There may have been an official reveal on Babygirl’s Room, but that doesn’t mean it was done. No room is really ever complete in my house…because what fun would that be?! My idea of a fun Saturday morning is moving rugs from room-to-room, and playing musical lamps and furniture. Although, it’s safe to say the yellow highboy will never live anywhere but in my daughter’s room. As long as it’s yellow anyway.
See that random basket stuck under the cheery highboy? We were having a problem with shoes scattered all over the floor, so I dug this basket out of the garage to help corral them. So the shoes were no longer a problem, but that eyesore of a basket was.
Since it’s a kid’s room, I decided to try out a herringbone pattern for fun. First tape vertical stripes around the basket.
Then connect them with small strips of tape, placed diagonally. If this were a wall or piece of furniture, I’d measure it out and be more exact. But this is a basket. For stinky kid shoes. No measuring necessary.
I’ve been itching to try this new line of spray paint from Michaels, so I snatched up a can with a coupon. It’s a low-odor, water-based paint, so best used for art and indoor projects.
Just look at that yummy selection of colors!
It doesn’t have the same smell as oil-based spraypaint, but I still sprayed it outside on a drop cloth. It has a very fine mist and sprays on evenly, and the color is so vibrant! After a few layers of paint, and a few days to air out, I brought the little basket back inside.
It matches the pink-radish of her bed perfectly. And is now a cute little accent in the room, as opposed to a plain, random basket.
The herringbone is cute, but it didn’t work any magic on putting shoes away. They still end up scattered all over. Are you constantly tripping over shoes in your house? And don’t you want to come hang out with me, since my idea if fun is rearranging accessories and taping off paint patterns?!
oh man, i really like this project. I've had my eye on a diy like this for some baskets in my house for a while. Would you use this type of paint again? It looks pricier than the regular krylon.
Absolutely darling!!
Been a longtime fan of that highboy and I've had some of those baskets forever so cute what you did! I'm also glad to know I'm not the only one who does lamp swaps!!!!
Everytime you show a pic of that yellow dresser I melt. It is so stinkin' cute!
This is just in the nick of time- we have four or five baskets waiting to be painted for our nursery. I'm jealous your Michaels has all that spray paint- ours has nothing of the sort!
That's my idea of fun too! Love how this turned out!
i love this. i have that same basket and it is so boring! ha! i think i'll try this…and that spray paint! haven't been in Michael's for awhile.
Ah man, I was hoping you were going to say it was the perfect sol'n! I have stinky socks that hang out with our stinky shoes. Oh well, your basket is cute nonetheless.
Wow, this came out great!
I am constantly tripping over Chris's shoes! That boys leaves them everywhere! Basket, too cute!
Love this idea! I have a few baskets around our house that could use some dressing up. Thanks for sharing!
~Abby =)
Fantastic color! Good to know about the paint, I haven't used that one before.
You are truly creative Cassie! I love your projects are easy yet so pretty and not tacky!! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks guys!!
Julia — I would use the paint again, if I needed a very specific color that only they offered.
Katie — Look for this paint in the artist section, not the regular craft or spraypaint aisle!
Hope it helps!
Well, aren't you a smarty pants! I never would have thought to do that, it turned out great!
I'm always tripping over shoes, but they're usually mine! 😐
p.s. I stinking love that high boy.
That yellow high boy is absolutely to die for. Yes, I've seen it before….but I "ooh" and "ah" every single time. And the basket turned out great! It looks much more at home now! 🙂
I thought her room was perfection but leave it to you and a can of spray paint ~ so fun!
This came out so cute! I love the way the red pops with the yellow dresser.
I think that is the prettiest dresser I have ever seen! I want one!!!!
Love the basket. My husband's shoes are always all over the place! Drives me nuts. How hard is it to just put them away?!
What a cute room. I love that liquitex spray paint, the colors are sublime and so saturated! Good luck with the shoes!

So cute! If only I could figure out to spray paint! It ends up a nasty disaster every time so I quit trying! Love love love that yellow dresser!
Pretty, pretty, pretty!! That basket is seriously gorgeous. We have SUCH a problem with shoes all over our house, too… and it's just me and the husband, haha. I need to make a pretty basket like that. Even if the shoes don't get put away, at least I'll have something pretty to look at 🙂
You did such a great job on the basket and i think it looks fab in the little gap under the (amazing!) yellow tallboy! Hope you are well, sweet Cassie! x
I'm loving the yellow! (And the basket is adorable, too.) Great contrast with the two colors.
