Hi Sugarplum!

Light Fixtures: Practical or Pretty?

February 23, 2011

I gave you guys a peek of the fan in Babygirl’s Room yesterday. I have despised that fixture with a red-hot-passion since we moved in 5 years ago, but any of you that live in the South know that while a ceiling fan may not be pretty, it’s fairly necessary!

The tan blades against the white ceiling were especially painful, but now that the ceiling is painted a similar color, I’m not minding it as much.

Picnik collage

Sure I’d love to add a more modern decor light, like these found by uber-online-resource CSN:

A new light fixture isn’t really in the budget, and removing the fan isn’t really practical for my little head-sweater…but I’ve got an idea to mask the homely of the big bulb. Fingers crossed.

What’s the rule in your house when it comes to fans and lighting….practical or pretty?

We have fans in all of our upstairs bedrooms because our house is 100+ years old and has super high ceilings, so it's hard to keep it super cool in our hot & humid summers. I'm definitely a fan of practicality over pretty in this case. (Probably the only time I will let practicality win haha)

Fans are practical, with an 1880 home there is no central air or a lot of windows for a cross breeze. I try to get the least ugly ones…ha!

    Can't wait to see.

Well, when it does actually get hot here it is usually for a brief period of time, so fans are not necessary. I don't know what I would do in a climate where they were! Janell

As a fellow southerner, the layout of our home allows us to have a nice chandelier in our bedroom, but the kids room (at the other end of the house) are a different story. They get warm, and a sweaty kid means they wake up and end up your your bed (which is no bueno) I say keep the fan in this case!

Practical wins at our house but only bc its too hot in houston not to have a fan in everyroom. I put a pretty fiixture in the office and now hubby keeps hinting that we need a fan in there… boys 🙂

Probably not the right answer but pretty always wins out for me- you could always have a stand up fan for those really hot nights:) I love love the brass fixture (3rd from the bottom.) And ps, dying to know what you picked for the curtain pelmet!

Love the color in your baby girl's room! We have to have a ceiling fan in our room (vaulted ceilings) but I'd love to have a gorgeous chandelier. I'll probably settle for a better looking fan!

Practical. I have to keep mine or I would be a miserable person the every morning in the summer!

I can't wait to see your idea. Did u see my post today? They simply painted the fan and I think I like it!

It's a must in the summer for sure. I really love the first pendant you chose. It's so cute!

Oooooh yes. We have to have our ceiling fans too. Our bedrooms would look sooo much better with a cool light. Alas my husband has put his foot down.

I think it'll totally blend away into the ceiling. I'd like to say pretty, but I've never lived in the hot Texan heat!

We have one ceiling fan at the top o the loft which is a bit of a necessity with a 20ft ceiling to keep air moving. Fortunately, we get one hot week a year, so fans are not that big of a necessity.

So get the need for ceiling fans!! We have them in all of our bedrooms. You could paint the blades, and even change out the light kit fairly inexpensively!!

We do have one ceiling fan in our home (Master Bedroom) It was super hideous when we moved in so we opted for a smaller white one that blends in with the ceiling more. So I think since yours blends in more with the ceiling you should go for comfort for your daughter's sake. If she is roasting in the middle of the night she isn't going to care how pretty her light is. But you could do a similar stylish lampshade on a table lamp by her bed if there is room.

I am with you! Living in the South and ceiling fans go hand in hand. I love chandeliers, pendents and sconces but I save those for dining, foyer and bathrooms ( even closets;)

You certainly have some cute options, but I agree that ceiling fans are jsut a "must" in some parts of the country. (I wouldn't give up the one in our master bedroom for anything!). I know you are hoping the blades will blend in with the ceiling, but what about making them pop instead by painting them the same blue as the walls or maybe even the pink of the bed?

If you need a fan, definitely leave it. Maybe you could do something fun with the blades? Or maybe you could have colored ribbon instead of the chain? I don't know! You'll make it work (:

I agree, fans aren't so pretty in general – but in the south they are a necessity!! 🙂 Can't wait to see what you've got in store for it!

We have fans in all the bedrooms and recently replaced the one in the living room for a beautiful big fixture. Even though it get hot in the summer, we have central air so I never turn on the fans (and I hate the feeling of them blowing down on me or whirling over me in bed) so I'm slowing replacing them all with pretty fixtures one by one. 🙂

I try to incorporate both practical but with style. Living down here in Florida we NEED fans… even though we have the A/C on all Summer, the fans help to circulate the air… The fans we currently have in the house [which were here when we moved in] are just plain white and boring. I hope to switch them out with something more fun and a little modern, but still in the 'fan' family 🙂

My hubby insists on ceiling fans in every room (as we live in LA), but I wish that I could have pretty lighting fixtures
My fav is the first one, but thinking that a young lady would probably love the white squiggly one
