Master Closet | Makeover Reveal

Happy Christmas, friends! Or what feels like Christmas anyway, because I can hardly believe the space I’m sharing today! In fact, I have no words. No clever anecdotes, not an ounce of sarcasm, and not a single hashtag. This glorious closet has left me speechless! #dontgetusedtoit #oopsIhashtagged

Because not only is our Master Closet now more glorious than my wildest dreams, but I had the privilege of overhauling it from top to bottom with one of  my favorite stores, The Container Store. Seriously, angels sing every time I walk in.

White elfa Decor System | Gray Sweater | Wedge Booties | Leopard Carpet | Shag Stool

Similar Striped Top | Floral Skirt | Red Bag | Clear Shoe Boxes

Right?! I have heart palpitations every time I walk in. But before you can truly appreciate the magic The Container Store, and my Contained Home Organizer, created, let me remind you of where we started…the tragic befores. Okay, maybe that’s a tad dramatic, but I’m prone to it. (See all the Befores here.)

Boot Rack

Even though we had a fair number of built-ins, they weren’t conducive to our things…or my height. And without dressers in the bedroom, we were forced to squeeze everything in the closet. Which meant lots of bins and disheveled stacks of clothes. I had some semblance of order with the hanging clothes (although the rods weren’t sturdy enough to hold them), but shoes, jeans, tees, activewear and accessories were near impossible to keep orderly, and reach (the ceilings are 12-feet!).

It wasn’t the worst set-up ever, and we were certainly making it work…but were we fully utilizing the space? No ma’am. Was it a bit of an eyesore considering how visible the room is to both our bedroom and bathroom? Oh yeah. Did it improve? Absolutely! In fact, thanks to the elfa Shelving and Drawer System, and our Contained Home Organizer, Alison, it’s hardly even recognizable as the same space!

Striped Totes | Pink Sweater | Tassel Necklace

We started by installing an entire bank of elfa Translucent Drawers to house all our folded items like tees, jeans, shorts, activewear, and undergarments. Shoes now have a prominent spot on ventilated shelves and elfa Gliding Shoe Racks, and handbags stand tall thanks to quilted purse shapers.

The elfa System alone would be jaw-dropping, but we took it to another level by adding glamorous new Crystorama chandeliers and Karastan leopard carpet. After all, the closet is the first place I go in the morning, and usually the last before bed…not to mention, hours of scheming and creating in between!

Divided compartments for the drawers, acrylic jewelry stands, and elfa bracket hooks mean all my accessories stay well-organized, and within easy reach.

Leopard Carpet | Shag Stool | Pink Earrings

Acrylic Jewelry Stands | Agate Cuff | Leopard Cuff

Leopard Carpet | Chandeliers | Shag Stool | Striped Shirt | Poncho

We took advantage of the 12-foot ceilings with a triple row of hanging rods, conveniently accessed with a step-ladder or garment hook. And more ventilated shelves, custom fit to our space, contain hats, scarves, and boots.

Garment Hook | Huggable Hangers | Gray Sweater | Hoop Earrings

Favorite Cozy Cardigan (worn as a robe, too) | Rainboots

Gray Booties | Cognac Booties | Wedge Booties | Gray Chukkas | Taupe Booties | Taupe Cutout Booties

All-Star Sneakers | Nikes | Loafers | Similar Nude Heels | Similar Taupe Booties | Black Booties | Patent Pumps | Floral Rainboots | Black Rainboots

The entire closet is peppered with elfa bracket hooks and valet rods, creating areas for robes, sweatshirts, and jewelry, along with places to hang outfit ideas. (I’m looking at you, 5 Ways series!) Displaying favorite pieces on decor items like trays and busts, along with adding art and a classic roman shade from The Shade Store, help the closet to feel more like a beautiful room.

Woman Bust Head | Similar Hat | Statement Necklace | Wishbone Ring Dish | Pink Hoop Earrings

Pearl Cluster Necklace | Tassel Necklace | Pom Pom Clutch | Pink Handbag

Art Print | Roman Shade | Bag Tassel

Similar Knee Boots | Koolaburra by UGG Boots

Of course we didn’t forget about Mr. SP! His clothes were all transferred to the miraculous Joy Mangano huggable hangers, along with new shelves for his hats, accessories and shoes. The woven basket (found at HomeGoods) is adorned with my beloved tassel charm, and dirty laundry is suddenly chic! The tall shelves on his side are perfect for stashing seldom-used bags and travel accessories, and the additional chandelier ensures the entire closet is bright.

He also has a few valet rods for outfit planning (so helpful when packing!), and a gliding tie and belt rack (arranged in rainbow order, of course!).

Woven Basket | Tassel Charm

Off-season shoes are stored safely in clear shoe boxes, so I can still see the contents, but they’re kept clean. These boxes are so handy all over the house, I buy them by the case!

Pink Sweater | Tassel Necklace

Not only does the room provide so much more function and easy organization, but it’s a gorgeous space that adds so much to our daily routine, and the style of the Master Suite. Let’s take one more Before and After look!

Gray Sweater | Wedge Booties

I really can’t express the joy I feel every time I walk in the closet. I find myself lingering longer, and even using it as a make-shift office! I’ve worked with The Container Store before (the source for my Craft Closet and Little Miss’s Closet), so I know the power of their elfa Shelving and Drawer System, but I was still completely blown away by the transformation and the impact it makes on our daily lives! The entire process was a delight, from the planning and installation, to the organizing and decorating…their team was amazing!

If you’ve been considering a makeover for your closet, pantry, garage, you name it…the The Container Store’s Annual elfa Sale is going on now, with 30% off all elfa products and elfa installation! I’m a firm believer and hardcore fan of their Contained Home Organizer Service, now too! For $100, you get an in-home consultation and a personalized design and organization plan! There’s no question the elfa shelving and drawer system is fabulous, but it can work so much harder for you with the help of their organizing experts.

And the coolest part of their elfa closet systems, is they’re completely customizable to your specific space and budget (most elfa projects range from $50-$2,000). No project is too big or small, and you’ll be amazed by the added space and function their systems add. Installing it may feel like a splurge in the beginning, but one that will last you for years and years. Trust me, I’ve gone the cheaper route, and was replacing it within a year.

To see even more photos and a fun video of the space, head over to their blog,  The Container Stories, then hurry to The Container Store, because the big elfa Sale is only once a year, and it ends February 28!!! Happy organizing, lovebugs!

Everything that was previously on shelves, is now in that bank of drawers!! (Stacked today, of course!) I mean everything…jeans, shorts, tees, tanks, undies, socks, pajamas, athletic wear, jewelry, and swimsuits! We don’t have dressers in the bedroom, so everything is stored in the closet…and now I can reach it all! And the shallow drawers mean I’m not digging down and making a mess every time I need something.

Love it! What are the dimensions of your closet? I have the super tall ceilings like yours, but I would like to compare my space to yours to see what all I can fit in of the Elfa system. Did you have to get sheetrock repairs to remove your previous closet system before installing the new one?

Thanks Paula!! The closet is basically a long box (making it near impossible to photograph!)…it’s 14-feet wide and 7-feet deep, with 12-foot ceilings. Since The Container Store was creating this space for their site, they decided to really showcase the full potential of the closet, and took the shelves and rods all the way to the top! (Hence the ladder and garment hook!) 😉

    • Cassie wrote:

Thanks Donna!! The new system added so much more space and function, so things are really spread out now. Dresses are hanging on the top rack of the three-rack wall, and skirts are on the top rack above the boots and scarves. And just to the left of the pull-out shoes is a small section for longer hanging items, like maxi dresses, etc. The cool thing about elfa is you can customize to your space and needs, so I was able to assess what I have, and design it to fit those items. I have only a couple of really long items, so I didn’t need space for those! Hope this helps and answers your question! 🙂 xo

Making every inch count and fit your needs is an accomplishment. We’ve trimmed down and I no longer need a lot of clothes as I’m retired. As far as the nay-sayers go, you are reflecting your desires and what’s important to you. A full closet, filled with beautiful attire, efficiently displayed, makes you happy and your husband happy. What I love most is the color in your clothes as I love to paint. This would make a beautiful painting though I would punch back capturing the reality of the closet and focus more on the dreamy qualities. Every room, a story.

    Hi Cassie,
What a transformation! You must be thrilled! You really do have many, many, many beautiful things. I know shopping/blogging/fashion is your job, but it does come across as excessive. You do put yourself out there, and I respect that. However, what I find hard to relate with is your strategy of mixing outfits. You have enough clothes to dress a small village. I am sorry but the message you consistently blog about is not represented here. I am not a nay sayer, just a realist.

Hi Vanessa, thanks so much for your thoughtful comment. And yes, I agree I have a lot of clothes, but there are a few things worth pointing out (in my defense!) 😉

      1) With the addition of the elfa system, my space and storage basically doubled, allowing me to spread things out so much more. So what used to squish together in 2-feet, is now spread out into 7-feet. You’ll notice there’s over an inch between every hanger. #breathingroom So yes, while there are a lot of things, it looks like so much more when spread out.

      2) If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile, you probably recognize most every item in the closet…they all mix and match frequently to create new styles and looks. My goal here is to inspire you to create new looks, step outside your comfort zone, and have fun with fashion. A capsule wardrobe is a great thing, but just not for me! 😉

      3) With large closets, I’m able to hang on to items for years. Many of the pieces I’ve had for a decade! And many of the handbags I inherited from my super-stylish grandmother!

      4) Finally, we don’t have any dressers or storage in the bathroom or bedroom, so every last pair of underwear, jeans, shorts, tees, socks, bra, scarf, swimsuit, etc is stored in this closet. I think you’d be shocked if you spread out every article of clothing and accessory you own. 😉 xoxox

Thanks for responding. I really appreciate it. Actually, every piece of clothing my husband and I own is in our closet as well, and I LOVE to shop. Honestly, I have considerably less than you, even if I were to lay them all out. I guess I am more of a minimalist. No, I don’t wear the same clothes over and over, but I do tend to buy really quality pieces. Just because it is a bargain, does not mean it is worth in my book. Having a closest that requires me to have a step stool (I am 5’3”) plus a third tier just would not work in my book. I honestly would never even hit the upper tier.
Thanks again for your thoughtful answer. We clearly have two different philosophies.

  47. I’ve been following along for quite some time now, and yes, I don’t comment as much anymore. Not because I don’t care for you as a person, but because I learned a long time ago (from my dear Granny) “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. Our lifestyles are quite different, and I’m just not into all the fashion, and that’s ok. When people leave negative, sometimes hateful comments it just baffles me. If you don’t like what you read/see, it’s simple…unfollow. It saddens me because people don’t always see what’s behind the blog or blogger. Cassie you have always been a kind, caring, genuine person to me personally (we’ve followed each other from almost the beginning). While I chose to keep my blog a “hobby”, you chose to and have had the ability to turn yours into a paying job. It’s about personal choices. And I for one respect that.

  48. Just…WOW!
Would love to have a post about how your organize your clothes (season, color, etc.).
And how often do you do a purge? Some things must be leaving to make room for all the fun new items… How do you decide what goes?

Thanks Carole!! I do purge frequently, but mostly the worn-out and stained items…or things that were really trendy and therefore ‘dated.’ Most of my pieces are classics (in my book), and I hang on to them. Especially considering I blog about fashion, and am alway creating new outfits…I need things to create with! 😉

As for organizing, I group like items, for instance collared shirts, blouses, camis, jackets, skirt…then arrange them in rainbow color order within each category. Since I’m in Texas, most of my clothes work year-round, so I don’t have a lot of ‘off season’ clothing to separate out. I hope this helps!! xoxo

Oh my goodness! I have been waiting to see the finished product and it is just amazing!! I love the carpet, the chandeliers, the furry foot stool and especially the jewelry drawers and the shoe/purse storage. Well really all of it! They planned it out perfectly and used the space just right with function AND fabulousness! I think it probably looks like more to some people because everything is spread out and some items are displayed. Plus the fact that you don’t have dressers most likely means that EVERYTHING is in that closet! Not in a bin or basket or bag anywhere else. And besides the fact that you are a FASHION BLOGGER, so I kind of expect you to have a tiny bit more than me, who is not. ; )
I love you, your blog and your closet. Keep inspiring us with your gorgeous taste!! ❤❤

Oh Cassie …..I love, love your closet! I’ve been anticipating this post for awhile and have to say I want to make my closet beautiful too! But I do have some questions. Looking at the “before” pictures, did you purge before putting everything back in? Also, where do you store off season clothes? I’ve gone back and forth on how to store purses and shoes and right now I’ve got everything either in a clear shoe box or purse bags because of dust. I can’t stand for them to get dusty. Are you having to battle that problem with everything being out in the open? Thanks Cassie!❤

Thanks Veronica!! I actually purged before the Before shots (so I had a clear picture of what I have so we could design and organize around it)…so we put all the same stuff back in, there’s just so much more room to spread it out! But a good purge is definitely recommended before redoing your closet.

As for off-season, our climate isn’t too extreme, so 80% of my wardrobe works year-round. I used to keep off-season stuff on the high third rack, but the organizer actually integrated it all when she put it back (bc of that whole ‘more room’ thing). It’s taking me a little getting used to, but it also opens up more options and keeps me from having to change my closet out twice a year! 😉

Oh, and as for dusting…our old closet was open, too, so everything was on (disheveled) display…and things are in such constant rotation (probably bc of blogging), that they didn’t really get dusty. We’ll see if this set-up is different! xoxo

This is a beautiful closet- it is more like a chic NYC boutique than what most think of as a closet…I think that’s where some of the comments about excessiveness come into play. For me, the 3 tired wall of color was a little overwhelming in the pictures, but that doesn’t take away from how amazing and organized it is. Cassie- I have a question for you. Obviously people who are super negative have no business posing mean comments, but do you like to hear from people who have differing opinions? Those who wouldn’t choose it themselves, but can still appreicate your style and that it’s your choice for your closet? Does that make sense? Obviously, you can say “no” since it’s your house you’re welcoming us into…you might want to hear only from those who love it.

Thanks so much, Allison! I absolutely welcome all opinions, if they’re expressed thoughtfully and without malicious intent. I am well aware that my style is not for everyone, and I’m okay with that. It’s one thing to appreciate a design, and another entirely to want to live with or wear it for yourself! 🙂

I’d very much like this to be a community of circular conversations, where we express ourselves and opinions, while still respecting each other. My thought is, if you wouldn’t say it to your sister or mother, then don’t say it on the internet. There’s a human being that works really hard to create joy and inspiration on the other end, reading every last word, and the mean ones hurt. xoxo

    Cassie,
My question is not about your closet. It is no doubt your closet is incredible. I mean you have a Karasten rug and two chandeliers. It actually looks like a boutique here in NYC. I prefer a more minimalist approach. I love to shop, but I am not impulsive and really LIKE TO acquire quality…think Goyard instead of several Barrington bags. Nothing wrong with Barrington, but I would rather save my pennies. But, I digress. My question is in regards to your Dressing Room Diaries. I just have to ask…is Mr. SP in the dressing room with you? I am not a prude, but I find it so strange. When my husband shops with (often), but he hunts for an area outside the dressing room. Sorry, I find it weird and very inappropriate. I know you have a very loving relationship. I mean…how he looks at you is pretty amazing, but a Nordstrom, GAP, Old Navy, etc. is no place for a man. I am sorry, but I would love to hear your thoughts. When I see him in a dressing room corner, it’s kind of creepy.

Thanks for your comment, Kelly! It doesn’t bother me at all to be in the Dressing Room together…it’s no different than getting dressed at home for me. We’ve been together 22 years, so he’s seen it all anyway! 😉

Most the dressing rooms are unisex, but if we’re ever at a store with gender specific dressing rooms, he’s respectful to the other shoppers and doesn’t go back with me. Plus, I like to get his opinion on things, and don’t really want to traipse out in the store to show him! xo

Not sure I believe it about the unisex dressing rooms. I have been married for almost 25 years to a very loving husband (just like yours); however, I find it completely inappropriate to have him in there. Nordstrom and the others have clear men’s and women’s changing rooms. Heck sometimes they are on different floors. Unisex? No thank you. What about when you leave? Do you make a mad dash? Save it for home. Of course he had said seen it all, but have a little humility and respect for the other customers. I can hardly believe your beloved Nordstrom would approve.

Hi Erica…I said he comes with me when there’s unisex dressing areas (like old navy, gap, jcrew)…and only comes in the Nordstrom dressing room with me if there are no other shoppers in them. If there are people around, he sits in the common area with the 3-way mirror, and I come out to show him. We would in no way make other women uncomfortable, and it’s a bit hurtful that you assume we’d behave in such a way. And of course we don’t scurry out, we aren’t doing anything inappropriate in the dressing room to be embarrassed of! But I completely understand if the Dressing Room Diaries posts aren’t for you, and you decide to skip over them in the future. xo

I have to agree about the dressing room. I have always found it strange. I do love your DRD, but when I see Mr. SP in there, it makes me feel awkward. Unisex or not, it is disrespectful. I know the faces he makes are in jest, but it is off putting, I know you said he only goes in when there are no others in there, but that can change in an instant. I am not a prude, but this inappropriate for my southern self. I will say you are VERY openly affectionate, and I understand that this works for you. In my opinion it’s just tacky. Keep your wardrobe changes for him at home.

Beautiful closet! Could you share your thoughts on how practical the acrylic bracelet organizers are? I’m curious if it’s hard to get ones in the middle off the holder without knocking off bracelets on the end. Thanks!

Thanks Sara! I place cuff bracelets in the middle (because you can open them to pull off), and other bracelets on the end. So they’re great if you have an assortment of bracelets like that. But if you mostly have bracelets that slip over your hand, then this organizer probably not the most efficient. xo

I have been reading this blog for years, and will continue to as it’s my favourite of the handful I follow! I am on a very small budget and don’t often buy new clothes…but that is one of the reasons I love the blog…I can get inspiration with how to style similar pieces I have to make my outfits have more mileage. I never feel sad or envious that I don’t have the same things…while fashion is enjoyable it’s the love from those I surround myself with that brings the most happiness. Please people be quick to see the positives…not trying to find negatives in everything. Cassie don’t ever stop blogging, or including your hubby, mum, kids, etc in your posts. I just finished a major clean out in my closet and was wondering if they have any kind of island console to go in the middle of my closet?
