Hi Sugarplum!

Master Bedroom Refresh

January 26, 2017

Okay, your excitement over our Closet Progress yesterday was practically palpable! Clearly, closets are our shared love-language. And the cool part about the elfa shelving and drawers, is it’s completely customizable! You can work around existing systems, or build it from a blank slate, making it fit your individual needs and budget. It’s not necessary to fully demo like we did. Stay tuned for more progress, and the full reveal!

When I shared the process of emptying out the closet yesterday, I realized it’s been awhile since you’ve seen our Master Bedroom. Almost two years, to be exact, when we revealed it for our first One Room Challenge! I receive a lot of questions about this room…do we still like the dark walls? Have we changed up the design? How’d we hang curtains on the bay window? Where’d you get your bed/mirrors/pillows, etc?

I’m constantly rearranging chairs, pillows and art all over the house, and a recent shuffling led to a fun refresh for our bedroom, and I don’t see it changing anytime soon, so I thought I’d share how our room looks these days. I’m tickled pink with our new sitting area!

Pink Chair (on sale!) | Floral Pillow | Gold Faceted Side Table | Leopard Drapes | Angled Hardware

We’d originally picked up these pink chairs for the Family Room (more on that space this year!), but the scale wasn’t quite right. Then we moved them to the Dining Room for the holidays, which I loved, but it definitely felt temporary. Next, I tried them in the Living Room, and while I adored that, I didn’t have anywhere to move the chairs that already lived there! But wouldn’t you know, the final spot ended up being the winner!?

I can’t believe I didn’t think of the Master Bedroom sooner…it’s like they’re made for this space! The pink coordinates beautifully with the other textiles, and really pops against the snow leopard drapes, giving the little sitting area more presence in the room.

Sugarplum Tip: These elbow brackets pivot and make hanging drapes on bay windows a breeze!

Other than flipping my bed shams (remember my One Bed | Four Ways post?), we didn’t change anything else about the space, yet it feels almost like a new room!

Bed | Duvet & Shams | Trellis Shams | Malachite Pillows | Floral Lumbar Pillow

Miss Maggie was displaced from her usual spot during the closet renovations, but I think she prefers being closer to us now! I’m not sure how long that will last, because DANG, dogs are noisy sleepers!! So much sighing and snoring. And don’t get me started on the licking! #doyoumind?

Mirror | Nightstand | Similar Lamps | Dog Bed

The chairs are not only chic, but really comfy…so I find myself working and reading in this sunny spot more often. The shag foot stool is one of those pieces that looks great everywhere, so it’s always migrating! I should just get another while it’s on sale!

Foot Stool | Sweater | Jeans | Pink & Green Hoop Earrings

Pink Chair (on sale!) | Floral Pillow | Gold Faceted Side Table | Monogrammed Catch-All

Isn’t that alarm clock such an eyesore?! I’ve had that thing since college and it just won’t die! I thought about taking it out for these pics, but wanted to give you a realistic view of our nightstands. Minus the 14 glasses of water that always seem to be there. And the stack of un-read catalogs.

Mirror | Nightstand | Similar Lamps | Dog Bed

Velvet Chair | Pom Pom Pillow | Underwater Art Print | Planter Basket

Pink Chair (on sale!) | Floral Pillow | Gold Faceted Side Table | Leopard Drapes | Angled Hardware

Sweater | Jeans | Pink & Green Hoop Earrings

Framed IG Pic | Glass Box | Lamp Charm

Duvet & Shams | Trellis Shams | Malachite Pillows | Floral Lumbar Pillow

As for the dark walls…I love them every bit as much today, as I did the day we painted them (Sherwin Williams ‘Iron Ore’)! The color and drama never gets old, and literally everything looks amazing against them. Have you refreshed any of your spaces lately? And more importantly, where do your pets sleep?!

LOVE that gold side table with the glass top. Wonder if it’s short enough to serve as a coffee table in our living room? Maybe two tables paired together? World Market, here I come!

My dog sleeps just about wherever he wants. (He’s not allowed on the bed or couch.) Until we moved into this apartment, his bed and crate was always by my bed and on my side of the bed. He’s always used his crate. But now it’s on my husband’s side of the bed and he doesn’t use it anymore. He just sleeps on the floor by my side or anywhere else. We may just get rid of the crate altogether when we move into our next place, so we can be more flexible with the dog bed. Where you put Maggie is a really good idea that I may try.

    Your room is beautiful.

Our dog sleeps in our room just like your Maggie. I think that if you moved her now she might be confused. Yes, the noises sometimes bother me, the 3am pee breaks truly break up our nights sleep. At the end of the day, it’s okay.

    Thanks so much.

Your room is gorgeous!! Those leopard drapes are amazing and I think I need them… My dogs sleep right next to my side of the bed so I am surrounded by snoring boys all night! (Insert monkey covering ears emoji) Maggie looks like she loves it already 🙂

Your room is stunning! Those windows and all the natural light—SWOON! We have dark walls in our bedroom and I have loved them buuuttt, I’m totally wanting to redo the space. We just decorated a clients bedroom and it was all light and neutrals..gave me an itch. Thanks for sharing!

I envy your ability to coordinate colors! The room has so many different colors going on, nothing is matchy matchy, and it looks awesome! I also love the dark wall color. Dark walls are my jam!

We have an English Bulldog that would love to sleep about six inches from us at all times but I have to say that the amount of snoring, throat clearing and noise making he does through the night was just about killing us. It was like back to newborn baby type nights so we had to make him his own space! Maggie looks so happy though!

The room is beautiful. Love those dark walls.
Now. The dog. We used to have a licker and it drove me CRAZEEEEEEEEE. Try putting the dog on grain free organic food. It’s more expensive but they eat less of it because it is usually so power packed. And if you can’t go organic, at least grain free. Once we did that, the dog quit licking. Honest. We are on to another dog and he always has grain free dry food and never licks.

Hi Cassie! I love your style…combining colors and patterns, but making it look intentional and personal. Just like the killer outfits you put together! Our noisy pug, Sammy sleeps beside our bed on his own cute dog bed…our bed is high, so during the day his dog bed gets slid under our bed…the beauty of hardwood floors!

THANK YOU for taking a picture with your alarm clock – I hate my alarm clock, but I can’t NOT have one in the bedroom. Pinterest never shows the reality of life when looking for nightstand styling ideas!

Our dogs don’t sleep in the bedroom. The licking and moving about disrupts my sleep, plus there’s not a ton of room for them. They have lux cozy beds near the dog door…clear on the other side of the house. 😉

Love the pink chairs in your bedroom! Our labradoodle sleeps on the bed. Thankfully she knows to stay on my husband’s side, practically hanging off the edge. Why she would choose that spot over the fluffy dog bed that’s on the floor, I’ll never know!

I always thought what’s the point of having a sweet dog in your life if they are not near you, even at night. He sleeps on our bed while we watch TV in the evening and moves to his bed next to us later on (our house is a teeny, tiny 930 sf so not many other places for him to go!). His sighing and snoring is crazy making, but I wouldn’t want him anywhere else. I wouldn’t tell the kids to keep off the furniture, so he’s welcome, too!

Your master bedroom looks great! I love how you mixed patterned and bold pillows against your bright white duvet.
Your monogrammed catch all also caught my eye and as I was looking at it, I noticed your glasses frames. I am in need of new frames and was wondering if you could share what yours are? They look like just the right balance of neutral but cute 🙂
    Thanks!

Your Master looks great! I love the sitting area. I often look for a spot to “get away” and this seems like a perfect spot, I think I need one in my Master. Our Westie sleeps on the bed with us, mostly around/on me 🙂

I admire so much how you’re not afraid of colour or pattern. Your spaces are so bright and fresh and full of life! I’m always drawn to neutrals but I realize when I see your spaces how important at least a little pop of colour is. It brings joy to the space. Thank you for sharing and inspiring me! 🙂

I love how this turned out, love seeing Maggie on one of my dog beds, but most importantly I can’t get over that fabulous floral pillow on the bed. What size do you have? I clicked through to the listing but they offer so many lumbar options.
Also, I had to chuckle at the comment about Maggie. My pups sleep on their beds on either side of our bed, and my husband and I have been complaining lately about how LOUD the licking is! And why must it happen in the middle of the night? The other night we debated kicking them out of the bedroom just to get one good night’s sleep. I thought it was just us…

I realize I’m a bit late to this thread, but we recently bought a new bed based on the link you have here to the Halifax from J&M, but it says it’s just a headboard and not the full upholstered frame. Is the linked bed the actual one you have? We’d love one that has matching upholstered sides similar to yours, instead of just a headboard attached to a metal frame.
