Hi Sugarplum!

Spring Style | 8 Darling Outfits Under $50

April 1, 2019

Happy April, friends! We’re headed home today from an amazing weekend in NYC celebrating our Little Miss. I can’t believe our precious girl is now 13…and I have two teenagers! Life is fast, and sweet, and hard, and all the things, but being their mom is my biggest joy.

I’m trying so hard to savor each day with them, but can’t escape the feeling that I’m just hanging on by my fingertips. As desperately as I want time to freeze, or even go back to when they were younger, they both just keep growing!!

But before I start another round of ugly crying, let’s get to today’s post! Earlier this month I shared some darling beach wear for the whole family…from Walmart of all places! And the overwhelming response was, ‘Wait, what?! Show me more!’

Challenge accepted! But as it turns out, it wasn’t terribly challenging to find more stylish pieces at Walmart! Their site is easy to navigate, and soon my cart was full of super-cute finds for Spring.

These pieces were my favorites from the first batch. Yep, I’ve got another order coming…once you get started, it’s hard to stop! The prices are just too good! I styled eight outfits with my Walmart finds, and most everything is under $20!

First of all, this pocket v-neck tee is legit!! Soft, slub cotton with a great length and sleeve, and comes in tons of colors. And get this…it’s only $8! EIGHT! Stock up on all the colors, you won’t be sorry.

I’m wearing ‘lilac glaze’ and love it paired with this camo skirt. Y’all, this darling skirt is from Walmart! And it’s $18! I know, I need to chill, but the quality of these pieces is seriously the same as big-name department stores, so it’s pretty exciting. The skirt is super-sturdy twill, with a cute little embroidery on the back pocket.

And the sandals? Yep, $8.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small in the tee, size 2 skirt, and since the sandals don’t come in half-sizes, I rounded up.

V-Neck Pocket Tee (available in 11 colors!) | Camo Skirt  | Slide Sandals | Similar Fedora | Similar Sunglasses

Looking to add a little boho to your Spring wardrobe? Love this flowy embroidered top with ties on the sleeve. It’s a crisp, lightweight fabric, and billowy shape.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small, but needed an XS, so it’s true to size.

Embroidered Boho Top | Similar Sunglasses

This ribbed cardigan was actually suggested by one of you! She tole me she lives in these cardigans, so of course I had to try for myself. And yes ma’am, it’s a good one! Sturdy, but soft, and beautifully made. I love the length and pockets, not to mention the huge selection of colors. Layer it over tees and camis, or even sundresses.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small, so size up if you prefer a looser fit through the upper arms.

V-Neck Pocket Tee (available in 11 colors!) | Ribbed Cardigan (available in 7 colors!) | Similar Sunglasses

Shift dresses are so easy-to-wear and perfect for Spring and Summer days. I loved the soft linen-blend of this one, plus the pockets and stripes! It’s fully-lined (!!!) with a curved hemline. The pockets are a little bulky at the hips, but lie flat after a good steaming.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small, but would prefer my usual XS…so true to size.

Striped Dress | Striped Beach Bag | Similar Sunglasses

This bag though!! Obsessed! The colors, the woven raffia, the long shoulder straps…the price! It’s great for travel, too, since it packs flat.

Striped Woven Beach Bag

Another camo find…this cotton twill utility jacket is sturdy really well-made. It wears a bit like a shirt, but has the feel of a light jacket. The camo print is spot-on, and even has a cute little embroidery on the pocket.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS

Camo Embroidered Jacket | V-Neck Pocket Tee | Similar Sunglasses

Nothing groundbreaking about this outfit, except it’s pretty much my Summer uniform! I can’t get enough of these pocket tees and sandals (similar to the popular grecian slides!).

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small tee, and rounded up in the sandals.

V-Neck Pocket Tee | Slide Sandals | Woven Tassel Tote | Similar Fedora

My teacher friend raved over this bag, and she totally nailed it! The material is like a thick, woven Mexican blanket, with contrasting trim and handles. It’s chock-full of pockets and compartments, making it a great diaper bag too (so says my friend!), and even comes with the tassel! It comes in six colors and patterns, but this black and the blue stripe are my faves.

Woven Tassel Tote

I live in jean jackets pretty much year-round, so I was excited to find this affordable quality option. It’s thick and sturdy with just a touch of stretch, and the light wash is great for Spring. The stripes are already a fave of mine…thick, stretchy cotton that’s so soft.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS in the jacket, but need to size down one (it’s roomy through the chest, perfect for busty gals), and a small in the stripes.

Sofia Vergara Jean Jacket | Striped Tee | Sunglasses (comes in a set of 2!)

And finally, how darling is this combo?! Wide legs pants are everywhere this Spring, and these are so cute with the tortoise buttons and chambray stripes. Of course I paired it with my latest obsession, the $8 tee, and the fun striped tote (not just for the beach!)

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small tee. The pants are juniors so I sized up to a small…but needed to size up again (they’re pulling across the hips).

V-Neck Pocket Tee | Striped Wide Leg Pants | Woven Striped Beach Bag | Slide Sandals | Similar Fedora | Similar Sunglasses

So what do you think? Can you believe each of these outfits are under $50, most under $30!? Which pieces are your fave of the bunch? See more of my finds for the whole family here.

Love many of the pieces you shared but curious why you are clearly wearing Steve Madden sandals—you can see the label—but linked them to Walmart. Disappointing. And well, dishonest.

I am so sorry, Sarah! I have both sandals, and they genuinely look SO MUCH alike, that I honestly just grabbed the wrong pair when we went to shoot these pics. It was a genuine mistake, but I stand behind the Walmart pair for being a great option! xoxo

Hi Patty, hope your week has gotten better as it seems, given your response, to have started on a sour note. Lest you forget, Cassie’s blog is business. As a reader (customer), I see nothing wrong with asking a question regarding an item that she is trying to promote (sell) to her readers. Hope you had a great day!

          Sarah,
I think you were fine asking the question for clarification purposes, right up until you used the words “disappointing” and “dishonest”. You could’ve ended your response with the question and nothing further if that was truly the purpose of your response. It’s clear that by throwing those two words in at the end, your intention was to imply that Cassie was doing something shady. I’m pretty sure, as a long time “reader (customer),” I’ve never felt as if any of Cassie’s content/opinions have been anything more than truthful and I’m sure I’m not alone.

I updated some lamps and pillows from their online store for very little $. Brand new looks.

LOL — I know I was a little overly excited with this one, but I was seriously so blown away by how amazing these particular pieces are for the price. I honestly had no idea you could find things like this at Walmart. They’re great finds regardless if you’re a budget-shopper or not!

Walmart? Is this an April Fools joke? This doesn’t feel authentic to me and I don’t feel like I can continue to trust your recommendations like I have for so many years. I’m not trying to make you feel bad because I have adored you for years, but I would imagine other readers like me who have been shopping at Nordstrom and other similar retailers along with you for years aren’t suddenly going to start shopping at Walmart! It feels like you’re just grabbing a buck from any brand at this point!

    • Cassie says: April 1, 2019 at 10:36 am

Hi Julia! I understand your suspicions, but I’m honestly as surprised as you that I found such amazing things at Walmart! I actually posted several things from them last month, and had such an overwhelming response, I went looking for more. While Nordstrom will remain my go-to retailer (among others), many readers love having super-affordable options, as well! My goal is to provide great style ideas at all price points! xo

SP I have been following you for a while, I know that you can’t please everyone (clearly from some of these postings) but I personally wanted to thank you. As much as I would love to shop Nordstrom all of the time, personally I cannot afford it, so I choose to spend money there on staple pieces but it’s also fun to have some more affordable options like Walmart (personally I am a Target snob) ha! I just want to say thank you, I don’t see it as you trying to just get a buck and anyone who follows you would clearly know that you care about your followers and want to give all ladies options not just the ladies who can afford only high end items and that shouldn’t “water down” your integrity, instead it should be seen as your commitment to being part of a sisterhood among all women, not just a segment.

Same! I’m surprised to see you in Walmart clothing, honestly, but these are items that I can actually afford. I would love to see you share more Old Navy, target, and yes even Walmart, with us in the future.

Rude! She’s talking about a 7.00 t-shirt and cute looks that any one can afford… if you want to pay 67.00 for the same t-shirt from Nordstrom go ahead. I for one love a good bargain but then I don’t need a labels to prove anything.

Hi Molly! Agreed that many of their offerings are not made to last, but these pieces and brands featured are different! Some are the same quality as Madewell and J.Crew, but at a fraction of the cost. I’m simply giving new and different options…obviously not every post is for every one! xo

Hi, Cassie! Thank you for this post! When it comes to clothing, I don’t mind spending more on something that is classic and timeless, such as items from Nordstrom. However, I don’t have the budget to buy everything from there, so I like to supplement my wardrobe with some more affordable pieces. So, I appreciate you sharing great finds from other retailers, such as the Loft, Old Navy and now Walmart. For me, it’s a mix of higher-end and more affordable pieces. I know you can’t please everyone, but I hope you continue with these posts!

I couldn’t agree more, Susan! I’m all about purchasing higher priced timeless items from Nordstrom (or wherever for that matter) but for an item like a camo skirt that I will probably not wear time and time again, but would love to wear for awhile– the one from Wal-Mart would be perfect! Cassie- just like your Amazon haul posts, sale posts and truly any clothing post you make, I greatly appreciate you sharing a multitude of budget options. I love that you are taking all of your readers into consideration with your posts. Not all of us can afford Nordstrom prices all the time but still want to look nice, fashionable and put together. Cheers to you for being well-rounded! PLEASE keep it up. <3

So glad someone mentioned Old Navy — the quality is dismal and the products are considered by many readers to be expendable. Cassie posts about them, I read, glean what I can from how she styles the pieces and ultimately move on, no personal affront is made. No reason to shame her for growing her content and trying new things. Different posts for different folks. Read on if Walmart isn’t your thing.

I say it’s great to mix up expensive pieces with less expensive…and honestly, summer clothing just doesn’t last more than two seasons no matter how much I pay it seems…so I think the whole “low-high” price point idea is fabulous. It allows me to think about where to spend the bulk of my money. I appreciate all you show–Old Navy, JCP and Nordstrom as well as Walmart!

While I do understand those who are hesitant to approve choices from Walmart for fashion (at times the clothing is not substantial), I do endorse the choices for accessories. I have a similar sturdy beach bag (multicolored Mexican blanket pattern with tassels) purchased about 2 years ago from Walmart. It is sturdy but the zipper at the top is impossible to zip closed due to faulty construction. Frankly, this is not an issue for a bag that never needs closing and honestly some so-called designer items may also be poorly constructed. I do have sympathy for readers who are on a tight budget. I was that person 30 years ago with three growing kids and economic hard times. We all make trade offs. Thanks for showing us items at different price levels.

You make their fashions worth investing in…it certainly isn’t their website. Keep finding new outlets to surprise us with Cassie!

Even though Walmart is a national chain, the merchandise they carry will vary from store to store. Many of the items you highlighted are available online, but not in our store and seem of higher quality than what I see. Either way, consumers get what they pay for. I would expect to pay more money for a winter coat I will wear for many years, and I am fine paying much less for a pair of sandals that I will we are out over the summer by going to the beach and the lake every day. I appreciate all the items you share every day on your blog, and can make decisions about what I choose to purchase or not. Keep up the good work.

I actually went to Wal-Mart yesterday and these clothing items are not of good quality and do not look very good in person. The bag in black is kind of cute, but the cheap vinyl handles really turned me off.
I do buy clothing occasionally from Target, etc. sometimes it turns out to be a good deal, but it’s always hard to tell how long it will actually last. I wish these things looked and felt good in person because I can’t usually afford Nordstrom.

Most of the pieces I featured are only available online, which I found has a much larger and better selection. And unfortunately, real leather is pricey, so compromises have to be made to make pieces affordable (ie, faux-leather bag straps).

Hi everyone! This conversation got me thinking, and I had to ask myself why I, like some others, was turned off by this post. Cassie – this is a compliment to you that many of us shamelessly depend on your fantastic fashion sense and an ability to scout out a great product (even better when you find a good sale!) to make our shopping and fashion lives easy. But when you show these clothes from Walmart, perfectly styled and photographed and present them with the same enthusiasm that you present clothes of much higher quality from upscale retailers, it just feels a little off. I realize everyone has a different price point that they are looking to shop in and I don’t want this to diminish that fact. Many people will be thrilled. But IMO, Walmart really is below gap, target even old navy in terms of quality and some of us may order the clothes and be suprised by the quality we receive in the mail based on your recommendation. No offense, I’ve used your expertise to find great things more times than I deserve, and as always it’s your blog and your choice! Thanks for all you do – Patti

I totally understand and appreciate your point of view, Patti! I was genuinely surprised by the quality of these pieces I featured, and excited to style and share them. Regardless of the retailer or price point, they are great finds. And like all my shopping trips, there were also plenty of ‘misses’…but those things never make the blog because I’d never recommend anything to you, that I wouldn’t recommend to my best friend or mom. So while I’m not saying everything at Walmart is worth having and wearing, I’m saying these pieces are. And if they’re not for you, perhaps you gained some inspiration for styling combos from the post! xo

If you look hard, you can find super cute stuff on occasion at Wal-Mart. The v neck tshirt you featured is nice quality! I found it in my store (Raleigh NC). It took a bit of hunting (there were a couple of other tshirts by the same brand that were similar) but I finally found it! Honestly, I feel like if people want to have a cheap bag and it looks cute who cares? Thanks for showing cute looks at a lower price point! Nice work!

I love that you featured lower priced clothing that more readers would be able to afford. I don’t shop at Walmart for any item as a personal decision that has nothing to do with price/quality but more on how their company is run. Having said that, I love your blog and have purchased several items based on your recommendation. These comments, my goodness!! Guess people feel it’s okay to open their mouths and say whatever!! I am blessed to be able to afford to shop for myself and my family at Nordstrom, however, unless it is a timeless, classic piece or an item that I need to last (my kids’ shoes), why not look at other retailers? I like to keep my money where it counts and that’s in the bank! I’m curious if you get as much pushback on your Amazon posts? I doubt it!! Keep doing what you do!

You look darling in ALL of these outfits (but let’s face it—YOU would look great in a paper bag!). Cute finds! Love the tote especially (and that embroidered black top)! The cardi in pink is already sold out. I also love Nordstrom for some quality wear, but I’m also a fan of Target, Old Navy, Amazon, etc for some lesser-priced items that I know won’t last forever. So this is a fun post! I did notice that you, Sheaffer, Jo’Lynn, and a few other bloggers recently have had Walmart posts. Seriously curious: do certain retailers offer more bonus incentives at certain times, which is why we see a push for certain brands then? (Smart if so!) 🙂 Thanks for what you do.

Hey girlie! So happy you like the the post and styles! You may have noticed my disclaimer at the bottom of my post that this one was sponsored by Walmart. Brands approach us with paid collaborations, usually within similar time frames so they get a big push. I can’t speak for the other contracts, but mine allows me full freedom to choose the items I like, speak honestly about them, and post during a time conducive to my calendar and readers. I always allow time to order and try the products for myself before committing to working with a new (to me) brand. Hope that sheds a little more light on the process! I’m all about full transparency! xoxo

Walmart has upped it’s game…The store will match their online prices for such items such as Christmas toys if you alert the checkout. Their floor plants are amazing and cheap. If you shop online for health items or spices etc., and spend a minimum, they ship for free and almost always these items are cheaper than elsewhere….now, I need to check out the white t-shirts because they normally only last a season before pitting and graying despite the brand and cost. Thanks!

Love the variety of price points you share! Question: Are the pieces you wanted to size down to XS for (dress, etc) actually available in XS? I don’t see it listed as an option on the WM website. Also, any idea if they will restock soon? Understandable due to the cuteness & prices, but many sizes/pieces are sold out. Thanks, Cassie!

thanks katie!! those pieces weren’t available at all in XS when I ordered…not sure if they were sold out, or just not produced in that size. I wanted to indicate my size preference though, so people didn’t assume they should size up. xo

I agree!! THANK YOU SO MUCH for keeping in mind those that can’t always afford the Nordstrom brands. I think it’s awesome that you are considering your other fans that may not be able to afford the high(er) end brands. We want to look cute too!

I love this post! I actually purchase a lot of my kiddos clothing from Walmart because they ruin it after just a few wears and the quality is surprisingly pretty good! I have also been loving their converse knockoffs, which are only $9! I am a teacher and they are so comfy for casual Fridays! I have all the other teachers wearing them now too! I love your variety of retailers and would love to see some more Target as well!

Keep the Walmart reco’s coming. I just bought the beach tote & tees and am v happy with look, quality and price. I also shop more $ retailers but it’s all about the high/low mix. And frankly I’m almost never in a Walmart so shopping your links is the best. You do all the work for me & I just get the best looks for fantastic price. Love your content!
