Hi Sugarplum!

If You Like Pina Coladas

March 6, 2014

I’m not one to sit still for long, and as much as I love home, I love to get the heck out of town. And I’m not picky…a weekend road-tripping to small Texas towns, or floating through Venice…I love it all! In fact, the main reason we DIY, is so we can save the budget for traveling.

Usually, Mr. Sugarplum and I take a kid-free, marriage-saving, f-bomb-dropping trip in the Spring, but this year we had the opportunity to bring the kids along on our adventure. Actually, that’s Adventure with a capital A, because we’re going to Puerto Rico!

We’ll stay a few nights in Old San Juan…

Old San Juan, Porto Rico

Spend a day trekking through El Yunque Rainforest…

Then fly a teeny-tiny ‘How much do you weigh, ma’am’ puddle-jumper to the island of Vieques.

via

Word is wild horses roam in abundance on the no-stop-light island. And whoa, Nelly, is Babygirl psyched about that! #seewhatIdidthere? Remember the horse transition we started in her room?

The trip will be here before we know it, and I’ve been busy planning, and scouting for deals. Have you been to Puerto Rico? I’d love to hear your favorite experiences and restaurants. I share tips for all the places we’ve been here, and I’d love to hear yours on this beautiful island.

My husband and I went to San Juan and Rincon last year – in Old San Juan we did El Morro and had Puerto Rican food – try the mofongo and my favorite, tostones. It's a very unique place with American chains but a Spanish and Carribbean feel. Happy traveling!

Oh, man! With all the frigid weather we've had this year, I have been longing for a warm place. Actually, Puerto Rico came up in a vacation conversation recently when we were looking for non-continental-US places we could travel relatively cheaply. We usually hit the beach every couple years, and do "city" vacations the opposite years. This year is a beach year, thank goodness! Sounds like you are combining the two, which is even better.

I hope you have a wonderful time! We'll be having a stay-cation this year. The kids have lived here their whole lives and haven't been to any of the cool places we'll be visiting. But, I'm super jealous for you and your kiddos, especially after all the yucky cold weather we've been having. Bring me back a seashell! 🙂

We went for 10 days with our 3 kids about 3.5 years ago when they were 6, 9 and 11. My husband's parents are from PR, so we alternated between sight seeing and visiting extended family. The kids loved flying kites at the fort in Old San Juan and the beaches the best. There is also a cool trip where you snorkel in a bioluminescent bay. Have fun!

Ask about swimming in the bioluminescent bay in Vieques! If conditions are right swimmers appear to be glowing in the dark during a night swim!

We went last year in April and it was amazing! Our two favorite restaurants were Dragonfly and Marmalade. Like, they were ridiculously good! The rain forest was awesome with so many beautiful flowers and birds. Have a blast!

We went to Puerto Rico for our honeymoon and LOVED it! Make sure you make it down to the beach for body boarding and go to the Bioluminescent Bay for Kayaking – it is SO NEAT! You'll have a blast in the rainforest – we went on a tour that included hiking and ziplining and it was fantastic. Have an awesome time!

We did the rain forest tour and it was wonderful. Also check into going on a night time guided kayak tour. The water lights up with phosphorescence when you run your hand through it. It looks like twinkling stars…really cool.

I will have to live vicariously through you and your family. I was there about 9 years ago, but we stayed at the El Conquistador and never really left (it was for a training conference). We I didn't really get to see any sights. We did take a scuba boat over to St. Thomas. That was fun. I would love to go back. Have a great time.

We were just there a year ago for our honeymoon and had the best time. The bioluminescent bay is a MUST do and our favorite restaurant there was Marmalade, although I'm not sure how kid friendly it may be. It's the only vacation I've ever been on that I wish I could go back to right away. We stayed at El Convento and they had two excellent places right there to eat at: nispero and pizza y birra. I loved old san juan so much. You'll have a blast! Oh, and there are tons of cats walking around OSJ. If they have a notch in their ear, they've been neutered and treated for mites, fleas, etc, so they're safe to pet! I made friends with most of them.

My husband's grandmother is from Puerto Rico and we spent two weeks there for our honeymoon in 2009. My absolute favorite part was the two nights we spent in Rincon–a small town on the west coast. We rode horses on the beach, enjoyed the breathtaking views, and soaked up the peace and quiet. The rainforest was a close second! There's also an awesome little bakery in San Juan that we visited almost every morning called Kasalta and an inexpensive and family-friendly local restaurant called Bebos (hubby's family went there every few years while he was growing up and those were both favorite spots). Oh and the open air market that serves cocktails on the plaza at happy hour! I think it's called Plaza del Mercado. Just thinking about it is making me nostalgic!

Oh and if you're not too creeped out by the idea there's a park in OSJ where you can hand feed pigeons. They'll perch all over you! It's a lot of fun for kids (or kids at heart).
