I have a bone to pick with whoever said the nurse doesn’t get sick! Babygirl was down and out last week, and her precious and darling mother (me) took her to the doctor (twice!), nursed her fevers, and fed her a constant rotation of popsicles. And sure enough, as soon as she’s feeling better, I’m about ready to crawl in a ditch. Whatever crud she had has taken root in me, so it’s been a rocky week. Which is probably what set me off when I walked in on this scene for the 48th time since school started (48 days ago).
Whatever tolerance I had, for backpacks and jackets thrown willy-nilly around the house, is gone!
To be fair, I’m not much better….my bags aren’t on the floor, but they are everywhere.
Clearly this family needs some sort of mudroom or landing spot. The Command Center we created earlier this year has been so helpful, so I have high hopes that this new spot will be just as effective for us. It didn’t take long to round up some great inspiration in a Pinterest board. These are some of my favorites, all containing elements I hope to duplicate.
Man, that’s good stuff! Doesn’t that just make your OCD heart skip a beat?! I know I’ve got drapes to sew(and I actually started them…or one side of one panel anyway), but for the safety of my sanity, creating a Mudroom area has just become priority #1! It is my birthday weekend afterall, which means what I say goes, right?
Do you have some sort of landing spot? What elements are necessary for making it totally efficient and effective? Do backpacks on the floor make you lose your freaking mind?!
This is precisely why I had to bust through a wall to make our coat closet a mudroom. I can't wait to see what you come up with. And so sorry you are feeling yucky. Here's hoping it passes super quickly so you can rage against the machine for your birthday!

Hope you're feeling better soon, Cassie! Nothing like a backback on the floor to throw you right over the cliff. We HAVE a mudroom, and yet my darlings STILL leave the backpack, shoes and trail of their presence all over. But someday my house will spotless and I'll be all sorts of lonely. Totally loving your inspiration pics; hope you use your bday to get that project going!!
Ugh – i've been feeling yucky too! And preach it girl – good heavens does the floor really look like a good place to leave those things?! I had started on a mudroom project but it came to hault – I really need to get on that!
Yessssssssssssssss!! Backpacks on the floor also make me lose my mind 🙂 We have a set routine for when we come home from school, bags and lunchboxes get emptied etc. This happens every day when I bring the kids home. As soon as it is not me bringing the kids home – backpacks on the floor again!!!!
This nurse always gets sick! I made a makeshift mudroom for us by putting a bench with cubbies for shoes just inside the door and mounting hooks above it.
Try not judge my photos…it's before I knew anything about my camera other than "Auto" and "No Flash"…but you can get the gist.
My son's dumping spot was immediately inside the front door – just dump everything – never quite convinced him to hold on until he got to his room. Hope you're feeling better soon.
I'm a sucker for a good mudroom. My mother-in-law has one, as well as what one would call a formal entry, I suppose, so she's got plenty of "drop" areas that help for our large family. Gotta love the organization!

Where are the piles of paper? As you can see I definitely have need of a mudroom. I'm drooling over some of those pictures and can't wait to see what you come up with.
Even though I have only 2 kids they have 6 backpacks between them – for school, for religious school, for swim lessons, for sports teams….then there is my music bag, my briefcase, hubby's laptop and hubby's briefcase! All gets dumped in a large ugly pile in the kitchen and is the first thing you see when you walk in….ICK
Since my house is a raised ranch with a split staircase at the front door we have no room for a real mudroom area by the front door. So I've been toying with the idea of adding "built ins" to the back wall of the garage as a dumping place for all of those bags and shoes, and the dog's leash. Can't take credit for the idea. I stole it from themoney-pit.com where Kim built a stunning unit out of IKEA cabinets on a budget that even I can afford.
Now to just clean out the garage and get to work adding a mudroom.

First of all HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Second, I have about 3 x 3 feet of front entry and boys galore in my house that make me trip over everything every durn day that I come home. I get it. Thanks for the inspiration but I'd need about 20 litres of persperation and a new house to fit in a mudroom. I am working on my vaulting skills instead 🙂
Don't I know it!! I feel your pain. I've got 4 kids and without a mudroom, their stuff gets dumped all over the place–shoes, backpacks, dirty socks, jackets. It drives me NUTS! We're currently looking to remodel or buy a different house and I have the mudroom as a "must-have". My husband thought that was a little bit much to have that down as a requirement. I've been reading your blog for about a year now and I can't believe I haven't commented earlier. I guess I always think I'll do it "later". I love your blog and it's a highlight!

Hi Cassie! I would love a mudroom too!
