Well, after five days of being snowed and iced in, we finally changed out of pajamas and ventured out of the house this weekend. The draw for Mexican food outweighed the danger of any lingering ice! I thought the four of us would surely go ‘Redrum’* on each other, but it was actually a very nice week.
It would have been even better had I known ahead of time, so I could stock up with supplies for the final projects in Babygirl’s Room (like ceiling paint!!!). But we had fun creating things for Valentine’s Day (I’ll show you this week), and playing Musical Mirrors & Rugs in the house. You know this fun game, rearranging rugs and re-hanging pictures and mirrors! I love how mixing up the things you have makes everything feel new again.
Enough about all that, much too long ago, I showed you the DIY Drapes I was creating for the Big Girl Room. I created a pattern on the drapes, but soon realized the window was too narrow to appreciate it.
I planned on hanging the drapes much higher, but I still wasn’t happy with the result. The goal was to make the window appear larger, but the pattern only seemed to muddle the space. Then a rockstar reader, Lisa, from Trapped in North Jersey suggested that I add a pelmet box like she did in her bathroom.
Perfect solution! A pelmet (or cornice, whichever you prefer) will bring some added interest to the small window, and allow me to cover the curtain fixtures. So I started looking at inspiration pictures of pelmets.

I love the look…it’s like giving the window a top hat, or eyebrows. And even though I’m using black to tone down the sweetness of the room, the black pelmets shown above might be too serious for a little girl’s room.
These white ones look great with white drapes (which is what I have), and I could easily use black grosgrain ribbon as the accent trim.

I also thought of having a bit more fun with the window, since it is a 5-year-old’s room. I could use dark pink, similar to the Radish color I painted her bed:

I’m on the fence as to which I prefer and would love your input…after all, you’re the most stylish people I know! Here’s the window now (minus the darkening shade I installed the day after I realized how much light these drapes let in at 6:30am!):
See what I mean about the window needing a hat? But the light and airy drapes, hung high and wide on the window, are already a huge improvement from before:
I think we all agree ‘Tall & Slender’ is everyone’s first choice! Forgive my really crude Photoshop mock-ups, but here’s how the window would look with a black, white or pink pelmet box:
I’ll make the box large enough to cover the curtain hardware and the expanse of wall showing. I also included some different pattern designs I could easily accomplish with ribbon and fabric glue.
I like the scallop shape of ‘Pink 1’, but the window shares a wall with the bed…which has a really pretty shape already. I don’t want the two competing or clashing.
So what do you think? What’s your favorite fabric color and pattern design for the accent trim? I’m hoping to use Jenny’s easy tutorial to make it. I’m determined to get this room done soon!
