Dressing Room Diaries

Cheers to Friday, friends! I can not even begin to thank you for all the love and support you gave me, and the Gibson x Hi Sugarplum Collection this week! I am blown away by your enthusiasm and excitement, and am thrilled you love the pieces as much as I do.

And Nordstrom has heard you loud and clear…you want colorful, affordable, quality pieces that mix and match into a bevy of outfits. Yes, I said bevy. It’s a fun word to say. Kind of like my other favorite word: moot. But I digress.

Today I’ve got a new Dressing Room Diaries for you…and this one is a little special because I’m sharing all my own pieces (I don’t think I’ll ever get used to saying that!). But instead of perfectly styled, I’m showing them in the format you like best…real and raw, with close-up views and real-girl fit tips. And of course I brought my darling Mama Sugarplum along for her take. Let’s get to it!

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries

Fit Note: I’m 5’4″-ish, 120 pounds-isa (depending on the week’s taco count), with a slight pear shape. My usual size is an XS/0. Mama Sugarplum is 5’1″, with an hourglass figure. We typically wear the same size, but she sometimes goes with petite.

Let’s start with the Captiva Romper, since it’s a definite favorite! It’s a drapey, woven material that has a fully-adjustable drawstring waist, and buttons up the front. You can button it all the way for a crewneck fit, or leave a button or two open for a sassier vibe.

I love that the legs are a little wide, so the fabric skims your body instead of clinging. Ain’t nobody wants anything clinging to their thighs! #amiright?! And hello, pockets. The shorts have a 4-inch inseam, so they’re mildly modest. It comes in this black, and two fun florals.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS here, and you can see there is less blousing on the top (I have a long torso). In the styled photos, I’m wearing a small, and it has more drape…so depending on the look/fit you prefer, you can go with your usual size or size up one.

Mom insisted she couldn’t wear a romper, then promptly changed her mind once she tried it on! There was actual dancing involved when she saw herself in it! (Dancing is the true indicator of clothes love!) She’ll add a jean jacket for times she wants more coverage.

Fit Tip: She’s bustier than I am, so she’s wearing a small. She preferred the length of the regular over the petite, and the drawstring allowed her to get the fit she needed in the waist.

I love a skirt with movement, and the Navio Pleated Skirt is just begging for a twirl. It’s fully-lined with a side zip closure, and has preppy mini pleats. It fits at your natural waist, creating a subtle a-line shape that’s universally flattering. It’s perfect for work or church, but easily adapts for more casual occasions. It comes in this classic navy, and two fun prints.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS, and it falls just above the knee.

Bonita Ruffled Tank | Navio Pleat Skirt | Wedges | Tassel Earrings

Fit Tip: Here I’m wearing a petite XS…it’s about 1-inch shorter, but really snug in the waist. So if you opt for petite, go up one from your regular size. (It’s true to size for those that always wear petite.)

Bonita Ruffled Tank | Navio Pleat Skirt | Sandals in ‘Makeup’

Mom prefers the longer length for the office, so she’s in a regular small. Please note her popped collar…which she did on her own! #prouddaughter

Another great skirt for work and weekend wear, the Monterey Pull-On Skirt is easy, comfy and effortless. It’s a woven material that pulls on with a wide, elastic waistband and operational drawstring…and pockets! And worth noting, the pockets don’t add any bulk, but instead lay flat on the hips! The hemline is just above my knee, but does go up a bit on the side for a leg-lengthening effect. It comes in this fun blue floral, and a classic black.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS, but petite sizing is available for shorter lengths.

Kahala Bow Tee | Monterey Floral Skirt | Wedges

Mom is wearing a small for more room in the waist and hips, and prefers the longer length of the regular.

This skirt will be in heavy rotation this Summer…so comfy and easy to wear, and with magical figure-flattering abilities! Seriously, it’s thick, double-lined knit, so it holds everything in, while smoothing you out. The length can be adjusted simply by pulling it up or down on your waist, but I’m partial to this longer, elongating length. It’s as soft and easy as pajamas, but super chic. It will be my go-to replacement for shorts.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS and it’s a figure-hugging fit. Sizing up one would make it less body-conscious. You’ll want the petite if you’re under 5’4″

Bonita Ruffled Tank | Fornillo Pencil Skirt | Flat Sandals | Tassel Earrings

I knew this Bonita Racerback Tank would be a hit, and so far it’s your No. 1 style! It’s the perfect combination of your favorite cotton tank, with a flattering racerback shape and feminine ruffle detail. I love the longer length for wearing out or knotted, or just a casual half-tuck in shorts or jeans. It comes in 7 bright colors, and even a polka dot (your top choice!). You’re going to want more than one…just ask anyone who’s tried it!

Fit Tip: I”m wearing a regular XS.

Mom is wearing an XS, but would prefer a small for more room through the chest.

Speaking of ruffles…let’s talk about the cutest gingham top ever!! The print already gets my preppy-loving heart racing, and then we went added ruffle trim to the sleeves and neck…and even a tie in the back! Let’s just say there was squealing going on when this one came out of production.

It’s a soft, yet sturdy, cotton with a slight texture. It fits straight through the body and looks darling worn tucked or untucked. I also love that the ruffles hold their shape, and don’t droop. It comes in this punchy blue and black gingham.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS.

Kamari Gingham Top | White Jeans | Flat Sandals | Tassel Earrings

Mom is wearing an XS, but prefers a petite small for added chest room. I’m wearing the Bonita Ruffle Racerback in ‘Space Dye Stripe’…the gingham top comes in black, too, but I forgot to bring it for this try-on session!

Sidenote: If something is sold out in your size, consider going up a size in the petite! For instance, a regular XS and petite small are very similar in size for this gingham top!

Bonita Ruffled Tank | White Jeans | Kamari Gingham Top | Sandals | Earrings

Okay, moving on to the darling Kahala Tie Sleeve Top…probably one of the softest pieces in the collection! The sleeve has a ruffle trim, with an added tie in a contrasting fabric. The tie is either cotton poplin or eyelet, depending on the color. It’s special enough to elevate a basic jeans and a tee, but also so fun dressed up with a skirt. It comes in three great colors, plus a black and white stripe.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS, and it’s a relaxed, full fit.

Kahala Tie Sleeve Top | White Jeans | Flat Sandals

I tried sizing down for a different look, and love it even more! The smaller size raised the shoulder and shortened the sleeve, but maintained the relaxed fit. It’s also a little shorter, but still plenty long for tucking.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XXS petite, so if you prefer a closer fit, definitely size down.

Kahala Tie Sleeve Top | White Shorts | Sandals

Here’s the same tee in navy, also an XXS Petite. The detail on the sleeve is so fun, don’t you think?!

Kahala Tie Sleeve Top | White Shorts | Sandals

We’re both wearing regular XS in this pic, so choose your size depending on the fit you prefer. I promise you’ll love the feel of this top!!

Kahala Tie Sleeve Top | White Jeans | Sandals

I’ll have this tee in my closet for years to come…it’s so chic and classic, and will provide countless outfit options! I’ve paired it with every skirt in my Collection, plus jeans and shorts…and can’t wait to layer it under jackets in the Fall! It comes in solid white, and two perfect stripes.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small.

Siesta Tee | White Jeans | Flat Sandals | Tassel Earrings

For comparison, here’s the XS…a little more fitted through the body and shoulder, but still a great longer length.

Siesta Tee | White Shorts | Flat Sandals

Simple jeans and a tee, but look how great Mama Sugarplum looks! The elbow-length sleeve is so slimming and flattering, too.

Fit Tip: We’re both wearing small.

Siesta Tee | White Jeans | Flat Sandals | Tassel Earrings

Next up is the Flamenco Ruffle Dress…the quintessential Summer shirtdress! Made of crisp cotton poplin, the dress has a forgiving fit that creates a flattering silhouette for all body types. Adjust the tie to your natural waist, and you’re instantly slimmer. People will stop you in the street to ask about this dress, so be prepared for extra attention!

It comes in this blue stripe, hot pink and black gingham. All look darling with flat sandals, wedges or strappy heels, making it so versatile for tons of occasions.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS

We’re both wearing XS, but mom would prefer a small petite for more room through the chest, and slightly shorter length.

I named this tee after my beloved Anna Maria Island because I knew I’d want to wear it every day. We set out to make the perfect tee, and went through more fit revisions on this piece than any other in the Collection…it was that important to us! And I’m thrilled that we kept at it, because it’s absolute perfection!

The v-neck is at just the right dip to be flattering, but not too revealing, the sleeve the perfect length with a feminine twist detail, and a curved hem for wearing loose and untucked. Plus, it feels like pajamas! It comes in seven great colors, including these stripes and polka dots.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing regular XS

Mom wears a small for a looser fit in the arm.

The Monterosso Tie Cami shot to the top of your favorites list, and several patterns sold out quickly! But fortunately we were able to restock. It’s one of those tops that works for so many occasions, and even though it’s lightweight and comfortable, you feel totally pulled together. The straps are adjustable, as is the tie…and the v-neck is tacked together to prevent wardrobe malfunctions!

It comes in this red dot, palm print, navy dot and classic black. Wear it with everything from cut-offs to work slacks!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS

Monteross0 Cami | White Jeans | Wedges

Mom is wearing an XS…the adjustable strap allows us to customize the fit for our different bust sizes.

Monteross0 Cami | White Jeans | Wedges

The only top you’ll need for Summer nights…this tie-back halter is all kinds of sassy and flattering! The cut of the halter neckline creates the most flattering peek of shoulder for all body types, and the tie allows you to adjust the fit, as well. It’s a high-low hem, with full coverage across the bum, and breezy woven material.

It comes in pink, blue dots and a vibrant coral floral, and looks darling with sandals for day, and even tucked in to a pencil skirt for work.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS. If your size is sold out, I’d encourage you to try a size up in the petites for this one.

Maroma Halter Top | White Jeans | Wedges | Tassel Earrings

We’re both wearing XS. Isn’t the cut so pretty on mom’s shoulders?!

Maroma Halter Top | White Jeans | Wedges

And lastly, lets talk joggers!! The best little pant for running around, chasing kids, and travel…so soft and lightweight, with a textured woven fabric that drapes away from the body. We gave them a wide waistband for added comfort, and an operational drawstring for custom fit.

They come in this soft blue and washed black.

Fit Tip: We’re both wearing XS, but you can see we need a shorter length.

Anna Maria Twist Sleeve Tee | Siesta Tee | Hanalei Jogger Pant

And here they are in an XS petite…perfectly cropped!! So stinking cute, right?! I’m mildly obsessed! I’ll wear them with sneakers and sandals, and even add a jean jacket for a perfect travel style.

And the black in the cropped fit! #love These are straight from the package, so they’re a little rumpled.

I’m just wondering how much you actually slept this week! It’s like being the bride at a wedding that just keeps going. I’m looking hard at the elbow length striped top. So many of your styles showcase the upper arm; not a good spot on me (surgical scars and swelling). Even if I don’t get to buy any of the pieces, I’m still enjoying the weeklong fashion show and styling tips.

Congrats on the collection! I love all the looks!
I would suggest for next collection (!) you had a friend or someone over a size 6 who could be photographed in these looks with you. Can you suggest a blog that does this on this collection? All the blogs I find ( and Nordstrom) only have petite looks. The dressing room looks are very helpful with scale on length but not so much on fit with bust/hips.

I agree! Most of the bloggers that I have seen show this collection are all size XS. I’m 5’9 and 145 (usually size Med) so would like to see some ladies that are a little larger–er less petite! 🙂 Love the collection though Cassie! Just would like to see if on more body types!

And really, really cute! And, come on! A Sugarplum pink cord and pin to hold the tag??? Adorable!! Talk about attention to detail! Great job, Cassie! Cute collection! Would love to see some V-neck tees that have a small/narrow v-neck. Seems ALL the stores have wide v-necks. My mom especially love to wear a tee that didn’t show her whole neckline. Looking forward to seeing upcoming collections!

I must admit, I’ve never been a blog follower, as most seem to be self-egrandizing blurbs of uselessness. When I read the article about your line on CultureMap I just had to take a peek, believing I’d find nothing but overdone cold shoulder tops and pirate sleeves. I STAND CORRECTED!! Not only are the clothes adorable and wearable, the fit advice you give is beyond fabulous! Your willingness to share real, human, non-filtered pics in the dressing room is wonderfully mind-boggling. There may be days when blogging is the very last thing you want to do, but know this: you have a gift, and have turned at least one anti-blogger into a believer.
