{Mudroom} Almost There

Between episodes of shoveling back large quantities of food over the Thanksgiving weekend…we did manage to make some progress on the Mudroom. Many of our rooms are in the middle of a makeover, but with school in full swing, and Winter just around the corner, finishing this space is essential for my sanity our family. I refuse to let gloves and coats be my nemesis this year!

Phase One was installing the faux-board-and-batten treatment…to help disguise the SIX doors in our back hallway.

mudroom progress

This past weekend we completed the aesthetic portion of the project….paint and replacing the boob ceiling light. Here’s the new paint job, using Behr Ashes. This hall leads to the Family Room, which is painted the same color, and we had leftover paint, so it was a pretty easy decision. I painted the walls above the board treatment, and the ceiling.

Mudroom

And what post, that involves hanging something, would be complete without a picture of Mr. Sugarplum in a strange outfit (here and here)? My sweet hubs, just home from soccer, hanging the new light.

Mudroom

I wouldn’t say he’s electrically astute, but he had no problem hanging the Ikea Knappa pendant, using a recessed lighting converter kit from the hardware store.

Mudroom

Is it the perfect dose of personality for this little space, or what?!

Mudroom

So now that the hall is looking better, it’s time to make it functional….first up….hooks.

Mudroom

Large ones on the top row for heavy bags and backpacks, and smaller double hooks below for lighter jackets and scarves (and easily reached by little people). Both are from Lowes.

We added a little row of small hooks on the opposite wall for keys (they come in natural wood, but we painted it the trim color).

Mudroom

For now, we’re not adding larger hooks to this side of the hall since they’d likely obstruct the walkway. You know men and their need for a wide berth! Or is that just my man? “I need to be able to walk through here without bumping into things!”

Mudroom

Here’s the view when entering from the garage…LOVE!!!

Mudroom

All that’s left is a rug, and putting this space to use! And maybe a splash of color, because neutral and I don’t dance for long. What’s your routine for dumping hats, gloves and coats this time of year?

***Update: See the final Mudroom here!***

  6. Love, love. love that light in the hallway. How tall are your ceilings? I'm afraid mine are too low to hang a pendant light in the hall.

  8. What is it with men and the need for space. It's like my husbands triples in size when he needs to be able to walk through. Ridiculous. Drives me crazy. Glad to know I'm not alone. Loving your mudroom thus far. Thanks for sharing, liz

Hi! I love the light too! I have a question about it though…it looks bright…does it put out a lot of light? I have a beautiful light in my laundry room. The walk area (minus the washer/dryer) looks to be about the same size as yours, but my light doesn't put out enough light. Maybe I could switch it with the Ikea one…Thanks!

  19. Hi Anya L — I'm able to reply to your comment via email, so hopefully you check back here! This fixture puts out plenty of light, but it's likely because of the bulb we're using. Maybe try switching your bulb to a higher wattage? Hope that helps!

  23. That is a fantastic looking space if I do say so myself. What a wonderful way to use it too! Loving that gray…I wish I would've used it for my new home…the gray I went with has a blue undertone and that's all I see!! My husband is tired of listening about it..so I'll vent on here. haha

  25. Cute! I'm loving the light fixture, things look great! I need to come up with something for our front entrance because our coat closet is on the other side of the living room, across our cream carpet. No bueno.

  33. What an awesome idea! I've always wanted a mudroom but didn't think we had the room for one. We use a foyer closet now as the dumping grounds for backpacks, hat, coats, shoes, you name it. Hmm, I think I have a new project for hubby.

P.S. Your hubs is rocking that outfit!
