Mudroom | The Reveal

I’d like us all to pause and recognize that I’ve managed to finish and share this new space in just three weeks! THREE WEEKS! Well, three weeks and one year if you want to get technical. And actually, it’s not the full room since I’m still hemming and hawing over cabinet hardware and other finishing touches.

But whatever, I’ve got the Mudroom side done, and it’s glorious. In fact, angels sing when I walk in. It’s a whole chorus of them when I find backpacks actually hanging on the hooks! I’m shocked by the amount of storage and function we were able to squeeze into this little nook, and already know it’s going to make our mornings…heck, our lives…run more efficiently!

The large hooks are perfect for all sorts of bags and backpacks, and the baskets and drawers provide much needed hidden storage. And since this space is the true drop zone of the house, it was the perfect spot for a Command Center, too. Now there’s a organized bin for every person in the family…including the furry one! (Because yes, Maggie comes with paperwork, reminders and appointments, too!) And let’s not overlook that fabulous IKEA Maskros light!

I wanted to utilize the small slice of empty wall, so of course I hit up IKEA for inspiration and smart organizational pieces for everything I needed. I’m a huge fan of the KVISSLE metal wall rack, and they’re perfect for our family of five! A quick coat of paint helped the cork board blend right in, and the clock (only $13!) comes in handy for getting to school on time!

We added the narrow shelf at the last-minute, and it’s a great spot to tuck away phones and devices, along with smaller items we need to grab quickly, like pencils, sunglasses and keys. Thanks to the addition of outlets, and IKEA’s slim charging pads, we even have a charging station!

Sugarplum Tip: These wireless charging pads are pure genius, but do require a special case to work with iPhones. Fingers crossed Apple catches up with the wireless charging technology soon!!

The drawers now conceal the dog food and trash can, and the wider middle drawers are perfect for dirty shoes and sports equipment. Do you hear the angels yet?!

Bin with Flip-Top Lid (available in three sizes)

Drawer Pulls (smaller pulls)

We’re still figuring out what we’ll store in the baskets, but it will likely be pool towels (this room is near the backyard), along with sunscreen, bug spray and other things we need before heading out. In the Winter, they’ll house hats and mittens, too.

Clearly this new Mudroom and Family Command Center makes me ridiculously happy!

Side-Tie Shirt | White Jeans | Hoop Earrings

The Laundry Room side is realllllly close, so hopefully I’ll have that for you soon. But for now, I’m going to bask in the joy of all this amazing function and organization! Do you have a dedicated Drop Zone or Command Center? Are you inspired to create one now?! It only requires a few key pieces and a little space…and of course, the desire to actually utilize it!

That room is gorgeous! (Did I just say that about a mudroom)

I love the thought of those little organizers on the wall for each family member. It’s a great place for it, so everyone can grab what they need out of it on the way out the door in the morning.

The phone case has been sold out for ages…all of us iPhone users trying to get it! I’m sure Amazon or Ebay has some, but hopefully IKEA restocks them soon! I’m hanging on to the wireless charging pad until that day!

We went with IKEA for cabinets and I just can’t wait to see it finished! Hopefully Apple does develope wireless charging soon. I always admire IKEA’s charging devices!

I’ve been eyeballing those wall slots at Ikea for awhile now, hoping to find a spot in our office/guest room for them. Mr Wonderful loves to stack things in different piles all over the house. I’ve gradually trained him to pile them into flat baskets I can quickly move when company comes but I’m hoping he’ll love a wall hung filing system so much he’ll make the switch. A girl can dream, can’t she?
Love your drop-zone laundry room. I’ve got a bookshelf behind our entry door. I can only envy yours….

SO BRILLIANT y’all put an outlet up in the shelves!!! Brilliant!!
Love the clock, reminds me of the antique my mom has. I’d like to put one of those in EACH ROOM for the kids to get moving in the morning, ha! =)
Love the light too, my daughter has had that in her bedroom for 3 years, she loves it. My handyman switched out the ‘socket’ (not sure if that’s the right name) so we can put a higher watt LED lightbulb, sheds WAY more light which is nice.

    A few questions…
    – I couldn’t find the hooks, the link took me to the IKEA main page, I searched but couldn’t find them.
    – Where did you get your raised dog food/water dish? We have one but would love one for outside water.
    – Can you by chance share what kind of wood your contractor used? I’d love to know what the upper cubes are made of (I’ve never seen something so thin and I love it), the strips going down the wall (SUCH a lovely detail), bench top (GORGEOUS!), and drawers. I don’t think it’s from Lowes/H.D.?

Thanks for sharing and congrats!!!! Mudrooms make me feel like a PRINCESS! =)

Thanks so much, Cari!! That’s a genius hack on the IKEA light!! The hooks, unfortunately, aren’t online. I think they are being discontinued, but your local store likely still has them there. The dog food bowl is from HomeGoods ages ago! They have a really good pet accessories collection, so I’d check there. As for the wood, I’m not sure!! He built it all from scratch to fit my dimensions, and I asked for simple and clean lines! I hope this helps! xo

Your Mudroom is A-mazing! We just recently had our kitchen remodel and the one thing I say is that I wish I did a hidden charging station. I do have one strange question. Are your hooks mounted on drywall? I’m working on a small mudroom area myself and I want to hang hooks on drywall but am concerned about them pulling out over time because of the way they are used. I just didn’t know if you had any secrets because ours won’t be going into studs.

    • Cassie wrote:

Thanks Heidi!! Our hooks are anchored in the drywall…but there’s also a layer of plywood on the wall because of the built-in Mudroom component, so that helps. You’ll definitely need to anchor them with 50+ pounds anchors if you’re going straight to drywall. Kid’s backpacks are crazy heavy!!! xo

Looks amazing- so innovative! Are the baskets from Pottery Barn? Also, would you be able to share the dimensions of the storage space, area? I am looking at adding a storage area to a small room and would love a guideline of space that works!

    Many thanks!

  15. This space turned out so well and doing it in three weeks, major perk! Any addition that adds both style and functionality is a win in my books. The hardware you picked really keeps the lines clean and modern!

Working on an area like this right now too….and my exact comment was I need a place for the kids to hang their backpacks…and once I have the space….they will probably still throw them on the floor right as they walk in the door! Haha Looks nice and clean and well thought out as always!

Hi! I am wondering where the baskets are from? The link you gave for similar baskets don’t seem to be the same dimensions. I am having a heck of a time finding baskets to fit our mud room and your baskets seem to be perfect (not to deep but wider than some). It looks fantastic!

    Thanks

I had the same problem of not being able to reach over my washer and dryer so I had the cupboard spaced away from the wall four inches. You might need to move them even farther forward depending on the depth of your equipment.
