Well, after five days of being snowed and iced in, we finally changed out of pajamas and ventured out of the house this weekend. The draw for Mexican food outweighed the danger of any lingering ice! I thought the four of us would surely go ‘Redrum’* on each other, but it was actually a very nice week.
It would have been even better had I known ahead of time, so I could stock up with supplies for the final projects in Babygirl’s Room (like ceiling paint!!!). But we had fun creating things for Valentine’s Day (I’ll show you this week), and playing Musical Mirrors & Rugs in the house. You know this fun game, rearranging rugs and re-hanging pictures and mirrors! I love how mixing up the things you have makes everything feel new again.
Enough about all that, much too long ago, I showed you the DIY Drapes I was creating for the Big Girl Room. I created a pattern on the drapes, but soon realized the window was too narrow to appreciate it.
I planned on hanging the drapes much higher, but I still wasn’t happy with the result. The goal was to make the window appear larger, but the pattern only seemed to muddle the space. Then a rockstar reader, Lisa, from Trapped in North Jersey suggested that I add a pelmet box like she did in her bathroom.
Perfect solution! A pelmet (or cornice, whichever you prefer) will bring some added interest to the small window, and allow me to cover the curtain fixtures. So I started looking at inspiration pictures of pelmets.

I love the look…it’s like giving the window a top hat, or eyebrows. And even though I’m using black to tone down the sweetness of the room, the black pelmets shown above might be too serious for a little girl’s room.
These white ones look great with white drapes (which is what I have), and I could easily use black grosgrain ribbon as the accent trim.

I also thought of having a bit more fun with the window, since it is a 5-year-old’s room. I could use dark pink, similar to the Radish color I painted her bed:

I’m on the fence as to which I prefer and would love your input…after all, you’re the most stylish people I know! Here’s the window now (minus the darkening shade I installed the day after I realized how much light these drapes let in at 6:30am!):
See what I mean about the window needing a hat? But the light and airy drapes, hung high and wide on the window, are already a huge improvement from before:
I think we all agree ‘Tall & Slender’ is everyone’s first choice! Forgive my really crude Photoshop mock-ups, but here’s how the window would look with a black, white or pink pelmet box:
I’ll make the box large enough to cover the curtain hardware and the expanse of wall showing. I also included some different pattern designs I could easily accomplish with ribbon and fabric glue.
I like the scallop shape of ‘Pink 1’, but the window shares a wall with the bed…which has a really pretty shape already. I don’t want the two competing or clashing.
So what do you think? What’s your favorite fabric color and pattern design for the accent trim? I’m hoping to use Jenny’s easy tutorial to make it. I’m determined to get this room done soon!
definitely the white or the pink, I think I am leaning toward the white just because the pink feels too heavy on the sheer curtains, but maybe with the room darkening one behind it – it will feel more the same? I also like how you tied the sheers together with the black line down the sheers in addition to the cornice. So maybe if you also put some pink on the sheers it would tie it together (because I really want to use the pink can you tell).. of the the pink I think I like the third design the best, but I also like very simple designs 🙂
With the white gauzy drapes I say definitely the the white pelmet- all the other ones look too dark and make it look too top heavy (if that makes sense)- I love love the white with black trim on both the pelmet and drapes-very pretty!!! As for the pattern, I like the plain box or double box best. Loved how you photoshopped all of your ideas btw- brillian!
I like the third from the left. Just a simple rectangle. That way it will not compete with other elements in the room but will still contain some styling of its own. Great idea.

WOW. What a huge difference going to the ceiling with the light curtains. Looks so much larger! I am digging number three . . I say simple and clean. Loving the pink!
My vote would be for the plain white with black outline. Nice graphic touch to outline the window that allows all the other colors to shine. Looks like your daughter is going to have a really fantastic room!
I was never a fan of Pelmets…until I read this post. I am really loving them in a little girls room. I love all the pink ones you created and also the one from the Little Green Notebook. You could incorporate your Greek Key still by using the Pelmet and then maybe keep your plain drapes but add a trim detail in the middle with some pom poms(pink or black) I think it would be adorable…great post!

I browsed through the comments and apparently I'm one of only a few that is just enamored with #4…it's still simple and clean, but has that great tiny bit of pattern to make it interesting…LOVE. I'm going to justify that people just don't like it as much because they can't visualize it with more pink in the middle and the beautiful, crisp lines it would have…*sigh* But I'm sure whatever you choose will be insanely amazing, can't wait to see it! (c:

I say definitely a white pelmet. Instead of ribbon, you can always use black pom pom fringe on the edge of of both the pelmet and the drapes to keep it really girly. You know I love me some pom pom fringe! I know what ever you choose will look great!
I'd definitely go with the pink! It's fun and sassy and really looks fresh against the blue wall. …and I would pick one of the more simple designs. She already has so many fantastic things going on in there, so I would keep the window treatments subtle. 🙂

Charli — I bought a basic roll shade from Home Depot. Ask for a 'room darkening' one…and get the thickest they make! They'll even cut it to size for you free. Mine was less than $20.
As much as I love pink, the white one stood out for me! Since it's on the same wall as the bed, I think it will be cute to highlight the bed, and make the pelmet complement, instead of compete with it. 🙂
I actually like pink #1 because it *echos* the shape of the headboard. It seems like the squarishness of the others would compete? Clash? SO that's my vote. Pink #1.

I think that a childs room should be a place to have a little more fun, so my vote is for #4 on the white fabric.

i would still go with pink 1. Repetition is a good thing in design, it adds a cohesive feel and I like the feminine lines of it!

I like #4 on white fabric with pink ribbon and then you could always change it to black when she's older.
