How has it already been a year since I threw this Pancakes & Pajamas shindig for my daughter!? Where has the time gone?
Sadly another year has passed, and my little Babygirl is soon to be six. *sob* I’m working through the depression by planning this year’s birthday celebration….an
She loves to draw, color and paint, so we thought it would be the perfect creative party for her. My talented sponsor, Carli at DimplePrints, created the adorable invites, which I mailed in bright yellow envelopes.
The party is this Saturday, so we’ve been busy getting things ready….starting with adding some bright iron-on patches to plain cotton aprons. For $2 each at Michaels, it’s pretty cheap protection for the artist’s clothes!
For placemats, Mr. Sugarplum made me a Pac Man paint palette template, which I used to cut thin pieces of foam. Waka waka. Circles of felt are glued on to represent the paint.
I tend to go hogwild overboard with events like this, but this year I’m trying to scale it back. There will be fewer guests, and I’m making it easier on myself by using DimplePrints printable package for more of the decor. The scissors and I are now besties.
Since we’re using all the colors of the rainbow, finding coordinating items has been easy! The goodie bags are made up of colored pencils, a drawing pad and bright water bottle (all from Michaels). The oversized tote ($1 at Old Navy) is perfect for taking home their creations and holding pinata candy (there’s always a pinata!).
Here’s some of the inspiration I’m drawing from…..Pinterest is like fuel to my fire, and not helping with this whole ‘scale it back’ plan!

I’d love to make these mini-cakes, but someone’s special day isn’t the time for me to be botching attempting the most important menu item!

But I am going to give this rainbow cake a whirl!

Any rainbow/art part tips and ideas you want to pass my way? How about the secret to making one of those cakes?! I hope Babygirl is as excited about this party as her mother!
Hi Cassie, can't wait to see what you come up with! Be sure to send it our way to share!

What a fun party~ Cant wait to see how everything comes together.
I cannot wait to have kids & start planning birthday parties after this post! Very fun & am loving the theme.
I'm doing the pancakes and PJs party for my daughter's 6th birthday in a couple of weeks, and I LOVE the art party theme too!! I tend to go a little crazy too and reading your blog encourages me maybe a little too much!
I can't wait to see pictures from her party! I know you will do a great job!
What a great idea!! Can't wait to plan amazing parties like yours 🙂
So sad I'm missing this. Give baby girl a huge hug & kiss for me & I will see you all soon:( Miss you bunches!
This is such a cute idea – I can't wait to see pictures!!
Oh I LOVE the idea of an art party!! Right up my alley!! So fun!
it looks adorable! i can't wait to see the party pics!
I love those cakes! I just tried one for fun with my kid but the frosting broke up the layers too much! I think next time I'll freeze the layers before assembling. Wish I had read that piece of advice before I tried it:)

Have you seen the mini easles and canvases out there? They would be perfect for decor or for favors! I can't wait to see your cake.
I've made a rainbow cake before, and to get the colors that bright, you need to use gel food coloring like Wilton or Americolor and mix it into white cake batter. You can find them at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc. Love all of your ideas!!!
This looks absolutely amazing…I would've been *over the moon* to go to a party like this as a wee one, let alone have it be *MY* birthday bash! Just one problem…I'm pretty sure my invitation got lost in the mail. Don't sweat it, I'll just come anyways (c: hehehe! I really need to try some of that rainbow cake!
Oh my gosh. LOVE all of the wonderful bright colors.
I love this! You are so creative, and I'm sure it's going to turn out great. 🙂
All of this color is making me so happy! Love the aprons too 🙂
Awe, we made our first rainbow cake for the first day of school. So fun. I am with you. . .trying to scale back with less guests and ordering prints as well. Makes it even more fun. Darling idea with the art party. R would LOVE it.
PS. . our little cake boss party is only an hour and a half as well! I knew I liked you 😉
I just made a rainbow cake this past weekend for my DD's 7th Rainbows & Unicorns birthday party! It turned out great.
I used 2 white cake mixes and divided each one into 3, for a total of 6 layers. I bought a box of Wilton gel food colors from JoAnn's for around $9 and used just about 1/8-1/4 tsp of coloring in each layer, and the colors were BRIGHT! I do think it would have been fun to add some flavoring to the cake–almond extract, maybe?–just to give it a bit more flavor since white cake is kind of boring. I made 4 batches of white buttercream frosting and it took every single spoonful to frost the layers & cake.
IMO, a cake like this is more about appearance than total yumminess. If you want total yumminess, you go with a chocolate cake & chocolate frosting! LOL But it was pretty darn impressive and all the little girls oohed and aahed when I cut open the white cake to expose all of the colors!
Oh my goodness… pinterest is most definitely not the place to go to find ways to scale it back… ha! but I love all the inspiration.. it looks like your little girl's party will be a blast!
Freakin' adorable 🙂 can't wait to see it! She and all her friends will LOVE it!!
What an awesome idea for a party! I can't wait until my daughter is older and can truly appreciate parties! She'll be 2 this year. Hopefully next year!
I love this idea. It would be fun to do this for my niece when she's older. Between me and her own mother, we're going to make her an artsy/craftsy kid. LOL Love the ideas you have. pinterest really does not help scale things back, believe me.

This is going to be a super fun party! The girls are gonna love wearing their adorable aprons:) I'm definitely going to keep this in mind for the future!
Sloan???
Cute name! LOVE it!
Enjoy the party/party planning!
SO fun! Love this idea! You're such the mom hostess with the mostess. My boy turns 8 in May and I've got nothing. Need to start thinking probably.
Hi! I love your party ideas! I recently posted some rainbow food photos at:
http://www.thenorthendloft.com/2012/03/friday-finds_23.html
I also fell in love with that beautiful rainbow cake. If you follow the link beneath the rainbow cake photo in my post, you'll find not only the recipe by the amazing Whisk Kid (Kaitlin Flannery), but also a video of her baking it on the Martha Stewart Show.
I hope you'll share a photo of your cake with all of us. Have a great party!
I adore this idea! Love all the rainbow colors. I did a painting station at Sterlings birthday and it was a hit minus his cute birthday outfit he ruined with hot pink paint. But what did I expect letting a 2 year old paint?
What a fabulous idea! Looks like it will be a great party! Can't wait to see pics of all the fun!
Sounds like a fantastic party! Our little girl just turned six too…I made her cake this time, my first one….well second, I did a test run. Can't wait to see pictures. Have fun!
I made a rainbow cake for my daughter's last birthday, and it was very simple. See it with some words of advice here: http://mamabhive.blogspot.ca/2012/01/crafty-lady-i-have-been-determined-this.html
Good Luck!
Stacey
