Master Closet Makeover | Befores + Design

Welcome back to another week of fun! If you’re stopping by looking for a dose of pretty…well, sorry to disappoint you, but you’re not going to find that here today! But if drastic makeovers are your jam, then you’ve hit the jackpot!

If you follow my InstaStories on Instagram (little video snippets of our unfiltered real life), then you already know what’s been going on around here….The Container Store has taken possession our Master Closet, and is turning it from drab to fab!! Not to mention, creating tons more storage and function. They’ve long been my favorite source for all things organized (like my Craft Closet and Little Miss’s Closet), and I’m thrilled to partner with them for another amazing project.

But before you can truly appreciate the magic they, and my Contained Home Organizer, create, you have to see where we started…the tragic befores. Okay, maybe that’s a tad dramatic, but I’m prone to it. When we first moved in this house, I was thrilled to have more than double the space of our previous closet, plus built-ins. Talk about hitting the jackpot!

But it didn’t take long to realize the built-ins weren’t conducive to our things…or my height. We don’t have dressers in our bedroom, so I used bins and the shelves to house all of our clothes in the closet. Which led to me refolding and straightening weekly, and then not at all. #hotmess I had some semblance of order in my hanging clothes (although the rods weren’t sturdy enough to hold them), but shoes, jeans, tees, activewear and accessories were near impossible to keep orderly, and reach (the ceilings are 12-feet!).

Mr. Sugarplum’s corner side was a little better, but items were constantly falling out of the short shelves. And the rest was cluttered with my attempt to organize handbags and clutches.

It wasn’t the worst set-up ever, and we were certainly making it work…but were we fully utilizing the space? No ma’am. Was it a bit of an eyesore considering how visible the room is to both our bedroom and bathroom? Oh yeah. Could it improve? Absolutely!

So when The Container Store asked to use my space for their Container Stories blog, I jumped at the chance! And considering how much time I spend in the room, I decided to do a full-blown makeover. After all, it’s the first place I go in the morning, and usually the last before bed.

Chandelier | Roman Shade | Cheetah Carpet | Pouf | Elfa Decor Closet System

I only had two weeks to prepare, and another week to actually make it happen…so the timing has been tight, and a little frenetic! But the photo and video shoots are scheduled for later this week, so fingers crossed everything falls in to place. But regardless of the pretty parts, the space is guaranteed to be fabulous and fully-functional thanks to The Container Store magic!

Do you have a fully-functioning closet space? Does it bring you joy, or cause anxiety when you walk in? The annual 30% off Elfa sale (including installation) is going on now, so it’s a great time if you’ve been considering a makeover! Stay tuned for more progress and updates!

I do have a nicely organized walk in closet, with room for all my clothes, shoes & purses. But, when I see all these gorgeous closets that are room size with a chandelier, centre island, pretty rug and chair, I want that! Why? I ask myself. Am I going to sit in a closet? Nope! I need to buck up and appreciate what I do have.
I know whatever you do, Cassie, will be well organized while being FABULOUS!

Or…knock down a wall and turn the office, well only half of it, into my closet. Not so sure my hubby would want to sacrifice his space for me to buy more clothes. Lol Well, it was a fun thought until I put it into words.

Your closet has a similar layout to mine. I have high ceilings with that really high rod like you do (the previous owners even left the “reach pole” like stores have) and I also keep a small step ladder in there! I can’t wait to see what they come up with. I’ll be watching!!

Oh yes…I’m definitely going to need a shepards hook! And ladder! Our ceilings are TWELVE FEET!!!

I’ve been deep into my closet trying to make better sense of mine also. I moved from a good sized and well organized walk in to a much smaller closet with one long rod that is difficult to access along the far end. So far, I’ve made a second rod to create double hung space from an old pole and some chains. After all the pillows move out to our soon-to -be delivered daybed, I’ll make better use of the back corner.
I look forward to seeing the progress in your closet…

Looking so great … thanks for taking us along on the ride to closet heaven! Quick question … where did you get that boot holder that was in the pic in your before closet?

Thanks Heidi! It’s this boot rack, but I didn’t find it all that sturdy. It works okay if you have a wall to help prop it up. Or maybe I just have really heavy boots!

I have no closet space in my current home. Well, I have a janitors closet in my bedroom and a slightly bigger janitors closet in my daughter’s room. I can’t wait for the day our house sells and we can house hunt for something bigger and more family friendly! Can’t wait to see your design and the afters! Your blog is one of my go to blogs at the end of a long week to just sit back, relax, and admire the amazing designs and inspiration! 🙂

Haha… I look forward to updating my closet this year. And a container store opened about 25 minutes from me. Yay!!! Excited to see how your closet turns out.

  14. Um, seriously. I have been following your IG Stories on this space and when I saw the cheetah carpet I squealed with delight. I mean, how perfect!!!! Ahhh! I told myself, I need to tell my husband I need The Container Store to come out and redo our closet PRONTO! Haha! Also, your daughter is the cutest in your IG Stories. She reminds me a lot of my girl who is a little younger (8). Keep posting on the progress on IG Stores, loving each one!

My closet is waaaay past due for an upgrade. I have always wanted to replace the carpet with the same wood flooring I have everywhere else. You just inspired me to look for a leopard area rug once the floors are installed. #iwanttohavewhatcassiehas.

I am so stinking excited to see this come together!!! We have got to do something with ours. The size is great, but it is so ridiculous how it’s put together, it just doesn’t function for us at all. Like, my bras and panties are in a basket on the floor.. I got no place for mah draws 😀 Yours is going to be amazing!!!

Can’t wait to see the final reveal. We have used The Container Store to do the kid’s closets and the guest bedroom. Our’s needs to be done but it’s actually fairly big but odd shaped so I’m not sure exactly what we should do. Des your pup get his designated space in the new closet too? He looks so cozy in there.

We used The Container Store for my walk-in closet–oh my, it is just the room I want to hang in sometimes! They did an amazingly specific and thorough job in the planning, and my hubby relished the puzzle of putting it all up (really). I bought a cheetah bench and painted the mirror wall fuchsia. Money so well spent. Your reveal is much anticipated!

Okay, I cannot get over how beautiful your closet turned out! We are in the process of building our new master suite, and I have a question for you! Where did you find those closet doors? I am in love with the little double doors. They would be perfect for our space! Thanks!

Thanks Brittney! The doors came with the house, so the builder picked them out I guess. I do have extremely high ceilings, so my doors are 9-feet…making them look very substantial!! Good luck with your makeover!
