Hello friends! Today we’re taking a break from projects to talk bloggy bidness. I love blog comments…like, looove comments! I love them like popcorn with Milk Duds (which is a lot!). I even receive every comment via email, so I’m sure not to miss any. I’ve talked about making friends in this awesome blog community, and the way to do that is to strike up online dialog. And I can only do that if I’m able to respond to your comment, or other bloggers are able to respond to mine.
I’m talking to you, No Reply Blogger Person! If you have no idea what I’m talking about, then I’m probably talking about you! How about some visuals to clear things up?
Here’s what my email looks like when I receive a comment from someone who has their Blogger account set “properly.”
See, there’s an email address tied to Amanda’s ID, so I’m able to respond to her question easily by just replying to the email.
Here’s a comment when it comes from someone who has their account on lock-down (probably unintentionally).
Oh man, MicahTj, I’d love to tell you I found the glasses at a thrift store, and I’m pretty sure they still sell them at World Market. But I can’t respond to you because your email is blocked. (Class, we’re not picking on MicahTj, we’re only using her as an example!) Since she’s the dreaded ‘No Reply Blogger,’ I am left with three options:
- I answer the question with a comment on my own post, and hope she goes back and checks it. But who actually revisits a blog post? I don’t even remember what blog I’m reading half the time!?
- Search her out online and hope to find contact information. Let’s be honest, this isn’t going to happen. I’m busy hot gluing stuff.
- Ignore the question and feel like a complete ass for it.
I don’t like any of these options, so let’s get to the solution and fix this naggy bloggy problem. Log in to your Blogger/Google account and click ‘Dashboard.’ It looks like this:
Then click ‘Edit Profile.’ There you’ll see a line that reads, ‘Show My Email Address’. Click the box and be liberated! The email address you enter here is simply where you wish to receive responses. Bloggers shouldn’t won’t spam you or hunt you down, and no one will advertise your email address on a banner behind a plane. Make sure to save your new Setting.
Now our interactions can look more like this!
This fix is for Blogger/Google people. You smarty-pants WordPressers are too high-tech for me, and I have no idea how to help you. But I do know that I’m not able to respond to most of your comments.
So let’s be friends! Please update your settings so we can get to chatting!*
*Disclaimer: I do not respond to every comment (you know, because of the whole busy-hot-gluing thing), but I will always answer the questions!*

SO glad you took the time to post this. I'm re-posting this because I usually go with option #3 🙂
SOOO glad you posted this! and can I just re-post this to all my no-repliers too! is oh so frustrating and usually they are the ones asking a question not just a comment. grrrr
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the tip! I was one of those "No Reply Bloggers", not on purpose though! 🙂
Oh this one drives me nuts because I always end up going with the third option and feel like a turd. I'm going to have to send people over to check out your post. Perfectly done!
YES MA'AM!!! I have a hard enough time trying to email everyone back that actually has a return address. I swear it's the ones that don't that ask such specific questions too. I might just have to send everyone over here today to check out your directions.

I'm famous! My pic was on Hi Sugarplum! Okay, wait…that's not what this post is about, is it? 😉
Thanks for posting this. I've done a similar post before, and it just seems like it needs repeating…a lot! I think that a lot of new bloggers just don't know that it's a good thing to have their email on their profile.
I'm not able to reply to all of my comments any more either. It makes me sad, but the "no reply" comments I get in my emails are usually the first to go because I know I don't have time to go clicking around to find the person's blog and leave them a comment with a reply to their question…
Hah! Love this post! No reply commenters can drive me bonkers– especially if someone asks a question and I set off to track them down and they don't have a blog or a current blog.
Love this post – I always feel so bad about the noreply-comment@bloggers!!
I'm 99.9% sure I've got this covered….but it's that darn .1% that is making me unsure and starting to sweat so I'm off to check.
Thanks for the tutorial! I'm relatively new to the blogging world and could not recall how my profile was set so you had me panicked there for a minute..turns out I'm good to go…now I just need to pester you with design questions, lol! Oh ps – I picked up new dining chairs from World Market this weekend, got home, opened the boxes and NO CHAIR LEGS!?! Then I remembered your post about YOUR dining chairs and where they were hiding, and voila…found my legs hiding in the same spot! So thanks for helping me find my legs : )
I posted something similar to this a while back, I love it when I am able to reply!
holy-crap-n-jack!! I was one of those!!! and I never knew it! Its like walking about with toilet paper stuck to your shoe or spinach in your teeth and you walk around thinking everything is cool until finally someone is nice enough to tell you!! Thank you!!! I just fixed it-let me know if it works 🙂
This is super-helpful. I was very unaware of the etiquette on this — and now I know!
Thanks for posting this Cassie! "No Reply" always makes me feel like the victim in a hit and run 🙁 I love my readers and reply to every comment too 🙂 It is the polite Canadian thing to do, dontcha know?
Happy Monday!
Thank you!!! I had NO idea! Great tip!

I just went and checked and sure enough my box was not checked! Thanks for the tip!
Great tip! And good point on the replies!
Thanks Cassie! I made the change–you were right, I was completely clueless that I was hiding my email. Great post. Love reading your blog!!
Andrea
Yes, THANK YOU for this post!!! So much better when we can reply directly!
Nice job breaking it down girlie! Hope this post spreads like wildfire!!! #3 is what I usually do – me no likey. 😉
You rock girl! I was just thinking the other day that I need to post something about this! I feel bad when I can't respond to others. I just added a little reminder post leading to your blog today! Hopefully we can be able to reach more bloggy friends!
Thanks! I need to post about this as well – wish more people had their emails available so I could answer questions! I am thinking of installing disquis on my blog, maybe that might make it easier? Who knows…
Have fun hot glueing, whatever it is that you are glueing!
This is why I love the Disqus commenting system. It emails me when a blogger responds to my comment on their blog post. So the blogger doesn't have the extra steps to email me, I don't have to go back and see if they've answered. I've got mine set up to still allow anonymous comments in case anyone out there is still nervous about leaving an email.
You rock. I will need to link to this soon. I feel so horrible when I can't respond. Or . . .being a little lame. . I type out a whole response push send and then realize it's no reply. Even worse!
Yay, thanks for the tip! I've done as I was told 😉 Happy Monday!
haha – you crack me up! Hope mine works!!! I'll double check mine!!!
haha – you crack me up! Hope mine works!!! I'll double check mine!!!
It's true that being able to email will definitely allow a friendship to blossom so it's nice to give everyone the tips and tools to do it. A nice blogger took the time to email me directly last year and give directions on how to do this and it kinda changed my life:)
Agh, I didn't realize I was being so anti-social! Thanks for the heads up. 😉
I'm so glad you wrote this! ha. With visuals. Some people just don't know any better and it's so frustrating!
I was "one of those" and didn't know it either! Thanks for sharing this great tip!
Thanks for the tip! (TWSS) Totally agree!
Thanks for posting this. I always hate when I can't respond either. Double-checked mine and I'm good. Have a great day!
Oh my word! I am ROLLING right now! Hahaha…I kept wondering why I never heard back about your sweet glasses! I have fixed myself and now I won't ever have to be the "bad" example on a blog again! Thanks so much for not only letting me know to check WM, but also for showing me how to fix my email thingy!
Happy Valentine's!!
Thanks for sharing this. I didn't even realize I was the dreaded no reply blogger! Love your blog- you are so funny!
Amy@homehappyhome
Oh, I so HATE the no-reply!
Especially when the commenter really wants to know something!
Thanks for the time it took to make your tutorial. It helps ALL of us bloggers!

Thank you for letting folks like me (those who have no clue) know about this little tidbit. Appreciate you taking the time!
I appreciate you blogging geniuses! As a new blogger, tips like this one are very very helpful. Thank you for sharing and keep up the great blogging!
I think I need to repost this on my blog. For realz. Would you send me the html?
LOVE. Can you come guest post this on my blog? No? You don't want to write this entire post all over again? Okay, then… can I just link to it and hope everyone out there sees it?! Thanks for posting this! 🙂
If you were a teacher, I'd be your pet! This is the best post I've ever read about the dreaded no-reply blogger!
That's fantastic! I'm one of the ones who didn't even know I had my settings on no reply. All better now.
I don't have/use blogger (as I don't have a blog). does my email address show up for you when I comment? I couldn't figure out how to do it with your instructions.

Great post with great info! I think I got mine fixed now. Thanks!

I used to have my email address attached to my blog, but then I updated to the new blogger and it synced with google+ and I can't for the life of me figure out why my email doesn't show up OR how to fix it.
If you know how to fix this PLEASE HELP ME!!
rundreamcook@gmail.com
Thanks for posting this! I had no idea that is what my settings were set to! So now I changed mine and am now more comment/blogger friendly!
Thanks for letting me know about my email and how to fix it! I really appreciate the help!!
Thank you so much for posting this! i'll have to pass it along, so many bloggers that I leave comments for never received them bc I didn't notice the no-reply thing at first!!!!!
Thanks for posting this. I also hate when I get the dreaded Noreply blogger!
Jen
Excellent post! I went in and checked my settings. I had it half right! So, thanks for setting me straight!
Thank you so much! I am a wordpresser, but have been hearing from blogger bloggers that I am no-reply…I went to blogger.com and I had an account, I have no idea how or why, probably because google is taking over the world. But I might have updated it. I didn't have the "show my email" option, the new box I check was "enter my email again"…I guess we'll see with this comment if it worked. 🙂
Karah @ thespacebetweenblog
Or maybe fixed it now since I hadn't save my profile updates before the last comment. 🙂
Karah
Thanks for the info. People said they are also having troubles just leaving comments. Any suggestions there?
Wow I just saw where you commented my blog and I think I have this very problem! I don't know how to fix though on the new blogger interface. My email is laney.olemiss@yahoo.com if you could help me figure it out I'd really really appreciate it!!!
Thank you for this!!!! Charmaine from "My bestfriend Craig" directed me to your blog, and being a relative newbie to this, your post was definitely helpful. 🙂
OMG, I had no idea I was in the "No reply club" until Chairmane from "My Best Friend Craig" sent me to your amazing tutorial! So happy to be able to respond directly to folks. lawd a mercy, you are a life saver!
You are awesome! Thanks for the tutorial… 🙂
Now, how do you get people to leave comments in the first place??? 😉
Shannon
Hey Sugarplum (cute :))
Just came across this but I think Blogger has done their thang like they always do and change things. Dashboard is no longer there and I THINK I changed this. But can you update this to how to do it now? Or am I sleep deprived and am just not seeing the Dashboard tab?
TheJugglingTeacher
This is brilliant. Thank you for making it such clear instructions! All fixed on my end now, which is such a relief 🙂
