Hi Sugarplum!

{Kitchen} The Reveal!

August 11, 2015

If you’ve ever remodeled a room…specifically a bathroom or kitchen…then you know just how stressful it can be. Granted, it’s completely exciting to be able to create a space exactly to your liking (or as ‘exactly’ as the budget allows), but there are just so many decisions…the kind of expensive decisions that are reallllllly hard to undo.

For those reasons, I usually tend to second guess every choice that accompanies a remodel…and this Kitchen was no different. But all these months later, I’m thrilled with every hand-wringing, self-doubt inducing, reach-further-in-the-bank-account decision we made, and I pinch myself every time I walk in this room. I can’t believe this is my house, and I get to boil water in this Kitchen! (Just kidding, I use the toaster, too.) 😉

Hi Sugarplum | Kitchen Remodel

I know it’s been a long wait, but truthfully, I kept procrastinating the full reveal for fear the room wasn’t perfect yet, or I wouldn’t do it justice. You guys stuck with me through every painstaking step of the reno, and I wanted it to be worth all the anticipation.

But I finally realized the room will never be perfect, or even complete, nor will everyone like it…but we love it. Like, really, really love every last detail of it! This post is pretty photo-heavy (hence the truncated post…sorry for that!), so I’ll let the pictures do the talking, then follow up with a Before & After post outlining all the details, changes, and updates.

This room truly is the heart of our home…where we gather every morning and night, and usually all the hours in between. The space works and flows so much more efficiently now, too, and I’m actually excited by the prospect of cooking. #gofigure

We’re still working on a few design and organizational details, so I’ll be back to discuss those, along with the full breakdown. Oh! And be sure you’re following me on InstaGram or Facebook…I finally get to reveal the big secret later today!

Thanks girlie! Our counters are corian…which took some getting used to after having granite for so many years. I can't put super hot or cold items directly on it…but the upside is I get a solid white surface with no pattern (what I wanted to balance the backsplash) xoxo

Love everything!! Did y'all add the cabinets and the refrigerator at the same time? Or were your cabinets just the perfect height for a bev. fridge? I really want one, and I even have an opening for one (90's kitchen desk area opening), but I haven't found one that will fit. So, now I'm thinking of adding new cabinets to that section of my kitchen and was wondering your cabinet source. [Sorry for the long/ potentially confusing comment]. Thanks!

    • hisugarplum says: September 23, 2015 at 11:00 pm

Thanks Barbara! We search far and wide for a beverage fridge that fit the dimensions…and got lucky with this one (linked in the source list!). It's exactly the same width and height as one cabinet bay (probably not coincidence) So they cut out the cabinet and drawer above, and just slid the fridge in! Well, they had to install an outlet to power it, too 🙂

    QUESTION,!
Love what you did & i am planning to do the same in my kitchen.
I am assuming you layed your wood floors up to the cabinets & just under appliances. So, my big question is, how did your dishwasher fit under the counter top & what did you have to do to get it to fit???
My husband is insisting we have to take out all the cabinets & lay floors under everything? Please help, this big issue has held up our doing it for years!

    Reply
    • hisugarplum says: September 23, 2015 at 8:44 pm

The floors only raised the dishwasher about half an inch, so not enough to make fitting an issue. The floors are all the way under the dishwasher and fridge.

I'm in LOVE with your kitchen! I can't even pick a favorite part! The lanterns, the rug, the backsplash…everything is AMAZING!

I did have a question…how much of the wood grain shows through the paint on your cabinets? Do you feel like it's something you notice? We're getting ready to paint our cabinets and that's something I've been curious about. Thanks in advance!

    Reply
    • hisugarplum says: August 26, 2015 at 12:49 pm

Thanks so much, Kristen! That's a great question…on the existing cabinets that had a layer of varnish, you can barely see the grain. On the new cabinets we had built, the grain def shows through more (even after priming). It was something I thought would be an issue, but honestly, I don't even notice it. And also, I don't mind that you know they are wood…adds a bit of texture and and depth. Hope this helps!! xo

This is a small thing, but I'm loving that little white tin with the orange pattern. Is it a tea cannister? I can only make out the word "grapefruit." I'm guessing that there's a strong chance that this was a random find at Home Goods, but just in case this is a favorite, I thought I'd check. Between the cute tin and a tea in one of my favorite flavors, I'm intrigued!

Thanks so much, Jenna! I can't believe I forgot to include that…and you're the first to ask! The walls are SW 'Repose Gray'…just one up from the cabinet color on the swatch. Hope this helps!! xo

Do you remember the name of your persian rug? I've been on the site but I can't find yours?

I wish I could link you to the exact one, but they are one of a kind. Perhaps email them and ask what they suggest that's closet to mine? I hope that helps!
