So after Friday’s post of Spring outfits, did you get to bust any of them out over the weekend? Yeah, neither did we. It went from gloriously warm and sunny, to cold and rainy overnight. Awesome. Spring is sure taking her sweet time. I guess it’s just as well because the icky weather lends me more time working on projects inside in the house. Once the weather is nice, I have a hard time not turning all my attention to the backyard.
And I declared in my Home Goals that this was the year the Mister and I finally got our own space. Virtually every room in the house has received some love, except ours. And since our marriage is key to this family and home working, you could say it’s the most important room in the house! (You like how I rationalize a makeover?)
A few weeks ago I showed you the huge difference new bedding made….
But I was very selective in how much you saw…in fact, this is as wide as the angle got.
Bloggers are sneaky that way. I wasn’t trying to trick you into thinking our room is a space that it’s not, I just didn’t want to take away from the awesome new Crane & Canopy duvet and shams. The updated bedding was the fuel my tiny fire needed, and now I’m ready to tackle this room. And we can’t have Afters without Befores…so lets take a tour of our mis-matched bedroom, shall we?
Some of you are thinking I sound like a big brat by ragging on a perfectly fine room. Of course there’s nothing wrong with the space, it just doesn’t reflect us, or our style. And as a result, we never spend any time in it…unless we’re, you know, sleeping. And since the room has never received much attention, it’s become the furniture dumping ground over the years. All the random pieces that have no place in the rest of the house, have come to die a slow, boring death here….creating a mashed-up, overcrowded space.
We’ve added a few things over the years, but nothing with intention, which only adds to the randomness.
This dressing table was in my childhood room, and received the red and zebra treatment years before I started blogging. I kept it, and never updated it, because I thought I’d move it to Babygirl’s room someday. It wouldn’t fit in her small room, so someday never came.
These clip frames hold pictures of travels and moments that are most special to us, but I stopped updating them about five years ago. So much for special. Now they just feel like noise on the wall.
I love all the windows, but they are pretty wimpy at just 31-35 inches wide. Drapes would obviously help that situation, but I hated to add any when I wasn’t sure of the room’s direction.
The armoire used to be the TV cabinet in the Family Room, now it blocks the windows in our room. And just like the floral rug in the Living Room, the giant (5-foot tall!) ship has no place in our home. But since it was one of my grandfather’s favorite possessions, I haven’t been able to let it go. This is the only room tall enough to accommodate it…so it’s perched awkwardly on top. Someone please write me a permission slip to sell it.
I created this floorplan to give you a better idea of the layout of the room. The chest and dressing table have no use, and the dresser and two side tables aren’t very functional.
And here’s a 3D of the space with no furniture. The windows pretty much determine the location of the bed, so there’s not a lot of flexibility with placement.
It’s a great space and I can’t wait to uncover it’s true potential. I’ve got a lot of ideas, but per my usual MO, I can’t seem to decide on a direction. I’m working on some moodboards and new floorplans and hope to show you soon, and get your input. Until then, let’s just reflect on the one happy spot in the room.

Oh, and please don't sell that boat, it's awesome! I have noticed similar large scale boats in many recent designer spaces.

Giving you permission to sell the boat if it doesn't fit your home. I guarantee there is someone out there that would LOVE to have that bad boy on display, and I bet your Grandpa would be just as happy with that. 🙂

Regarding the boat … the best advice I've ever heard regarding keepsakes like that is to take a photo of it, and then frame and hang the photo in your home. Then you still have the cherished memory of your grandfather and his boat, without it taking up space in your house (and the bonus is that it frees up the boat to make its way to a home with someone who will LOVE it.)
Exactly what I was going to suggest. You could frame a photo of the ship together with a photo of your grandfather or one of you with your grandfather. He knows you love and miss him and would want you to to do what makes you happy.
Your room has so much potential. Our bedroom is also the land of lost random crap that needs a home. I always work on that, buy something awesome for the space and then bring is back downstairs. I finally got my husband on board with spending money in our master so we're slowly working on changing that. I want a retreat for goodness sake! For all that amazing uninterrupted sleep I get 🙂
I'm going to say DON'T SELL THE BOAT. Can it live in a corner somewhere so it doesn't need the high ceilings? I know it seems crazy far off, but can you just store it for a while so your son can have it? The rug was an obvious, sell it choice. But that boat just seems to good not to save for later.

Our office space in our rental home is definitely our dumping ground for everything that either has no use or hasn't yet been unpacked (we've been here almost two months … shh). I think your master has awesome potential – I can't wait to see what you do with it!

since you are a great photographer, why not take a photo of the boat (before you sell it), blow it up (maybe in black/white), and put it on the wall. i could see it as very cool artwork.

For sure! It's my Master, too. But, I've got a plan, most of the supplies, and will hopefully get it knocked out by the end of the summer!

Hi Cassie, I've seen a similar space in Candy's Olson show and she moved the bed to be where your chair and dressing table is, then a bench where your bed is now, and the TV where the chest is (maybe painted in teal), then you can have the rocking chair where the dresser is… I think I made a mess but I'm sure you'll get me 🙂 just my 2 cents. Can't wait to see your finished product! We have no furniture other than the bed and 2 side tables and I love it! No clutter! All of our clothes are in the closet. I think you should keep the boat because your son may want it one day. Can you store it in an attic or basement?! Put it on a wall shelf in the laundry room or other empty space?
Shamefully I come out of lurking to confess: My whole 1988 PTown house falls into the category of "I can't decide which direction so I don't take any at all."
Perhaps I will resolve to do one thing this week about that. I will either go to LTC MiCo and consider my slump with a mambo taxi, sunset fajitas and guacamole or to Chitos [maybe 2 of their amazing tacos] and get the process rolling. One small step at a time.

how did you create the floor plan and 3D rendering? Is that an app or a program? I need to do this and go room by room. I have interior design sense but for my own house I do not. That is why my walls are bare.

Our guest bedroom has become the dumping ground in our house. Redoing our living room this week displaced a few pieces of furniture and I'm trying to figure out how to reincorporate them.
Also I wouldn't sell the boat! I have almost nothing that belonged to my Papa and I would do just about anything to have something that was special to him. Maybe you could make/buy a shadowbox large enough to house it? Then you could hang it on the wall somewhere in your house instead of having set up on a surface. Or just keep it in storage somewhere so you can pass it on to your kids someday?
Love your style…and would just make a suggestion to forgo navy because of all the dust & lint most bedding creates. You will be forever cleaning it. I've had navy velvet & learned the hard way. Can't wait to see what you do! Merry Christmas!

thank you! Our bedroom and adjoining bath are SW Quietude and Halcyon Green. Neither of which is green, but the perfect gray blue. I've had this color for 10 years and haven't gotten tired of it once. And that's saying a lot, considering how often I repaint! 😉 xo
