hi Sugarplum!

A Day at the Fair!

October 24, 2018

You’ve heard the phrase, ‘Everything’s bigger in Texas!’, right? It’s generally a little tongue-in-cheek, unless you’re talking about the fair. Because when it comes to the State Fair of Texas…everything really is bigger and better. And fried!

The State Fair has been a family tradition as long as I can remember. My grandfather took me every year from childhood until I went to college…and even then, I often came home just for my Fair fix.

I remember the first year after Mr. SP and I moved to Nashville, and the Tennessee State Fair rolled around, I was so excited!! That’s when I realized that not all fairs are alike. No offense Tennessee, but your state fair is more like a parking lot carnival compared to the State Fair of Texas. 😉

So obviously the Fair is now part of my own family’s annual tradition, and a day I look forward to all year. Except this year, Mr. SP and I cheated a little bit…and went by ourselves! Don’t worry, the kids got their day, too, but it was so fun to walk along the midway at our own pace and have a little fun of just our own.

The funny thing about the Fair and Texas…one year you’ll be in a tank top and flip-flops, and the next in fleece and hats. This was definitely a fleece and hat year, so we bundled up in our cozy and comfy favorites from Backcountry.

Vests are such a versatile piece for our kookie weather…they provide a little extra warmth when worn over a long-sleeve tee, but they’re also perfect for layering under a jacket for more protection, but not too much bulk. I’m a sucker for the super-soft fleece of both North Face and Patagonia vests.

This canvas backpack makes a great day pack! It holds just the essentials and is super lightweight. I chose a gender-neutral color so any of us could carry it, but it comes in tons of fun colors.

Fit Tip: Size up one in these vests, I’m wearing a small.

Mr. Sugarplum has a bit of a hoodie-obsession this time of year, and wears them more often than not. This one has a good, sturdy shape, and is extra thick and warm. He also likes how the hood stands a little taller in the back.

He recently picked up these shoes for all-terrain hikes and walks…but found they’re also great for golf! They’re waterproof, too, so that’s been helpful in this crazy weather lately.

With all our rain lately, I opted for my rainboots in case there were still a lot of puddles and muddy patches. I love that I can trudge through anything, and just rinse them off at the end of the day!

The green and plaid scarf is perfect for Fall, and goes with both sweaters and activewear.

Sugarplum Style Tip: Don’t overlook the Men’s department when looking for accessories like scarves and hats! Sometimes they have the best patterns!

We had the best time laughing and playing! Of course we love doing things as a family, but it’s so important for our marriage to have fun on our own sometimes. Is the state fair a big deal in your area? What is your favorite fair memory? Better yet, what’s your favorite fair food?!

I love that shot of the giant ferris wheel!! Everything really is bigger in Texas. My fair favorites are corn dogs and elephant ears. I haven’t been to the NC state fair in years, but it looks like I should give it a go again. Super cute pictures. You guys are the sweetest couple.

Yep I came home just last week to go to the TX fair. The one here in Tulsa is just like you said a carnival in a parking lot! I went on Thursday and we were so lucky because it didn’t rain that day. I got my corny dog too and Jack’s fries. Yummy!

I would appreciate it if you could clearly identify the posts that are sponsored right from the beginning. I find that they are hard to find and not explicit about the fact of whether or not you get compensated to write these posts.

Hi Laura! I always disclose sponsored posts, and follow FTC guidelines in where and how I do it. I work hard on all my posts, and the content, voice, and opinion aren’t altered or swayed by it being sponsored or not. Its the same post I’d write regardless of sponsorship. Plus, I only accept sponsored content that is completely authentic to me, so it’s always a natural fit! In the instance of today’s post, I’ve been shopping Backcountry for years, and this is exactly what I’d wear on a cold, rainy day to the fair! xo. C

Sorry – commented yesterday with no reply. Discount doesn’t work at Backcountry – can you help out? Thanks.

Oh – and it’s just the backpack I looking for that’s highlighted in your post. Your coupon reads that it’s good sitewide but I’m having trouble getting it to work on the backpack. Checked with customer service yesterday and they told me to check back today – same problem. Help!

Sorry for the delay, Stacy! I was reaching out to Backcountry before I responded! The code is only good for your first purchase, so if you’ve ordered before (under that email address), the code won’t work. Also, if an item is already marked down 15% or more, the code doesn’t apply. I hope that answers the question…if neither of these options applies to you, and the code still doesn’t work (you enter it at the checkout stage), please let me know so I can get direct help!! xo. C

They’re tied to your email address…so you could always use the code under another one…

Nothing is bigger than the Minnesota State fair! It’s truly the best! 322 acres of fun. Total attendance this year for 12 days was 2,046,533. My family goes at least 4 days. Never enough! Best thing is the craft beer- mini donut beer is my favorite! So much free music as well!!
