{Five Ways} Floral Midi Skirts

Hello, Friday…come to mama!! I’m so excited for the weekend…first up is the fun back-to-school event I’m hosting at the Container Store…and then our son finally comes home from two weeks of camp! I’m ready for my little tribe to be reunited!

For today’s Fashion Friday, I’m sharing a new-to-me look…a-line midi skirts! I’ve always loved the look, but shied away from them because I assumed I was too short petite (I’m 5’4″). But I fell hard for this bright floral number, and the price was so reasonable, I thought I’d take a chance.

Turns out, the full skirt is wildly flattering, and the length, dare I say, makes you appear taller!

This won’t be a typical {Five Ways} post, in that most of the looks are equally ‘dressy’, but that’s the nature of this skirt. If you’re tall, you could certainly dress it down more with flat sandals, but I found heels more flattering for my height.

ONE |  But that doesn’t mean you’re resigned to a single look…the floral midi skirt offers so many outfit options! The key is to keep your top fitted (the skirt is all the volume you need), the waist defined, and your shoes streamlined (to lengthen the leg that is visible). And of course pattern-mixing is always encouraged around here, but with a large floral like this, keep your second pattern small.

This top is still pretty full when tucked in, so I tied it at the waist to create more definition. Rolling the sleeves higher on the arm helps slim by showing more skin, and further defining the waist.

TWO |  This look is a little more subdued with the crisp white shirt…and you could certainly pair it with neutral heels and bag…but I wanted to show you the fun pop of a second color and pattern. If you’re color or pattern shy, try starting with just the colorful bag, or just the leopard shoes. I pile them all together because that’s my style, but these posts are meant to inspire you to make them applicable to your style and wardrobe.

THREE |  Don’t rule out dresses worn as tops…I loved the color and neckline of this dress, and it paired beautifully with the skirt. Obviously this trick only works when the skirt fully covers the bottom of the dress! Notice too, how much more slimming the outfit is by exposing more skin on top and wearing neutral shoes.

FOUR |  Pairing the skirt with a lightweight sweater and darker shoes will take it in to cooler months, extending it’s wear-time. Which is great, because I want to wear it all the time!

FIVE |  Of course I paired the floral with stripes, too. Because I can never help myself. But just like the gingham, keep the scale of your stripe opposite of the floral scale. Throw on a fitted jean jacket and this outfit is ready for Fall, too.

I’ll admit, when I first put the skirt on, I was a little overwhelmed by the fuller shape and amount of fabric, but then was surprised by just how much fun it was to wear. And clothes are supposed to be fun and make you feel happy, right?! Not to mention, you’ll receive countless compliments from strangers every time you wear it!

Which looks are your favorites? Do you own a floral midi skirt? Happy weekend, lovebugs!
