{Big Box Bathroom} Days 5 & 6

Happy, happy Monday! I’m a little more excited about this Monday than usual…I think it’s because this is our last full week of the year! I am ready for some days off, and time spent at home just staring at the Christmas tree. How about we take a break from all the tinsel and catch up on our Big Box Bathroom remodel?! I know I’ve kind of kept you hanging…so today I’m hitting you with a double whammy….both Days 5 and 6!
When we left off (see Day 4 here), my rock-star contractor had pretty much finished up the big stuff…shower and floor tile grouted, vanity, sink and faucet installed, new scones wired, and all new trim and wall paneling hung. With all the electrical and plumbing involved, there was no way we were going to tackle most of that!

But I had no problem stepping in for the final leg (we did all the work we could in order to save on the budget), and we knocked the rest of it out in a weekend. The kids couldn’t wait to use the room again, so we added a quick shower curtain from Target, and an Ikea bathmat. I’m still undecided on whether or not to paint the window trim…it will likely be the last decision, once everything is in place.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
The wall was patched where the original light fixture had been, then we sanded it smooth and painted. The color is a really warm charcoal, but it comes across black in these pictures for some reason. #amateurphotographer You’ll see in a minute why we chose this color. The mirror is just propped-up for now…I couldn’t wait to see how it’d all look together. The rest of the walls and ceiling got another coat of paint, as well.
Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
We used tiny finishing nails to hang the wall boards, but still needed to spackle and sand the holes. Then the boards, along with all the trim, got a few coats of paint. We used a 1-inch piece of wood to give the wall panels a finished edge, and painted it the same white.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
The old baseboards didn’t really jive with the new look, and it was easier to pull them off so the paneling could go all the way to the floor. Instead of actual molding, we used simple 1x3s as baseboards and trim around the door and window. They were installed after the panels and tile, so the floor extends under them.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
We went with a narrow profile toilet to make room for the additional 14-inches of vanity….it’s ridiculous how happy the new potty makes us. I’m willing to bet this is the only picture of a potty you’ll see in blogland today.
Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5

I’ll source everything in the final post, but can you even believe these sconces are only $40?! #lowesforthewin

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
Once we had the walls and trim painted, it became pretty clear our old white door wasn’t actually white…so we’ll be painting that next!
Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
The vanity is amazing, and I love how it sits on feet, making it feel like a piece of furniture. We decided to forgo the included hardware for something softer and more unique….I’m thinking it will probably be these.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
Okay, you may recall the moodboard included wallpaper…so my final task for Day 5 was to prep the walls with Shieldz. It’s a clear, latex-based solution that gives the paper something to grab.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 6

Each day of this remodel was dramatic, but Day 6 really transformed the room, and was the one I was most looking forward to….can you blame me?! #swoon

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 6

I’ve loved this Hygge & West ‘Daydream’ paper for awhile, but had never seen this color way used…I think it’s just perfect for the kid’s shared space, equal parts masculine and feminine. We painted the ceiling charcoal for a seamless transition between it and the paper.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 6
Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 6

I was concerned about hanging wallpaper in a teenager’s bathroom (hello, 20 minute shower), but our stellar installer said between the Shieldz, the jumbo fan we installed, and the prime level of adhesive he used, there’d be no problems.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 6

The cloud shapes in this paper are pure white, so we went with the same color for the rest of the room. Except the door, it’s still the color of pee.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 6
The wallpaper added the warmth and personality the room was lacking with all that white, and I could not be happier! Now I just need to add the finishing touches and accessories, and it’s final reveal time! What do you think so far?? And what about the window now that you’ve seen the paper…think I should paint it white, or leave it raw and seal it?

{Follow along from the beginning}
***For those of you in the DFW area asking about my rockstar-contractor, I don’t trust anyone but Classic Kitchens & Baths (214-349-5999)!

And I used Jason Hixson at Wallart Wallcoverings to install the wallpaper, and I would most definitely use them again! (972-365-5181)***

  8. Completely fabulous! A perfect mix. I am contemplating wallpaper my master bathroom and the upstairs bathroom so I am happy to have a nice source. Now, if I could just get the name of your hairdresser because the first two I have visited have completely gotten F's! đŸ™‚

  9. Oh my goodness! That paper is stunning!! I was thinking "man that charcoal paint is making the room feel so dark" and then you showed me the wall paper and now I am in love. Pay no attention to the thirty year old woman living in your bathtub, because I'm moving in!

  10. Oh my goodness, I am dying over that wallpaper! Dying! I will most definitely be calling your contractors when I'm ready to bit the bullet on my daughters' bathroom remodel. The whole thing is basically the color of pee right now. It's sad. Your remodel gives me hope though- thank you!

  12. Looking fabulous Cassie – love the wallpaper! Seeing it all come together, I'd probably paint the window trim white.

Just a word on the Anthropologie knobs… I've used a few (on our linen closet; on Chloe's costume closet) and for some reason, they've always been troublesome. You can never quite get them tight enough, either the backplate spins, or we've had a couple of the ceramic ones break under the pressure of tightening. It is a pretty knob though.

I have been dying to see the finished product, it did not disappoint! The wallpaper is PERFECT!!!
As for the window trim, I think it needs paint. From the pictures anyway it just looks like you did not finish; all your other surfaces are painted. It just doesn't seem to tie into anything else leaving it natural. As for the color I would go with a green matched to the bird in the paper. I would also paint the door the same. If not green then, I would paint both the charcoal.
