Sugarplum Style, Vol. 34

Cheers to Friday! I’m so excited to see this week come to an end…it’s been Red Ribbon Week at school, and even though I’m thrilled the focus has been on drug awareness, coming up with daily themed outfits for each kid is no joke!

And don’t get me started on Halloween costumes! Little Miss and I have been going round-and-round trying to agree on an ‘appropriate’ costume for a 10-year-old girl! #sigh My son always tells her, ‘Modest is the hottest!’…don’t you love that?!

Okay, mom-rant over! Today it’s your monthly dose of Sugarplum Style…snapshots of my everyday outfits I post to Instagram and Facebook, created by mixing-and-matching items in my closet. We’ve had a few teases of Fall, so some cozier looks are finally making their way in the bunch.

If you’ve been reading this blog for more than a minute, then you’ve heard me sing the praises of this fleece cardi wrap. It’s been dubbed, ‘the kitten cardi’ because it truly feels like being cuddled by newborn kittens. Correction: declawed kittens. It’s the kind of thing you put on Friday night, and don’t take off until Monday morning…I pretty much wear it with my pajamas, then with jeans or leggings the next day. It’s a little disgusting, actually.

I don’t know if it’s the relaxed silhouette, or having my bum covered…but I’m obsessed with longer cardis this season. I like that they add a light extra layer, but not enough to make me overheat. Plus, they just look cute!

If I’m not wearing a long cardi, chances are I’m wearing this utility jacket. It’s perfect with jeans and casual dresses, and adds a touch of edge to all my outfits. This one is my favorite, but definitely size down. (I’m wearing an XXS.)
I used to wear black jeans all. the. time. And then my favorite pair wore out, and I stopped wearing black jeans. That all changed when I found these (only $35!). They look great for a night out with booties or heels, or with virtually any shirt or sweater for day. I wear them as I would regular denim, but they make everything a little more chic. (These fit true, and I wear a 26.)

We got a real taste of Fall on our quickie trip to New Mexico (full recap coming next week!), and I took advantage of the scarf weather.
Scarf opportunity #2. I love the southwestern pattern, and silky soft material of this one. Plus, the colors coordinate perfectly with most Fall hues. (And again with the black jeans!)
I have this habit of lurking in doorways when we travel. And for those of you who asked about white sneakers in Fall…yes ma’am, I still wear them.

This is how we Fall in Texas…sleeveless and scarves. I’ve had this lightweight scarf awhile, and it looks great with everything! I just got this heavier, infinity version too…and it’s goooood!
Another go with the kitten cardi…it’s super cute worn open, or closed with the single button. I usually wear it with a basic tank, or a striped top and tassel necklace when I want to feel more ‘dressed.’
Made this little knit dress Fall-ready by adding my trusty utility jacket. Should I be embarrassed by how often I wear that thing?! Or are you impressed by how versatile it is?! Yes, let’s go with impressed.
I miiiiiight have picked this outfit up off the closet floor, and maaaaaybe wore it two days in a row. Am I alone in doing that?!
I think this was my favorite outfit from last month. As evidenced by the repeat appearance in this post.
I can’t wait to share more of this stunning area with you…but for now, how cute is this cowlneck pullover!? I’ve worn it with both my go-to activewear pants, and jeans…and it’s always comfy and cute.
I’m all of a sudden having a moment with cranberry and plum hues. They are just as versatile as black and gray, so they easily integrate into my wardrobe.
Third time’s a charm for this combo!
We ate our way through the State Fair of Texas in this pullover and sneakers.
This post was actually a Dressing Room Diaries, but it got such a big response on social media, I thought you might want to see it, too. And that gorgeous floral top is now on sale…so #cometomama
Speaking of mama…you can find all of Mama Sugarplum’s picks in this post

On Mama SP: Sweater | Scarf | Dark Jeans | Booties

I hope these posts inspire you to create new combinations from your closet! The key isn’t to have more clothes, but to mix up what you do have in new and different ways. Except this jacket and this $25 scarf, you need those. And if we’re being honest, these black jeans, too. #trustme #enabler

I've lived in that Bobeau fleece wrap for the past 2 falls and winters. It's the best! I also regularly see them for about $20 at TJ Maxx…
    Happy Friday!

  2. You always have the cutest outfits! I have that utility jacket and just love it. I wear it all the time! Regarding the kids – we have been doing the themed outfits as well. Such a pain when you are trying to get them out the door and then realize it's "silly sock day!" Enjoy your weekend!

  4. Your son is so wise!! I love that phrase, "Modest is hottest!" It is so frustrating sometimes shopping for your girls. Everything is so tight, short and inappropriate. Love your outfits as always. Enjoy your weekend and best of luck finding that perfect costume for daughter. Mine decided on a MODEST version of Little Red Riding Hood. She is 10 too!

  5. I'm wanting to order the Norfolk Crossbody, but have a few questions for ya. I'm wanting to use it as my travel purse. Is it small enough not to be bulky and big enough to hold stuff? Like the 3 bears…just right? I'm needing it for my 50th b-day trip to the Big Apple so I need to get ordering it if you think it is a good travel crossbody. I've been wanting to order a purse from BG, but all of the totes are just too big for me. 🙂

    • Hi Karla! I'm 5'4", so you can see the scale of the bag on me. I think it's plenty roomie for travel…easily holds wallet, phone, sunglasses, lipsticks, etc. And since it's canvas, it will expand if need be! xo

Red ribbon week? Never heard of it so trying to picture what fancy dress for drug awareness is. Monday is harried ER nurse covered in vomit? Tuesday rumpled suit, red rimmed eyes and talcum under the nose? 😉
I also imagine how difficult it is for low income families to keep up with it all! Saw some excellent costumes on the tube yesterday though
