a more salmony color, but oh well. I’ll leave it….after all, it’s only the coat closet.

How about you….have you had any manic projects pop up out of nowhere?!

Yes, I have had manic decorating episodes. Trouble is, it's a little harder to say "oh well, it's only the living room".
This post seems perfectly normal behaviour to me in fact. Doesn't everybody engage in this sort of activity???
    Love your closet :o)

Your same urge hit me at 8pm one night, and I ended up painting my entire utility room (14' x 6') a beautiful shade of sunshine yellow (great in there – would've been a little scary-bright in a bedroom which I'd bought it for!)…the whole room with a brush! No, I just couldn't THINK of waiting until morning and running out to buy a roller…when the urge hits… 🙂 Ali

I LOVE painted coat closets! They're like neat little surprises 🙂 I did the one in my old house turquoise. Kind of makes me want to tackle the one in my new house …

Oh, and I'm glad I'm not the only one in Texas with a million winter accessories! 🙂
